  • The word "harem" comes from the Arabic word "harama," which means "to prohibit," and refers to the forbidden, protected area of a household. The Harem Rooms at Topkapi Palace, where the sultans and their families lived, is a complex of great architectural significance as it reflects the architectural styles of different periods from the 16th century to the early 19th century. Among the surviving Islamic palaces, it is particularly notable for this reason. The Harem Rooms are located inside the Second Courtyard and were built on top of the back gardens, and expanded over the centuries. It was separated from the other courtyards and areas where administration and reception were carried out by high walls, and was carefully hidden. After the construction of Topkapi Palace, the Old Palace in Beyazit was used as a harem and Topkapi Palace was used for administration and reception. However, there is information that there was a small harem building (the Women's Palace - Saray-i Duhteran) on the edge of the Golden Road at this time. The intense building and organization in the Harem, which was examined in four construction phases, began with the move of Kanuni Sultan Suleyman's Haseki Hürrem Sultan and her family to the Harem of Topkapi Palace, and continued until the 18th century. There are more than three hundred rooms, nine hammams, two mosques, a hospital, dormitories, and laundries in the Harem. The Harem has taken its current form as a result of renovations and additions over a long period of time. The general structure of the Harem consists of courtyards lined up one after the other. Beyond the gates separating these courtyards, there are dormitories, rooms, pavilions, and service buildings.
