  • The very kind people at M. Graham sent me some paints to review! I’m so excited to work with these paints as I’ve heard some wonderful things about them - all which proved to be true! This is an in depth look at the colors themselves, some color mixing, transparency and opacity, as well as practical application. Although I was supplied with these paints for a review, my thoughts and comments are my own in this unbiased review.

    I’ve watched several reviews posted from recent ones to others even older than this one as I try to get a better feel for these paints. Not one has mentioned the manufacturing w/renewable energy, recycling/reusing of water, and other environmental friendly/conscious things the company is doing except this wonderfully helpful video. Thank you for noting these aspects of the company because it is something important to many such as myself and I like to support companies that make extra efforts like this company. So I’ll be picking them up for sure now.

  • @gorway7

    Hi Denise, from what I understand, Staining is primarily a property related to pigment size as opposed to just loading, where the native size of some synthetic / organic pigments are small enough to ingress the paper and sizing structures, then the pigment will stain. However the degree of milling / mulling by individual pigment and paint manufacturers can influence this. I saw a presentation by John Cogley from Daniel smith that stated they mill their pigment to about 40 microns - that is actually quite big by pigment standards with many being typically 5 - 15 microns. That is why Daniel smith are renown for granulation and why possibly many may be easier to lift and stain less.

    Great review. I love M.Graham watercolor and gouache. I squeezed mine into half pans in metal paint tins and it took a day and a half to dry. And, that was in a warm spot in my kitchen. So, they do eventually dry, it just takes a while. On the down side, when you paint away from home, you have to transport carefully since the paint will still be a bit sloppy for a while.

    Thank you for this review. I just recently acquired a 15 color used set of m. Graham tubes for a great price. Most are different colors than what you have here. They were a dream to swatch. I have a small 6 tube set of DS and a huge 53 color set of W&N Pro. I purchased the W&N more than 10 years ago when I took a couple of lessons and then life interrupted my journey so I'm basically new to watercolor and was wondering if you have suggestions for the best colors to set up a palette for someone starting out. I think I will mostly lean toward landscapes and floral type paintings. I would like to purchase more m. graham but I figure I could mix and match from my other sets in the meantime.

  • @sachetfm

    I really love these paints! Their vibrancy and smoothness is quite brilliant. One characteristic I've noticed but haven't heard mentioned in any review is that They seem to be next to impossible to create "mud." I'm not sure if that's a happy coincidence with the paintings on which I've used them, or whether it may just be my imagination. The one drawback I've found is that given I live in a humid area, the paints never really dry thoroughly. This means I always have to use them in a covered palette or I end up with paint all over. Not a biggie but still rather inconvenient. I don't paint en plein air so that's not an issue. I would love input on the mud or lack of it for these paints. And thanks for such a thorough review, especially the way these colors mix.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад

      Hi Fontaine, hmm, given that the paints are SO pigmented, I think that you could make mud if you had some of the more opaque colors, however many of their colors are single pigment AND they have fewer colors than other brands. I talk about that in my newer Swatch with Me video for this brand. I just love them though and they're my second favorite brand behind Daniel Smith.

    • @sachetfm
      @sachetfm 6 лет назад

      In Liquid Color I actually did find another review of these paints in which the reviewer also noted the difficulty getting mud with these paints but I forget who it was. It may have been Mandy Goerge (sp?) Although I like them a lot, I probably won’t buy more because they are so gooey and even when in a closed palette find a way to get on my fingers and make a mess.

    I put some MG into a little travel palette over a year ago and moved to Mexico. I opened them up yesterday and they were set but I could easily pull a little colour on a dry brush. The only issue I had with this palette travelling for that long was a pan of white gouache that had dried, cracked and scattered. It got into the blue and red hit everything else stayed put.
    I do like the vibrant colours, all four of them, extremely limited palette as my initial goal was to see how I liked WC over acrylic. Jury is still out as they are so different from each other.

