the haunting atmosFEAR that surrounds this game might be in part to the camera controls. much like in the early resident evil games the camera limits what the player can see and can focus on disturbing objects even without the player being right up against it. this allows a slow build up to certain in game moments and also opens the opportunity for things to move in the shadows just out of view. p.s. i loved the video
I briefly addressed that in the first room with the Heffalump, but you hit the nail on the head. This game is very much a children's Resident Evil, now that I think about it.
Interesting fact, there’s a teaser trailer that was made for this game long ago when it came out. Basically it took place in a particularly spooky environment (Likely either Owl or Eeyore’s dreams) and featured Piglet tiptoeing around scared out of his wits. Eventually we see him backed into a corner with the shadow of a Heffalump closing in on him. Piglet pulls a brave face, frightening the Heffalump (who had a really creepy early design). It cuts to black before we see Piglet alone again in a dark room shaking with fear. He asks if the Heffalump is back, as a multitude of glaring eyes stare at him in the dark. I remember seeing it somewhere but don’t know what happened to it. If anyone could find it that’d be great!
@GhabulousGhoti at least Luigi's Mansion used the creepiness in every part of its marketing. If you look at the box cover of Piglet's Big Game, you'd never suspect a thing.
@@CaitCherValid, though like I said in the video I don't personally mind the surprise - if anything I think catching you off guard with the horror adds to the feeling of being Piglet :P
Watching this video multiple times over the last week has really helped me fully understand the details that Ghoti brings up, and I have a newfound appreciation for this game that, as a kid, either put me to sleep through boredom or kept me up at night through fear. And through the arguments they present - I've actually found another detail that makes this game truly a gift, complete with tied-up bow. Towards the end, Ghoti mentions that the final boss is absurdly easy - ESPECIALLY in comparison to the segment of gameplay you just had to race through to get there - and expressed their disappointment in it being the final boss. HOWEVER, I argue that this detail is actually not only really nice, but also really clever. Not just through cutscenes and dialogue, but now through the combat mechanic itself, that you've been using since the beginning, the game *reinforces* to the player Piglet's progression in overcoming his fear AND as both a character and a protagonist - by making the final boss *not literally, but technically* one of the easiest encounters in the game. And that's immediately followed up by the big bad running away in fear, the supporting cast cheering him on in celebration, and Christopher reaffirming to both Piglet - and the player - his character arc. *For a kids game, that is some pretty masterful stuff.*
Damn. I wish I had noticed that myself. You have the makings of a game analyst, and that analysis is ingenious. I love this game so much and I don't think I ever really appreciated it as a kid either.
I really wasn’t expecting such a detailed review on the game design of a random kids game. Well done. This sort of long form review is something I wish was more common on RUclips. Also, as a linguistics minor, your channel name gave me a very hearty and unexpected laugh, so thanks for that.
I'm glad you enjoyed! Part of why I chose this game was because it's so obscure and I thought it deserved better, and partially because it has less competition on RUclips :P
I remember this game having such a unique and eerie atmosphere as a kid. Especially Owl's Library. Walking through that area when it was empty was so... unnervingly quiet. Just the dark green lighting and the way those bookshelves extend downwards seemingly forever, it's always stuck with me. Also those crazy faces Piglet makes at the enemies are honestly scarier than the enemies themselves. I honestly think this game may be responsible for my taste in quiet and eerie yet strangely peaceful and relaxing games like Thief and Hollow Knight later in life. High praise for a licensed Winnie the Pooh game to be sure.
In a way (more like dog biscuits). I'd love to cover No100F in an analysis of its own one day, but for now, I think I've had plenty of that game on my channel :P
The play through you did of Piglet’s Big Game is what made me first discover your channel! The commentary you’ve given about this game is great and really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it with this review. I too have had my share of fears with the enemies and memories of solving the puzzles that this game has. After watching this, I’m now rewatching the play through and still really enjoy hearing all the reactions from each level. This was an excellent review and I can’t wait to see what the next one will be! Keep up the great work!
