Funny thing is its actually a really good song, About a bountiful young lady named Erika the soldiers of war want to return to, All German soldiers weren't nazi's. Most were forced to fight or die
Many also just wanted to go on an adventure. Having absolutely no idea what they were going into. Back then most people went an entire lifetime without seeing more than their own local area. Commercial traveling was not a thing. Young guys talking with their friends about going and if they go then why shouldnt you? It was an entire different world back then. Seeing war movies from german pov starting to be produced is really great in my humble opinion :)
The Wehrmacht nonetheless committed many atrocities that are only recently being brought to light, so the whole notion that the common German soldier was separated from the atrocities of the SS is actually becoming less apparent. I still agree that many were drafted and forced to fight, but many of them nonetheless committed war crimes that in of itself are just as bad as the SS. I think this clearly showcases the obvious sympathy many Germans had at the time with the Nazi cause up until 1945.

What I find funny is that you want to take away the association of the song with the politics because you're a liberal. When the song was made by THE party.
The exact year of the song's origin is not known; often the date is given as "about 1930",[3] but this has never been substantiated. The song was originally published in 1938 by the publishing firm Carl Louis Oertel [de] in Großburgwedel, but it had been popular prior to the war.[4] the song is similar in terms of songs like blood on the risers and When Johnny Comes Marching Home soldiers songs as they are known as ISHOWSPEED heard German and saw a German flag and freaked because he taught it was racist but intern his ignorance and lack of understanding showed he was in fact the racist one the song isn't even about an Nazis its about soldiers wanting to return home to a beautiful woman and 2 the Erika in question can also be interpreted as a metaphor for Germany itself
Did people seriously forget the song “Erika” is talking about a lady named Erika and flowers, and that it was made way before Nazi Germany’s existence? Or are people just more dumb?
If you come close to Germany, it's best to come to Saarland. There you can travel to three different countries within half an hour: Germany, France, Luxembourg and Belgium. That's my tip for you.
So, for those too lazy to google some history....or even the freaking lyrics, here they are in English: I On the heath there blooms a little flower and it's called Erika! Eagerly a hundred thousand little bees swarm around Erika! For her heart is full of sweetness, a tender scent escapes her blossom-gown. On the heath there blooms a little flower and it's called Erika. II Back at home there lives a little maiden and she's called Erika! That girl is my faithful little darling and my joy, Erika! When the heather blooms in a reddish purple, I sing her this song in greeting. On the heath there blooms a little flower and she's called Erika! III In my room there also blooms a little flower and she's called Erika! Already in the grey of dawn as it does at dusk it looks at me, Erika! And then it seems to me, as if it's saying aloud: "Are you thinking of your little bride?" Back at home a maiden weeps for you and she's called Erika! The song DOES NOT AND NEVER HAS glorified the Nazi party. HOWEVER, some history for context: In January 1933, Hitler was appointed German chancellor. After coming to power, the Nazis established the Dachau concentration camp to detain political prisoners. By late 1938, Jews were banned from most public places in Germany. This song was written in 1938. So while the song is not a song about nazi soldiers, it was written in a time where Nazi rule was the norm. Take from that what you will. Its still a banger....Doesnt mean it supports intolerance. We can be better than those who live in hate, if we choose to be.
The song itself and the lyrics are completely harmless. The salut is actually from Ancient Rome. It both comes down to whether the current situation you are in is appropriate and what your thoughts and intentions are. Keep in mind that many people associate the song and/or salut with a person that is responsible for the death of over 11.000.000 (11 million) innocent people.
