I rented this about 15 years ago and played it for 3 straight days without turning off my NES before finally beating it. I wouldn't have guessed the game could be beaten in under 30 minutes - even with an emulator. Great work.
I always loved this game as a kid, even though I had no idea what to do in it, and it was way too hard for me lol. Nice to see it again after all this time, and finally get to see the end :)
I am literally speechless, I've spent so long playing this game. If I played all video games like that, no one can say you spent too much time playing video games.
i dont care if i did not finish this game... i just love the graphics its easy to the eye... the color combination is way ahead of time... last time i played this game it was like 15 years ago...
It's underrated. Part of the game's difficulty comes from its pile of obscure secrets that need to be uncovered in order for you to beat it. The unlimited continue mechanism is non-obvious, and you tend to die frequently. That said, I had great fun with the game back in the day, and I still consider it decent. The controls and hit detection are solid, and the rooms are fun to poke around in. The trippy charm of the castle - especially the catchy music - kept me coming back for more.
I remember renting this game as a kid feeling accomplished that I got as far as the well. This was after using a strategy guide, which was a really rare thing back then. There were 2 books, Red and Green. One of them explained how to... well, play the first part of the game.
God damn this game!!! I could never beat it!!! I never figured out how to get out of the infinite stairwell tower, plus the well and the bosses scared piss out of me! I was six. Great work, you got this down to a science.
That is useful. That number is the initial count of collected notes inside the first musical box mini-game you enter after you continue your game when you are dead.
From someone who put way too much time into this game as a kid - There are four final bosses in different rooms on the top floor. Only one is real, and the real one is random from game to game. Since the video creator manipulated luck for fastest time, they picked the correct boss on the first try. The outside platform jumping in the video is possible through mastery. There's a way for Milon to squeak out a bit of extra jump height to get on those upper platforms.
I appreciate your info on that. This game seems either popular or infamous in Japan. It was used in some Japanese fan-made creations like the Michael Quest animation and Hatsune Miku versions of the game's soundtrack. The Game Boy version, like most other Game Boy counterparts of NES games, seems superior, although they lack color. E.T. and Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 weren't the only ones that caused the 1983 video game crash, there were some others like Strawberry Shortcake for Atari 2600.
I have lucky got a strategy guy and beat this game when I am young (about 34 years ago I think ). Level 1 is a piece of cake, but I am stuck in Level 2 for about a year and fail to go beyond the monster duma down in the well, AFAIR. Then after a struggle I got to Level 3 and my skills become better and got pass the Level 3 Boss. And immediately in that play I get the final boss down and beat the game.
so many hours spent running around on the first floor trying to figure out what to do. and to think it was one simple door that misteriesly appears. i figured it would be something like that but DAM!!!
And it's one of Japan's favorite Famicom titles. It also was featured in the popular Japanese show titled Game Center CX (known outside of Japan as Retro Game Master).
Oh man. I remember this game from when I was a kid. I was terrified of it because of the level in the well where there are those demon guys and everything's on fire, lol.
i agree. i found most of the hidden doors when i was a child and my mind wasn't corrupted by being told certain things weren't possible, but i was only able to beat it later on in life when i discovered nnesterj and save states.
We rented this when we were kids, and what do you know, we never got past the first level. Maybe because nobody would ever figure it out with a walkthrough!
I've been wondering for the past 20 years how to proceed beyond the bottom door level. not impressed with those secret passages like how does one even figure that out? milon's 'secret' castle is an understatement. but thank you youtube and hisatoki for unravelling the mystery.
i definitely agree. i played this game with my brother when i was about 7 years old and even though it took a LONG time, we eventually figured out what to do in certain areas. did we ever beat the game? no, it was too hard for us. but it was definitely fun. we especially loved the music from the bonus stage!! :)
Most people who thought Captain Falcon never fought before his appearance in the SSB series didn't read or didn't believe in what the SNES F-ZERO manual's comic said before the SSB series was born.
I actually beat this game when I was a kid, and it was a pírated Cart from Japan used with a special adapter on an American NES, Took a while, but I actually ended up beating it, and without even be able to read a single instruction ingame cause it all was in japanese, also I would not have been able to figure it out by just reading cause the other version was in English and I did not know any English back then, I learned years ago. Of course no one is going to believe me just that easy.
This game was fun, yet confusing as heck. That and without tools to assist you the enemies later on can be very challanging. Good run through, you make it look easy, but without tools this game is pretty hard.
This game almost put me into therapy when I was about 12. I swear, it was so freakin' hard because of all of the secret doorways, etc. I probably only made it about a quarter of the way through.
Yes, I frequently saw Spelunker, but it actually started on the Atari 2600. Other games I seen Japanese gamers liked a lot are Action 52, The Cheetamen II, Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, Atlantis no Nazo, Ikki (known outside of Japan as Farmer's Rebellion or Boomerang), Challenger, Takeshi no Chosenjo, The Wing of Madoola, some anime/manga-based games and several others.
@braaaainz It's Galaga-style where you can shoot again as soon as the last one disappears. Sit right next to the enemy with a turbo controller and it's easy.
I beat it i too. Ta-ahhhyte!!! Lot's of continues. But, only one sitting. Paused for a couple hours. It's much, much harder than this dude makes it look. I'm not even sure I believe that he did this without editing....But if he did....he's awesome.
If you came to this video after watching the Angry Video Game Nerd, copy and paste this. Wow this speedrunner has way too much time and patience on his hands.
seems there are different slight variations of this game having different enemies etc..while same name maybe? confusing to know which version you'd be getting except maybe the yr of it difrenciates
Kids (yes, back in the day when the NES was exclusively a children-oriented market) were supposed to be able to beat this without destroying a TV? What the hell, Nintendo.
damn...u did it in 5 min. i spend 1 weeks of intense playing only to complete abt 50 percent of the game. well u can excuse me for tat since there is no internet 20 yrs back.
OMG....very nice....played this game when i was 4....so very hard...this game confused me i could get to the well and that was it...maybe now i can finally beat it xD
@TragicVlogTv he didnt jusr review that was an old episode the trailer was relased a long time ago and was on game trailers a long time ago he just uploaded the full version on youtube
yeh this game really is next to impossible hard to beat without at utter least a walkthrough. I wish theyd remake it for the wii or something. The game just had toooooo many fake walls and floors Felt like punkys snipe kitchen on crack, to anyone who gets that reference i give you massive props.
Whoah. That's incredible, I mean, I know Hudson tends to make pretty hard games, but that's just ridiculous. Still, AVGN would be fuming if he saw this. Also, you seemed to be shooting very quickly. Were you using a turbo controller or something?
動画の長さ的に1面クリアまでかと思ったら全クリしててビビりましたw
めっちゃ上手い‼️子どもの頃全然三階に行けなくて泣いて辞めたゲームだ🎵この歳になってスッキリしました✨
I rented this about 15 years ago and played it for 3 straight days without turning off my NES before finally beating it.

