The audacity to assume that the Russian student is interested to change their government or politics. Americans should stop assuming that everyone want to be like America, that’s not really the situation on the ground 😢
Exactly. And the same goes with values too. America on both left and right tends to assume other cultures value the same things that we do. Different countries have different value too
Catherine wasn't "Great" to Putin, not because she was a woman, but because she was not Russian born. Condi messed up on a number of historical facts, sad. "The Ukraine" was once a region in the Polish/Lithuanian Commonwealth which was not an "Empire". While right-bank Ukraine belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until late 1793, left-bank Ukraine had been incorporated into Tsardom of Russia in 1667 (under the Treaty of Andrusovo).
During World War II, in what were the only two invasions of the United States during the war, small parts of the Aleutian islands were occupied by Japanese forces, when Attu and Kiska were invaded. Rice is incorrect on history of US being attacked.
the problem of the US is the inconcistence of its policiesn , the peoples are tired, Saudi Arabia is ok but Venuzuela no, vietnam IS Ok but Cuba no, bolsonaro is ok, Lula no, climate transition is ok, but let's get oil from Alaska, it is not ok for the great powers to dominate the neighboring countries, with the exception if it is the US
Russia is not and will not be isolated. Russia has the support of the Global South, which is 80% of the world population. The US/NATO is only 20% of the world population (the ex-colonizers that ruthlessly control other countries). The EU is weakened since the war because they were gullible. Now they pay more on energy to the US energy corporations than they did to Russia. Until this day, I dont see the benefit of EU breaking their good relationships with Russia. Except, it would benefit the US energy Capitalists and military industrial complex. The US "liberal democracy" has initiated endless wars, invaded countries that want decide on their own, and funded coups to overturn elected governments because they don't support the US liberal policies. Lastly, the greatest of the great powers don't use bombs or military bases to conduct diplomacy. It's the 21st century, we need multiple great powers to counter balance. No one country should be the only great power. You should also mention that during WW2, the Russians fought the hardest. They lost 30 million people defending their country and Europe. They were an ally of the US and thus, are considered good people. And, yet today, they are conveniently the "bad" guys. Why? Perhaps, because they no longer wish to follow the US liberal policies which benefits the elite Capitalists and the 20% West that can't live without the resources of the Global South. There are many formats of systems of governance. Better ones might also be developed. The US gov is force feeding everyone else (with guns and bombs) to adopt the US brand called "Liberal Democracy". Let's just know that the rest of the world are smart and good, not dumb and evil, like what Ms Condoleeza seems to think. They are fully capable of finding their own unqiue system of Democracy. They don't need the US gov to tell them what to do. Respect others, then they will respect you.

I have a tremendous of respect for Condoleezza Rice, but saying democracies don't invade other countries is being disingenuous at best. What was Iraq invasion all about? Oh! I forgot that falls under the category of "mistakes" that democracies sometimes make.
Ms. Rice is so thoughtful, educated, and well spoken. I always learn new things from her, especially about Russia, since that's a big part of her expertise. I agree with her that the young foreign students that are experiencing democracy-based societies should go work to change their countries for the better. I'd also like to get her take on the world organizations that are pushing Marxist ideology across tte west. And how do we citizens stop that from taking over or democracies.
I appreciate this thought but I do not think that is likely. Living in a major western capital and ‘pillar of democracy’ which is an academic hot spot AND is experiencing the usual western metropolitan issues (overwhelming crime, lack of enforcement of law, lack of community and family cohesion, high tax/administrative state burdens, polarisation, hyper-progressivism), there is little for Chinese, Indian, Singaporean or Hungarian students to write home about. 9/10 interactions with such people reveal (i) their sole motivation is the desire to grasp the West’s career opportunities, and (ii) they dislike living in the West because of the ever-growing social unrest and progressivism. They are essentially a bourgeois version of Latin or North African economic migrants. These students want the monetary benefits without the requisite socio-political assimilation. Don’t expect this to change until the poster-child western societies of NY, LA, D.C., London, Paris and Brussels are cleaned up, and until a new political philosophy is re-stated which left and right can rally around. At this point, judging by the scale of the culture war, I don’t think that much can unite western societies other than an all-out war.
Western nations progressed tremendously due to industrial revolutions. Not due to ideology. When the Soviets embraced democracy, it imploded. China learned from the Soviets mistakes and did not embrace democracy. Instead, Chinese banks on it's own Confucius values and blend it with a bit of socialism. These enable it to continually evolves and improves. Today, China progresses so much that it's going to overtake the US GDP very soon. Saudi and many other kingdom nations are also doing very well. They rely on their own values, civilization and great governance to progress too. In short, it's not ideology that matters the most for prosperity, progress and world domination. It's great governance. Ideology like democracy is less than 300 years old. Confucius way of governance lived >2000 years. Other civilization in the middle east has thousands of years experiences too. But it's the industrial revolutions that raise the level of world domination. Whoever possesses the best technology and governance will dominate the world. It's not ideology.

