What's odd is that I didn't particularly like the song when it was used in the show, but listening to it on its own, I'm thinking this was because the visuals were over-edited. I quite like it here with a static image! (and it's a cute one too)

because it is the image of the school trip.
in the manga, Eva could not leave the school because of the curse and chachamaru stayed with her, so, being a ghost, she did not go to the school trip either.

Well, I think they fucked up the ending in the manga too, by rushing the ending, saving Negi's father in the end without any story arc and he never confesses who he chose to be his partner.
I think they jumped the shark with the magical world arc, piling subplots upon subplots, building up to a climax that never really paid off, IMHO!

Nah, real world politics were at play in the rushed manga ending. IIRC he ended early because his rights to his works were under threat from a law being proposed at the time so he ended the series early to fight that proposed law.
