Love most of his works. Favorite director has changed though. And love Dancer in the Dark despite it being just a gut punch. And Melancholia and Dogville are in my favorite films those are his two best in my eyes. But yeah great ranking! Hope you’re doing well and staying safe!
@@ChadSabourin It looks great! I've been going through Cobra Kai recently and haven't had much time for film. And as of now I don't know who it is at the moment. I enjoyed your ranking & descriptions. I do agree with your #1- Dogville is just so good & improves with time & rewatching. Have you watched Kingdom, Von Trier's series? Stephen King loved it so much, he brought an adaptation to American TV- Kingdom Hospital. Fun viewing, if you're in the mood. Von Trier explores the concept of Swedenborgian Space, among other things!

I wholeheartedly agree. His best work was the one time he worked for TV (or 3 times now with the new season) He certainly hasn't done anything that is as entertaining as The Kingdom. Some scares, some mystery and some true LOL moments.
I haven’t seen enough of his earlier stuff but from what I’ve seen 1. Dancer in the Dark 2. Antichrist 3. Dogville 4. Melancholia 5. The House that Jack Built 6. Nympho 1&2 I love Dancer and Antichrist equally but I’m a huge fan of Björk’s music so it pushed it to 1. I want to like The House that Jack Built more. I love Matt Dillon’s performance and I find it hilarious in the darkest way possible but just the pretentiousness throws me off. I love a lot of pretentious films though so idk why I can’t just get over it.
I totally get that! I like The House that Jack Built but the self referential scenes of showcasing his films that he made in the past definitely was kind of pretentious, haha.
@@ChadSabourin If I remember correctly, that scene in the house that jack built that you are referring to, was dealing with violence and man's cruelty throughout history, and how it is portrayed in the media and in entertainment, he was showing videos of the third Reich and other images representing human being's capacity for violence and evil, and that is when he showed that very short clip from Antichrist,it was only a few seconds. He was acknowledging the criticism against him and maybe even telling the viewer that he himself has even struggled a bit with the possibility that he might be contributing to the glorification of violence in our culture. It was meta,he was telling the audience that he has his own reservations about the value and implications of his own work. That is just how I interpreted that scene.
in fact, the Melancholia is the film that specifically should have a slow pacing. You know why? Cuz Depression is slow Cuz Nihilism is slow Cuz when you understand the truth and the nature of human being and this world, everything becomes slow. Because when nothing matters, it's slow. I don't expect to anyone understand it, you have to be in that position like me to understand it. People like to consider the pacing of this movie as a con, but they are wrong; it's not a con, issue or whatever.
What you say is true, Lars has suffered from very severe clinical depression for most of his adult life and that is what the main character in melancholia is suffering with, along with many other things. When you suffer from depression, the whole world feels like it's in slow motion, five minutes can feel like forever, it's your identity and it is also what is killing you. I guess that's why he named the planet after a word that used to be used for depression. I am not sure if I liked the fact that he named the planet Melancholia,it seemed a little too spot on,an obvious metaphor that was kind of beneath Lars' genius, but whatever. It's not one of my favorites from him, but it's still a very interesting movie.
In my opinion Dogville is almost the same as Mandarlay, stylistically, just a different story, both movies not getting to the rank of a real movie. Extremely low budget, extremely low in any scenography, etc. You can't compare these two movies to something like Melancholia or Dancer. It's like comparing Eraserhead to Mulholland Drive. Two different worlds. Another thing is that, in my opinion, movies should not be judged when watched many years later. Element of crime is, I would say, a very good and original movie but I wouldn't be blown away today, I don't want to see it again now, but 20 years ago ... it was something. Incredible, awesome, fantastic, it made a huge impression on me, great movie. Jack, Antichrist and Nymphomaniac, I'm not surprised that you have them so high, these are some of the latest movies. Newest movies are always kindoff better than the old ones. It's hard to compare them to the older ones. To wrap it up, in my opinion, by watching them when they came out, I'd say that no. one is Dancer, two is Waves, three is Melancholia, four is Dogville and Manderlaine both equally great, five is Element of Crime.

The idiots are filmed the way it is because its a dogme film, a Danish concept developed by Trier, winterberg and two other danish instructors where you have to follow a strict set of rules, you cant add scenography to the movie, it has to be filmed on location, the camera has to be handheld, no filters and no added sound and a lot of other stuff.