Does putting a priority on having Russian students in US educational institutions, for which Secretary Rice made a good case, sound like affirmative action? Or just a way to maximize the potential impact of the education they provide? Or both.
Democracy is a moral issue because a democracy would not invade another country? Um Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Libya, Panama? This is where you lose the moral argument.
Yes, this lady is a scholar but the biggest thing she fails at is why dictators are loved by the masses and stay in power. It's because people love their cultures.....inner truth.
I don’t think she fails to grasp that. Rather, she directly addresses it by saying the US should not be getting into this ‘with us or against us’ ideological brinkmanship. You can’t make Serbia accept LGBT-friendly marriage, India introduce net-zero legislation, or Hungary house immigrants. You can’t condition partnering with these countries on such deep reforms - it’s why the Turkish relationship with the EU and US soured. You have to cooperate based on real and achievable goals without bullying people outside of their comfort zone. Leave the bullying to China and Russia. This is easier said than done for just one reason - unfortunately the US electorate has grown very activist and progressive. You cannot be a US president who is friendly with even a mild dictator or you’ll have woke protestors outside the White House. The problem comes from within.

Thus sail our ships, unhesitating In the face of death and certain pain. The sacrifice of our forces armed, A tragic loss, a heroic gain. Keeping hearth and home, children, unharmed, In our land of freedom…it’s these brave, Daring or desperate ones who choose To fight the conniving, wretched knave. Trying to deceive us with a ruse. But will their ever descend a night When, like Byzantium, we will lose? When a mere 5,000 choose to fight To defend a way of life we call home? Can threat of certain defeat ignite The fire for warriors to roam? Or will luxury trump discipline, And our achievements be tilled to loam…

PS: Must mention the good Dr's who helped us through the pandemic reporting good science, helping leaders around the country and Pres Trump with Dr Atlas taking the podium bringing order to chaos, with authority. Dr Jay Batacharya with his early information from the baseball teams was invaluable for this old guy at least, not to mention the GB Declaration right down the road from me in the Berkshires. Censored by our Medical leadership here in the states along with big tech. Despicable! Thanks to them all!! Love them all. I recommend Hoover for learning venues on many subjects online. They have enriched my life in my late 60's and now 70's. I'm grateful.
"...great powers don't mind their own business ... great powers want to shape the international system..." So may I ask at what and at whose expense, Ms. Rice? I'm not a fan of China, but I don't think the US is in a better shape either to maintain a unipolar world, not in this day and age when other countries and blocks have the potential capacity and capability for self-determination.
Russia is hardly isolated and is now leading the Brics union which has a larger population than the west and controls most of the precious minerals, oil, gold and food. Rice is out of her tiny mind.
China has a great huge potential to became a vibrant democracy in the world just as the USA is, and eventually they will became one. The Chinese are setting a stage for that sorta transformation in my opinion.
We have been deluding ourselves intellectually about this for FAR too long, and we need to stop it! We’ve been hearing this same line for DECADES now about how “China WILL democratize if we just continue trading and including them.” If anything, the OPPOSITE has been happening lately under Xi Xinping, and they’ve already shown how hungry they are with Hong Kong. It’s STUPID! It’s rather like continuing to feed a Vicious Shark in the hopes that the Vicious Shark will come to love eating Delicious Fish and not go after YOU next!
China has no incentive to democratise now. In the words of Hoover’s own Professor Kotkin, China is acutely aware of what happens when the regime liberalises the economy - the Party necessarily unravels. The difference between the CCP and the Soviets is that the former have transformed the regime from literal (and economically unsustainable) communism to authoritarian capitalism. By harnessing free markets to an extent while maintaining a grip on the amassing of power in private economic structures through direct CCP oversight, they have ensured an authoritarian China will remain a thorn in the world’s side for a long time to come. Economic challenges exist for them, but collapse is nowhere to be seen. The only other hope for unraveling or democratising is the people themselves, but the populace of China is surprisingly supportive and healthily fearful of their government. If the last century was America’s, this coming century will be a long-winded stalemate between US-led and China-led alliances.

