It was simply amazing to see Rafa back at a high level (even if far from his highest level). A HUGE difference from Barcelona. Hopefully his body stays in good shape 🤞

It really wasn’t such a high level. De Minaur played worst than Barcelona, did more unforced errors and didn’t put enough pressure. Nadal just played better than him, but both played at a medium level.

De Minaur is a good player. For Rafa to come back and beat a player of De Minaur's quality is a testament to his grit, determination and passion for this sport and his craft. A huge win for Rafa. I personally thought Arnaldi would be a dangerous matchup for him early in the tournament. Medvedev historically hasn’t been great at Madrid even though on paper it should suit his game decently well, and he looked very frustrated at his practices as well. Arnaldi has been on a solid stretch of form and his game translates well to the clay.
When Arnaldi was up 4-2 early I felt like, “yeah, Medvedev’s in trouble.” But he dug himself out using great defense and baseline ability, which is great to see. Still want to see more out of the serve though.

Apart from compromised movement due to the long chronic foot injury one major weapon that is clearly less effective compared to his younger days is his bread-and-butter shot, cross-court topspin forehand. This stroke used to be so highly effective particularly on clay and against his right handed opponents who had to deal with high bounce topspin coming deep to their backhand side. It would be less of a problem if his opponents happened to hit two-handed backhand but for anyone who had one-handed backhand it's was so difficult to parry the shots effectively thus opening themselves up for an attack or a killer shot next.
Nadal was still used that pretty effectively to win his last RG but since then both the injuries and likely age factor has sure hampered his play. Like most tennis fans, I also wish to see him do well at perhaps his last RG because his relentless determination, and style of play is, unlike that of most players on tour nowadays, is always good to watch.

I don’t get those moon balls from Rafa, even when he was in his prime. He puts himself in a defensive position more often than necessary. His amazing defensive skills, incredible forehand, and just pure talent is what has gotten him out of trouble in a lot of points. He’d get smoked by someone like Sinner.

I saw the full match before watching Shelton win 6-0 6-2 in 59 mins. Carby Banana was foolish to breadstick Bubbles in the opening set. After that, Bublé stopped playing games, remembered the Nagal upset at AO, and went to work. He used touch & feel to completely undo RCB all the while grunting in a mocking fashion. Top 20 for a reason.
