- It was wonderful to experience a relaxing Japanese head spa service at 81+1 in Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵 I really should have done this at the beginning of our trip since the treatment is an awesome jetlag buster!
81+1 has been open for four years and is the vision of founder Daichi Ishihara. A native of Japan but based in New York where he has 3 shops, Daichi wanted to take home a little of his NYC style. His shops include 2 hair & nail salons and 1 restaurant.
His interest in interior design and passion for the haircare profession helped create 81+1’s feel of an inviting artist’s gallery. Three floors and one basement, each one with a different interior style, and each one a private room for the customer's experience 🪴
Typically the head spa is done in the basement room where the environment is darker and illuminated by soft lighting, however we needed more natural light for filming so were in the 3rd-floor room. It is also normal in Japan for staff to wear a mask when providing this service, but for filming purposes, we opted not to.
81+1 strives to provide all customers with the best in Japanese hospitality.
It was a pleasure to meet and film with Ms. Miyuki who has 15 years of experience as a massage therapist. She trained in Tokyo where she learned about shiatsu, reflexology, aromatherapy oil massage, head massage, body structure, muscles, lymph nodes, and pressure points. Ms. Miyuki is passionate about her work!

No detail goes unnoticed for a calm and relaxing experience! Along with being covered with a blanket, small scented and warm beanbags are placed around you to keep you warm and relaxed.
Also, the scents in the rooms change with the season and weather 🍁🌸🌷 Often they are wood-based scents such as Horwood, cypress, frankincense, and rosemary.
The head spa service is a scalp cleansing and massage treatment. The scalp cleansing removes sebum and dirt buildup from the pores, while the massage stimulates the scalp improving blood circulation, promoting healthy hair growth, and relaxing the client.
Pressure points on the head are worked to relieve eye strain, fatigue, and promote sleep 😴 Ms. Miyuki described the head spa at 81+1 as a combined hair care, scalp care, and wellness service.
Ms. Miyuki explains, “I would like to guide you with deep meditation, your brain to rest, and for you to feel comfortable and happy."
✨ All of the essential oils, shampoo, and treatments used at 81+1 for the head spa are natural and free from chemicals.

I'm curious...do you learn to speak the languages in the countries you visit or do you use an interpreter?
Hi Joe, I studied 3 languages in college, but am so rusty with them that it is difficult to communicate to the level we need for filming! Japanese was not one of those languages 😊 In Japan, we had a lot of help from a few interpreters as a few of the barbers did not speak any English, and because we always do an interview with the barbers so needed a more advanced level of comprehension. Generally it is a combination of finding a common language, hand gestures, google translate, and an interpreter.
Cool. Just an idea, if you haven't already done this, would be a behind the scenes compilation of what it takes to make your videos. I haven't watched them all yet so maybe you've already got one out there...in which case I have some catching up to do 😁
Yes, that idea would be a great future video. We’ll see if we can make it happen ... we are normally so busy when filming, but we’ll see for down the road. 🙏🏼

I think spa videos or massage are nice touches to add to your channel. I know with your others it takes time to grow out hair so you can’t do them as regularly lol but throwing sessions like this in between would be fantastic to the lineup!