CR please run as independent
I don’t recall ever hearing such a strong closing argument.
in my opinion education should be inclusive & not exclusive, folks 😀
Very interesting
Very candid discourse.
Dear G. D help us. Wake tfu people.
Probably one of the smartest person on the planet
Yes, this lady is a scholar but the biggest thing she fails at is why dictators are loved by the masses and stay in power. It's because people love their cultures.....inner truth.
Dictators are not loved because it's easy for them to brainwash or reeducate their people.
There is a great need to champion democracy and the free market capitalist systems.
😮😮😮If Condalezza is worried about US public education system AS A REAL CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN! Says it all about American's politics in 2024.
Go Condi!
A pale blue dot, our home, it we call,
Floating alone as if lost in space,
They say it’s a small world after all
Every time we meet a familiar face.
When a strangers face at MEPS, you meet,
Pause…in their eyes you can find a trace,
Of them standing there, in their bare feet.
Walking in skivvies like a duck,
To see if they’re fit to defeat,
With healthy body and touch of luck,
The rattling saber’s and sad chest thump.
Of little big men running amok,
On the seven seas, daring to bump
Autonomous nations off the map;
Cut them down, leave them a burning stump.
Who will give them their deserved slap,
For those who can’t, who will strongly stand?
Who will stop them when they pull more crap?
When they make an unruly demand,
Of weaker nations who stand little chance,
Against that fleets encroaching command.
Merchants harassed by a bullies glance,
Or forced to flee from a fearsome blockade.
Who stands guard with torpedo and lance,
To keep clear the way for those waylaid?
What sentry will challenge in the night,
Piracy and nations, renegade?
Sailor, it’s you who must project might.
Naval force, for Honor & Glory.
With courage to see and set things right.
Giving honor to her great history,
Those who’ve died guarding the open sea.
From our dread foes inflammatory
Aggressions to control what is free
For fishers, merchants and ships that cruise.
But not those who work in secrecy.
Law and order they flat-out refuse
To follow; they cannot comprehend.
How their savage greed works to confuse
Their thoughts such that they can’t apprehend
Their dark state of utter degradation.
Lady Justice sails to reprehend
These scurvy merchants of stagnation.
Her scales are tipping, ready, Her sword,
To defend the civilization
Bound to Antiquity by a cord
On which the just walk, the guilty, hang.
It’s the Law which mankind can’t afford
To sever, by it, Liberty rang
Around the world, reverberating
Still in Church and State, with every bang
On Independence Day, negating
Despotism’s tyrannical reign.
Thus sail our ships, unhesitating
In the face of death and certain pain.
The sacrifice of our forces armed,
A tragic loss, a heroic gain.
Keeping hearth and home, children, unharmed,
In our land of freedom…it’s these brave,
Daring or desperate ones who choose
To fight the conniving, wretched knave.
Trying to deceive us with a ruse.
But will their ever descend a night
When, like Byzantium, we will lose?
When a mere 5,000 choose to fight
To defend a way of life we call home?
Can threat of certain defeat ignite
The fire for warriors to roam?
Or will luxury trump discipline,
And our achievements be tilled to loam…
Articulate and clear views.
Love Mdme Director - Love Hoover - and the many excelent Fellows. Especially the Good Fellas whom I havent watched in months - in hardship for a bit.
Also Battlegrounds - Uncommon Knowledge - Stephen Kotkin - John Yu and so many others, too many to mention.
I wish she could be our president
Russia is hardly isolated and is now leading the Brics union which has a larger population than the west and controls most of the precious minerals, oil, gold and food. Rice is out of her tiny mind.
Rice for President!
Got my vote
Propaganda!
But see what is happening in usa
Mrs Rice is a treasure
She's a national treasure.
Great session!
She is rational, analytical and nationalist. Really enjoyed her perspective which I mostly agree.
Surely they will defend themselves
Hmmm.....i don't think this democracy works the way Ms Rice just described.
Why are we not nominating her for President...?
Viva Russia and China
Imagine what a. Great president she would be
God bless Ukraine 🇺🇦🙏🏼❤️ i wish we could help more
Condy should be president
Wow- short and insitefull.
"Lee Kuan Yews don't come around very often."
China has a great huge potential to became a vibrant democracy in the world just as the USA is, and eventually they will became one. The Chinese are setting a stage for that sorta transformation in my opinion.
Lol, CCP will never loosen their grip on power. If anything, Xi Jinping is tightening his grip on Chinese power.
It has zero possibility of becoming a democracy. Citation: Chinese history.
@@LordRykard9376Japan for 3000 years of its royality never had democracy. And then lo and behold they adopt Meiji reforms.
