D DEMCHAK if someone is threatening my life, kill is the most accurate word to use. Castle doctrine, self defense, etc - just saying it exactly as it is.
Marco G A thumbnail of a house with text that says "Home Security" for a video that is entirely about home security, is basically the opposite of clickbait.
A tip from LEO... When placing cameras, be mindful that you want to try and capture faces. Far to often the pics and video we get is from a camera high up and looking down. Great for seeing what the person is doing but bad for any hope of identifying them.
* Don’t post when you’re out of town on social media. * If you are gone, create the illusion someone is home, through lighting, etc. * Lock the door to your fuse panel * Make sure you are arming your alarm at night * Keep landscaping trimmed and eliminate / minimize hiding spots. * Be mindful of barriers between the front door and your bedroom / loved ones bedrooms. If there are two doors between, get in the habit of closing and locking both at night. Additional seconds to react and prepare in the event of a home invasion in the middle of the night will make a huge difference when waking from a deep sleep
Very good presentation; I’m a retired security professional, both military and civilian on several continents; I practice the same principles of home defense ... keep it up!
Would love for you to do a video on overlanding/camping security. How you set up your site and monitor critters or people coming though your site in the middle of the night. I live in Arizona and we do have to worry about people crossing the border and walking up on your site.
First 8 minutes are remarkably common sense. Things I have to constantly remind my lovely wife about. Don't leave the garage opener in the vehicle, don't keep the screen doors in front of the doors unlocked so you at least have something between you and someone else you don't know if you choose to answer the door. I also, have mags and various weapons staged/stashed around the house - not paranoid. I think of it as low probability risk management that can suddenly become high probability if a series of other circumstances were to transpire first. Great video as always.
12:58 - I believe it was said in Rhodesia that "an obstacle is only an obstacle if covered by fire". Anything that buys you time to respond(be that to arm yourself, contact the police, retreat to your safe location, etc.) is a worthwhile measure. People breaking in while they know you're home are relying on surprise to take the initiative from you, but it is a very short-lived commodity. Five seconds gives you a chance to get back some of that initiative.
Good stuff as always! I live in a suburban area so have neighbors all around. I did install a couple decent solar LED lights and they work well, and are programmable motion activated. The funny thing is they apparently look like cameras too because I have had two neighbors ask if they were. Probably only tip I would add is to lock your gates too if you are in a suburban/urban setting. We have a side gate and a back gate to our alley. We keep our outside lights on at night so we can always see what’s going on outside. We always lock the man door to the garage. There are some safety tips on garage door security too to prevent the “coat hanger” break in, and good to use a door track lock especially when out of town
I like the Wyze cameras. They aren't super 4k and have limitations, but for the price they are great. You can buy a bunch and scatter them everywhere, and even though they need USB power you can put adapters on outside light sockets and power them from that. Combine those with dusk to dawn LED bulbs and you get a fairly cheap start down the slippery slope of home security.
Thanks for all of the great videos...I recently found your channel and you're a great opinion/idea-sharer and delivery is great, too! Just a tip or something to think about: When working with safety films on windows, proper installation for the type of window glass and frame (wood vs. metal vs. other materials) is key. At work (public school district) we've been testing out all sorts of window films to help protect our students. We spent a lot of time and $$ testing out different brands, options, varied window setups, etc. and found that we could break through almost all of them fairly quickly and it depended 100% on type & quality of product combined with proper install (or not). Also, just something to consider with window film, you might be slowing your EXIT in case of a fire or other emergency inside the house, so just keep that in mind, too.
I keep both or my porch lights on all night. Recently someone was knocking on our door at 11:30 at night and when we looked out we couldn’t see who it was. Turned out to be a cop and everything was ok but it definitely made us think. Always want to see who is out there at either the front or back door. Great video mike! Just got my associate holster made by you in the mail yesterday. Love it! 😎
I have a little 5 pound Yorkie poo who couldn't hurt a fly. But he is great at alerting me if there is any irregular noise. He's the best house alarm ever
I keep my xds 9 on me when I’m home. I live in a sketchy apartment in Denver. I had a guy knock on my door the other day. I just watched him through the peep hole with my gun until he left. I was walking my dog the other day when 4 guys ran out with guns yelling at another group. I was right in the crossfire. I took off running. I have a wife and two kids to protect. We are moving into a house in a nice neighborhood next month. Thank God.
