Wexford to Enniscorthy by Iarnród Éireann, March 2017

  • The railway north of Wexford opened in 1872. It is particularly picturesque as it follows the Slaney, one of Ireland’s notable salmon rivers, as far as Enniscorthy. There are tidal reed beds which are home to wildfowl and other interesting wild life (see 03:52). South of Wexford O’ Hanrahan Station trains trundle at Health & Safety speed along the quay on a line built for goods traffic that no longer passes through this once-busy little port. The track is “Irish Gauge” 1,600mm/5’3”. Irish railway engineers took the gauge with them to Australia.
The line is part of the Dublin-Rosslare Europort route, but the future of this section between Gorey and Rosslare is in doubt due to declining passenger numbers. Ireland’s road-centric and Dublin-oriented transport policies may be partly to blame. There are more Irish votes in a new motorway than a useable train service. Commuter rail services between Dublin and Gorey (now effectively a suburb of Dublin) are considered more important than services further south. There are just five trains a day southbound and (curiously) four northbound on the Gorey-Rossalare section. New signalling in 2008 also saw the removal of some passing places on the mostly single track line, thereby reducing timetabling possibilities for an enhanced service. For longer than anyone can remember, the 17:55 train from Rosslare harbour is scheduled to depart five minutes BEFORE the incoming ferry is due to arrive, a truly Irish version of integrated transport. (Iarnród Éireann timetablers blame this on the needs of Dublin DART trains 175km to the north).
This railway should be a valuable asset for the people of the Sunny South East and could be developed for tourism, but it is in danger of being lost.

Nice train trip - must do that section some time. From Bray to Wicklow Town and from Rathdrum to Arklow is really spectacular - those sections I did travel!

Hello. It is a traditional Irish jig called "The Boys of Tandragee". This recording is by a Belfast group called Darragh Folk who have since disbanded, so the link to their website in the video description may no longer work, but the tune is quite well known so there may be other recordings available.

Are there ever freight trains on that line?

Sadly there are now none, and it is a huge missed opportunity. Before Brexit there were three ferries a week from Rosslare to continental Europe; there are now thirty-four and the roads around Wexford are often choked with lorries. Many of the ferries carry unaccompanied freight (i.e. lorry trailers without cabs and drivers) so a ship-rail transfer would seem to be the obvious solution
