- Another Custom Knife Series! I just love customizing knives. I wanted to try some new techniques and make a handle with my new Black Walnut Burl boards. So here is the first episode; Prepping the blade with a patina.
The blade I am using is a carbon steel blade from Karesuando Kniven:
www.karesuandok...
I've always done my force patina with ketchup, or mustard, but never tried a vinegar bath first. So, I'll have to try your technique tonight on my new Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty.
The Apprentice, eh?
*points*
You're hired!
I didn't even know patina etching helped protect from rust. That's amazing.
Haha thanks!
Very cool. I will have to try this. Looking forward to seeing the handle Thanks for sharing. ATB. Robert
thanks!
I tried same thing with tomatoe ketchup from Heinz as well as mcFlurry ice cream instead of mustard. Works really well!
You're kidding. You dipped your knife in a McFlurry?
...I mean, did it actually WORK?
That was awesome. I have a ZT0350 in tigerstripe. I wanted to replicate or make a similar pattern on my kabar. Thanks for sharing!
Some sights say for a darker patina to boil the vinegar first as it helps make the patina almost Black. And let it soak in the vinegar overnight etc.
Yep that makes a very nice looking blade
Did this to 2 of my knives and it worked great. Thanks for the vid
👍🏻 nice job man. I Will try this on some of my knifes thanks to you ;)
"Nice" - Thanks, even me at 72 Just learned a New Valuable Lesson :))
How great is that :)
--- Blessings
Looks like you have some very active employees. They sure love their daddy.
haha
@@lefteris1606 Nothing rustproof carbon steel. but it helps prevent rust from building up so fast. always clean and dry carbon steel knives after use. And yes, it would def work on 1095. that's carbon steel.
@@lefteris1606 Oh sorry, missed that. I haven't worked with D2 but according to Google it's high carbon as well, so should take a patina.
Can't wait to see the burl handle.
+David Kuhns I'll start working on it this week. Should be pretty cool!
Very nice must give that a try thanks for sharing
I've found submersing a blade in boiling vinegar and letting it soak for ten to thirty minutes while still on the heat, to work much better. But it looks good regardless.
it works even better with vinegar concentrate (25%), i used a glas jar with screw cap boiled inside a water boiler (both heated up from cold).
the trick is the cap must be loose and when its boiling the cap can be closed slightly. so you can boil your metal without nasty vigegar acid steam ruin your home atmosphere :D.
Hyper Hektor does it work with stainless steel?
What about vinegar with 5% acidic, will it work? Cos here I can't get more than 5% acidic
Shoudn't
Arzat
It will work, but you'll need to let it soak much more longer.
Good job dude and thnks for sharing..i alrdy try on my knife but mix 2 type of vinegar👍👍
Awesome ... will try on my first custom cleaver
Awesome job 🙌
nice video.... you didnt babble on and on... you got to the point... and the pattern looks nice... im making a 17" bowie right now... which will get this finish... thank you
Great video, thank you. Clear voice and thorough explanations. One question if you don’t mind…
Without batoning (sp?) will regular use in the bush such as whittling, fuzz stick fire staring, meat cutting, etc. ruin the patina? Thank you.
gracias por el excelente video un saludo desde España
Qué le pone después del vinagre, parece mostaza no?
*Looked superb straight out of the vinegar. But I think you jumped the shark with the mustard.*
how has the patina held up after 10 months?
its carbon steel or stainless steel ?
@@markhamilton3215 Carbon, its has to be able to rust to get that patina
How durable was the pattern? Does it wear off after a time and need to be redone? Also, not in the case of a knife, but I am assuming you could clear coat over it and preserve it, am I right? Thanks man, awesome technique
An answer to this would be good. I was just typing a comment "How hardwearing is the patina?" when I saw the above comment. So please, an answer?
still waiting for answer also, if the finish last as long as the waited answer that is pretty long!!!
haha
@N gate thanks a million
@@Smashpatate very long indeed
GREAT JOB ...looks good :)
Never knew this was a possible way to pattern a knife.
It kinda makes it look like Damascus
10 layer damascus blade only 10.99 *made in china*
would you use the blade on food products? any issues with contamination? I would think its safe, unlike cold blu chemicals and could be used on cooking butcher knives or cleavers?
Bel video,complimenti. Ps...Che cosa è la mostarda? Grazie👍🔪
After adding a patina to my knife (which I took to a mirror finish), the surface feels very rough in comparison to before... Is this normal? I gave it a light rub down with wire wool after, and it's well oiled... Not sure if I should try and Polish it again, but I would assume I would remove the patina? Besides that one issue, I love the look of it!
Cool man. The roughness is normal. you "ate into the metal" its normal.
I kind of want to do this to a sonewashed blade, do you think it would still work?
it's a stainless steel as well
What is name of the company where you purchased the knife?
what did you wrap the blade with before giving it the vinegar treatment?
paper towel
How "well" this darken holds to the blade?
Exilium World the patern might fade a bit but the point is to give a jump start to something that happens naturally. So the patina is foreever.
Why did you put quotation Mark's on "well"?
Nice job on the patina. Who did you buy the knife blade through?
thanks! I got it from Paul at bushcraft Canada
Alright I'm gonna let it sit for about thirty minutes........... Ok it's been sitting for about 718 days.... 😂
What kind of vinegar do you use?
I mean every kind of vinegar is good or some special?
stugutka
Nah. Just some good old white vinegar will do you well enough.
Cool video...can you patina a SS knife blade??? I was given one that's pretty messed up. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
you can but it takes a much stronger acid
Use ferric chloride.
Sweet! Did the mustard cause the darker, or lighter stripes???
+trollforge The mustard caused the stripes.so all the colors that cause the stripes to come out. Thanks for watching!
Can this work on jewelry
Not a big fan of this technique. But to each his own. To me, patina is the badge of a well used and well taken care of tool. Not something you do in an afternoon. But again, some people like doing this, so go for it.
thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts!
+The Apprentice Yeah, for sure. Just my opinion and preference. Carry on, good channel.
Was the knife stainless steele
Hello thanks for video, is nice knife , what u use is at minute 5:35???
Julio Cavalera household mustard
I would call it a tiger-stripe patina..Well done!!
+apextroll Thanks!
Does this prevent rust.
it does!
does this work for stainless steel?
No, just carbon steel
Click bait where is that blue color from title picture
Is it possible to make a jet black patina?
maybe, but I don't know how
The Apprentice That's o.k... after all you are only an Apprentice LOL JK I'm sure you will always out master me with blades. I'll keep looking Thanks.
Google Insta-blak
Force “patina’ing” is sooo hardcore survival!! 🤦♂️
i let my mora sit in mustard for aboutan hour and nothing happened
Daniel Schlegel because it has a protective coat on it
Daniel Schlegel moras are gay like that...
like what? haha
i realised that too after a while
@@Daniel-dj7fh Has to be carbon steel i think. The process won't work with stainless.
its not a patina it is a stain....it. takes years to get a carbon. patina....not. a stain.
Nope, Its a patina. You can have a patina form age and natural oxidation or you can force the patina with a process.
