  • Hello everyone! Welcome to our channel. Today we are going to explore the artificial reef created by sinking the former gunboat C59 "Francisco Márquez." Join us on this underwater adventure!
The former gunboat C59 "Francisco Márquez" was a ship that served in the Mexican Navy. After being decommissioned, it was prepared to become an artificial reef. One of the unique aspects of this ship is that it fell on its side, making internal navigation very easy. However, we recommend bringing a flashlight. Its interior is fascinating and full of life, especially large dog snapper.
On its exterior, the C59 is surrounded by marine life, with many reef fish and abundant turtles resting on its hull. This artificial reef is not only a spectacular dive site but also a vital refuge for the region's marine biodiversity.
The history of the C59 is even more fascinating when considering its origin. The ship began its life as the SS Diploma, an Admirable-class minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. It participated in several operations in the Pacific and received three battle stars for its service. After the war, the SS Diploma was decommissioned and placed in reserve. In 1962, it was sold to the Mexican Navy and renamed ARM DM-17, and later as ARM Cadete Francisco Márquez (C59).
In 2004, after being cleaned of pollutants, the ship was deliberately sunk off the west coast of Isla Espíritu Santo, near La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Today, it rests on its side at a depth ranging from 9 to 20 meters, becoming a popular local dive site.
This dive site is exciting and full of life. Underwater photographers and videographers will find the C59 a paradise, with plenty of light entering the ship's remains, allowing for spectacular image captures. Additionally, it is an excellent example of how a sunken structure can revitalize the marine ecosystem.
It is home to sea turtles, reef fish, and many other marine species, demonstrating the benefits of these projects for biodiversity.
So, if you are looking for a unique diving experience surrounded by beautiful marine life, you can't miss the C59 "Francisco Márquez." Thank you for joining us on this underwater adventure! Don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and leave your comments. See you next time!
