The only thing holding him back in the conversation was his team's records, and with the instability in the organization between the different offenses and head coaches and management being the revolving door that it was, it's understandable. And then he gets traded and instantly wins a Super Bowl with the Rams, proving his worth to them instantly on a great playoff run in a season where he made Cooper Kupp look like GOD.
