Loved the song....what settings should I use (the sliders on the side for 'db' and also the setting with the line/curved bit)....I'm a novice, and the manual doesn't explain this at all!
Hi Rebecca, the button with the 'dB' is called the pad switch. When recording my voice or guitar I usually have it set to '0dB'. The '-10dB' setting is used when recording loud sound sources because it reduces the mic output by 10 decibels (makes it quieter). The switch with the line/curved bit is so that you can switch the low pass filter on and off. If you switch it to the straight line, the microphone will record what you play "as it hears it". If you engage the low pass filter (switching it to the curved bit) then it will cut off frequencies below a certain level. I think by the Origin the cutoff is 80 Hz - those frequencies are normally the very low ones associated with ambient room noise or a low rumble - I usually have the filter switched on (the curved line). I hope that helps!
Rebecca Balzani Barrow - Violinist UK IF you have a thick melody or a rich voice in the lower eq range, i would keep the EQ boost off and just apply eq in your preferred DAW
This is the single best demo of the Atston Origin on RUclips. I've got to play around with it for a few months before I'm ready to declare my full conversion, but from listening to all the tracks I can find I think the Origin may become the new workhorse of modern studios. It sounds like a processed Neumann TLM 103.
It's 4th of July 2022 and I just discovered this video. I did a search for the Origin bc it's on sale and all I can say is this song is fantastic. So is the one you played in the demo for the Spirit. It followed this one. Please take this as a huge compliment, bc that's the way it's intended, your songs make me feel like it's mid-90s Lilith Fair and I love them.
Finally found a woman singing with this mic!!! Searching for a new microphone and now I've noticed that it's mainly men that are reviewing microphones haha. And on top of that, great song!
Beautiful voice and song! Just did a comparison of several mics the other day in a music store. I loved both the Aston Origin and Spirit - two remarkable mics for the money. For my male voice the Origin had a bit more clarity and presence. Your recordings sound great to me.
I've recorded with Brauner (Phantom), AKG (C 414), Ear Trumpet Lab (Chantelle), and Neumann (KM 184 - small membrane, stereo pair) Rode (NT5 - small membrane, stereo pair) mics. Each one has its own uses and color and pros and cons, which makes it tough to choose when you're on a budget. ;-) Although Neuman mics are awesome, I feel like they didn't support the sound I'm looking for right now. But my projects and preferences are always changing. ;-) The Aston Spirit gave me what I needed for a specific project, so I'm glad I found it.
He has very natural sound and catches many nice details but without harshes and sibiliants . It is stuuuuning quality for that price really in my opinion after listening few reviews online
Excellent performance and pretty impressive sound quality given that there was no processing other than capturing the audio through micpres and converters. Absolutely beautiful voice and song. I'm going to get the mic, but an instant fan of the singer. 2 Thumbs up.

Great song, great voice! I am considering adding the Aston to my locker. You can never have too many mics. Each artist that walks into the studio has a unique sound. Finding the best mic for them is my job. Sometimes it's a $300 mic other times a $3000 mic. As a recording engineer I would love to hear this mixed down. :-) EDIT: Found it, planning to purchase the CD... Cheers, Greg

Hi Greg Allen ! Very nice sound! Thanks for sharing the link. I'd love to hear your opinion on the final mix of this song if you'd have time: stephanieforryan.bandcamp.com/track/closer-than-before
Stephanie, I really enjoyed the mix as it was. As you know music is subjective. Every engineer might tweak things a little differently so it really depends on whether or not you like it and that it's what you are trying to artistically express. :-) facebook.com/biospherestudios/
Stephanie Forryan this made me happy to hear. That mic matches your voice so well. Well done on the tune, but also demonstrating the Origin in a typical singer/songwriter situation.
Hey I just wanted to ask would you say it's a good singing mic, with effects ?I'm an artist that makes music but only with vocals and no beats ... By the way loved your voice
Hi billy Bills, yes I think it is a good mic, also for FX. The recordings have a lot of clarity and definition. It's not as full-bodied as some mics out there (the Spirit has a bit more in that department). But I think this Origin mic brings out vocal details quite nicely, especially at that price point.
Hi Felipe, this microphone would work for live streams and captures the voice very clearly - so if you like the way it sounds it would definitely be worth trying. Just keep in mind that it is not a USB microphone, so you would also need an audio interface to connect it to your computer.
I'm having a little trouble with this mic. I'm getting this buzz sound when I record my vocals. My voice is slightly deep and a little raspy so I thought it was just me but I asked my gf to test her vocals and I heard the same sound. The buzz was a lot less noticeable but I realized that it has to be the mic. I have it connected to a basic Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 and then to Protools. Do you think it's my signal chain? What do you suggest?
There are many possible sources of noise, only one of which is the microphone, so it's worth checking the entire signal chain. It could be due to faulty cables/connections or a lack of shielding, an electrical issue (some electricity "hums"), ground loops, incorrect gain levels, room noises that you are unaware of but the microphone is picking up (monitors, lights, refrigerators, fans, AC units, etc. can all be possible noise sources), DAW settings...
I Love this, and the song is amazing and the mic is amazing. I'm getting this mic. May I ask what software do you use to get your audio on youtube. I am trying to start my youtube channel but have no idea how to get the audio on there and its sounds crisp like this
Hi Latifah! I think this is a great mic for the price class - it captures a lot of detail and clarity. I record and mix the audio in Logic Pro, then export that .wav file and import it into my video editing program (Adobe Premiere). But you can pretty much use any software. Are you using a mac or a PC?
The mount is in the mic itself - the stand screws directly into the bottom without the need for a shockmount. If your mic stand is stable enough and you don't bump it, you might find you don't need a shockmount. I use it both with and without a shockmount, depending on the situation.
@@StephanieForryan Oh, I didn't even realize that it had a screwable bottom! That's pretty handy. Thanks very much for your awesome clear demo, and for your replies :)
Hi David! You don't necessarily need a shock mount - the mic itself has fittings that screw directly to the mic stand. That's what I do most of the time and that's what I did in this video.
Is this song on Apple Music? I love it. From one singer to another, this is a great song. Truly. I have the origin mic so guess I need to put it to good use again.