I also have a black lab/pit bull. It barks and growls mean. He is very sweet, though. He is 70 pounds of muscle and could do some damage in a bad situation.
Excellent video Mike! We took your advise and made some quick and easy changes already. We still have a few more things to do to make our home more secure. Your video helped us to be aware of many things we didn't think about before. Thank you for being so thorough 👍
Just to add, homeowners should be cautious about only using security devices and systems relying on the homes power and internet supply. Bad guy could easily switch off your breaker. So battery operated devices and mechanical security devices are a priority.
Good advice, guy tried to gain access to our residence and found cables under our deck and ended up cutting our phone and internet line. Luckily nothing came of it but could have been bad.
This is one of a handful channels where you get good useful info and not a bunch of silly or not well thought out stuff. One thing I would add is generic alarm signs and window/door stickers outside. Could be of use in the unlucky event of a court proceeding. I use the Wuloo driveway alarm actually on each side of the house. With up to 12 months on a fully charged sensor its very user friendly. Great video and I'll bet it will help out a lot of folks.
HELLO FROM WASH.DC i'M JUST A CITY GUY, BEEN WATCHING YOUR CHANNEL THE LAST 8 MONTHS, AWESOME! YOUR CONTENT AND HOW YOU EXPLAIN THE INFO IS 5 STARS,! i'VE LEARNED SO MUCH, KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB YOU'RE DOING! THANKS! T.M. TURNER
To that first point about locking stuff. A few weeks ago, before all the lockdowns and stuff, somebody tried 3 times to crack my combination key. Obviously, I programmed it to something not totally obvious. After the door locked them out of trying again, they moved on. Something I'd never expect living in the neighborhood that I do, but there ya go. Definitely an opportunist looking for a 1234 code lol.
When living overseas on the top of our walls we would break old bottles and cement them in all along the top, but you may want to check your local laws.
Another thing you should do, take one screw out of each hinge and put a 3 to 4 inch screw in there. Most hinges are four screws in each hinge that just go into the trim. Good tips though.
one thing I would mention is HVAC, spend the cash to get a small unit or repair an older unit, those window ac units can make an easy entry. Id assume all they have to do is shove the unit in and then climb into the window
Mike, I watch just about all your videos and Good Job! Just one comment from a retired LEO firearms training officer (Me). Never say I'll kill them and/or I killed him/her. Good simple tips for home security. It's surprising how many people are so naive about home security. I carry all of the time in my home. It just makes good sense.
A buddy of mine in the LAPD told me a while ago they did a survey of burglars who are currently in jail, and the number 1 deterrent was actually the American Flag out on display. It tended to mean you were more patriotic and more likely to be a proper home defender.
I haven’t seen any studies on it, but I have heard the same, that Patriotic things or hunting decals/tacticool (lol) stickers on vehicles are enticing for criminals because there’s a higher chance they can steal a firearm or find other valuable things. Makes sense. My Flag still hangs high though!:)🇺🇸
Great video in this time of epidemic. I just recently got my car stolen and my neighborhood has seen an increase in crime ranging from vehicle theft/break ins to stolen packages. This COVID outbreak has cause financial hardship and people are resorting to crimes. Could also be that there is less punishment to those who commit crimes during this pandemic. It's about to get ugly if people have no means of income.
Great info, I'm really a big security buff, I can't stress enough the importance of taking the time to really evaluate your home security. I have invested in all that you discussed in your video and I sleep well at night. If you care about the safety of your loved ones make the investment. Don't become a victim and regret not having some of these items when you might need it the most. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I don't think that most people realize how easy a door can be kicked in and to beef it up a little is cost very little.
