    The reason Ross can't deal with failure is because his parents told him his entire life he was perfect. Monica works harder when things don't go her way because he parents treated her like she wasn't good enough. Ross believes he is perfect and when he makes mistakes he overreacts because he believes he cannot make a mistake.

    Ross and Monica's parents kind of suck. Monica is very clearly second best to Ross in their eyes. But even as the "favorite" Ross was traumatized by his parents for being different in any way. That kind of treatment in early childhood can be nearly impossible to fully recover from. And let's not forget that even his friends undermine his career, a huge part of his identity, for most of the show. That takes a toll on a person. It's really great to see that he and Monica don't let their childhood ruin their relationship with each other.

If Carol had cheated with a man and then had the man be theirs child’s father and not just step father nobody would require him to be understanding. I’ve always felt bad for Ross. His parents expected too much of him so when he failed he felt terrible about himself, all of his friends made fun of his job, which he loved a lot, his first wife went behind his back and cheated on him with someone else and didn’t even bother to tell him the truth, Carol and Susan got to have full custody (basically) of Ben, and he just wanted to start a happy family. He was treated badly throughout the show. I think the only person who really understood him was Phoebe.

      I’m kinda late but I agree completely. Ross was probably the most tormented friend (Chandler a close second), and all the other friends made it seem like they were too good for him. Carol not only cheated on him, but lied about her sexuality for who knows how long, and then acted like a complete bitch afterwards. I hate how characters like Phoebe, and Joey can act horribly and get away with it because “They don’t know any better.”

      Carol never went behind his back. She didn't know she was a lesbian and it was Ross who suggested the 3 some. He was THERE. She left upon finding out her own sexuality. But, I'm sure Carol's trauma of denying who she is to fit into a world where it's not ok to be who she is and her family rejects her doesn't compare to Ross having a family who loves him. There's no reason for Ross to have custody. A baby needs his mom and a 2 parent household will always be better than 1. There was no point where Ross was denied seeing his kid nor did he want custody.

I am literally Ross right now, the same insecurity, the same trauma from relationship with my parents, also the same intelligence, and similar profession ( I'm a Mechanical Engineering student ), and even I'm a hopeless romantic. Basically I have a crush on a girl in my college, and I have dreamt my entire future with her, and we are in the same friend circle. I have a hope for promising future, and I do want a relationship with a caring and kind girl, but I just can't get myself to date, as it could be a possible distraction and point of singularity in my later life. I don't want to be the anxious Ross betrayed by my Carol, and so I feel fearful of any relationship right now.

      @@mechanicalengineerturbo I've been there. No matter how hard you try life seems to be, well, not going anywhere, stagnant. For me, most frustrating was to digest the fact that a big chunk of my life was unproductive. A well settled life was a distant dream (it still is, to some extent). It would have been nice to have someone to hold my hands but I was alone. But you know what, life sorts these problems out by itself. Just hang in there, it will get better. Every relationship will be re-established and you will find new ones too. It was same for me. It's same for everyone I guess.

    Ross has good sides, he's genuinely a good friend and a good brother for Monica, which is sweet considering the parenting favoritism. However, it's hard to get over how problematic he is. He's a good friend but terrible relationship material. If it weren't for fan service, I don't think he would have ended up with Rachel, they still had ridiculous arguments and possessive/jealousy issues right until the end. They kept bringing the worst in each other in all fairness.

      Yeah, I am like kind of annoyed by Ross from time to time, more than the other characters. They all suffer from toxic masculinity, but I think Ross is the one that most acts on it (ben playing with a barbie and the male nanny). Although I think his actions are completely justified by toxic youth experiences and ongoing teasing about femininity. Also he is kind of selfabsorbed from time to time. I think the "we were on a break"-thing was also more fair on his side, but he should've read the letter that Rachel wrote. Yes, it was long, yes, it was in the middle of the night, but I think it's also completely justified that Rachel got the idea that Ross didn't really want to work for their relationship. Yes, he is caring and thoughtful, but think about the times that he didn't care to stuck up to his parents when they treated Monica unfairly.
      I think he is not really great, but I also feel bad for him. He got shit in his youth and toxic masculinity, which didn't really improve during his character development.
      Ofcourse this is my opinion and vision on it all. If you want correct me if you think I'm wrong