Hi +ShadowsFate! I'm not sure I completely understand your question. Do you want to know how the mic is attached to the mic stand? If so: It is possible to screw the stand directly into the bottom of the mic, no other equipment needed.
i came here for the mic, but i loved the song. The Aston sounded great, great job recording it. Does the video contain the raw audio files? Thanks for the video!
Hi +ART D! All of the audio files completely dry, simply recorded with the preamp from my interface - no additional hardware, FX, or mastering. All I did when I mixed this was adjust the volume of the individual tracks.
Wasn't planning on buying another mic, started doing some research came across this demo and yup bought the aston. Lol. After hearing it hear I thought it would sound good on my singers voice and yup sure did. However I also ended up using it on electric guitars too. Killer mic but also killer catchy song. Thanks for doing this video.
Stephanie Forryan the mic will get tons of use. In the process of tracking vocals for tracks with it. You should be getting some advertising money from aston. Lol.
Stephanie Forryan Yeah agreed. I'm not much of a singer but had just bought a mxl v69 for my singer a few months back, swapped the tube in it of course. And now it has become a paperweight. If you play electric at all try the aston on a guitar cab paired with a 57 off axis. Whoa! Especially for cleans it's awesome!
Hi David, I think it really depends on the sound you're going for. The "Origin" seems to be more "in your face", than the "Spirit" so that might be good for a dark male voice to bring it to the front of the mix.
Hi Nicholas, I normally pan backing vocals. I can't remember exactly what I did here since it was a while back now, but when I mixed the song, it's possible I may have used panning to help people hear the individual tracks a bit better.
Hi Ali, mic's are always a matter of taste and it depends on what you want to record. I can't say much about the other two mics, but the Origin has served me well.
aww yeah... i saw lots of hype from aston at namm... hearing it now is disappointing, its high frequencies are harsh and brittle like those of cheap chinese mics. Damn, and they look so cool too. you may want to consider modding it. Great vocals and song btw :)
Hi +AJ Afterparty! What mics do you use for your productions? And if you were able to mod this mic, what would you do? BTW: Thanks for the kind words! :-)
+Stephanie Forryan wait, the vocal was raw right? Or did you add EQ? I use a Neumann u87 =p. If you want to send me an email I can send you a list of places that can mod it. I would definitely change the capsule to an rk12 if you like crispy highs or a rk47 if you like darker tones. Ajafterparty at gmail dot com
Ooooooh, fancy schmancy! I love me a good Neumann! ;-) Thanks for the address, I'll get in touch. And yes, the vocal is raw, no EQ. As a side note: Have you heard the Aston Spirit mic? If so, what did you think of that one? I did a similar test and thought that one suited my purposes better than the Origin.
After hearing it hear I thought it would sound good on my singers voice and yup sure did. However I also ended up using it on electric guitars too. Killer mic but also killer catchy song. Thanks for doing this video.
Hi Rick! Glad you ended up liking the mic - I hope you get a lot of use out of it! Thanks for the kind words. :-)
Stephanie Forryan the mic will get tons of use. In the process of tracking vocals for tracks with it. You should be getting some advertising money from aston. Lol.
It's always great to find another trusty piece of gear - and it's always a lot of fun testing mics!
Thanks for the tip - I'm always looking for new ideas!
The song is quote good!
Thank you, Javier! :-)
keep doing u
Did you use a mic pre or just apogee built in mic pres?
Hi Corey, I just used the built-in apogee pre.
you are so great songer, and you are beautiful, greeting from Serbia :D
Thanks, CairouzG! Greetings to Serbia. :-)
Zeiţă!
Hello Stephanie, i saw you used the spirit because of your highs.. - would you think the origin would be fine for a guy with a dark voice?
Hi David, I think it really depends on the sound you're going for. The "Origin" seems to be more "in your face", than the "Spirit" so that might be good for a dark male voice to bring it to the front of the mix.
you have talent.. would love to work with you some day
Thanks Jasper. :-)

For the vocals in the back do you pan them ?
Hi Nicholas, I normally pan backing vocals. I can't remember exactly what I did here since it was a while back now, but when I mixed the song, it's possible I may have used panning to help people hear the individual tracks a bit better.
Nice mic but what a beautiful song!
sehr süss
Danke!
Well, well. My hesitation of wether to buy this mic is now gone. :)
Glad I could help. ;-)
just make sure you dont vape into it or around it too heavy. learning from that mistake now
Nice song. A little Ani in there?
Wow, thanks! If Ani made it in there then that makes me happy! :-D
Great
sE Electronics X1 Vocal Pack
Blue Mic Bluebird
Aston Origin
which one?
Hi Ali,
mic's are always a matter of taste and it depends on what you want to record. I can't say much about the other two mics, but the Origin has served me well.
Hahaha I came for the mic. But the song its amazing.
Thank you! :-D
nice! i
Thank you. :-)
Holy shiit.,,...
aww yeah... i saw lots of hype from aston at namm... hearing it now is disappointing, its high frequencies are harsh and brittle like those of cheap chinese mics.
I did a similar test and thought that one suited my purposes better than the Origin.
great voice!Get a band and play this in America you'll be big
dude she could make it huge wow
HOLY FUCKkkkkkk

Thank you! I don't have time for any collaborations at the moment but I'd like to hear what you do - can you post a link to your music?