Last Line Of Defense I’ve had neighbors come up to my windows and try to look in. I pulled up to my house and people had their faces in my windows. I speak to no one, I aw know no one, I have no trespassing signs up, I don’t work( retired early in life lol) and people want to be in my business
Last Line Of Defense I’ve also had people walk up to go in my backyard, got to the point I had to put a 7ft tall privacy fence up and block 2 gates so people can’t walk right in. I think it bothers them bc I don’t work, own my house and associating no one. I’m the quiet guy on the block, the man of mystery
Battery poweres glass break sensors are cheap and easy to apply, put them on your ground floor windows/glass doors and they can keep people from breaking in or scare them off if they try to.
Wireless can kinda suck on graphics since it’s wireless so if your internet sucks or it don’t reach well your quality is blurry and not HD, internet. Now wired one can still run on internet from the box and can also be watch from a app on your phone on live mode. But if you want to look back only on the recover. So I would recommend wired. But yes running cables can be lame but it’s worth it for better quality HD.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your insight! Will definitely be changing a few things. Like the garage door opener, was something I didn't fully think through prior to this.
My home is pretty secure, blow torch attached to each main and side door door knob, the paint cans armed for motion sensing by the staircase and of course the nice arrangement of ornaments scatters by each window sill and sliding patio door. Thinking maybe of adding some micro machines scattered in the kitchen just in case....
A great way to protect your garage if you do have your opener in a vehicle or your vehicle itself is programmed to open it, unplug your garage door opener.
Can you do a video on or talk about in video the logistical side of overlanding. How to find trails and camping sites. The permits required. How to plan large groups. What is legal to explore what off limits and how know the difference? My wife and I are new to this “overland scene” and are looking for good resources to aid us in our adventures. Thanks!
Mike, i posted a comment yesterday in support of your carry at home suggestion. It's not there anymore. Since I highly doubt you sensored it, I think that RUclips may have sensored it. I suppose it's possible that I did something wrong and didn't hit enter after I wrote it... I didn't say anything bombastic or controversial, just that I was glad to hear I'm not the only one that carries at home, and that it really came down to having a comfortable holster and carry method. Wow, if they censored that, they must have a lot of time on their hands. Do you see this happen a lot? Keep up the great content, I really enjoy your channel and laidback delivery.
Interesting - I didn't delete it, and i think the only comments that really get spam filtered are those with racial/homophobic words (not exactly sure how youtube decides to censor comments).
I definitely would like to see some more self sufficient/homesteading ideas. Especially for smaller properties. Rules for small gardens, owning livestock in a residential setting. Make even some ways to ensure you have access to your own emergency water supply, including what is and is not considered legal for most areas. I have also noticed that more and more people are installing emergency bunkers and safe rooms on their properties. Unfortunately, there are many who are willing to take people’s money, only to leave them with a substandard bunker, or even worse, no bunker at all! Anyways, thanks for the tips! 👍🏻
If you have a newer Liftmaster garage door opener most of them are WiFi enabled and can use the app to open and close instead of a clicker in your vehicle.
I think the motion-sensor lights are really effective for not too much money. If someone is walking up your driveway at night nervous and about to do something stupid, the moment a light starts shining on them they're likely going to turn around and go to a different house. They aren't going to take the time to look and see if it was a motion-sensor light or someone that heard/saw something and turned on a light to check it out. By that point, they're probably gone.
FYI I've got a ring doorbell and a HAAS IO system. As soon as someone walks in front of the door all my Google Homes announce "someone is at the front door". If someone rings it Google will say " someone is running the doorbell". I also get texts and ring notifications. I also make sure it's audible from the front door so people know they have been noticed by something
ill be doing a video this week on my channel.. last week i had someone break into my cars and stole one of my cars @ 5am when we were all sleeping.. crazy times. and people are going to start getting desperate..
Ring is great, the advantages are better than then the disadvantages. Just a quick note regarding the hacking of your Ring doorbell. One has to think about not just the system that is compromised but how everything is connected. A lot of people have the attitude "so what if they hack my camera, its just a video feed of my front door what consequence is that?" There are skilled actors out there that can move laterally in your home network from that compromised account. Credentials or personal data stolen from your laptop or PC. The August branded smart deadbolts use wifi and that has the power to just unlock your door. Honestly you're right though, I mean who is special enought to go through all that trouble and what are the odds. I think its important to note though that you shouldn't just brush off cyber security in your personal life. Anyways, love the video man, didn't know that about the longer screws in the door jamb, def gotta upgrade those. Keep up the great work and I hope you and the family are doing well. Would love to see a Cyber Security video, maybe consult with some one in the field, go over password managers and home wifi.