すごいの一言です
Oh my Gosh. That is awesome. I have owned this game for 20+ years and have never gotten past level one. My hat goes off to the guy who did this.
It's underrated. Part of the game's difficulty comes from its pile of obscure secrets that need to be uncovered in order for you to beat it. 今必死でやってるのに、バカらしくなるな(泣)

姫様も、まさか誘拐されて5分で助けてくれるとは思わなかっただろうな・・・。

Great work, you got this down to a science.
I've always loved this game. Thanks for the video. It was kickinrad.
That is useful.
That number is the initial count of collected notes inside the first musical box mini-game you enter after you continue your game when you are dead.
it's impressive to watch this speed run. At the same time it's also sickening that someone put this much time into such a cryptic game.
From someone who put way too much time into this game as a kid -

I've watched this speedrun about 10 times now and my mouth is wide open every time I finish it.
Ah, the day when I discovered that isolated blocks could be pushed to reveal shops...that was a glorious day indeed.
I love how the store is in Japanese, and the Ending is in English.
I have lucky got a strategy guy and beat this game when I am young (about 34 years ago I think ). Good god... you got that right... This game used to be so frustrating.. I still have not beaten it...
コンテニューはあるけど途中セーブとかパスワードが無いのがきつかった
And it's one of Japan's favorite Famicom titles. It also was featured in the popular Japanese show titled Game Center CX (known outside of Japan as Retro Game Master).
素晴らしい
Oh man. I remember this game from when I was a kid. I was terrified of it because of the level in the well where there are those demon guys and everything's on fire, lol.
This guy's a machine
i agree. i found most of the hidden doors when i was a child and my mind wasn't corrupted by being told certain things weren't possible, but i was only able to beat it later on in life when i discovered nnesterj and save states.
アイテムなしで早くて上手くて凄過ぎる!
まぁ、間違いなく世界一早い。
あんだけ、アイテム集めに苦労したのに…しかもチョッキなしで井戸ってすげー😆
We rented this when we were kids, and what do you know, we never got past the first level. Maybe because nobody would ever figure it out with a walkthrough!
wow this game is absolute madness

You must be the god of gaming.
Most people who thought Captain Falcon never fought before his appearance in the SSB series didn't read or didn't believe in what the SNES F-ZERO manual's comic said before the SSB series was born.