It sucks that I couldn't see this live and I saw that I was expected, so I'm sorry about that. But I got to say that this was really interesting to watch. I never played nor seen your LP on the game, so to see a game like this was really surprising. The combat sections are scary for what is supposed to be a kids game, thought the scariest part of the video was your lightning sound in your intro XD I jumped and got spooped. This game is actually really unique, and oddly disturbing. I wish it was a part of my childhood XP It would fit right in. I already see a slight, but visible boost in quality from the last GhotiBowl. These are always fun to watch and I like the idea of having these live from now on, since it shows more interaction with your viewers. Hopefully I can actually be there next time. Great video, now time to watch a certain LP of a fearless pig bringing about the destruction of the world...
Piglet's faces are the most disturbing part IMO, but the whole atmosphere is very unsettling for a kid's game. Glad you enjoyed the video! Ideally, every GhotiBowl will be better than the last. As for that LP... It's pretty rough. It was my first non-group project post-hiatus, and it really shows. Lots of periods of downtime, lots of bad editing, etc. It's watchable, but it feels like one of my first projects.

This is a great analysis and review of Piglet's Big Game, one of my favorite childhood games. You pretty much hit on everything I thought about when I replayed the game. It's funny how you said to be careful when letting young children play this game unless you really want to traumatize them. When I was replaying the game, I thought how one day, I'm going to show my future kids this masterpiece! I'll probably have to play this with them just to make sure they don't get scared. I just want to show a future generation a well-made game from a golden age of gaming, during a time before many licensed games moved on to mobile devices filled with microtransactions. I actually didn't get scared at all with the horrors in this game when I was a kid. In fact, my favorite level was Eyore's Dream! I had a fascination with creepy levels in games, which is why I loved Luigi's Manson. I also watched Courage the Cowardly Dog back then so maybe that explains why I was so immune to the terrors of Piglet's Big Game! I wondered what the higher-ups at Disney were thinking when they looked at the game and gave the devs the ok. I wonder if the game was originally going to be even scarier and the bosses at Disney told them to dumb it down a bit to be more appropriate for their intended audience. It reminds of how Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode was originally going to be T-rated with edgy humor. When the higher-ups saw it was not appropriate for kids, they changed it. Just wonder if the same happened with Piglet's Big Game. Was it going to be T-Rated? I would have loved that game! Anyway, great work with this professional video! Your channel deserves more subscribers! And you certainly earned my sub!
Thank you for your kind words! It really is a shame to see licensed games are dying out as a medium, but the golden age of them has long since passed :( I doubt this game was going to be T-rated ever, and something tells me the higher-ups at Disney never actually saw this game :P I was way too scared of Luigi's Mansion as a kid, but I eventually managed to best it. I've actually done three LPs of the game so far (an NTSC Perfect Score run, a Rank H run, and a PAL Perfect Score run), so it's safe to say I eventually got over my fears :P Thank you again for your support, and I hope you continue to enjoy my content going forwards!
I've enjoyed all of your Pig Big content ever since you put out that let's play. I also have somewhat of an unusual fixation on this game, having completed it at least 20 times. So, I appreciate all that you have done for this very small community. Anyways, for fun, I one day decided to give names to each of the brave faces. Question: If you run away from a tuba heffalump as he chases you until he stops, does he walk back to where he originally was before falling asleep again?
Hi, great video! Just looking for a review because I found about the ost (the foreboding tracks), I couldnt believe such a "childish" game had that kind of music, and surpisingly, now it makes sense xD So much weird and experimental games were made in the ps2 era tbh.
