"From Zero...? Like...from nothing? Oh! Your first-" Your first band name. Xero. The band was called Xero before changing their name to Hybrid Theory, and later Linkin Park.
Yup, it's Mike talking to his oldest kid, his son, that is about 14-15. It's cut out on purpose to keep it sort of as an in-joke - if you know LP was first called Xero, you'll get it immediately.
I surprised myself in that good things go is my favorite. Emily's vocals on that are insane and it's just such a beautiful song. One of their all-time best imo.
I'm I crazy for saying that, but that song, like beat along and some back vocals and effects sound like some Travis Scott Rodeo/Astroworld type thing?!? Like dark and moody parts of Rodeo and trippy and angelic of Astroworld
I don't think they cut off the clip in the intro because they were ashamed. I think it was supposed to be a thing where if you know Xero that you'll smile and fill in the rest of your head...so it's just something for fans. Also, I heard it's Mike's daughter.
Cut the Bridge grows on you real fast really quick on repeat listenings lol Good things go is my absolute fav from this album, unexpectedly. Overflow is such a vibe lol
10/10 album for me, absolute bangers the whole way through. Hard to pick a favourite track, it might honestly change depending on my mood, but currently it's Two Faced, with The Emptiness Machine and Good Things Go being close second and third. For me The Emptiness Machine has that extra emotional substance of being THE comeback single. Each time Emily comes on the vocals in that song I get chills, and then that feeling only intensifies when she goes into the chorus for the first time. It's very hard for any other song to give me that kind of a feeling. As for Cut the Bridge, it didn't stand out to me on the first listen either, but after a few listens, I think it's a real banger just like the rest of the album, and I get why it's the favourite track of the album for a lot of people. Casualty was also number one for me for a little while but it's not up there anymore after hearing the whole album. Still a great track imo. Also Over Each Other does a tiny bit of pereparation for Casualty with what Mike says at the very end lol. I feel like almost every single song on the album except maybe for OEO took a place as my favourite for at least a few hours, haha. Obviously we disagree at several points of the album but that's what's bound to happen with music, still enjoyed your reaction
Fair review. I also was a bit jarred by the intro and I was very familiar with the story of "From Zero" having multiple meanings but in the end, doesn't bother me at all anymore. "Cut The Bridge" was also a weird one for me on the first couple listens. I have since grown to not dislike it and I don't skip it but it is still my least favorite. For me, the rest of the album is great, even though I do feel "Casualty" belongs on a different album, I still love it for what it is. 1. IGYEIH (10/10) 2. Over Each Other (10/10) 3. Two Faced (10/10) 4. The Emptiness Machine (10/10) 5. Good Things Go (10/10) 6. Overflow (9.5/10) 7. Heavy Is The Crown (9.0/10) 8. Stained (9.0/10) 9. Casualty (8.5/10) 10. Cut The Bridge (7.5/10)
Honestly the album in general is really good. I always find myself really enjoying Cut The Bridge, Heavy is The Crown and Two Faced; but i have to say, Good Things Go and Overflow are REALLY underrated
I find it funny when people act like In the End and Numb are some kind of revolutionary tracks. Mike constantly talked about it when people panned OML as “pop” when In The End literally defines the era of popular nu metal. To each their own, I think the downside of Linkin Park is that people go in expecting Meteora and then are shocked when it isn’t.
Intro has a kid asking about the name of the album, I assume one of Mike’s kids. And funnily audio cuts when when the kid figures out the history behind album name 😂
My surprise was that my favorite changes based on my mood. And I have a different one playing in my head each day. Also I really dig the wood chopping effects in the cut the bridge one. I call it the beaver song. 😂
I liked your perspective coming from someone who knows LP but doesn’t know their entire catalog. The disjointedness of the album to me is because it is a call back to all their albums. Each song could fit on one of their other albums. But they are also fesh and new. My first listen to Overflow, I felt like you did but having listened to it a few times it is top 2 on the album and does make my top 10 LP list of songs.
Mike loves Hardcore. Casualty is paying homage to that. If you’re not into hardcore/punk you won’t like or understand it. Cracking song and shows they are just doing what they want musically and not sticking to a ‘will the fans like this’ formula.
