Thanks so much for taking me out and being a great mentor! I have already fallen in love with the sport and am excited to pursue it further! Tristan is a great teacher and I have learned a ton from his videos. 🎣
I just went Tenkara fishing for the second time. The first time I was alone and had no idea what I was doing. Zero luck. An experienced Tenkara guy took me out two day ago. It was a windless 28 degree day in SE Minnesota and we hiked through knee deep snow to get to the creek. The casting was way different than fly fishing and I took a bit to get the hang of it. Lots of trees along the narrow creek and we waded upstream. We used red necked soft hackle pheasant tail nymphs. He exclusively fishes nymphs. Despite the trees and my beginner skills, I caught 5 very nice size brown trout on a Tenkara USA Sato rod ( which I purchased used from a TU event). After 2.5 hours on the creek, the cold finally forced my frozen fingers and toes to quit. I experienced the joy and fun that your buddy Todd did and I am totally hooked. I cant wait for another 30 degree day to get back out there. I learned even more watching this fun fulled video. Thanks.
I love how excited you two are, it's very wholesome. Fishing (mostly fly and tenkara, but I do spin and baitcast here and there too) is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world.
Always great to see a new angler join the ranks of tenkara fishers! Some excellent mentoring on an ideal teaching stream! Many thanks for sharing this!
You young men are so amazing. The world needs such inspiring messages of peace. Really enjoy this. I’ve done all types of fishing mostly salmonids and trout, but I am going to try something new again thanks to this. Tenkara here I come. I am in my late 50s and don’t have a father or son, but I imagine I’d really be proud to have both of you gentlemen as sons. 🙏
Really enjoy your videos. As a Fly fisherman for 45+ years I bought and fished my first tenkara rod this spring. Almost all my fishing has been with dry flies but after observing tenkara I thought I might learn a bit about fishing wet flies and nymphs by fishing tenkara style. I believe this to be true and would recommend others try tenkara for lessons that can be learned.
I think this is my favorite video of yours so far, just so cool to see the mutual excitement between you guys! Really captures how fun it is to bring people along with you, especially in such an intimate fishing setting like Todd said. Awesome!!
what a fun video…..seeing Todd’s excitement when catching fish was such fun. And, wow…..couldn’t believe the size of the fish in that small, shallow creek!!! my rod is in the mail…..can’t wait to get out and use it
Once I was driving and my Mrs asked out of the blue: -"What is the most beautiful thing you have seen?", and before I had engaged my brain I replied: -"A male brook trout in spawning colors!" For the rest of that trip I got to regret that statement! Oh, and I enjoyed this and subscribed. I learned about Tenkara just the other day and want to know more after having fly fishing since 50 years.
That first brookie was beautiful. After having my best day ever with a fly rod a few weeks ago with exclusively Rio Grande Cutthroats, I am reminded just how pretty they are in comparison. Your videos are the reason I got interested in Tenkara, and i couldn't have fished that creek with a standard fly rod... so THANK YOU for the push!!!
I had to comment to say thanks getting me into tenkara! I’m a regularly fly fish and saw your videos and it looked like a blast. Got a rod a few days ago I took it out for the second time at the lake and met a guy who had never fished and with a little coaching, in 20 min he caught a 15-16 inch rainbow (bigger than any we’d caught all day by a couple inches) and couldn’t stop thanking me, got great pics and it made both of our days. Love the videos!
I recently got into Tenkara and love your videos. Thanks for sharing gear used. I'm in East TN with ready access to the Great Smoky Mountains. Still waiting to catch my first mountain stream trout!
Just bought the Tenkara USA Hane rod and it comes tomorrow. Knotted the line to the tip of my fly rod yesterday and got a little perch. This video has me so pumped to go out this weekend
I was listening to the Orvis podcast a few days ago and a tip they said with cutthroats is to turn them upside down while you’re preparing to take photos. It disorients them and calms them down a bit
Another great video. I had a similar experience with a buddy of mine. He was pretty resistant to try Tenkara, but I got him to try. He loved it Now, he owns more rods then I do and is almost strictly a Tenkara fisherman.
When I was a kid growing up in California my dad would take me small stream fishing and I was so excited to catch small fish. When I was 13 my parents moved me to Washington. There I fell in love with steelhead and salmon fishing. Chasing big fish became my passion and I abandoned small streams and small fish. Watching these videos has stirred somthing in me and I will be purchasing one of these rods. What brand of rod do you reccomend?
Tenkara is so much fun. I fish mostly western but I will use my Tenkara rod when ever I get the chance. The casting is so intuitive. Put your index finger on top of the cork tuck your elbow into your side and just point your finger with a little wrist action. Tenkara is a great way to introduce people to fly fishing. It's great for people with mobility issues or limited range of motion. Smaller creeks have less people and generally more fish. I'd rather catch 50 fish and be away from chaos than catch 3 fish on an over fished river littered with trash. Tenkara allows you a much faster turnover rate which means your fly is on the water more. You can use a regular tapered leader with some practice and you can use your regular standard dry flies. I generally start with a 9' tapered leader 3x and add 4x to match the length of the rod plus a foot or so. I've used a 8'10" rod with 15' of leader. I was able to cast 25' with it. I tie some Tenkara flies but parachute Adams, mosquitoes, ants, bwo, caddis all work just fine and every fly shop has them. Good luck and tight lines.