Finally got around to watching this video. Since the poll is down, yup the game traumatized me. Reawakened my fear of Heffalumps and Woozles. Absolutely hated that part of the very blustery day when I was a kid. Even cried when I reached the Heffalumps and Woozles room in the Winnie the Pooh Disney world ride. But I digress. I could never get past the first room of basic Heffalumps in Pooh's and Roo's dreams because of how scary they were. Played the game again years later and thought it was too easy and quit halfway through Roo's dream before the bees were introduced. But I might just play it again in the future now.
It's well worth a playthrough. One day, Katie and I would love to redo our LP of it, since it doesn't hold up at all and we both feel like we could do way better with it.
i played this when i was younger, but it didn't really frighten me. probable because i grew up around my mom playing resident evil, fatal frame, and clock tower 3.
Yeah the tone is not like a Winnie the Pooh movie, but I think that’s the point. It has dark and scary themes because it’s from Piglets point of view who is scared of everything so the horror themes work to its advantage given who the game is about. I played the GBA version of this game in second grade and it did give me nightmares. Mainly the battle music and Piglets brave faces. I stopped playing it cuz one of his faces scared me so much that turned the game off and never played it again since. Then again I was 7 and I’m 24 now but still... the game is disturbing and I’m surprised they got away with the stuff they put in it
Lol, that's exactly the point I make in this analysis! This game does such a great job making you feel like Piglet, it's absolutely genius. And yeah, I'm pretty surprised they got away with this too. For a game aimed at young children, it's pretty intense!
This game re-used the engine from "Winnie the Pooh's Rumbly Tumbly Adventure", similar to how the SpongeBob Movie Game re-used the BFBB engine. I recommend checking that game out as well.
We've played it actually. IIRC I briefly mentioned it at the end of this review. Much like the Movie Game I found it to be underwhelming, just can't hold up to its predecessor.
@@GhabulousGhoti I understand where you're coming from. It felt more limited despite adding more gameplay variety. It just recycled the same overworld for each level. It's not bad but just not as good as it's predecessor. Also I think it's kinda funny that they also did Tigger's Honey Hunt on PS1/N64 to coincide with the Tigger Movie.
Glad you enjoyed! As I said in this video, I'd put this game right up there with Battle for Bikini Bottom, and that's often considered the pinnacle of licensed games.
12:04 - Fleur-de-lis, a heraldic symbol used, most notably in France. What kid would know that though, I don’t know (I’m a history student, hence why I know) 😂 know I am very late to this, but appreciate this video, as this game gave me nightmares as a kid! Looking back now, the enemy encounters are pretty simple, but just the music and design meant I rarely got past the first couple of levels. And it has obviously been many years since I played it, but I vaguely remember having more problems with the woozels than the heffalumps? I want to say it is because I thought we had to sneak past woozels or something when we first see them in Roo’s dream (the fact I remember that, shows how traumatised I was), but that may just be a young me being confused 😅 I guess it must have been as Tigger?
Glad you enjoyed! As far as I know Basic Heffalumps and Woozles are identical in terms of abilities, but that strong sense of atmosphere still carries it far.
Huh, interesting. I've actually heard other people say it was only in the GCN version but I never bothered to check that myself. It never happened to me as a kid so I just kinda took their word for it.
I remember when I got the game. I never got past roo world and I didn’t know I had to collect all the brace faces. Also the door did kinda scare me when I was younger Still when I play this game now. It is kinda creepy especially for a Winnie the Pooh game. But I still recommend it. If your a Winnie the Pooh fan. I will probably give the game a 7/10
I think what makes it so creepy is that this IS a Winnie the Pooh game. Had it had monsters and stuff right there on the front of the box, I don't think it would feel so strange and out of place like that.
The GBA version was one of the first handheld games I ever played actually, and while it's not nearly as creepy or detailed, it's still really good. The final level is an actual level too, and the "enemy rush" isn't nearly as problematic as the console versions.
The A button glitch is real, I was literally just playing through the game again and in roo’s dream when fighting the vampire woozles it happened to me, I’m using a real disk on a wii so it wasn’t an emulation glitch
Wait, it happened to you vs. the Vampire Woozles? You mean to say that there was even a graphic for the A Button in the sequence then? If that's the case, could you provide some kind of picture? That's actually entirely different than the A Button Glitch I was talking about in this video.