Overall I thought it was a great comeback album for the band. Mixing some of the classic LP sounds with the new. Emily really showcases her vocals on this album. Mike is doing some different things vocally as well. I would probably place this album third in their discography after Hybrid Theory & Meteora. This will definitely be in my Top 10 music releases this year! Great reaction Drew and good job LP!
The whole album is in tribute to Chester. Every new song has an old part of a Chester song, or a direct reference to him. yes, it's rearranged and brought up a key or two to match her voice. Em's not trying to replace him, she's paying respects.
At first listen, I stood my ground on liking only the singles and Casualty. But then Good Things Go grew on me and I suddenly started loving Mike’s emotional last verse and Em’s high notes during the chorus. That last track is a very good way to send the album off. ❤❤
One thing I noticed during your thoughts was that you liked the songs that were the most Hybrid Theory / A Thousand Suns / MTM, and the ones you didn't like were the ones that sound more like One More Light and The Hunting Party, especially those first two, Cut The Bridge and Casualty, they really remind me of Guilty All The Same and Keys To The Kingdom from THP respectively, and it really feels like they're paying tribute to every era of LP with each song
5:20 I feel you... Before I read the lyrics I was signing "so fucking I am" 😂 According to Mike, they made multiple takes of that long scream in Heavy Is The Crown, but the one you can hear on album is Emily's first take.. quite impressive. Also he said that both, Chester and Emily, could go even longer. And I fully agree with you that last 3 songs are great.. My favourite part of the album 👌🏻
During overflow, you were typing on your keyboard, talking through the lyrics... You actually did that a lot. I couldn’t really rate anything without paying attention... crazy lol.
Also, at the end of overflow you hear a casette being inserted, and a old song plays. The song is actually one of the songs that were on their first ep as Xero (its called Fuse) And IGYEIH are the first letter of the words "I Gave You Everything I Have" (you can hear Emily singing that part on every chorus)
To me this album is an homage of their whole discography while making is fresh and new. My top 5 and the albums they remind me: Two Faced (Hybrid Theory) Cut the Bridge (Minutes to Midnight) Heavy is the Crown (Meteora) Good Things Go (Living Things) The Emptiness Machine (Minutes to Midnight + Hunting Party)
I have to say first listen through I was a little disappointed with the last song. Not because I thought it was a bad song, I just wanted a heavy song to go out on. However having re listened to the album a few more times I realise how wrong I was. It’s a fantastic way to close the album . One of my favourite songs off the album
They captured all of their previous eras + this new one with Emily, in one album. Those familiar with all their discography will hear it. There is literally something for everyone here. A major feat. I love it all. I saw some news that the album hit a UK #1, an iTunes rock #1 & #1 on ARIA top 50 albums chart. ❤
Hi Drew, thanks for the review of LP From Zero. It's amazing that every LP fan can find something for himself. My ranking: Masterpiece - overflow 11/10. Excellent - The Emptiness Machine, Heavy Is The Crown, Two Faced, Good Things Go 10/10, Very Good - IGYEIH, Stained, Cut The Bridge 9/10. Good - Casualty, Over Each Other 8/10. Dislikes - zero !!!!!!!! I love this album. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love that the Emily haters says that LP is Chester's band so they should quit. Here is a newsflash: Mike started the band and it was established. Mike said later said that for the sound they wanted to do his vocal lacked a LOT. They then had auditions with several singers and the rest is history. So it was never Chester's band, he was the last member and only got there by luck. 😂
iGYEHI has a Forty six & two Adam Jones guitar tone as well as that riff before the drum solo, y’all tripping, with the casualty and tool thing it’s definitely in IGYEIH
IGYEIH fully reminds me of a Halestorm song, especially in the chrous haha. I just picture Lzzy Hale belting the shit out of it 😂. But Overflow is very slowly becoming my fave on the album
I'm not sure where the "shame" part of the Xero intro comes from, I've definitely not seen that from Mike talking about it. To me, a quick cut away from someone who finality *gets it* has long been one of my favourite comedic bits in media, so on my first listen I was sent into TEM laughing which was a great feeling!
For me, Casualty is my least favorite, and Overflow is just one step above that (it would be much higher except Mike's iambic flow for about 6 lines or so of it is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears 😅). Beyond that, I can't really rank anything except to say Emptiness Machine and Cut the Bridge are mid-tier, and all the rest are top-tier songs that I love. (Well, Heavy is the Crown toes the line for me between mid and top tiers; I can't fully decide on that one.)