Yall outta try tennis river impoundment for bream, or crappie or bass with simple baits, or some colonial coarse fishing tackle. Also a float tube etc.
Great video and good fun. A pleasant change having one of your buddies who is new to Tenkara out with you. It's nice hearing you go over the very basics of casting, netting, etc. Good stuff. Always look forward to your videos on Saturday morning. Keep it up!
So Todd, didja face hurt from grin'n from that good time??? I use both fly and Tenkara, usually have both when it's a hike to water. Switching between the two can be a challenge especially concerning wrist action. Tristan, your Hero today! Well done both of ya!! Now my face is gunna hurt from grin'n...thanks guys!!! Well Done! Outstanding!!! Such beautiful and healthy trout!!
I think if you have basic fly fishing knowledge you will do great with the Tenkara. Don't over think it, just go out and learn as you go! Have fun and tight lines everyone!
This has been very helpful as a beginner tenkara person. I got my tenkara rod last year...have had no bites...but many questions answered in this video. Going to go to the Smokies guided trip in a couple weeks...hoping to get some hands on training their too.
You should look in to designing a spring loaded telescoping landing net to make landing the fish easier and once released it is reset save the bend and scoop...?
I just got a rod, very basic but I am now hype after seeing this video! I am a very very beginner but have been watching a lot of videos and can’t wait to fish the rod. I have a 12 ft max catch rod. What is a recommendation on the line and flies to start off with?
Hey Tristan, I’ve been watching both of your channels for a couple of years but just got around to purchasing my first Tenkara rod. Super excited to get out on some small streams. Thanks for all of the great info.
That was fun. Would have been nice if you could have elaborated a bit and shown us what flies you were fishing with. A shame that that is not usually the case in fishing videos.
Nice tutorial. It's revealing to watch and hear the techniques explained to another person on video. A possible addition might have been a bit more on landing (e.g., when does it make sense to grab the level line with your free hand to control the fish in close, as opposed to dealing with the entire length of line and tippet). Much appreciated!
We talked about that off camera, but you're right, it would have been good to talk about that in particular. Basically if I'm having trouble netting the fish by just bringing it toward me, I'll grab the line. It's always a gamble, though.
So I guess I better save up for a tenkara rod. Seems to be a better solution to Eastern US creeks with overgrown trees almost to tight for fly fishing with the big long cast.
My daughter bought me a Tenkara rod, I haven't got to use it yet. I've been watching videos to learn how. This video was very helpful. Where did you get the fishing net you use? I live in Arkansas, just a few rivers we can trout fish here. What state are you fishing? Please more instructional videos for us beginners. Thanks
Find it really interesting how in the US you tend to talk about size of fish in inches and in the UK we would almost always refer to the mass/weight ie a 1lb fish etc.. what is the largest trout would you think is feasible to catch with the tenkara method? Please give the answer in lbs as i have no idea what the size of fish inches means!!
I'm just now getting into Tenkara and really appreciate your work. The fly you're using on this creek, is it a subsurface? dry? curious. How would you fish this fly?
Great video and fish! ~Quick question you always refer to dragon tail tenkara... what makes that different from tenkara USA for example? thanks! Sorry if this question is a common one but I couldn't find that answer.
I am new to river fishing, how do you keep the water out of your boots without a one piece set of waders? do the pants on your overalls clinch down enough to keep the water from seeping in? Great Tenkara content!
I have been looking at getting into fly fishing since I moved to East Tennessee but I think you have got me decided on tenkara now because I am really only interested in fishing smaller, higher elevation streams. Do you recommend the Mizuchi as a good beginner rod?
ok I already catch on ewery method I know but youtube just show this to me and now I know that I need one more :) looks fun for simple plaing with smaller fish
Great video and love seeing that joy when a fish is caught! What techniques were you using for manipulating the fly in the water? From what it looks like - I think you are drifting for just a moment then slowly raising the fly upwards in the water?
Cool rod but how is this different from a telescopic crappie pole? $25 vs $250? I loved fly fishing and this intrigues me but wondering the difference?
Tristan. You gave Todd a chance to fish under the bridge first. Maybe next time Todd will take advantage of your "White Arrow of Hookness", tm Cathy B. :-) Tight Lines guys. BTW- Have Todd check out Dragontail Tenkara for his first Tenkara rod. Great prices and Quality too.

