Yeah, thats sort of the thought when you're composing a soundtrack. Instead of writing several different pieces, you would write only one theme and have all the rest of the soundtrack be variations and I find that it gives everything more of flow. Mind thats not that's not the only way of doing things. Hope that helped. :)
