(HERE IS A TIP) I got from a glass maker that works--your gonna laugh. But save some toilet paper rolls or paper towl rolls either works. When you reseal the windows together, use the edge of the rolls to scrape away the excess sealent. The excess goes into the tube end and it puches the sealent so you have very slight indent all the way around the glass, comes out nice and uniform and no excess to clean up! Less mess and looks like a factory seal. Very good informative video by the way sir! Thank you

Thanks Chris, for letting me know. My motorhome has 10 windows, I know what a big job this was for you. Perhaps you could help the next person by letting us know the changes and recommendations you have for this process. How many 66ft rolls of spacer did you use for your 16 windows? How many tubes of sealant? Any etching inside? How did you remove the
      moving window handle?

@@JCarlson Big job it was. I did pretty much as you said in the RUclips. I removed 5 windows at a time and worked in the garage. I put two 8' tables together and covered them with the soft shop floor mats you can purchase at Northern Tool. The oscillating tool was the best way to separate the glass. Tempered glass is very tough unless you pry or hit the edge with something rigid. I did break a small glass by sliding it across the table and lightly bumping a hammer. After that, I kept the table clear of everything but glass. Tempered glass is difficult to get so I went to a local glass shop and they cut a piece of laminated glass. Works just as well, same glass windshields are made from . None of my windows were etched. Once disassembled, I clean the glass first with acetone and then with denatured alcohol and micro fiber before I sealed the glass together. On the window handles, I tried the oscillating tool and did not feel comfortable with that process so I use a heat gun. I heated one side at a time and then used a thin metal putty knife between the glass and the handle and then the handle just pulled off. After the windows were reinstalled in the RV, I used a stiff plastic putty knife to remove the excess sealant that pushed out from behind the frame. In all, I used a little over 3 rolls of spacer and 10 tubes of sealant.

@@chrisperry2688 I like your heat method for removing the moving panel handle. The grease and oscillating tool method can be messy, and still has a potential to mark the glass.

I have to say that this was an excellent youtube video on a DIY project. One of the very best and thank you for that Mr. Carlson. what I found useful to make it easier to separate the two panes of glass is to use the soap / water mix and paint the outside edge of the spacer and the oscillating knife edge. that small amount of lubrication makes separating the two panes very easy. When removing the slider panel aluminum grip bar - I used the grease as he suggested - but what I noticed was that the aluminum channel was ribbed and as I separated it a little I dribble some of the soapy water to the grooves to assist on the removal.

Very helpful. I have a bunch of foggy windows in my motorhome. I am just not sure I want to tackle the job. I had my trailer windows resealed with butyl tape and the only thing I would recommend is that you use a plastic tool to trim away the excess butyl tape. The carpet knife will leave a cut mark in the finish of the wall. I used a plastic knife from the cutlery set you get with take-out food. You could use the edge of one of the red tools you used to pry the window out. With time and heat from the sun, the butyl tape will squish out so you may have to trim it again later. I kind of angled the plastic tool to make a slightly bevelled edge to encourage the rain to run away from the windows.

What you did on reassembly is almost identical to they way we made the insulated units back in the day. Things have changed but the concept is the same. I like that you used channel with desiccant. It is a drying agent and removes the moisture during windows assembly. I was rather suprised that the oscillating tool didn't pop the glass. But at any rate great job. Now I can do mine with your research on products.

Cool. Take your time, don't rush through it, you'll be fine. Remember to measure to find the thickness of the spacer you need, mine were 3/16. Also, make sure you assemble the panes together in a dry environment. Don't trap damp air between the layers of glass. The problem there is that on a warn, sunny day you would get temporary condensation inside. Not anything as horrible as the chemical fog problem you had in the first place, but still a bummer.

I followed the video and was able to remove the window, disassemble the fixed panel, clean it up, reassemble it, and reinstalled without too much effort. I put the slider back into the frame first so that I did not have to part the frame after I got the fixed panel back in. There was plenty of room to put the crossbar in when I pulled back the rubber gasket. Now my Driver-side window is going the same way. I have enough spacer and butyl sealant left over to do it some day soon.

J Carlson, this is a very informative video. What you didn’t tell your audience is how easy tempered glass breaks. Metal touching glass is fire and ice. If someone does this for the first time I’ll bet half of them if not more will break a pane. J Carlson is at a level that takes a lot of practice and a lot of broken windows. Great video J Carlson and great tip on the carpet shield.

I did 10 windows using the information from this video in my '08 Pacifica. I did have one window shatter on me and naturally it was the big drivers side one. It was shaped like a giant comma and the area I had issues was where if made the bend down into the comma tail. The frame is bent to contour the glass and was just too tight!!! After playing with it and adding more and more force to get it out it shattered both panes. The issue is now most glass is metric in thickness and thinner, so I had to use a thicker spacer to get the outside thickness of the panes correct for the frame. I was lucky to find a window manufacture in Springfield MO that had the ability to cut and heat treat the glass for me. All the windows which were like the one in this video were easy peasey and were done with no issue. Great video!!!

