Completely agree. I just got a Sawyer about six months ago and went immediately to the CNOC bags, which provide a much more robust and flexible bag. I carry two bags, color-coded for untreated (orange) and treated (blue). You can squeeze from the orange bag into the blue one and have a reserve bladder to take back to your campsite. I used this system in the Winds earlier this month and it worked out well. When hiking, the bags roll up and stow away very light and small.

Stoked for your first thru-hike! The Tahoe Rim Trail is high on my list. I feel like I learn something new on every trip I go on, no matter how many miles I've hiked in the past. The Sawyer bags SUCK!! I love my Sawyer Squeeze, but I had to stop using the bags. I use the CNOC Outdoors 2L Vecto bag and have had no regrets. I also love the wide mouth opening on the bag too which makes it way easier to collect water too. Yay for trail magic!!

Last week my friend and I were camping, comparing gear as one does, specifically comparing water filters. I have a LifeStraw collapsible bottle and he had some $350 filter. I've used mine all summer, his was on it's trial run. That night, my bottle got a hole (I have duct tape yet totally didn't think to use it). His filter stopped working for some unknown reason. Totally feeling your water pain.

I kept my overall weight down by having drop boxes at the major road intersections of the trail. like 50 over by Spooner, 207 on Kingsbury, 89 Luther pass, US Hwy 50 by little Norway, near lake Audrain. Baker Pass on the west side. North Shore Blvd. those 6 drops, took time to set however it let us eat well without carrying to much extra weight. had a great time looking forward to sprig 2021, my 5th thru-hike. granted I'm an old man now but I still don't see it as cheating. lol

    • @jackmaloney2335

That was a well produced video Arielle. Nice. Sawyer bladders are notoriously unreliable. (Platypus is a brand BTW, better to just say "bladder.") I second the CNOC Vecto suggestion. The orange version is usually used for unfiltered water. Pair it with your Sawyer and carry a few Smart or Essentia bottles. There's one thing I am curious about. With that huge amount of gear, I would think they would know all about ultra-light stuff, and be able to get base weight down to at least under 15-18 pounds....
