You guys need to understand the setting. The context. HE IS PLAYING IN THE STREETS OF NEW YORK. No its not a concert hall dedicated to sound, or an empty room, literally people yapping about irrelevant information talking back and forth. He is playing in that setting. Is it at the right speed? Probably not, but let it be known, he played the piece great!
That's when the music gets destroyed. When you try to adjust the music. It shouldn't be that way. Don't half ass Chopin. If it doesnt favor the situation then shouldnt have played it in the first place because people love Nocturne 9 due to it's gentleness and you're destroying it.
It's people like you who got me into classical music.. Whether it's spot on or not, it's beautifuly executed (In my humble opinion) and introduced me into a genre. You took classical music to the streets and nailed it.. Well done :)
I can’t believe people are criticising him for not playing at the composer’s intended tempo. My dream is to play this piece MY way, it has been done ‘properly’ by countless others. I will play it much slower in some parts and much faster than others, and use my own dynamics and accents. Because there’s a way that I wish it were played.
A nocturn by chopin played certainly in the day yet unique because this man has experienced travel and isnt playing it as a depressing song but as a song of nostalgia
My wish is to play this wonderful piece of music in 10 years. I just started with piano lessons in the age of 38 and I am sure I will managed it one day
@@raymondacbot4007 thanks. It's a big motivation. I (not really)enjoy to learn playing when the saints go marching in or happy birthday... but I also know, that the way is very long and I only made some steps 👍🙃
To those complaining about whether Kevin's played it too fast or not, here's a comparison: Arthur Rubinstein plays it in 266 seconds (4m 26s) - ruclips.net/video/YGRO05WcNDk/видео.html Kevin plays it in 225 seconds (3m 45s) In other words, Kevin played it 18.2% faster than Rubinstein - I think we can all agree that it IS too fast. Note that I am comparing length of piece, NOT playing style or interpretation. Other criticisms: 0:52 - he hits low B-flat instead of low A-flat: this wouldn't happen if he wasn't rushing the piece 2:00 - not sure why he's playing it as swing here lol 2:12 - he butchers the glissando 3:00 - that has got to be the stiffest passage of notes ever played in a Chopin piece o.O
interesting comparison. The only difference is... Kevin is playing it on the streets of NYC, where its easy to pick up the rhythm of the street and lose a sense of your speed. The city is very fast paced and makes it difficult to play and focus.
@@pianoaround - sorry, but that sounds like an excuse. I'm nowhere near as talented as Kevin on the piano, but I've played pieces at the right tempo on public pianos (St Pancras station in London, which is more crowded than that NYC street corner). Even if we accept his tempo, the left hand appegiated notes from 3:00 are played so badly - it's not even the hardest part of the piece, but he just "plods" the notes without any emotion.
Terrific job, well played. Ignore the ones criticizing with little musical background or skill. I play this myself, 'prefer' it a lot slower, but would never criticize anything here. Good work!

CinnamonOats no, this is the correct tempo at which Chopin marked it so this is the “correct” performance. I’ve learned this piece and I can definitely tell you that the way I played it (slower and with more rallentando ecc.) was overromantic. I can definitely hear all the minutios details that my teacher made me learn so IMO this is a standard performance of the piece which respects what Chopin wrote. You can, or course play it the way you like it, but you can’t say that his performance is objectively rushed. This is the correct tempo,(and I’m not saying thay you can’t not like it ofc), and furthermore, a lot of the popular performance of this piece are “””wrong””” (even if still beautiful), because they’re too slow. This is what can happen to famous pieces, they become icons and lose a portion of their original style. Just to sum things up: it’s ok if you don’t like it, but you can’t say it’s wrong because he’s playing (almost religiously must I say) what Chopin wrote. Byee
I agree with some comments here. Nocturne is not something you play for the sake of playing. Nocturne shouldnt be fast and reckless, not until the end point. Nocturne is basically carrying a child with gentleness and an explosion of emotions towards the end.
At 1:52 - Was it just me? I feel like the cameraman wanted to stop filming the girl checking out the pianist (did the pianist even straighten up a little bit when she approached the piano?), so the cameraman lowered the camera and filmed the man's hands, and only returned to his old spot, filming passersby, once she had left... In case I'm right, the cameraman is an artist too, so I feel like I understand him! (cwl)

I don't think most people dispute the fact he's played it well, it's just the tempo is a touch fast (not much, but still feels 'hurried').

exactly if you can sing or talk while playing; that's .. i mean..
Chopin's Nocturnes are very emotionally moving pieces, which makes them even more endearing.
