    Great vid. I agree with calling it fundamentals. Would love to hear those positional lever concepts.

    For those white belt stripes I would make the very first stripe mount, side mount and back defense and escapes. Then guard passing and guard retention for the second stripe. Then sweeps and sweep defense for the third stripe. And then, for the fourth and final stripe, De La Riva sweep to spinning cartwheel guard pass swooping triangle from the mount.

    THIS! This is how BJJ should be taught and gauged. Such clarity! Factoring in diversity of areas while maintaining focus over a logical and consistent schedule to ensure all the fundamental bases are covered and reinforced. Very nice to see someone who 'gets it'! Thank you Rob and Stephan for this incredible answer.

    I like that your classes are very organized. I attended a school that was very disorganized, and left to another school, because I couldn’t retain the information, or understand how to apply the information or techniques. I really like your dvd also...very clear teaching of the concepts.

    i've been practicing bjj for about 13 months. I received my third stripe on my white belt last month. It seems, every few weeks, i think to myself.....how long until blue belt? I feel things changing in me at a rapid rate. i feel as if i gain more knowledge in a week, than i gained in a month just a little while ago. I guess im really hungry for it right now. But even more than that, what i have truly gained, is friendship, comradery, and a new "family" . Starting my journey was one of if not the best decision that i have ever made.

    interestingly enough, I did learn berimbolo on my first day! I did not do a fundamentals class (not offered at this gym), so the class had students with mixed levels of experience. Coach didn't set out to teach me berimbolo on the first day - showing me some basics instead while others were drilling it - but at some point in the drilling I gave it a go and continued learning it in my first few weeks as coach went in a deep dive with the more advanced students.
    Not to say I've mastered it, or have even ever used it against a live partner, but hey, maybe someday.
    Anyway, I appreciate the videos, Stephan and Rob. Good stuff for newbies like me trying to figure out this crazy jammie-wrasslin sport.

    let's face it- a big part of the problem causing anxiety is lower rank stripes/belts with prior grappling experience, aggression, testosterone copping attitudes and wanting to feel good about themselves by hammering the new blue belt. When someone gets promoted some of your brothers (usually it will be dudes) are peeved and want to prove themselves by tapping out the higher belt. They'll go harder than they should, risk injury, and take away the joy the comes from learning in a good controlled roll. Not much you can do about it...

    I've always loved bjj, and my friend showed me a lot when he did classes, and we sparred. And I've been wanting to join and learn more to do competitions and challenge myself with this art form. I have brute force but the technique is amazing. I just can't decide on where to go? What should I look for in my instructor and classes?

    • @StephanKesting
      @StephanKesting  7 лет назад +12

      My standard advice is always this: given that you're potentially going to be spending years doing this art it makes sense to first spend a couple of weeks visiting every BJJ school in your town/neighbourhood/vicinity and try a free class. Make notes about how the instructors act, how the other students are, and other things that matter to you (cleanliness, etc.). It's OK to tell the school that you're thinking about starting BJJ and that you're checking out different schools. After you do this for a week or two and check out 4-10 schools the decision will usually be obvious!

    I heard two things in this video that would be helpful to me. Back escape and mount escape. I could care less about the art and beauty of jiu-jitsu, just show me how to defend against a punch. The thug at 7/11 can care less about my de la riva guard. I want to know how I can live after that encounter. After that, yes. Make me a Pan Am champion!

    • @Jacky-Boy
      @Jacky-Boy 7 лет назад

      Not tried this, but if you're trying to bait them to cross their ankles, I'd look at maybe bridging and trying to peel their feet off your hips, you're only gonna catch early whitebelts crossing their legs though in any manner so I wouldn't rely on it for a comp or as anything other than punishing a stupid mistake

    • @IslandTopTeam

      Cody Cannon Thanks, I think it is an excellent way to sharpen the skills that advanced students often only perform occasionally in rolling. I actually make a point of attending the 101 classes taught by my assistant instructor and participating as a student. I find this has been very helpful for my game, working on bridging, framing, hip escapes, etc.

      In my school the fundamental class is on Tuesday and Thursday (Basically self-defense, mind set to avoid escalation of situation, distance management,survival techniques and take downs). Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we focus more on Jiu-Jitsu against Jiu-Jitsu and some advanced moves and its variations because of the advanced belt mates.

      As silly as it sounds, you know exactly where you are in your school when you roll. The rank itself doesn't really tell you a tremendous amount. Be sure to continue working and training and keep an open mind. You are progressing even if you don't feel like it. Best of luck, and don't get to caught up on the pseudo rank. It helps in a way to give motivation, but it really isn't that impirtant. Best of luck my friend. :)

      @sp6990 6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like you're doing fine. BJJ doesn't need stripes or belts for training. If you are doing well in comps that's your measuring stick. If your instructor is a purple belt they might not be regarded as qualified to give our belts. It would have nothing to do with their ability, just that some believe the only black belts give out the belts. Some places don't give out stripes and just do belts, so the system can vary. A lot of it is just to mark progress, which gives incentive. Good luck with your training oss
