    Wow, I;m was blown away (old guy's terminology) You are the best, young man. Teaching the nature of the tools, separates you from the pack. I just need to practice and watch several times. Then the techniques will be part of my palette for all sorts of stuff. thank you thank you...

    I've been watching Photoshop tutorial videos for a long time and stopped because I wasn't learning much new information. After cruising through some suggested videos I landed on your channel. Your videos are so much more advanced and concept oriented than many of the others I've run into, it's really refreshing to see this level of applied concepts being taught. It builds on the more obscure information I've already required, but it doesn't leave me in the dark on some of the newer stuff. Good Job! Subscription earned. Between PiXimperfect and Phlearn I'm actually learning again!

    This is one of the most concise tutorial on dodge and burning. You are an amazing instructor!!! congratulations!!

  • @GirlWithTheFilmCam
    @GirlWithTheFilmCam 5 лет назад

    First used dodging and burning in film photography class where we had to manually produce our photographs on photo paper. You would take your 35mm film and use the enlarger to expose onto photo sensitive paper in the dark room. During this exposing period you would time out how long it took to create a properly exposed image onto your paper. You could burn in the image longer in some areas versus 'dodging' or simply blocking certain other parts of the image to expose as long. You used another piece of paper or object, like a circle cutout, or whatever you could use to do this. Ansel Adams used this in his photographs. The zone system wasn't just about capturing the dynamic range of light to dark in his photographs, this technique also applied to when exposing the images onto paper. He could lighten some areas and darken others; balancing the image and attracting the eye to other areas of the photo.

    You are unique among your Kind on RUclips. Brillant Stuff.the way you explain these thigs so easy is amazing each tuime. Phhotoshop is sometimes really weirdly built and hard to get for new people. Photography in general with all the terms and settings in digital editing are hella frightening and confusing because so many things lead to the same thing. the way you teah basic color knowledge on the side is just the proverbial cherry on top.
    I sincerly wish i could explain this stuff even to a fraction of your skill-level to people.
    My rRespect

    You're doing some of the best videos in the Photoshop topic on RUclips!
    I just have a theoretical question regarding this technique: Applying a dodge curve and then removing it gradually from the dark regions using Blend-if isn't the same as if you were creating that dodge curve and were pushing back the darker regions of the curve to gradually meet the 45° line?

    Great tut!!! Best one of yours!!! One tip I haven't tried yet but just an idea. I think you should be able to get the burn layer simply by subtracting Dodge layer from Normal layer. You should be able to get that by having Normal layer below the Dodge layer and change layer properties to "subtract". Am I missing something here?

    This is fascinating. And yet I'm wondering even if I learn this technique will it be faster than the way I created an action for my dodge and burn layers. I'm going to try this and come to a conclusion. Maybe if I can master this technique without having to follow the tutorial this way will be faster. Maybe it will look better, I'm going to keep an open mind. Photoshop always has lots of ways to come to the same result so for me it's got to be faster or better or both before I change.