Also trying not defend the other reviewer to much, he said at the beginning of the video that he played it when he was younger which means that it could have reseaved some damage over the years like my version of the game has a couple little starches on it and occasionally the game will crash or not play a brave face cutscene resulting in not being able to progress but that's all I'm going to say to kind of back him up but though.
Oh yeah that guy was an old fan of sml that ranted about how sml sucks now...or then when he made content. He never really got better after that first review
GG: Why is the title screen just Piglet's ass? ME: That's nothing. Imagine being a little kid in 2003 and wanting to see "Piglet's Big Movie" in theaters. Honestly its very.. "off" that you talk so much about the youtuber you disagreed with and claim you don't want anyone harassing him, yet use footage of him that anyone could easily recognize. You had to have known blurring his face wasn't gonna do anything. Then you go on to say it would be easy to find him anyway. If you really didn't want anyone to go bother him you shouldn't have included any footage of his video at all, it wasn't even necessary.
I think you've completely misinterpreted my intent. I don't particularly care if he's easy to find - in fact, I think it's healthy for people to see for themselves and form their own opinion on his video as well. I just said that I didn't want them to harrass him, which to my knowledge no one has. Blurring his face wasn't to make his video unrecognizable, it was just to not have someone else's face in my video without their permission. It's the only other review of the game on RUclips anyway, so it's not like NOT having clips would somehow make it harder to find. Sorry if my intent wasn't clear in this video, but I really meant no harm to him.
Okay, so I'm like 3 minutes into this video, and WHOA you are talking way too fast. Your jokes and talking points are interesting, but I really cant follow most of it.
I'm really sorry! Speaking quickly was a stylistic choice though - I can't stand how slowly most RUclipsrs talk, and I watch every video at x2 speed because of it. You can try slowing down the video to x0.75 speed and see if that makes it easier for you to follow.
@@GhabulousGhoti Fair, but as an editor myself, I'd figured I'd throw it out there. I enjoyed the video otherwise, but I just think some of the jokes especially didn't land due to the fast pace.

I'm glad you enjoyed! Next one should be late May/early June, so keep an eye out!
Question: If you run away from a tuba heffalump as he chases you until he stops, does he walk back to where he originally was before falling asleep again?
He walks back but AFAIK he doesn't go back to sleep after chasing, IIRC he just stands therr.
Hi, great video!
Just looking for a review because I found about the ost (the foreboding tracks), I couldnt believe such a "childish" game had that kind of music, and surpisingly, now it makes sense xD
So much weird and experimental games were made in the ps2 era tbh.
Gaming peaked in the 6th and 7th gens IMO, I live for this weird AF titles :P
Loved the game and excellent video! Especially the part about the steps you take. You start scared but are awesome in the end!
Keep up the great work!
Thanks, glad you've enjoyed!
Ah, I remember this game played it when I was a child. It was terrifying.
That's putting it lightly :P
@@GhabulousGhoti I'll be looking forward to it.
This feels like Disney’s answer to Luigi’s Mansion.
Outside of the spooky theme I don't see too many similarities tbh. Piglet feels to me like more of a Point and Click style game.
i played this when i was younger, but it didn't really frighten me. probable because i grew up around my mom playing resident evil, fatal frame, and clock tower 3.
Ah, that'd do it. You were toughened up at a young age :P
I remember playing Piglet’s Big Game when I was a kid. It was one of my favorites
It's surprisingly good. Really a hidden gem!
Everyone is going nuts over the Winnie the Pooh horror movie. To those of us who have played this game, the movie idea doesn't sound so far-fetched.
Tigger's Honey Hunt is really solid too IMO. I enjoyed that game a lot when I played it.
This game seems surprisingly impressive! Radtastic review.
