Since many ask about the choice of campsite. This trip was done to test gear for winter expeditions in the mountains above the tree-line and a campsite with less shelter from the wind was chosen on purpose for test purposes. The Hilleberg Nallo 3 is a tent designed in arctic Sweden for conditions like this.
It is not lost on us how much effort it takes to solo shoot these videos, especially the walking down the trail into the distance shots. Then you take it to another level by adding snow, in a winter storm, no less! Always enjoyable. Thank you!

Bravo, regardless of the equipment its still freezing cold with extreme winds. To make such a marvelous video under those conditions earns my admiration. A lot of work. Past memories of crawling out of my sleeping bag and putting on Outer gear and boots made me shiver when I saw you crawl out of your bag.
Tons of respect for doing this in a cold tent. As far as I am concerned, if you are going to camp in a heated tent, you might as well stay home and camp out in your living room.

It is winter camping. Good try-out for the tent. Very windy but with excellent visibility I wouldn't call it a snowstorm. Showing newbies what to expect and how to prepare is always a good idea.

I'm not going to be trying it myself, having dabbled a little with tents in a windy place many years ago - and only once & forever gave up such silly ideas ! Nice vid work and nice to see such a test camp. I've been researching winter gear for US regions that are often -45C and that is how I came across your channel. I have done numerous day-hikes for my photography but it would be even better to extend my solo ranges further from the usual places in Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming. You've given me additional food for thought, so thanks!
Hey Johnnie, thanks for watching! Would love to get out in the greater Yellowstone area in winter, Washakie, Teton wilderness, the Absarokas and Shoshone national forrest, do you venture out in these areas in winter?
@@NorwegianXplorer When I am able and not working, yes, whenever possible (not sufficiently often, though!). I avoid those areas most prone to high traffic and often seek lesser traveled wilderness areas. I have a number of places in the Absarokas, the Front Range up toward and including Glacier, the Bighorns (to include Bighorn Canyon and the Pryor Mountains) and in the badlands of western North Dakota still on my list to shoot in the winter. Probably enough to keep me busy for my remaining years, I admit :)
I had a hilleberg najamanti but found it way too noisy in windy conditions for sleep - even with earplugs ! I much prefer the semi geodesic or fully geodesic designs for exposed pitches. I really enjoyed this video and am very jealous of where you live !
Thank you for the wonderful video. Today is the first time I'll be camping in a long time. Although, for me it will not be snowing rain is in the forecast. While it will not be as cold as your camp, for some of us in Hawaii we're freezing at temperatures below the mid 60's. Tonight the temperature is predicted to drop into the 50's - I'm actually taking thermals to keep warm. Thank you again for your videos.

Good video. Tent looked like it was struggling a bit. One or two more poles make tunnel tent much stronger, stable and less noisy. That much flapping softens fabric and may make seams to leak

nice wind tunnel test. I might be wrong in real time circumstances but H. says pitch exit front side towards wind. that prevents inner fabric hitting you in head unless you position yourself other way. please correct me if I'm wrong. anyway environment is fooking terrible. I liked mini tornado at 21:30 Thumbs up!
Lol, yes good wind tunnel, hm, I didnt hear that from Hilleberg, it makes sense to me to have the entrance facing away from the wind so the interior doesnt get filled with snow, also it is lower in the opposite end. I might have to check up on that though. It worked really well having it facing this way, I sleep with my head towards the entrance
can I reply to myself? I'm obviously commenting from nice warm sofa. never done propper winter camp. But I know about winter, it's cold. It's also totally exhausting walking through the snow ( I was in hunting community and when you're without a rifle, your job is to walk through forest to scare wild animals towards hunters). Snow can be waist deep. I have done many summer and autumn stealth camping and i wonder... How mad you have to be to do it to yourself, this torture, mix of cold damp tired hungry combination. I hope this madness for cold doesn't come as a natural progression of normal camping. if it does, I wonder how close I am to this madness when I against my common sense will leave my cosy sofa and after packing all stuff will leave through the doors to somewhere I might not even survive after freezing my boools off.

I have Cousins in Oslo and my late Dad's 3rd Cousin lives there also... my maiden last name from my father was Gjavenis, over in Norway spelt differently, totally jealous of your winter's, this year I Wisconsin, USA we didn't see much, yet...

Facing these polar winter-conditions, the blizzard mercily sweeping the snow into your face.... as I already said : you are a valiant man, Jarl. And highly experienced. Wonderful images of the forest ! But... in the morning your shoes and overtrousers are icew-cold. Does all the warm stuff preserve you from frozen toes ? Did you really only eat two little heartformed waffles after all your efforts ?? That's few. Congratulations with your new tent, it seems it has an antichambre... ? Your gear has proved its efficiency and you don't have to worry about your next trip to the North Pole, you are ready! Tell me when you go ! I'll be there !

I hope this madness for cold doesn't come as a natural progression of normal camping. if it does, I wonder how close I am to this madness when I against my common sense will leave my cosy sofa and after packing all stuff will leave through the doors to somewhere I might not even survive after freezing my boools off.

I have Cousins in Oslo and my late Dad's 3rd Cousin lives there also... my maiden last name from my father was Gjavenis, over in Norway spelt differently, totally jealous of your winter's, this year I Wisconsin, USA we didn't see much, yet...

Facing these polar winter-conditions, the blizzard mercily sweeping the snow into your face.... as I already said : you are a valiant man, Jarl. And highly experienced. Wonderful images of the forest ! But... in the morning your shoes and overtrousers are icew-cold. Does all the warm stuff preserve you from frozen toes ? Did you really only eat two little heartformed waffles after all your efforts ?? That's few. Congratulations with your new tent, it seems it has an antichambre... ? Your gear has proved its efficiency and you don't have to worry about your next trip to the North Pole, you are ready! Tell me when you go ! I'll be there !
