    Very nice sir. I hear people complain about lights being useless and how they always just take the biggest heaviest mechs they can. I almost always have a single light in my lance with ace pilot for double-tapping assaults in the back. You took a couple of risks that could have gone poorly. Heavy/Assault melee is the BANE of light mechs. One hit and it can slap the evasion right off your light. But they paid off this time.

      No guts no Galaxy, I believe is the saying? :D. I have an entire campaign of me doing crazy stuff like this called "There are four lights". I know your a really busy man, but if you are interested, there is a particularly gripping episode coming up soon called "All out war", a very dicey 4 and 1/2 skull adventure in light mechs. Would you like me to poke you when it releases? :).

      If your light mechs can outrun the heavies (heavy or assault mechs) and also have mechwarriors with piloting expertise, you can defeat the heavies. Here’s how: you can delay your own mech actions until after the heavies have moved, then move in and rear attack the heavies, then next turn rear attack the heavies AGAIN and then run or jump clear of any surviving heavies before they have their next turn. Then repeat this when ready. This way you will never be at risk of suffering a melee attack from a heavy.
      PS, to achieve this, it is important that you have mech builds that enable 2 alpha strikes plus movement (remember, jumping creates more heat than walking) in a row without overheating.
      PPS, I reckon light mechs with very fast movement & plenty of jump jets are the safest mechs to try this with. I suspect it would be very risky with light mechs that have slower movement or not many jumpjets (e.g. urbanmechs).

    Hang on just have to pick up my jaw from the floor. This was amazing! My current playstyle tends to prefer lightweight/mobile jumpy mediums (still in the mid game) and 1 LRM boat so I definitely resonated with this tactic. Although it seems to me it might be easier to pull this off vs heavy/assault than light mechs since they're typically slower and thus won't have as much evasion pips.

    Step 1: Analyze battlefield map and enemy composition, select your forces accordingly, draw up movement plans, attack orders, etc.

    0:10 I know this stratagem as a "pincer maneuver"!

    • @TheEdmon
      @TheEdmon  5 лет назад +4

      Terminology around military maneuvers can be messy, if you look up "pincer maneuver" on wikipedia for example, it says "also known as a double envelopment".
      I choose the main wording as "Interdiction" because we are stopping a moving enemy force, that's coming to us for battle, by running past them, causing a surround and halting them where they are. Plus this is very much an "ambush" style strategy, but with the enemy being aware of the approaching danger (so it's not an actual ambush).
      I hope this clarifies why I used the wording I did. This is one of these things where there are a lot of terms that could be correct and I am simply working towards what I think is most correct.

      @@TheEdmon I don't know how it was called, but Mongols did something like this when facing European heavies. Their cavalry was light and would be run over in frontal clash. But then, they would quickly get up and turn around and hit heavy cavalry from the back.

  • @Ghostdog1986-izl
    @Ghostdog1986-izl 3 месяца назад

    I'm not sure "interdiction" is what you describe it as here. Whilst it it can be used to aid in an envelopment, interdiction in its truest sense is to delay, destroy or impede forces or supplies reaching the engagement area, there by degrading combat effectiveness of individual units and limiting the ability for an opponent to mass there forces sufficiently. example, air interdiction missions will target supplies or reinforcements reaching a combat zone and has nothing to do with positioning forces to envelope the opponent - BUT a very good video non the less thank you kind sir :)

    • @TheEdmon

      In BT here, units come in waves/groups and you want to wipe them out before they link up and become a huge blob. That's what I mean.

    Great video. Thanks. How do you react if there's a reinforcement lance? You can't quite flank the enemy because you might get out flanked by the reinforcement.

    • @TheEdmon
      @TheEdmon  5 лет назад +1

      Murder the first lance down fast, then disengage and re-engage once cooled off. It is exceptionally rare that two lances are literally on top of each other at the same time. So use that light speed and end the first lance quickly.

    First off, you act like this is something anyone can do at any time. You obviously trained a lance of pilots for an entire campaign with exactly the right set of skills to pull this off. At no point in the video did you even hint at that. Secondly, I'd be interested in knowing how consistently you pull this off during a campaign. I have a feeling this sort "win" requires a lot of save scumming, or just dumb luck. Pull this off ten times in a row and I might reconsider. Thirdly, by your own admission, this tactic doesn't work if you are outnumbered, which the majority of the time, you are.
    I see a very situational tactic which does nothing to counter the assertion that assault-creep is heavily present in this game. There is still no good reason not to take your biggest lance into every battle. Lights are still mostly useless.

    • @TheEdmon
      @TheEdmon  5 лет назад +5

      This is something anyone can do at any time. I have my "There are four lights" campaign, where I play only lights through an entire career. From early game to end game, from 1/2 skull missions to 5 skull missions.
      I think watching the "There are four lights" campaign will clarify for you just how viable this is, in all situations and against not just 4 enemies but also 8 and even 12.
      Likewise, this will clarify the pilots skillsets in the lategame as well as how you can pull these kind of moves off, even with more basic pilots.

      _"...where I play only lights through an entire career."_
      Thanks for proving my first point. This is something that takes an entire campaign to set up. It is not something anyone can do at the drop of a hat. Also, a playlist proves nothing. Those could just be the successful missions you posted. I do not believe for a second that you ran a sixty mission playthrough on vanilla and never once got squad-wiped, or even suffered significant losses, while using lights the entire time. Even if it was true, it just serves to highlight how incompetently-designed the AI is, and how poor a game Battletech is to begin with.

    • @TheEdmon
      @TheEdmon  5 лет назад +6

      It is something anyone can do if they are willing to learn the skills to do it. If anything, lights can be more dangerous than the heavier weight classes and can clean maps of heavies and assaults faster than other weight classes.
      I just played a standard game and sold any mechs with higher than light weight class, I didn't do any modding, not even changing the starting mechs.
      You don't believe I did it because you've not watched any of it. I wish there was something I could say that would change your mind. I have PvP casts on here as well, where lights are also used heavily against "real players" with a high level of success.

      @KdogPrime i totally agree with u, this is not a guide and this tactic does not work it all + enemies(AI) dont miss u that much + these lights can get down in one shot, in this video they all miss and u have greats shots. This video is useless

    • @TheEdmon
      @TheEdmon  5 лет назад +6

      @@silverfox7777 There is over 60 videos and 100 matches of evidence that it works perfectly. But this is the most advanced tactic in my guide set. It's not for everyone, it's for those that have mastered the other skills first and thus get how this too would work.
      I am happy to do my best to teach the skills if you like, but denying it works is counter productive. It DOES work and I could ask people to come here and also explain that it works. It's just not easy to execute.