Oh yeah I don't at all brush off cyber security - my entire life is on the internet. I brush off random joe shmoes saying they won't get a ring doorbell (or some other equivalent) because someone will hack it.
I have smart light systems set to alarms, so lights in certain rooms will turn on and off at certain times when I'm not home and I can control them from my phone.
Wireless cameras are great because they can be placed anywhere, but I always think about how useless they would be if your WiFi goes out... with most wired cameras you can still record or view locally if your WiFi goes out. Yes the power could negate all of it, but most people like you run at least some solar or a generator that could keep a wired system running. Anything is better than nothing though.
Additional comment about placing firearms for access around your home. ***** Make sure they are secure!! ****** Whether it be from children or a home invader. A gun left in a drawer in your entry way is a great way to arm a previously unarmed intruder. RFID locks are relatively cheap and are one way of securing an enclosed space while adding minimal delays to approved access.
I want to also have a gas release system close to the door so I can release gas to temporarily incapacitate them. I also want to have a trap room that looks like an entrance to the house but is not. It will have a door that recoils and closes. The real entrance will not be clearly visible.
Hey brother loved the video and have a few of those implemented at my house. I do want to get that ring doorbell though. Also i'm so excited to get the holster i ordered from you back on aug 24. Can't wait to see how the p365xl conceals with the associate v2 holster. Keep up the good work man! I appreciate you!
install Hing Security Pins and, if you are willing to spend some time; re-pin & threat your lock cores. Also, put a small zip tie on garage door emergency releases. Never forget that security only buys time... nothing is impenetrable.
I clip my garage door opener to my lunch bag. That forces me to take it in the house when I get home. One the weekends, I obviously have to remember. I leave it next to where I keep my wallet in my car though, so its easy to grab when I get home.
Yes your Ring doorbell can be hacked. No it has nothing to do with being an important person. It is a simple scan to find vulnerable devices and then using them as a pivot into your home network. Easy fix is to create a VLAN and place all your IOT items in their. Most routers are capable of this. It keeps the same functionality and ease of use while, most importantly, keeping your data safe!
Here's a tip. Install a security system that when a stranger gets into your house in any way its activates and starts up a supercharged v8 in your garage that'll alert everyone in your neighbor hood 😀
People think I’m paranoid! Unfortunately my house was broken in to while I was at home had the 12g waiting on him! Thank God my father taught me to never let my guard down!
Hey Mike, Curious, lets say a home gets broken into, and sometime because of that home invasion scare the family decides to move to a whole new town our city, or even state, would a break in be more likely to happen again because of the move? And let's say the same family never decided to move after a break in, would it be more likely that their house would never be broken into again? But in the first scenario, because of the move, they pretty much started all over so the likelihood reset, I hope the statistics of these scenarios are coming across of how i meant it to be
Do you recommend painting or hiding cameras so they’re not obvious, I get the deterrent factor but the visible cameras may also embolden them by thinking why does he have cameras- thanks
you can also install your doors to swing OUT instead of in. Makes it much harder to gain entry especially if the intruder does not know. instead of just needed to defeat the little metal part, they need to rip the entire trim backstop out which if secured with 3" screws would make the juice not worth the squeeze for a criminal.
Before you get to far on a chicken coop. Check out having a mobile chicken tractor. Saves on feed cost and greatly reduces the smell. +firtilizes your yard
Keep in mind that Ring has had a series of security incidents, most of which involved people using simple passwords that have been compromised previously in other data breaches. Use a strong password and dont repeat it and you should be safe for these types of devices.

You should check out security hinges, or hinge pins for an easy retrofit
Wireless can kinda suck on graphics since it’s wireless so if your internet sucks or it don’t reach well your quality is blurry and not HD, internet. Now wired one can still run on internet from the box and can also be watch from a app on your phone on live mode. But if you want to look back only on the recover. So I would recommend wired. But yes running cables can be lame but it’s worth it for better quality HD.
