The Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Suit
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 май 2024
- At ~700 km above Earth, the EVA suit will support the Polaris Dawn crew in the vacuum of space during the first-ever commercial astronaut spacewalk.
Evolved from the Intravehicular Activity (IVA) suit, the EVA suit provides greater mobility, a state-of-the-art helmet Heads-Up Display (HUD) and camera, new thermal management textiles, and materials borrowed from Falcon’s interstage and Dragon’s trunk.
Building a base on the Moon and a city on Mars will require millions of spacesuits. The development of this suit and the execution of the spacewalk will be important steps toward a scalable design for spacesuits on future long-duration missions as life becomes multiplanetary. - Наука
That's crazy that they managed to incorporate all the features required for EVA such as articulating joints while still maintaining much of the sleek aesthetic of the original flight suit.
they did it because all of the life support hardware is contained inside Dragon instead of in the suit like other EVA suits. This is fine for Polaris dawn because the EVA will be short and they don't have to move around much (similar to the Gemini EVAs which also had the life support taken care of by the spacecraft)
It's like they actually tried to make it not giant.
Nasa is too slow
@@TiagoNugentComposer so there will be many hose attached to the suit itself?
@@ahmadfauzi5757 yep
For those of you who may be uninformed, these new EVA suits are a bit different from the EMUs we see on the ISS in that these will be constantly attached to an umbillical providing all the neccessary power, air, and cooling to the suits, hence why theyre missing the big "backpack" like the NASA EMUs. They wont be fully seperated from the ship like the EMUs can. Nonetheless these will still be some pretty sick upgrades for their purpose! Apparently they will also have HUDs in their visors that give them all their data kinda like in sci-fi movies!
I could totally imagine that SpaceX designed these with a future modular life-support backpack in mind, though
Well said, its a good base for them to work off though which I think is the plan. The one thing im interested in is how the zipper seals work.
Imagine an EMU suit by SpaceX, I imagined it looks like this but with an additional backpack attached to it
I mean, more tethers to the space station so you don't go floating off.
similar to Mercury EVA suits.
but, way more Advanced.
I'm not even that old, (30) but stuff that was simply sci-fi when I was a kid is becoming real.

Woah there, until someone pops out an airlock in this sick drip, its still Sci-Fi.

This seems like a significant upgrade, to what's available in the market currently. So welcoming.
@@amirshahab3400 it's a dangerous expansive downgrade, this is why NASA didn't want this "upgrade".
@@AttiasBarak more explanations please
@@seikkoo it's overpriced because it's made by SpaceX (and because they are on the brink of bankruptcy), it's dangerous (as EVA) because it doesn't have any redundancy also I doubt that it was tested properly, and it's not an upgrade because there is a giant tube connected to you at all time.
@@AttiasBarak You're gonna need a source there. Did a quick Google and NASA's opinion of the suits has been very positive. I can find nothing about them not wanting the upgrade.
It's so amazing when you have people who have the skills and commitment to realize our dreams of the future. Making it amazingly functional like we require, but sleek and simple like we see in our mind's eye. Great job suit teams. Another home run.

its still connected with a cord
@@camplays487 so, ya want them to float away?
@@GamerChip... they mean an umbilical that supplies electricity, air and so on, not a safety cord, that's why it doesn't have a big pack on it like the NASA suits.
All that is missing is the strip of led lights inside the helmet on full brightness shining into the face of the astronaut so they look good in movies.
Movies do that so you can see the actor's face. In real life, lights inside the helmet are a bad idea.

@@thespacementv1506why? We have time
Fun fact, much like the M in ATM, or the N in PIN, the D in HUD stands for display. You don't say display after you've already said HUD. you're saying heads up display display when you do that 😂😂 it's redundant.
@@joshuaeason3426 admire the resilience of your comment
They have HUD at the bottom of the screen irl now just like real science fiction!
Now I want a side by side comparison of a spacex EVA suit and IVA suit lol
yeah that would be sick what I like to do is look at the evolution of the space suites
It'll be pro vs noob.
NASA's IVA is cheaper, effective, and reliable while this "EVA" is expensive, inefficient, and dangerous (as an EVA)
@@AttiasBarak They are making this to the same required standards that NASA used to produce their suits. So if it is dangerous it's by NASA standards.
@@jekster hard doubt, as for everything with Elon stuff, we will see if it actually work in 2044. (As an EVA suit)
Wow. It's like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Good job, SpaceX!