かわいいゲーム
Just how many people did they think would have the patience to play a game this confusing??
Yes, I frequently saw Spelunker, but it actually started on the Atari 2600. Other games I seen Japanese gamers liked a lot are Action 52, The Cheetamen II, Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, Atlantis no Nazo, Ikki (known outside of Japan as Farmer's Rebellion or Boomerang), Challenger, Takeshi no Chosenjo, The Wing of Madoola, some anime/manga-based games and several others.
TAS actually means "Tool assisted Speedrun"
最速スペランカー見た時の感覚だ・・・
自分にゃ絶対無理だっていう敗北感・・・
wow, had no idea there were secret doors outside the castle! no wonder i never beat this game. i couldnt get out of that damn well for the life of me!
In Japan, this game was successful, and had other sequels on Gameboy & Super Famicom.
i played this game for like 10 mins and i smashed it:)
ボス速攻がヤバ過ぎる
@HubbaBubba9849 It does have a continue BUT THEY MADE IT HARD TO FIGURE OUT
@braaaainz It's Galaga-style where you can shoot again as soon as the last one disappears. Sit right next to the enemy with a turbo controller and it's easy.
Woah, this game is cryptic as fuck.
RIP Hudson
すばらしい早さでクリアできますね。
That's some insane gameplay dude.. that's a good tip for bosses: Attack head on.. "poppopopopopppp"... whatever noise it makes when it dies.. lol
Im impressed
この野郎が一番うめえ
one of the first hardest game i ever beat on my own, i was so proud of my self
I beat it i too. Ta-ahhhyte!!! Lot's of continues. But, only one sitting. Paused for a couple hours. It's much, much harder than this dude makes it look. I'm not even sure I believe that he did this without editing....But if he did....he's awesome.
Awesome!
3Fのあの右上に、あの体力と装備で行こうなんて普通思わねーよw
氷の部屋事ですよね!
I can't think of a game harder than this. My 9 year old self finished battletoads. I couldn't do that now if my life depended on it.
That was Chuck Norris playing the first time he turned the console on and of course he never heard of the game too.
If you came to this video after watching the Angry Video Game Nerd, copy and paste this.
Wow this speedrunner has way too much time and patience on his hands.
man your a MONSTER!!! I beat this game but not that fast!!! :-0
seems there are different slight variations of this game having different enemies etc..while same name maybe? confusing to know which version you'd be getting except maybe the yr of it difrenciates
Oh well, he's great.
holy crap man awesome***
Kids (yes, back in the day when the NES was exclusively a children-oriented market) were supposed to be able to beat this without destroying a TV?
What the hell, Nintendo.
Damn! Of all the hours and days and even years I spent on this game (it was the very first NES game I received) and it could be beaten in 5 minutes?!
SO underrated...
Christ wagons, i had this when i was little. That's way too many secret doors.
damn...u did it in 5 min. i spend 1 weeks of intense playing only to complete abt 50 percent of the game. well u can excuse me for tat since there is no internet 20 yrs back.
Definitely some Turbo action on that controller/emulator, but damn, well done! And way to play it close with like 1 life bar left most of the time!
oh.. my... god...
NICE PLAY
and just how were we sapose to know all this stuff back then
OMG....very nice....played this game when i was 4....so very hard...this game confused me i could get to the well and that was it...maybe now i can finally beat it xD
lol its been up for over 2 years and it's finally getting attention.
Oh, and video description should say tool assisted. Its misleading.
Best. Comment. Ever.
Do you even use the green boxing glove and the potion to shrink? If not, do you even need to buy the potion?
this game looks like it could have had more potential if only they didn't make everything a secret and at least gave you a few continues
Talk about cryptic...
@TragicVlogTv he didnt jusr review that was an old episode the trailer was relased a long time ago and was on game trailers a long time ago he just uploaded the full version on youtube