    Great product review video! My favorite are M. Graham paints, and I do keep them in a tiny travel watercolor palette. I let it dry for a good week before attempting to travel with it, and it has worked perfectly!
    I think a lot of people do not like the fact that it has honey because they think it will "melt" too easily or draw bugs. I have not had a problem with either issue.. I do keep my palette covered, and I have no problem with bugs attacking my paintings/journals.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  8 лет назад

      Thank you! Yes, I've heard from other artists that bug "issue" is a non-issue. I also use Mission Gold which and have tried Holbien both of which use honey, and no one seems to complain about them so it seems a little silly to me. I do understand that is the paints were too liquid to travel it might be a problem as well, but with the nine they sent me, I agree I don't have an issue with them sliding around. Perhaps in humid climates where the paint doesn't dry out it's valid.

    • @renmuffett
      @renmuffett 5 лет назад +12

      Mold wont be an issue if you let them dry as much as possible before using. Do not keep an air tight lid on them. They will be a little tacky to touch but will re-wet well. I lived in a very humid place when I had them and I learned the hard way. I kept them damp and used a air tight lid thinking they will last longer. no, I got mold. But now I never cover them in air tight covers and keep them dry and they are amazing that way.

    As I used the M. Graham, Pyrrole red, Ultramarine and the Azo green I own, I felt they were more densely pigmented than other honey based brands. But I also found that they seemed to lack the glow associated with the use of honey. I only own these three colors but your demo made me curious to try more. Honey does make a difference and I love my Sennelier watercolors more than most others. What do you think? This is so helpful and I've definitely decided to go with these as my first big water color purchase. For someone who is buying tubes (I'm thinking somewhere between 5-9) what are some must have colors? I notice in my cheap palette I use a lot of greens and blues, but want to expand what I paint to include more things than just my usual plants and botanicals I usually paint. I figure what better way than to buy some more expensive colors that I'll feel more inclined to use than just let sit around!

      HI Allee! Thanks for the kind words, and I'm sorry for the late reply. I'd definitely recommend a split primary palette, with some added earth tones if you use those. I have a Swatch with Me video so you can see the colors better, and a video on split primary mixing if those are helpful. You could get away with one yellow if needed, I'd recommend Hansa Yellow Deep (their version is PY97, a mid tone yellow rather than the PY65 most brands use for the same name). Let me know if you still have questions about the remaining colors if I'm not too late!

    Great review, you make some good points about how sometimes dealing with very vibrant and pigmented colours will depend on the use you make of them. I LOVE my M. Graham watercolours BECAUSE they can be so vibrant and transparent, and I am learning to use them when I want beautiful vibrant washes of colour, like light through stained glass. But you are right, my Daniel Smiths know how to be moody and textural with their granulation, which I won't get with M. Grahams.

    I just watched this review again because I love it. LOL! I believe that some of M Graham pigments such as the Naphthol Red PR12 are simply more heavily pigmented within the tube than say your Quinacridone Rose PV19 or others of the same paint measurement. The more pigmented the paint the more opaque its going to be, so you can use less of this pigment for the same vibrancy as any other brand of the same pigment. Bruce at handprint lists PR12 as transparent in every brand he tested including this one. Another thing is that M Graham doesn't list any of his watercolor as semi transparent or semi opaque. If its more transparent than opaque, he will call it transparent. If its more opaque than transparent he was just call it opaque. That was one of the negatives for me about this brand for me. No middle ground about transparency.

    The climate that you live in matters a lot with paint characteristics. I had no troubles with this brand of paint when I lived in the moderately moist climate of the East Coast USA but when I moved to the UK my M Graham paints became strictly studio paints because they never set up even sitting months in a palette. I love this brand of paint but it is something to keep in mind if you live in a moist or humid climate.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  8 лет назад

      That's definitely worth noting! I'm in drought-stricken California and although we have occasional humid days, it's been quite dry as of late. They set up very well in my open air palette and if our weather stays the same, I could definitely travel with them!

