I appreciate the frankness of the priest when he says that he can't imagine how God could send people to Hell. Too many people let what they can imagine have veto power over truth. We see this in philosophy: "I can't imagine how I could possibly have free will, so even though I make hundreds of free choices every day, I can only conclude that I'm just blindly directed by the laws of physics." It's a form of pride: the person is so convinced of their own wisdom that they never stop to consider that there might be something that they've overlooked, or that they couldn't understand.

The ignorance of scientific principles in this statement is baffling. How is "free will" determined by physics? Do you even understand what physics is? Please pick up a text book and at least learn some of its basic laws before you make such a ludicrous statement again. The study of the brain is biology/neuro-chemistry, not physics. It is no wonder you believe this clap-trap when the most simple of scientific realities elude you. Here is a philosophical reality for you; you make the claim there is a hell. It is therefore up to you to prove there is one. What people have imagined is not evidence; unless you now think that in courts of law they call on people to refer to what they have dreamed. However a more interesting question is why do you feel so comfortable with the idea of a "loving" creator that actually CREATED a place of eternal torture. Are you unaware that those two things are contradictions? Does a loving parent desire to kill their children if they don't obey them? Hopefully not in your household....

In the same way that Jesus is both human and divine, so God is merciful and just; therefore hell is real. The saints and scripture provide extra confirmation of hell.
Thank you Father for teaching us about the Reality of Hell. I have never in my life heard a homily on this at mass. We need to pray for our Priests because they are offending God and failing their flocks by not preaching this especially in this very Evil point in Salvation History.

Excellent sermon. I wish my priests wasn't scared enough to preach like this. But then again they are such targets in today's society. Please pray for priests. For them to uphold the teachings of the Church and for them not be attacked so much.
Thats a good attitude. It's easy to get frustrated with the lack of preaching on Hell. Priests who fail to preach on it do us a major disservice. But as frustrating and wrong as it is for them not to preach on Hell, I've realized that it's easy for me to demand more fire and brimstone sermons when I don't have to deal with angry and alienated parishioners, when I won't lose major donors to my parish that is wallowing in debt, when I don't serve under a bishop who will transfer me to a run down parish in the middle of nowhere etc. It's a cross that they should have the courage to bear, but we should make sure we are doing everything we can to help them bear it before we berate them.

The argument that the Church has named lots of saints but nobody in Hell is just really asinine. The Church names saints after an investigation and favors are won by them so that we can know that they are 1) A champion of the faith, and a person who's example is worthy of imitation and 2) A powerful intercessor that we may turn to in times of need.
What exactly would be the point of investigating people who led wicked lives and ended up in Hell to confirm that they are indeed in Hell? How would we know definitively on any one particular damned soul? It's not like anyone will be receiving favors from them as a sign of their fate. Besides, the Church would be swamped if they had to investigate every person who had died to make an official declaration on if they were in Heaven, Purgatory or Hell and so often it is left to extraordinary cases.
We already have the assurance from Our Blessed Lord that few would find the narrow gate to be saved and spared of eternal damnation.

I believe that these types of questions come down to one thing.. Pride. "Who is Like Unto God?" Said St Michael the Archangel. We need to Trust in our Lord, Realize our limited human minds cannot ever truly Fathom our Lord. We need to work on in our journey in this world that we are mere creatures of God and we must take things on Faith even if we cannot comprehend things.
We have to become like small children surrendering our will to God's will. Jesus said these very important words in a prayer to his Father during his Passion.
God Bless Everyone and help us all to remain strong in our Faith to live each day in accordance to the will and teachings of God. We should all be praying for this for ourselves and other poor sinners.

Everything that happens happens because it can happen. Anything that doesn’t happen doesn’t happen because it couldn’t. If it could’ve happened, it would’ve happened. If it couldn’t have happened, it wouldn’t have happened. All of reality is dominoes moving in tune with the fundamental laws of necessity, which have always existed by necessity, so therefore there is no free will in the broadest sense of the term. I always was going to type this, and you were always going to read it. This basic obvious rational belief is called “Necessitism ” and EVERYONE, including babies, knows it’s true. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t use statistics to predict which dates will vote Democrat or Republican, or try to predict the weather, or say “if course the billiard ball will move left and not right if you push it to the left”, or use logic at all. Without Necessitism, the fundamental basis for logic is absent. So one of the reasons I left Catholicism is that I learned it dismisses Necessitism.

I was saved all because I watch a sermon about hell and how easy it is to go there. Before that I was living in a delusion that God will never send me to hell because he loves me so much. You have to get infused knowing from God the Holy Ghost. I don't have faith because I read the Bible I have faith because it is supernatural infused knowing into me. I know the Bible is true revelation because it is infused into me to know. Based on what the Bible says itself I can't know one way or another wether or not it is true. Pray the Rosary and to the Holy Spirit to know the things you need to know.

Doesn't the desire to love imply love - or at least, the beginning of love?
I am highly skeptical of the claim the demons or souls in hell desire to love. If love was truly gone, the desire would not exist. Given love in these entities is gone, given total rejection of God who is love, then desire for love would also be gone.
Desire is a neutral feeling, if not a negative feeling in the absence of the thing desired. The absence of love would not destroy the desire for love, but the desire for love is not a necessary precursor to love. There's no reason to think desire would cease to exist.

If you're going to argue that noone goes to hell, you're basically saying that people like Hitler, Stalin and Charles Manson are in heaven, then, unless you're one of those who thinks that the souls of the wicked are "extinguished". The universalist God, to me, sounds just as awful as the one you're complaining about because then morality becomes meaningless, what we do doesn't matter 'cause we're saved anyways. You can go ahead and canonize them, I'm curious how people would react to that.
And if hell is your proof against God's existence, then how does one not immediately become Nietzsche's follower as morality doesn't seem to really exist in nature (if you take out Natural Law). Essentially things like human rights are social constructs as many people argue.
I myself struggle with this doctrine all the time, especially in regards to non-believers, but as the sermon says sometimes I just accept it, because otherwise I should just take the back door and reject Christ altogether, because he was the one who introduced hell to us.

Naturalism Forever, whether there is proof for the immortality of the soul is a question worth exploring. Can you tell me what you mean by "verifiable evidence"? If you mean evidence that we can confirm with the empirical sciences, as in, lab tests and that sort of thing, you won't get it. This is because the soul is not made of matter (the soul is immaterial), and we can only run tests on material things. However, there is-- from Catholics and ancient pagans alike-- extremely strong philosophical evidence as to the immortality of the soul. It is verifiable, yes, but only through human reason and tradition, not through lab tests.
If what you indeed want is empirical evidence, let me throw that back at you. What empirical evidence can you give that the soul is NOT immortal?

Naturalism Forever It is as St Faustina stated in the priests homily. I would highly recommend you listen carefully. St Padre Pio also said to people that refused to believe in hell's existence. "You will believe in hell when you get there."
I think the saddest thing about this philosophy is that there are clearly children listening to this. One day we will look back on this madness with compassion for its foolishness. But that time of greater mercy is not yet here. Thankfully, we don't have to wait for this philosophy to bring it about. It is being done in spite of its efforts to ingrain guilt and self-hate in its members. Imaging a world where we punished the offenders of our societal rules by keeping them alive to torture. Would you want such a society? And before you brush it away by saying it is "god's justice' and therefore not human justice - do you want to believe that the justice of humankind is superior? You will notice too that the priest does not answer the ancient question of WHY a merciful being would act outside of what WE consider unmerciful. We simply repeats, over and over, "He will....he will", hoping to expunge from the minds of the listeners that the notion is philosophically flawed.