It seems that this album shook up the LP universe, as it brought back a lot of people who had spent the last 20 years ignoring the band to hear what it would be like. Is that a problem? No, it's not at all. Quite the opposite. But I think it would be worth at least doing a little homework and realizing that the band had a history after their two most successful albums. And that among the last five albums they recorded with Chester there are A LOT OF THINGS that are very different from the Nu Metal sound of the early LP. At least to me, it sounds very pretentious to want to have the audacity to review an album by any artist without knowing their previous career.
Wow pretty harsh comment, I actually followed the band from before they were even a band pre Xero days. I enjoy reactions from people who are listening to it fresh. He also stated that he was not an expert LP fan, I have seen reactors say how they loved LP but could not name another member but Chester.
You lost me after your first paragraph. You’re the one sounding pretentious here ironically. I’ve been completely open with my history with the band and I’m judging the album fairly based on how it sounds, not because of what they used to sound like. You’re basically saying that no one should review any album ever unless they know the entire scope of the band in questions’s discography, bad take. Regardless, I’m aware of their sound changing over the years and moving away from Hybrid Theory + Meteora.
@@DrewFortune97 I've been honest with my thoughts. You're the one in the role of music critic here, and I think context is important. We can civilly disagree. You didn't like my opinion, and I didn't like your review. That's okay.
For me, Cut the Bridge is the weakest track. Which is weird because to me it sounds so much, structurally/instrumentally, like a Fall Out Boy song and I love FOB.
I kinda got this was gonna be painful to watch after the intro……… Why are you acting like old lp track has incredible lyrics…… However casualty and igyeih give of massive tool vibes
Personally, the emptiness machine and heavy is the crown are the only songs I’ll be listening to in the future from this album. The rest just feels mid or not LP at all.
@@EnergeticxCheese I don’t mind when bands experiment and try new things I’m not against it. Even my top most beloved bands do/did, sometimes it lands with me sometimes doesn’t. This album for me was mostly a miss but I see the potential in their future releases
Bro LP is all over the place with their sound. They clearly do not want to be put in a box which is why every album is totally different. Quit trying to stuff them in that box when they clearly don’t want to be there. Just enjoy the music
It feels like an album written by the teachers of a music department at a university. No song really flows into the next. The songs feel uncomfortable formulaic (you know, like how you would be taught about music) Also the reason Drew keeps feeling like he's already heard everything before. As if every song was written by a different person because they have different tastes. No feeling of genuine passion. Lyrics that feel like they've been written by AI. Just as if it was something to do for a bit of a laugh. Nothing against Emily, but as a whole it is really a huge miss.
Well if you look into the song writing credits, only Emptiness Machine, Casualty, and Two Faced were solely written by LP. Everything else had extra song writers. I wonder if Warner Records meddled a bit, or if the the boys were just seriously rusty with song writing. Can't deny you can FEEL the influence of others on a lot of this music and only the ones solely written by LP actually feel LP.
But the entire album sounds like LP. So much so that fans are constantly comparing "this one reminds me of Meteora", "this one reminds me of Minutes to Midnight", "this one could be on One More Light", "this one sounds like The Hunting Party" etc. Honestly, you're giving the impression that you listened to the first two albums, skipped 20 years and came back now as if nothing had happened in between. The funny thing is that the LP has been accused since 2007 of not sounding like LP.
@@ArtDadDrawspeople have been saying they “don’t sound like Linkin Park” since Minutes to Midnight released in 2007. I do find it odd you’re saying this though, because most people (myself included) noticed that the entire album is a mix of all the sounds they’ve had over the years, which was likely intentional
to actually sit there eand say there is no passion with how Mike has constantly talked about the creative process for From Zero is completely asinine. to say it's AI generated is such a cop out excuse to insult them as artists as well.
Now that the dust has settled, what’s your favourite track on From Zero ?💿
Favorite non-singles for me have to be Casualty and Good Things Go
-YES
Casualty is my absolute favorite, good things go gives me goosebumps, two faced is hella catchy

I see we’re continuing the tradition of “this new album doesn’t sound like Linkin Park” that started with Minutes to Midnight
@@NightwingTV it’s close but there’s just something off I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe a few more listens
Ok
Stained is like a Katy Perry song with heavy guitars