      One of the good things about M.Graham paints is the fact that they have honey in them. I live part time in Arizona and what I noticed was how fast the other manufactures of watercolor paints, dried out too much in my palette and cracked and were hard to re-wet. I just purchased M.Graham paints and I am anxious to see how they do in such a dry and arid area.

      Lynne Vyfvinkel Please let me know how the M. Graham watercolor paints behave in Arizona. I want to buy some. My watercolors dry up and crack as well. I thought that was normal, but since I've only used one brand of watercolors I had no other brand to compare them to. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for all your reviews! I recently bought (after watching almost all your videos 🙈) some Daniel Smith, Sennelier and M.Graham. I put them in empty pans, the DS dried in a day, the Sennelier and M.G. still feel wet/soft (I know they have honey in them) Question, do they always stay kind of wet or they get harder later on? And do I have to store them differently or can they say in the same palette as my DS? Thank you for your time and all your information! A big fan here 😊

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much for the kind words! Sennelier and MGraham will likely never dry hard. They will firm up enough to travel in most climates after a couple weeks, but will still be sticky if you touch them. I'd definitely recommend making sure the Senn and MGraham have time to dry out so that puddles of water aren't sitting in them before closing your palette, but I keep both of those brands in their own palettes as well as in a large studio palette with other brands and they do fine :)

PS, a friend of mine got a palette full of ants because of the honey. She flipped out. LOL! • @debracarter2982

      A fugitive color is one that changes under certain conditions such as sunlight, florescent light, humidity, etc. Such colors can darken, lighten, and even fade away entirely. You really don't want to use these if you're painting something to last.

I have a Mission Gold set, and have heard about Sennelier which both use honey and I was wondering if you have compared the honey based paints? Also I have seen reviews that say that Schmincke watercolors are the all around best and I wondered if you agree with that? I just love all the nerdy stuff as well as the painting! Lucky us! I have been watching a lot of videos of watercolor reviews thinking I might want to have more than just one brand of paint. I was taught that you should only have one consistent paint/brand in your pallet. I found an artist here on RUclips named Hullo Alice and she has a wonderful art style and she has several paints available to her. She herself has said that you don’t need so many options but I am amazed by her work and thought I might consider getting more options myself. I know you review paint for your channel and job what are your thoughts? I will continue to look for more of your videos. Oh I chose mission gold after trying several(read over 6 types/brands) of paints and eliminating my older preferences I used in school and after graduation.

  • @romelmadrayart

    I purchased some M. Graham watercolors. However, I have noticed that they get mold quite frequently, especially the gouache. I keep the tubes quite tight and closed. I cleaned my palette, desansitized properly, and squeezed paint straight from the tube. The M. Graham
    watercolor paints did not dry out by instead got white mold. I
    understand that leaving watercolor to dry out makes you lose the vibrancy. I am wondering if because M. Graham uses honey this is the reason for the mold. Is there anything I can do to stop the mold?. Must I
    throw out the entire palette of paint, which includes Windsor and
    Newton Cotman? On the Cotman and Mjello paints, I have not noticed mold frequently but M. Graham it seems to be quite common. Has anyone else
    had this problem?

    • @Ieat2much
      @Ieat2much 3 года назад

      I live in Seattle and never experienced mold with my M Graham- had them for 3 years now, Yes it doesn’t fully dry but I leave my palettes open for 24 hours every time I use it have ( Same with my eye shadow palettes when I have used a shadow wet on my lids 😛) not experienced mold with either. My palette is a mixture of Mission Gold, Qor, DS, Sennelier and M Graham and I haven’t noticed any lack of vibrancy but I am a beginner so not sure what to expect in terms of glow/ vibrancy. But the M Grahams and Mission Golds do pack a punch with colour payoff on paper.