Very nice Brook. Also i might just go fly fishing , i think u have convinced me to try.

Just gotta convince your wife to let you get a rod! 😁

So rewarding to share your passion with someone else and watch them learn and enjoy it. Gorgeous creek, gorgeous fish.
Yep, it was fun to see him do so well. Thanks John!
Always great to see a new angler join the ranks of tenkara fishers! Some excellent mentoring on an ideal teaching stream! Many thanks for sharing this!
Thanks Michael! I gave Todd a few options on creeks to fish, and he definitely picked the best one.
Big smile on my face watching this! So glad the algorithm suggested it. Very fun to see both of your reactions. Thanks!

The Tri-fecta of video fly-fishing; Setting the hook in all 3; your fish, your fans & Todd!

Best video you've done, by far.
Todd's excitement is infectious! 👍😄🎣
Haha glad to hear it! It is so fun!
My Teton Zoom just arrived today. Always watch your SUV RVing videos and just came across this. As a beginner, Thank you!!

I'm sure most Tenkara beginners can gain and benefit from the experience shared in this video.
Beautiful to watch! Simplicity, but yet an art form. Steeped in tradition! Love it. Thanks for sharing it. I think you just hooked a new follower!

Such authentic enthusiasm for the sport and mutual appreciation for each other’s areas of expertise! Thanks for the instruction!
Love all your videos but this one was especially nice. Loved your interaction with Todd as a newbie and it was instructive for us as well. Thanks!

"Tristan calls the fish." A tribute to your experience and expertise.

congrats for both
I prefer fishing alone most of the time, but it was fun taking a friend out who was really excited about it. Thanks Carlos.

Ordered the same dragon tail. Can't wait to try it out.
Looking forward to your review on the TalonMINI Rod
I have the same waders as Todd and I caught my first Tenkara fish on the Mizuchi!

Great video! You need to bring Todd fishing more often
I agree 100% 😎
@@FishingCircle you need to get your version of the tenkara fishing posted

When it's warm, you don't need waders. It's called wet wading. You just wear quick drying pants or shorts and your wading boots, which drain water.

So what was Todd's first tenkara fish?
Nothing like the sound of hooking a fish under a bridge.
I’d like to try this but in Las Vegas..
Bought a Tenkara rod, very frustrating, I’m not getting the groove yet. I keep reaching for line that’s not there
I cam see those are better for shallow water than a mepps
I’m assuming dry fly?
Great video ! Just recently picked up a Mizuchi rod my self and was wondering up to what size of fish can these rods handle?
It's a stout little rod. I've caught trout up to 18 inches on it.
How well does that work with lake fishing/bass?
Do you ever dry fly fish with your tenkara
What length of line do you use for the length of the pole?
