I was a meat and potatoes guy back home. Here you can't help but to eat healthy. I'm 4 notches in on my belt without even trying. Things are cheaper here. But most shop owners see gringos and see money. So be careful. Find a place you like and use them. When they know you live here things tend to be cheaper. Yes I'm 6 ft 1 inch and stand out but they get used to you fast. I'm a gringo here and understand that. No one here uses the word gringo. LOL At least not to my face.

We go to Belize every year and I LOVE IT!!! It is just so beautiful. There is a way to avoid carb overload though... Just grilled chicken or fish for dinner with a side salad or steamed veggies! Easy! Fruit plates for breakfast, ceviche for lunch, just go easy on the corn chips. I will do fry-jacks or pupusas on the weekends though! My special treat. I stay away from rice and beans as much as possible, they are delicious and I love them but I only eat them if I am invited out and it is served to be respectful of my hosts. Then I scarf it down! They dont slather their food in oil or butter either so that is a big plus! And I eat the hell out of marie sharp's! Give me a plate of grilled wings and some Marie Sharp's and I am HAPPY!

Hubby and I have oceanfront land in Belize and we've decided to sell it. It's boat access only, but not far from the road to Corozal. Living off grid sounded great, but arthritis is taking it's toll, so growing our own food and praying the boat starts, isn't stolen or gets a leak is too much for us as we age.

Some that you left out- insects, rough dirt roads, only basic healthcare, and limited selection of items in stores. So if you want to follow a recipe here, forget about it. But you can get monster cheeseburgers at many small places. Life here is much slower and that's probley why you're coming here. For sure find a hobby or 6 to keep yourself from going stir crazy. I bake, play guitar, hike, fish and go swimming. The sites here are breathtaking . Best of all the people are so, so nice here. I live in Cayo now after living in California for almost 40 years. I would not trade this for LA again. I never went to shopping malls, hated them, too crowded. Clifton Hyde is the best mechanic this side of the country, but he will travel…….he is honest, trustworthy, intelligent and well versed on fixing vehicles, even the newer ones like mine.
And happy to see some people leave. 😅

@@gisellebze lol, don’t get me wrong when I say this…..but I wish I could educate Belizeans on how to elect officials. I think this country could be in better standings internationally and domestically, but the politicians that are elected are in it for their own financial gains and not for the interests of the country. And it seems Belizeans always want to make a note of saying, “my country has done nothing for me” instead of them saying how can I make Belize better. Like president Kennedy said, “ask not what your country can do for you, but ask, how can I make my country better”
Young Belizeans are leaving at an alarming rate. We need to keep the youths here to help change the narrative of PUP or UDP. Just my opinion. But FYI, other than Cayo I would live in Caye Caulker or Placencia.

I am looking for somewhere to move to when I retire next year ( 2025) and here are my most important things I am looking at. I want to know that there is plenty of potable drinking water? I also love playing disc golf, so are there any real good sized city parks where i can spend the day throwing my discs? ( 15-25 acres in size is ideal ) Can I work as a janitor for some business part-time / Full Time while collecting my social security? Can I get by without owning a vehicle or scooter?

Hi! I’m not really familiar with parks in Belize being 15-25 acres in Belize. In fact, we’re not real big on parks in Belize. You can work as long as you apply for a work permit. I’d contact a lawyer to assist with that.

10 year expat living in San Pedro. The pro's and con's are specific to each district. Here in San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) the pro's are: The only English-speaking country in Latin America. Two-to-one dollar exchange peg. I have fiber-optic Internet service. Cell service is solid. No fast food is a plus but you can get some outrageously good hamburgers and fries at many places. Street vendors everywhere selling vegetables and fruit so you can eat as clean as you desire. Lately we've had Supermarkets springing up (or upgrading) that offer American-style grocery experience. There are plenty of hardware stores (but quality is mostly lacking). Hospitals are also developing and improving here. If you are able to work here for American-based income you can get a significant tax break.
Cons: Seasonal sargasum (floating sea weed) is fouling the beaches all over the Caribbean. Mosquitoes, sand fleas, and sea lice can get rather thick at times. There is also a seasonal tide that floods the lower lying areas every year. American goods are much more expensive. Recent road improvements here paradoxically made traveling MORE dangerous because of speeding, reckless maneuvers, and lax traffic enforcement. The heat and humidity in the Summer months can leave you exhausted even with the slightest activity. Air conditioning can get really expensive depending on use and how much of the house you are cooling. The electrical grid has numerous outages and the water pressure during peak tourist season is nearly non-existent.