I definitely want to see the chicken coupe! My wife and I were just talking about building one
Great video. Tons of things to think about.
Thanks!
Do you have any good options for non-lethal self defense items?
Your right, the dog really work! Good job.
Tis often the case
FYI I've got a ring doorbell and a HAAS IO system. As soon as someone walks in front of the door all my Google Homes announce "someone is at the front door". If someone rings it Google will say " someone is running the doorbell". I also get texts and ring notifications. I also make sure it's audible from the front door so people know they have been noticed by something
Neighbor left his garage door open with his car parked in it. Someone stole his car in broad daylight while he was home
Great video. Always enjoy your content. I have been following for a while. I remember your Tacoma inspired me to buy one. Thanks bud. Keep at it.
ill be doing a video this week on my channel.. last week i had someone break into my cars and stole one of my cars @ 5am when we were all sleeping.. crazy times. and people are going to start getting desperate..
I really enjoyed this video. Great content and very helpful. Thanks.
Better Homes and Gardens, LLOD edition. I'd subscribe.
Great info and perspective, thank you!
Any window and door should always be locked unless someone is in the immediate vicinity.
I have that same beanie. Definitely my favorite. As a suggestion for a budget friendly WiFi cam and sensors, look into Wyze.
Great job as always!
Found the locksport enthusiast. Good tips though.
Another good video and thanks. Be well!
I clip my garage door opener to my lunch bag. That forces me to take it in the house when I get home. One the weekends, I obviously have to remember. I leave it next to where I keep my wallet in my car though, so its easy to grab when I get home.
Blink cameras are awesome
Yes your Ring doorbell can be hacked. No it has nothing to do with being an important person. It is a simple scan to find vulnerable devices and then using them as a pivot into your home network. Easy fix is to create a VLAN and place all your IOT items in their. Most routers are capable of this. It keeps the same functionality and ease of use while, most importantly, keeping your data safe!
Who else here became first time chicken owners in the last 2 months 🤣👋
Here's a tip. Install a security system that when a stranger gets into your house in any way its activates and starts up a supercharged v8 in your garage that'll alert everyone in your neighbor hood 😀
Dogs indeed are way more practical and useful than cats
My Tamaskan is an excellent guard dog
Moto Trooper my cat is a quiet assassin
yes carry even inside your house. even bathroom. always within arm's reach.
Also makes it much easier to get locked in your home
@@LastLineOfDefense you would still have windows you can get out of.
would love some self sufficient content. That is on my to do get started list.
Hell yes put it all on your channel.
Keep up the great work and stay safe man👍
Before you get to far on a chicken coop. Check out having a mobile chicken tractor. Saves on feed cost and greatly reduces the smell. +firtilizes your yard
I get a million inches of snow, mobile coop/run is unfortunately out of the question
One of the MANY reasons dogs are better than cats. lol love the videos man, Keep it up!
In Houston murders are up by 35% and burglaries are up 30%. In New York both those numbers are ~55%. Most other crimes are down in those cities.
Mike quick question. What do you think about French style doors. What would be a good way to secure the double door. Just curious of your thoughts
In another video you mentioned installing more solar on the roof of your house. I would like to see a video for that when you do it.
Good stuff 👏, I already follow alot of this but picked up so new Ideas
This is all great information. Thanks
Keep in mind that Ring has had a series of security incidents, most of which involved people using simple passwords that have been compromised previously in other data breaches. Use a strong password and dont repeat it and you should be safe for these types of devices.
Also enabling 2 factor authentication is a big help.
Dude I just did this! I also installed Some small barricade for my doors in my house
🤔 what if I wrap my home in Multicam 🤔 🤔 they can’t invade what they can’t see 🤨🤨
Sweet, some good tips I can use for my barn. Thanks:)
Harden your bedroom door! I once woke up in bed to burglar in my bedroom.
Rune Nation T. Ian has great training.
I was wondering if you are going to do bigger sizes for your merchandise. I was really interested in a few things but you only go to 2x