I’m truly impressed. Great job. There is a widow defogging method that is on the net from out of Canada. I came very close to buying into their process but it sounds to good to be true. It basically tells you to drill holes in glass, spray vinegar between panes to remove fog and calcium, then rinse with a solution. For $ 50 they allow you watch their cleaning procedure. The kits they sell are not cheap. $300 is least expensive. After doing more research I found your video and immediately knew you had a process that would work. I purchased and replace 3 of my windows several years back and 2 of 3 are fogged again. I spent $3000 to purchase windows and my labor and Fleetwood wouldn’t help at all with warranty or replacement. Thanks to you, I have a plan. I still have widows I removed and will repair them. After repair I will exchange. Thanks for taking the time to help fellow Rvers with a very expensive repair that if buying new don’t think it won’t do the same thing over time. Dan

This makes it easier to have the edge of the panel free of sealant so it slides and fits better. The sealant guide mentioned in the video does this the best, but I used my fingertip to create this gap. If the sealant went to flush with the glass, the sliding panel would drag, and the fixed panel might not fit as well.

Please note that the spacer comes in different thicknesses. Measure your window panel thickness to determine the correct spacer and sealant tool before ordering. Mine was 3/16 inch.

I am retiring in a few months and decided that once I am out, I would go at this I have a 2008 Fleetwood DiscoveryX 42' and almost all of the windows have gotten to this point. We have waited thinking of trading it in, but to be honest, we love it and were hesitant because of the cost to have the windows done. Almost as much to replace them all. Thanks again and I will definitely let you and everyone one else know how it goes. Rick.

Thanks Rick. I wish my video would have made it clear that the spacer needs to be ordered in the correct thickness. Measure your windows, get the correct spacer. Please post your additions and suggestions to the process as you tackle this project. Take your time. Remember, tempered glass can seem really strong, but it's glass. It can and will break. It's already been reported that heat works good to remove the handle from the moving panel. The video doesn't show the heat method. I also suggest a rechargeable power caulk gun of your favorite brand. I used a Ryobi from Home Depot. It's easier to flow a consistent amount of sealant, and easier on the grip muscles. You can look forward to enjoying the view from your crystal clear windows!

Very usefull and informative. 2 windows of my motohome have this kind of issue. The door's window and driver's window. A guy came to me one day and ask me about 1000$ cdn per window to fix them. Quite a lot! I tought there was gaz inside the window so i didn't know that it wasn't the case. I intend to start with the door's window and I'll see if i feel confortable for the next one.

The glass company wants $1200 for four panes of laminate glass. And they're not even the right color. DIY FTW.

Nice job on spacer application and the whole process! Some cautions... Do not open spacer bag until ready to use in a dry environment. Work as quickly as possible. This is called Super Spacer, silicone foam impregnated with desiccant. It works best with a hot melt butyl rubber sealant, which is applied hot, about 350F. Silicone sealant will NOT prevent water vapor ingress. It has a very high MVTR or Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate. A butyl based caulk might be a better choice. Moisture will get back into cavity between the glass. Finally, silicone sealant doesn’t dry, it cures with moisture.

    • @JCarlson
      @JCarlson 3 года назад +4

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a comment. You are so right in your cautions about keeping the super spacer sealed and dry until use. Please note that my video shows CR Laurence #877 Super Spacer sealant. Yes, it's a silicone product, but they make this urethane low solvent product for use at normal temperature behind their Super Spacer. Virtually none of us "do it yourself" people have the capability to install 350F sealant. I have confidence in the engineering of CR Laurence in their Super Spacer and the sealant made for use with it.

@@JCarlson Again, not taking anything away from your video - splendid job and wonderful video showing the steps. Just trying to educate about insulating glass components. CR Lawrence is an aftermarket house. They will sell whatever you want to buy. Silicone sealant is only used with a Super Spacer known as Tri-Seal (invented by a former boss of mine). As mentioned, perhaps a butyl "caulk" would be a better choice. Not sure what is out there that would have an acceptable MVTR. A polyurethane sealant (not silicone or siliconized) is a far better choice. True enough that one would have to visit a replacement IG shop to have the hot melt butyl gunned in (with the white HDPE block you showed).

Finally finished the 2 front windows. It took 4 months! The 2 biggest problems were 1) the super spacer was out of stock, and 2) I ordered what you showed in the video which was 1/4” thick spacer. When it finally arrived, I put the panes together, but then it would not fit into the frame. It was too thick!! I found a company near me which had done window defogging in the past and who had some 3/16” spacer left over. You might caution people to check thickness! 1/16 of an inch may not seem like much, but this is glass!

Thanks to your video, I successfully removed, separated, cleaned and resealed the passenger side window of our Fleetwood Southwind but I ran into an issue when I was putting everything back together. The 1/2" rubber U trim gasket that goes around the sliding window is MIA. I found a small piece of it in the trash so at least I have a sample of it. Do you know where I can obtain the gasket that goes around the double pane sliding window? Thanks again for taking the time and effort to create the video. FYI, a glass guy was at our house replacing the driver's side windshield of the motorhome and he said he would fix the fogged window for $650. I have approximately $200 invested which includes a new $50 pneumatic caulking gun and I have plenty of supplies for one or two additional windows. Edit: I figured out that the gasket was just for the slide bar. I caulked it to secure it and all is good. I'll be fixing the remaining windows after an upcoming trip. Thx again. Also, I don't know why my name comes up as Movie Channel but I'll live with it for now.