    You forget that when Ross was trying to move on from Rachel. Mosly in the early seasons, Rachel ends up being jealous and want to be with Ross. She starts being mopy and sad about it then all the other friends start joining her side. It is very destructive and alienateing for Ross's partners. If it wasn't for Rachel, Ross would properly would of moved on with Emily.

      not truth at all, he never loved Emily. Rachel didn't get to tell him she loved him before the wedding day, she went there and said "Good Luck", and he said her name at the altar even though she did not went on to confess her love for him. Also, she started to love him right after her clueless self were told he was in love with her, by Chandler, while he was in China. So when she fell in love with him, she did not know he was already with Julie. She met Julie after feeling in love with him. He never cared about Mona, neither to Bonnie, he was a terrible boyfriend to them and ultimately broke up the relationships on his own "destructive and alienating" behaviours, not Rachel's. In fact Rachel did NOTHING about them, she was pairing with other men or happily alone when he was with them. And, she even went on to support him and help him with some girls along the seasons when they were set as only friends,
      remember how she helped him shop clothes for dating, or that amazing nice thing she did for the Pizza girl he was flirting with? Rachel secretly ran to her and gave her his number and told her how amazing of a guy he was so he can have a shot. She was an amazing friend. You should check the Take on Rachel, the Real protagonist video, and try to understand why she could not be with him for so long even thought she loved him very much. She was not wrong at all.

      Chandler was my favorite character. His *journey* was the biggest. Coming from a guy who was afraid to commit in serious relationships and hiding his uncomfortable attitude and insecurity towards women with sarcasm and jokes. Then he was turning into this guy who was capable of doing opposite of everything in the above. Becoming a loving husband, father and having a career in a job that he loves. Also his growth was just the biggest and most consistent over the ten season run.
      You do have to *admit* that Ross's character was great since the very first episode, similar to that of Joey's, but the writers were deconstructing his character too much by forcing him to go through all these divorces and failed relationships that was basically holding back any mature growth for him to succeed. Nevertheless, the final episode was fully *justified* with him ending up with Rachel for good. They were meant to be.

    I think this video romanticizes the Ross/Rachel couple a little bit... putting aside the fact that the relationship brought out the WORSE aspects of Ross's personality along with the good (like his paranoia, jealousy, insecurity and control issues, which yeah are a part of all his relationships in general because of his issues but are especially prominent with rachel) there's the simple fact that they just don't really gel together well. They have zero common interests or anything unique about their interactions other than 'generic couple', they don't bring the best in each other (like Chandler and Monica do) and they have waaay too many arguments and drama, sometimes it feels like they spent 50% of their time together being unhappy and breaking up.
    imo the healthiest relationship they had was raising Emma while still being completely platonic friends, so I was disappointed they ended up together eventually, it felt like a step backwards for their character development
    (that being said I still love Ross to bits lmao. David Schwimmer was the best and funniest actor of the whole group)

      I think the show itself romanticizes their relationship big time, so it's not surprising that an analysis of their actions on the show would do similar... especially on a video about Ross, who is in fact, a hopeless romantic. Whether or not their relationship was perfect, it's still the main plotline for both of them from the beginning to the end of the show.

I'm now in my twenties and have just rewatched the series again and have a new found appreciation for it and love the way it treats the ups and downs of young adult life through characters with flaws, quirks and unique upbringings. I respect that you've taken the time out to analyse each character and give us a completely different perspective to what they're normally know for (Monica- obsessive, Ross- goofy, Joey- dumb, phoebe- quirky etc). Looking forwards to what you say about Joey, I've always thought he was one of the most loyal, caring friends but had the worst character progression written for him. New subscriber!

