  • History comes alive. Join legendary American Sportsmen host and TV broadcaster Curt Gowdy in the 1990s on the popular television series Fishing the West with Larry Schoenborn. Curt challenges Larry to a personal one-fly contest with South Fork Lodge founder Spence Warner as they fish the South Fork River in Southwest Idaho. The group proves how fun fishing can be with some friendly competition. All three are no longer with us but left a legacy in their way on flyfishing history. From the start of the Jackson Hole One Fly, which was only the Snake River in Wyoming, Spence Warner was instrumental in moving some of the contest to the South Fork River and involving 84 guides. Building cooperation between the two states led to many South Fork stream improvement projects and support for boat launches. You will find this a very charming piece of history.

I remember watching a film of Kurt Gowdy and his son’s fishing a part of the North Platte River in Wyoming and going with my father and realizing we were in the same spot. Dad of course didn’t believe me til it came back on tv and I recorded it on dvd to show him. Really wish I could find that footage again. Thanks for reliving the start of my fly fishing life. I tied a lot of the flies in one of your books will always remember those days.

Curt really enjoyed that show because of being with his young sons and his favorite boyhood river.

They were the heart of the American sportsmen in the beginning. Phil and Bing Crosby were great friends. Bing suffered from terrible depression and abuse of alcohol. He locked himself in his cabin on the rising River in California. Phil would fly in and talk Bing out of the cabin. Bing really loved this flyfishing and helped him cope with his problems. Both of them spent lots of time with Curt who was a calming influence on their lives.
