Fantastic news for India’s *world-beating* defence ambitions:
    1. The *legendary* Astra MK3 has hit a speed bump, aka indefinite delay.
    2. The European consortium has declined Meteor missiles for the Tejas and Su-30MKI.
    3. DRDO’s *game-changing* AIP system for INS Kalvari is set to miss the 2025 deadline-because who doesn’t love a good delay to keep things interesting?
    4. The long awaited and much hyped Brahmos 2 project cancelled
India sure knows how to set lofty goals… and then expertly dodge them!

Realisation has dawned on HAL albeit a little late in the day. A RD33 led option shud have been the first option to be considered as Mig 29s of the UPG and K variants form a significant part of the IAF fleet and they r also manufactured in India.

Integrating the RD93 MA engine with the Tejas isn’t a feasible option, primarily because the JF-17 Block-III, its direct competitor, is already flying with the same engine. The very adversary that Tejas is meant to face knows the RD93 MA inside and out-its strengths, its weaknesses, and, most importantly, how to exploit them.
But then again, does feasibility even matter when it comes to India’s defense projects? Why not go ahead and spend a few more decades debating engine options while the adversaries continue fielding proven fifth-generation stealth fighters? After all, India has already perfected the art of announcing grand "indigenous" solutions while secretly relying on imports to fill the gaps.
Perhaps Tejas can take on the JF-17 and J-35 with a combination of wishful thinking, patriotic slogans, and ceremonial flyovers. Because who needs a well-thought-out, reliable engine when you can simply make do with press releases and endless testing phases? Surely, those are the real weapons India is counting on in a two-front-or maybe three-front-war.

The JF-17 is already flying successfully with three different types of engines:
    1. RD93 (Russian)
    2. RD93 MA (Russian)
    3. WS13 (Chinese)
Meanwhile, Tejas is still stuck with debates over replacing its underpowered engine-a decision that could take years to even finalize. Love the Indian planners for their unmatched ability to overcomplicate the simplest of decisions and delay progress indefinitely.
The JF-17, despite being labeled "inferior," by Indians, has proven its mettle with rapid development, operational deployment, and a growing list of export customers. In contrast, Tejas, which has been under development for nearly four decades, is still struggling to equip its own air force in meaningful numbers.

Nepal rejects the Indian Army Chief's request-no more Gorkhas for the Indian Army. Looks like the days of "bravery on rent" are officially over.
India, which proudly boasts of its "mighty" military, now faces the reality of losing one of its most iconic assets. Perhaps it’s time to find another way to fill the ranks with dalits, christian Sikh or Muslims or maybe just double down on slogans and ceremonies.

Making the decision to replace the engine of the Tejas would send the project spiraling back to the prototype stage, potentially adding 4-5 years for integration, testing, certification, and reliability checks. Even deciding to make such a move could take 2-3 years, given the glacial pace of decision-making. Can India afford such delays when the Indian Air Force is already facing the twin crises of dwindling numbers and aging jets?
The IAF is at its lowest fighter strength in history, and this includes jets that should have been retired over a decade ago, along with others that barely leave their workshops. Yet, somehow, India still speaks of fighting a two-or even three-front war. With what? Vintage aircraft from the Cold War era?
Meanwhile, China’s fifth-generation stealth fighters like the J-20 and J-35 are not just operational but actively evolving. Pakistan, too, is set to acquire the J-35 next year. Against this backdrop, India's "great hope" remains the Tejas-an aircraft that still struggles to meet basic frontline requirements decades after its inception.
But why worry? India seems to have mastered the art of living in denial. After all, grand declarations and airshows can always replace real capabilities. Maybe those 50-60-year-old jets can be polished up to match China’s stealth fighters-because nothing screams "superpower" like relying on museum pieces in an era of cutting-edge warfare.

Twin-engine fighter jets are neither invincible nor essential, especially when the adversary is just next door. They drain budgets, cost more to maintain and fly,
and are easier to detect and target due to their size and RCS. This is precisely why the IAF is perpetually short of funds, despite receiving a significant share of the defense budget.
But why focus on practical, cost-effective solutions when the goal is chest thumping, bragging and to impress at airshows, rather than field combat-ready jets? After all, who needs logic when you can dream of twin-engine wonders while relying on a fleet of aging, barely operational aircraft?