Glad you enjoyed! As I said in this video, I'd put this game right up there with Battle for Bikini Bottom, and that's often considered the pinnacle of licensed games.
You forgot to mention the final secret boss that you can only beat by kicking
Piglets big game is fucking terrifying
Agreed, and it has no reason to be!
@@GhabulousGhoti I've watched many horror films and none of them can match how utterly terrifying PBG is.
That glitch were piglet falls though the floor happened when I replayed it not that long ago. And it was the ps2 version
Huh, interesting. I've actually heard other people say it was only in the GCN version but I never bothered to check that myself. It never happened to me as a kid so I just kinda took their word for it.
I remember when I got the game. I never got past roo world and I didn’t know I had to collect all the brace faces.
Also the door did kinda scare me when I was younger
Still when I play this game now.
I've never played the GBA version, but I've been curious.
Can we talk about how terrifying this game is, though?
Lol, that's what the entire last third of this video is about :P
I would love to see a remake for this game on modern day consoles
@@mysterymenz99playstation13 Same, though the visuals hold up really well when played in an emulator.
I don't know how I missed this but I'm here after completing the survey.
Lol, no worries. Enjoy!
Are you gonna do a review of the sequel?
Probably not. There's no depth in the sequel to talk about.
My copy's pretty old too, and I still feel like that other reviewer was going out of his way to make this game look worse than it actually is :(
@@GhabulousGhoti yeah I think so too I love this game and I don't want it to be trashed on
So this is the game where the odd eerie Silent Hillesq music came from.
Gosh I want to replay this game now
This game holds up surprisingly well, I hope you enjoy your replay!
Oh yeah, I remember playing this game a lot as a kid.
I played it a few times, but I think I only beat it once IIRC.
I didn't know boats can dream.
Of course they can. How else would we get to the final level?
This and night of 100 frights need their time here on yt and more talking
I know what you mean, they're both kind of overlooked.
When are you going to review the pc version of the game?
I have no plans to right now. In fact, I didn't even know there was a PC version of the game.
How about reviewing Rumbly Tumbly Adventure?
Do you plan on playing THE DOG Island?
I have no immediate plans to since I'm focusing more on videos like this and not gameplay content, but it's not out of the question.
I have a different title screen that what you have, I guess it's a regional thing
Huh, interesting. I was unaware that the title screen varied by region.
Great review! Now do the sequel Pooh's Rumbly Tumbly Adventure!
I don't have anywhere near as much to say about that game, it's not as well thought out IMO :(
Oh yeah that guy was an old fan of sml that ranted about how sml sucks now...or then when he made content.
He never really got better after that first review
Oof
GG: Why is the title screen just Piglet's ass?
ME: That's nothing. Imagine being a little kid in 2003 and wanting to see "Piglet's Big Movie" in theaters. Its the weekend, and your parents take you to see the movie, and right before you head into the theater room playing this movie, you are greated by probably the most unintentionally scary movie poster? images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/615ZFm5mapL._AC_SL1183_.jpg
WTF?
I guess that explains it, but why?
@@GhabulousGhoti I guess someone at Disney thought it'd be funny? Either way I wish they had instead used the UK poster.

Hi how are you doing today 😊😁😀
I'm well, and yourself?
I still remember when my parents bought this game to me when iwas like 5years old :D It really ruined whole winnie the pooh for me XDD But i really love this game now as an adult tho :D
That is understandable. I appreciate the feedback!
0:24 To think, if it wasn't for that garbage review, I wouldn't be watching your videos right now
It's crazy what seemingly unimportant circumstances can have such life changing outcomes.
@@GhabulousGhoti I like how you consider me watching your videos as life changing ☺️
I would hope it is on both ends, I've never had one person make so many memes for me before! :P
@@GhabulousGhoti and I've never seen a RUclipsr give me so much meme material in their videos before
What can I say? I'm definitely not your typical RUclipsr :P
