Yoel is the perfect example of why Communist dictators (and dictators in general) want to control every aspect of their subjects lives. Holding them in a state of ignorance means they'll never know otherwise, and just accept how things are. With your discussions, and being shown the truth via the documentary, Yoel was able to reevaluate what he was always told, having had hes eyes opened and world knowledge expanded, changing his perspective on Communism, and the Cuban government.
Another great video. Marie, you should make a long-form documentary on Cuba, it's history, and how Communism vs Capitalism affects nations. You're really good at your editing videos and presenting facts and data on subjects, such as when you talk about Cuba's past and present.

All of your videos, especially this one, make me tear up. My husband is from rural China, and your story reminds me of ours. Nobody should blame you, Yoel, for being a Communist in the past. From hearing my husband’s stories, I know that the level of constant Communist brainwashing is strong. Like you, my husband also had never been exposed to anything different. When he came to the U.S., his eyes were also opened to the free world around him. Thanks for sharing your story. Americans need to hear it.

My very liberal Episcopal church decided to have a missions trip to Cuba about 4 years ago. They were asking members to donate simple and practical things, like bottles of Tylenol and aspirin. So while they were busy collecting, because people love donating if it makes them feel special...I asked the priest why they were donating aspirin. He said that they don't have aspirin. So I said that should be his first clue as to how bad it is if they can't even get a $2 bottle of aspirin.
If you can't even get the simple things, then it isn't that good to live there.
Oh, and Yoel being a communist, he was raised in that without another view of the world. It's not how you start out, it is how you end that matters.

I love hearing stories of anyone who came to this country the right way, went through the process, and assimilated to our country. If you guys stop making content, I don't know what I'd do... both of you are the exact reason why I love this country so much, even though I was born and raised here. Thank you guys for sharing on this topic. God has blessed you with a very unique opportunity to help a younger generation in America who has been intentionally and methodically lied to about Communisim, Marxism, Socialism. Many, if not most, Americans under 30 have no idea of the truth. And, as Jordan Peterson observes, even those who do will say "yes, but it hasn't bee done "right" yet.. give us the power and we'll enact Communism properly and usher in the promised Utopia"... It is the height of narcissism!
Castro died worth $900,000. Chavez, over 1 Billion!... Both lied to gain power and then killed those who helped them. In the 20th century over 100,000,000 people died, because "if you're gonna make an omelet you must crack a few eggs".

Even debates in school have more preparation and they don't get taken seriously. Neither should Peterson if he hasn't done the proper research.

My parents are Chinese and immigrated legally to Canada in order to have me, their second child (China's one-child policy was still in effect at this time). Growing up, my parents worked extremely long hours and a lot of their down time was spent taking care of my grandmother who suffered from severe Alzheimer's. So, as a result, most of my political views growing up were derived from Canadian public school and TV. This resulted in an overwhelmingly leftist view of the world, to the point where I even told my mom that all the issues of China were simply because 'that's not real communism'. It's an embarrassing memory to this day.
Belief in large-scale communism is reliant on lack of historical and cultural knowledge. It requires one to have no understanding of economics or human behaviour. Take a look at any large supermarket parking lot and you can see why communism never works. The simplest, most basic requirement of communism is that people won't take more than they need, and will provide for others. How often do you encounter a supermarket with no errant carts strewn along the lot? And that's even with someone else being paid to collect the ones left out. If a small locality can't even properly take and return carts on their own, how can anyone believe we could just operate entire nations based on 'good-will' alone?
Communism without leadership doesn't work, and communism with leadership is just tyrannical authoritarianism. Never heard of a poor communist leader, isn't that strange?

He made bomb Fried chicken and Dumplings and was a super nice old man from what I remember. But my friends mom said one of her biggest regrets in life was during the "Chinese Revolution" she turned him in to the party for re-education. He was beaten and reeducated for about a year in there and at the time she was proud of what she did. After he came home they never talked about it and life moved on. But when she moved to California and she brought him with her they talked about it and he forgave her. To me that's nuts I can't imagine turning in my parents for re-education knowing that they are going to be tortured if not converted or killed.

I am so glad Joel said he recognizes what the USA does as well in small doses. Mostly people from other communistic country recognizes that the USA is going down a very ugly path toward socialism 😢

These two really need to speak on college campuses. College kids would learn more about this sh!t than their professors with an agenda. God bless both of you

Can I say Yoel looks a bit like Vladimir Lenin?

How do I know a free society is better than a dictatorship? Because you can say things like, "I'm not happy with this government and the we the people need to change our leadership", and no one will come kick in your door. You can just say you hate the government and they can do anything about it.

I don’t doubt his story because if all you hear is what the government tells you, you don’t have any way to know it is not true. I am currently reading a history of Russia where this played out over and over. We have gone from Radio Free Europe in the 40s to internet warriors getting the word out. I love his story and that you found each other!

My sister has been a communist since college 40 years ago. Her professors were communists. My family is from Texas but there are American communists here in universities & large cities, especially Austin. They do not understand capitalism. They just call it fascism & refuse to debate. All but one of my college professors were communists & they talked about that more than the subjects we were supposed to study.

_"They do not understand capitalism. They just call it fascism & refuse to debate. "_
Buy your sister a gift, 'the Philosophy of Fascism' by Mario Palmieri. If she actually reads it, she might finally understand that Fascism was not only anti-capitalist, but also a branch of Socialism via National Syndicalism.

Examples like this are why I would trade immigrants for Americans who hate their own country! I'd love to see a permanent exchange. Trade one woke liberal for a hard working Cuban who just wants the freedom to build their dream here in the USA

The sad part about Cuba is there's enough Rich Cubans and companies in the United States willing to invest in Cuba the country would change almost overnight.

Forever grateful to my mom for walking me through the communist lies as a child.
There is always someone more “equal” than others. That’s the truth.
In china it’s true that if you fall down in the streets people will not help you. I have seen the videos.
Yoel in glad you now see the light of freedom.
