- Hearing Radio Gaga was one of the songs responsible for sparking my love affair with synths. I was a young boy at the time and heard it through my parents hifi system on vinyl, it absolutely blew me away. I also love how John Deacon's bass lines dance around the synth bass.
Now, 40 years later I have had a crack at recreating this classic track. The original featured a Roland Jupiter 8, VP-330 vocoder and a Linndrum LM1. In my version I have used a Roland System 8 in Jupiter 8 mode, a Roland Fantom 06 and some Linndrum samples.
I sequenced the drum beat and also the bass, everything else was played in live and overdubbed. As well as the JP8 arpeggiated bass sound I also created the 'real bass' patch on the System 8 in JP8 mode as I couldn't get the bend range I wanted on the Fantom bass patches for the slides, I think it turned out pretty good.
System 8: JP8 bass riff, elec bass, lead synth at end
Fantom 06: Vocoder, piano, pads, choir sound - I created a scene in the Fantom with layers and splits of a piano, pad, choir and harpsichord, I bring in the choir patch with a fader.
I may look at doing a video tutorial on how I put it all together and the sound design, let me know if you are interested.

Jamming on the knobs in the interlude, now that's a true artist.