Finally, designer clothes that are worth the money
As a child of the moon landings, Neil, Buzz, NASA, et al. inspired the kid in me. Y'all are the NASA of my adulthood re-igniting the excitement moving us beyond geriatrocracy. Go for EVA!
I know that feeling! Isn’t it amazing to wake up to see what they have done NEXT?
Did we really land on the moon though? I kinda feel it could've been a massive psyop to mess with the Soviets.
@@davidusry5048We did not land on the moon, no. :/
@Li-sq6ic just seems to me that if we did we would've been back many times and it wouldn't be taking this long to prepare for the next mission.
@@davidusry5048 Yes, the Soviets fully acknowledge we landed on the moon, and if they found out we "faked" it, they would publicly humiliate the U.S. Also, why would we not have? We had the rocket technology, and the reason why we did not make more than six landings there is because the cost of each mission was insanely expensive, and only funded this extremely due to the competition with the soviets. The total cost of the Apollo project, adjusted for today's money, was $250 Billion dollars, which in comparison to today's budget for NASA, is just a measly $25 Billion. We do have rockets that rival apollo today that are being developed, such as Starship, but the funding they have is astronomically less than NASA did during the cold war. For the part where people say "We faked it, we had the rocket technology so why wouldn't we have the CGI technology." The total computing power required to CGI the moonlandings was not accessible in the slightest, and physical sets would not have been as accurate as they had needed to be. To be clear, and I know this fact has been repeated a million times, but the computer that sent Apollo to the moon had about 1/100,000 the computing power your phone does, and even a super-computer from the 1980s had about 5000 times less computer power than your phone, and weighed 5000 times as much. So, believe what you want to believe, but don't blindly accept people just saying the moon landing wasn't real.
Very sleek for an EVA suit! Can't wait to see this being put to the test.
Simply amazing, I feel like this marks another huge milestone for humanity.

Hmm, yes, a very insightful point; SpaceX must research these issues. You should contact them and offer your assistance - or they will never _get off the ground_
If it's anything like Starship, or Muskrats nonsense in general, then it probably had 15 different leaks that could have been fixed but Elon said no because the fixes wouldn't look cool.

What a huge increase in mobility! Love the design!!
The mobility is exactly the same
@@delta-bird-thing-donkeysir506 the NASA Eva and this one are very different.
The suite is tehtered and therfore has limited range or mobility. It's one of those SpaceX design changes that have to be tested in space first. Especially regarding heat and cold dissipation on EVA's. Basically the suite has to be constantly monitored and heated or cooled through the attached hose.
@@QUADBOYification I guess I should have specified what I meant my Mobility. The wearer will have improved movement and mobility with their extremities while wearing the suit. This is a major improvement that should allow the wearer to move their arms around more effectively since it is less bulky.
@@QUADBOYification obviously this is designed to be tethered but being able to move around easier before, during and after any mission will be a big plus in this suit.

Actual Halo EVA design! Love it SpaceX
Those suits are awesome
Go Spacex, Go Polaris Dawn!!
This is the true space suit we were waiting for
Nah, this is a step towards a self-contained EVA suit, as this EVA suit has an umbilical connecting the suit to the spacecraft. A self-contained EVA suit is a minature spacecraft and difficult to make. So SpaceX is sensibly taking steps towards a self-contained EVA suit.

How did you make it that compact? Is it just tethered to a life support system onboard the ship?
Yes
It doesn’t include life support in it. Has to be connected to one
pretty much every early space-suit was tethered to onboard life support, plus it's a lot easier for maneuverability when not carrying a huge backpack.
also, if you float away you can just grab onto the tether and pull yourself back.

i don't think most people understand how impressive it is that they were able to fit so much into a suit this small and articutable
Nice, Congrats on your new EVA suit
This is gonna be the best EVA suit in aerospace history
That's not true. It likely won't have articulated legs because it won't need to walk, it won't have the SAFER unit like the ISS EVA suits, it will probably be a bit more leaky because of the zippers and because it's connected to the capsule, and it doesn't have a built-in life support system. It's totally sufficient for its needs, but that doesn't mean it's the best in history.
That's a pretty low bar.
@@linuxsbc i think they mean like the best looking eva suit in history
@@linuxsbc You can see the moon suits on the recent video from Destin on SmarterEveryDay for comparison. He went into the NASA training dive tank to see a simulated moon landing mission with starship. They talk all about suit pressure differentials and the benz for the first half and then go into the tank. There are interviews with the actual astronauts at the end. It is the coolest space video until the actual launch. The title to search is "How We Answer This Question is More Important Than You’d Think- Smarter Every Day 296 ".
@@linuxsbc you’re probably right about that but what makes it one of the best in history is the innovation in the materials and construction, that is vastly different from the space suits of the past, and other current companies, which will help contribute to a SpaceX space suit with a fix to everything you just explained. Remember of the great things about SpaceX is that they never stop innovating and shattering the wall of what was thought to be possible.