  • @erins.5420

    I really like/love m graham paints! I wish I could afford to try more I specifically prefer to use them in my home palette because of the honey content the paint doesn't fully dry which is an awesome feature IMO as it lets the paint rewet easily, it doesn't have a drastic color shift from wet to dry on the paper. I live in super dry Phx. Az and In my tin palette I over filled a half pan on accident and let it dry, btw it will dry enough and not move once put in the palette and left to dry. Cobalt pigments tend to dry hard so if it's runny to begin with I'd put money on it that it will still dry solid enough to travel with. I over filled the half pan by only a smidge and I swear my hand was a magnet to that one color (Scarlett pyroll) and it ended up everywhere. Lol. The paint stY moist but not wet. Some I've heard had "mold" but what I experienced was a white film, honey is know as a moldistat of sorts so I can't call it mold but maybe something to do with being in a tin palette....

    • @erins.5420
      @erins.5420 8 лет назад +1

      Maybe it has something to do with being in a tin palette. I've noticed that seems to be the commonality when people experience that. So if you use a palette be it plastic, tin, or whatever just make sure you clean and dry out your palette after painting. These are such beautiful paints even some of the different experiences we have from one brand to another still wouldn't deter me from buying them one bit. And remember all paints have their quirks but that depends on if that quirk fits your needs or not. Oh and I love how these paints mix with other paints! Not just other m graham paints but other brands of paints like DS and W&N. There is something about it after it hits the paper and dries, it's a stunning quality I have come to love that at first I wasn't sure of. But that's when I knew nothing and didn't have the knowledge or experience as I do now. Sorry for the novel and jumping around from talking to just you to sounding general I love watercolor or specifically love pigment.

      Erin S. Sadly, the one I notice the most is my favorite deep blue from Mission Gold. I think it's a quality of the pigment itself (PB60) but it's heartbreaking to see it fade as it dries. Thank you again for supporting my channel :) Feel free to let me know what you'd like to see next!

      Well I was going to ask if you have tried Sennelier yet? You can email them at productinfo@savoirfaire.com with your mailing address requesting to try their paints. They sent me three colors. Sennelier yellow light, opera, and cerulean. I use their paints already but one can never have too many I say!! Swatching paints is something I can never pass up. It helps me look more into a certain color or brand so I'm all for that. As for painting I work with botanical watercolor/illustration (realistic). But I love watercolor so I'm easy to please. I'm a technical junkie so everything that makes up the paints and paper my hyper focus kicks in and next thing I know he sun is coming up. So if any of that interests you, I will for sure be here to watch it but so far I've watched all your most recent uploads and enjoying what you're doing.

    Hi Denise, love all your videos and your voice is so soothing to hear!😍I am totally new to watercolours painting but i am interesting in watercolours for a long time but just haven’t got the time! The one month ago i told myself that i will try it out! So I started searching and watching so many RUclips channels and found a few channels which I loved and yours is one of them! So, after all the ‘research’ i think i love most in all the reviews are D Smith and M Graham but i think D Smith is more expensive. And i also think both brands do have their own standards/grades, eg D smith has series 1 to 5. So i am thinking, in your reviews, are you using the more higher grades in each brand?🤔
    Since i am a newbie in watercolours, i also come across some student grades watercolours which are good for a newbie to practice. I found a few reviews on the Sakura Koi, haven’t bought it yet but i think i like it, which some says they are ‘chalky’🤔 and opaque! Is that a problem or a challenge in our painting? What’s your view on my choices here? 💜

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 лет назад

      Hi there. The series represent price due to pigment expense, not quality. For instance, cobalt is more expensive that an earth color to purchase and turn in to paint. Between student and professional brands, it matters, but Daniel Smith and M Graham are both high quality professional brands :) I don't care fore Koi personally.

    I wonder if the lack of granulation is because of the honey? Perhaps they need to grind the pigment more finely to work with the honey. I think the length of this video is perfect. Thank you.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      These pigments seem to be ground incredibly finely. I would imagine that the lack of granulation is due to the honey, perhaps in part with how fine they are, as other honey-based paints that I've used do not seems to have much granulation either. Thanks for the feedback on the length of the video! :)
