this movie is really manga accurate and as a fan i love it! The France 2019 version Nicky Larson, is good but Netflix added some lost ingredient from it - the heart touching story, that what made the manga so good. Ryo always hide who and what he is really are with pervy, craziness and comical action, his back story its so dark that this movie just show only a drop of hint about it. If you read the manga the you'll know this is about people whose pasts are very sad and don't want other people to feel that way by helping them

It's incredible how accurate the casts are... the crews are remarkable. The action itself was modernized to fit the nowaday genre where John Wick has painted a new standard, City Hunter did well to explore a new avenue of its own.
The movie was rewritten and made compact comparing to the source, I love it. it's not easy to write the thousand pages of Manga into this 1 short film where the first and later acts got blended pretty well.

Yes, City Hunter has been around as Manga and Anime for a long time.
Most people will probably know the Jackie Chan live-action adaption from 1993, which has that hilarious Street Fighter sequence, with Jackie cosplaying as Chun Li, that has become a meme.
That movie wasn't really faithful to the source material though, this new Netflix version is.
All the raunchy sex jokes, slapstick humor and Ryo being an absolute dumbass & horndog at times, is straight from the Manga/Anime. It's not supposed to be taken too serious and despite all this, Ryo has a heart of gold and is a skilled fighter/marksman/ investigator.
This here is like a sort of prequel to the main series and shows how Ryo and Kaori became partners, after her brother ( Ryo's original partner) died. Kaori is the ''straight man'' or rather ''straight woman'' , who keeps the business going, while Ryo is getting again into his usual shenanigans.
Yes, the main character is the comic relief and butt of many jokes.
So, they pretty much nailed the characters and the crazy, over-the-top action is also spot-on.
In the Manga/Anime you'll see Ryo performing some absolute insane feats of marksmanship.

In Japan, many people in their 30s and older read it in manga form and even more watch it in anime broadcasts. It is a national work in Japan, and many girls fall in love with the main character. Since the work is several decades old, there are many vulgar scenes, and some foreigners may find them repulsive.

I can't say that this is the best manga and cartoon adaptation of all time because I don't control my memory as well as I would like. But this City Hunter is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent adaptations ever made.
He has the merit of having succeeded in capturing the essence of the original work: Saeba Ryô, a private detective, almost uncontrollably obsessed with feminine charms, who has the gift of feeling murderous auras and switching in a fraction of a second, from the most ridiculous lightness to an extreme state in which he demonstrates unrivaled virtuosity with a firearm and even without it; added to this is his very talented collaborator whose main mission is to limit as much as possible the hero's natural tendency to fall into levity.
Well, this film transcribes all of that in a remarkable way: the action scenes are of singular intensity, the acting is all sublime (especially the main actor who even managed to reproduce Ryô's voice quite well in the cartoon), the plot is well chosen and the homage to Ryô's lightness is hilarious. I just regret that we didn't have a small appearance from a certain character from the original work, but it's not a big deal. In any case, what a remarkable success!

The movie did very well in updating the manga and anime from its '80s style sensibilities to the more modern Gen-Z settings with homeless kids staying at net cafes while trying to make it big as viral modeling sensations. It's a relatable take on Japan's current social problems. I do kind of wished that the action is styled more towards John Wick than '90s Hong Kong movies but it's pretty fun overall. Not perfect, but thoroughly enjoyable. Here's hoping for a sequel with more Saeba shenanigans and hopefully Umibozu (the bald former operative guy who runs a cafe in the manga and anime) joining the cast as well.

City Hunter has been around since 1985 and of all the adaptations this is the best one. I think they have actually somewhat softened Ryo up in this version. In the manga his perverse behaviour was far more extreme. Yet at the same time the scenarios are so ridiculous and he constantly gets punished for it. A solid adaptation.

As always, live action don't live up to the anime or manga. If you're expecting an actual faithful adaptation of the manga or the anime series, it's not going to do any justice. The only four thing that does stay faithful to the manga is the drug in question is angel dust (pcp), Ryo is shooting a python, the former cop parter dies and asks him to look after his sister, lastly he drives a red mini.

@@MoviesAndMunchies I'm so sorry chris. That's what I get for being stingy with words. I was asking if the series had subtitles or overdubbed or both. Well I don't hate reading subtitles, sometimes I like to walk around or look on my phone and prefer English over dub is there an option for that with this series?

@@ComedyTragedy12 I'm pretty sure there's an English dub, but I can't speak to how good/bad it is.
For my lighting, I have all sorts going on. My keylight is an iFootage 60DN with a softbox. I also have a raw light bulb on a shelf off to my right and then all sorts of Govee lights in my bookshelf. I like them because they're all controlled by one app, and are customizable with their color. I had been using a Neewer LED RBG CB60 with a softbox for a back/hair light, but I kept hitting my head walking in room, so I took it down for now. I'm never satisfied with my lights, so I'm continuously fiddling with the setup.

@@ComedyTragedy12 There are ways to do effective lighting with just one light... I have a "lantern" softbox also and it can connect to all of my lights through a Bowens mount... and it allows for diffused, but all-around lighting. They're typically not too expensive either, which is always nice!

Personally, Nicky Larson (2018) is the perfect City Hunter live action movie.
This one from netflix is second.
If any of you viewer want to capture the manga, both are my recommendation. Forget the Jackie Chan one, it's a martial arts movie.
    Thanks for the review.
Edit: There are 1 more city hunter movie from Hong Kong, and 1 from Korea. I forgot to mention those. My apology. So the rank goes like this:
    1. Nicky Larson (French) 2018
    2. City Hunter (Netflix-Japan) 2024
    3. Mr. Mumble (Hong Kong) 1990-ish
    4. City Hunter (Hong Kong) 1990-ish
    5. City Hunter (Korea) 2000-ish

I think the biggest difference is really only due to the timeline of the story the two version takes places in.
Netflix version is the origin story which roughly covers the first two volumes of the manga where Ryo and Kaori is only beginning to form their relationship which many people might not even remember anymore, which makes Ryo and Kaori's relationship feels distant (but as it should be since this is at the origin point), whereas the French version feels like an average case you would find Ryo/Kaori trying to solve which would take places somewhere in the middle of the 35 volumes of the manga and thus it feels more familiar. The Netflix version is both a better entry point for newbies as well as a fan letter to old time fans, whereas the French version is more geared towards people who already knows the franchise.

Grew up with the manga even though I did not have the English translation. Loved the art. When I was older, I did see the OVA direct to VHS/dvd anime movies. Personally, not into the crude sexual humor, that seems to be a Japanese culture thing, and it doesn’t age well after the sexual harassment/Me Too movement - cringy. But I did like the mercenary/hired gun aspect of the story, even if I’m not into guns in real life.
I guess the sexual humor worked for you since you gave it a 4? I’m curious how American audience not familiar with Japanese culture will view all this?
