Vida seemed like a nice guy. Ive never seen his face until just now. Been a A's fan since 71. Watched Vida pitch in those 3 years. RIP Vida hope theres baseball in heaven .
I was an 11 year old Yankee fan when this guy came on the scene and I was mesmerized by him. back then there were limited ways of seeing things (no cable tv or internet) so when you got an opportunity to see a game it was really special. I remember the ‘71 all star game and my brother had a copy of Sport magazine with him on the cover and I would just stare at that picture over and over again. even though I was a Yankee fan I got one of those mesh A’s baseball caps (I forget who made them) because I wanted to look like him. I was so sad when I heard he had passed. still love u Vida.
Wow this is adorable. This was a 17-game winner - (by the All Star break!) (most ever is 18). Vida's high school football stats are legendary: he was a quarterback (to no great surprise) who in a twelve-game season threw 37 TD passes for 3400+ yards while also rushing for 1600 yards himself on 155 carries. As a high school pitcher Vida once struck out 22 in a 7-inning game (somebody got on via a dropped 3rd strike). A problem was that whoever caught for the team when Vida pitched couldn't play again for 3 or 4 days. This is awesome footage from when he was quite young. Thanks for putting it on RUclips
SeattleHoarse I grew up with Vida and my brother was catcher for Vida since he was about 12 years old. He caught Vida in high school and my mother had to put my brother hand on ice after catching Vida. His hand would be so swollen. My brother also taught Vida a lot about pitching in his early years of playing baseball. My cousin Jesse Hudson also a lefty pitched on the same high school team and threw just as hard. Jesse played for the Yankees but didn't last as Vida did because he pitched his arm away play ball as a teenager with grown men on these so-called semi-pro teams in Louisiana. Also, Jesse was the wide receiver for many of Vida's long touchdown passes. My school had so much talent at that time it was unbelievable. I'm so hurt that my brother and friend has passed. R.I.P Vida Blue. One of baseball greatest pitchers.
Airdate was actually 8/16/1971. Vida Blue pitched against the Yankees the previous day (Sunday Aug. 15) and gained the victory. Aug. 16 was a day off, and the A's went to Washington the next day for a game against the Senators.
This interview could not have aired on Jan. 16, 1971 as stated in description above. The Time Magazine cover of Vida Blue was the Aug. 23, 1971 issue. The Oakland A's players of that era had very colorful names, both figuratively and literally. Vida was one of two A's pitchers with "Blue" in his name.
Vida's talking about winning 30 games and mentioned the All-Star Game earlier in the season, so it was 1971. And they talk about a game he pitched at Yankee Stadium "last night." He pitched twice at Yankee Stadium in 1971: June 1 and Aug. 15, so this must've been taped on Aug. 16, 1971.
@@NJ-Baseball Yes, and in those days, the weekly news magazines were dated a week ahead (to make them look very current). Vida was on the cover of the Aug. 23, 1971 issue of Time Magazine which is mentioned in the interview.
Vida Blue was a very good pitcher. He had one monster year in 1971. However, he only had three 20-win seasons and 209 career wins. He just was not good enough for long enough. As a comparison, his former A's teammate, HOFer Catfish Hunter, had five consecutive 20-win seasons with 242 career wins.
August is correct. Per Baseball-Reference, Vida started and pitched a complete game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on August 15th. Therefore hw was already in New York to tape the show.
have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other videos.

It was a real pleasure to see my childhood hero in this interview. Rest in heaven Vida Blue.
Glad I brightened your day. I must say, I really enjoy doing this program 🙂
I met Vida a couple times and knew where he was raised. Great guy.
MLB today needs more guys like him.

So soft spoken, and so handsome
And Vida Blue ain't so bad either.
It's too bad The Dick Cavett Show isn't on anymore. It was one of the highlights to being famous.
One of The Greatest Pitchers of His Time. 5x 20 game winner and a Dynamite Human Being
Oakland had it all - pitching (Blue, Hunter, Holtzman, Fingers) power (Rudi, Bando, Jackson, Tenace) and speed (North, Campy, Jackson again)
Blue won 20 games three times. It was his teammate Catfish Hunter that won 20 games five times...
I love that he is just a normal person, you can tell he is shy but dick does a good job of bringing him out of his shell

Could throw with either arm as well.

John Blue Moon Odom. Jim Catfish Hunter. Charlie Finley came up with most of the As' nicknames.
Agreed-wrong date

Why isn’t he in the Hall of Fame?

RIP🙏🏻
Cavett cracks himself up
Why is the segment truncated?
I think this aired August 16, 1971 not January 16.
Makes sense, as Vida Blue was born July 28th, 1949, so he would've only been 21 if the show aired in January.

what's with the weird face when he shakes Dick's hand? Edit: Cos the poor guy was so nervous. He seems like an awesome dude.
Do you think he has social anxiety?
Just a young boy from the south. No anxiety!
I always thought he had a cool ass Name.
He's still such a chill guy in 2021...hope he doesn't take the injection like Hank Aaron & many other retired athletes have..
What injection