    I love the character of Ross because he’s kind, intelligent, and usually tries to take the high road. He constantly needs to prove he’s right because he IS right. On the other hand, he’s the embodiment of repression and perfectionism. He suppresses a lot of emotions in order to do the responsible thing instead of working through them organically.
    On another note, I wonder WHY he fell in love with Rachel as a high schooler in the first place. They clearly had nothing in common, and it seems like he just liked her because she was hot and popular. That’s a pretty shallow reason to put someone on a pedestal.

    • @christit07
      @christit07 5 лет назад +5

      hollywoodshopaholic having nothing in common is one of the best things about being in a relationship. You’re able to discover and adapt to the new changes that your partner offers that you never really cared for. It’s thrilling, I find it boring when you’re with someone who enjoys everything you do. I rather grow with someone and create memories that you never thought would happen and grow fond of. Ofc everyone has their own idea of a perfect relationship. I guess that’s why I love Ross and Rachel, their relationship wasn’t perfect and it had so many ups and downs and that’s how relationships are in real life. Though I do wish the writers didn’t make Ross and Rachel go through so much to get to the conclusion. Especially since they wanted Ross to originally go to Paris and fall in love with Rachel again, I rather see that then that whole Joey and Rachel thing.

    okay i take issue with the whole "ross cant handle rachel having a career". first of all, mark ADMITTED he was trying to get with rachel. so thats not paranoia as much as hyperawareness (unagi as ross would put it). he knew something was up and as soon as ross and rachel broke up mark made a pass at rachel. ross was fine with her having a career but rachel was neglectful of him. if the tables were turned and ross was spending a lot of time with a female colleague who was clearly attracted to him and he kicked rachel out of his job and proceeded to have dinner with the female colleague on his anniversary rachel wouldve been just as right to dump him.
    secondly, rachel was neglecting their relationship. according to ross they were having a relationship over the answering machine and rachels only defense was "i like my job! im good at it." she didnt deny that ross was telling the truth. ross also loves his job but he makes time to be a caring boyfriend and rachel simply doesnt do the same for him. ross is right to be upset especially when mark shows up at rachels apartment and she doesnt kick him out the way she kicked out ross from her job. if she was going to draw a line for her personal and work life she needs to enforce it on both ends but she didn't do that with mark and that was highly inappropriate. she was literally having dinner with another man on HER ANNIVERSARY WITH ROSS!

    I always kinda hated Ross as a character cos he was really whiny and entitled and had offensive hang-ups about gender and sexuality. I don't think his 'unrequited love' for Rachel made him more sympathetic - if anything, it made him more shallow and creepy, because he was obsessed with a girl for decades sheerly because of how she looked. I think the whole Ross making fun of lesbians is an interesting subject. I really don't think he was making fun of lesbians, I think he was mostly trying to make fun of Susan because of the grudge he holds against her, because even though he's not in love with Carol anymore he still loves her so it's easier to take it out on the other person. But still, when it really matters, he's there for them. We see him learning to co-parent not only with his exwife but also with her new wife. Nowadays a lot of this stuff, especially on TV, ends in custody issues. Let's not forget it was the 90's, the LGBT community was not so outspoken and present in media as now. At the same time, people had a thicker skin. He makes comments to his friends. I do that all the time, we all have those characteristics the others are mean about, in private, with people we know and love and trust. If Ross didn't trust Susan, would he leave his child with her so easily?
    On a more personal note, I never liked how they all made fun of his job and I get his frustration with it. As a person who's trying to get a scientific PhD, I get how difficult it is to make your friends and family appreciate this. Half of them think is boring shit or don't have the patience or will to try to understand it, the other half may acknowledge that it's worthy but don't get how a person can be so passionate about it as you have to be to do the kind of sacrifices you do for a PhD. Funniest thing, other characters in Friends do those sacrifices, but for some reason they're not made fun of. Maybe Ross's job is Susan's homosexuality. I don't know, he almost never was my favorite character (except when he went full science, cause he nailed it, especially when admitting to Phoebe that nothing he knows is 100% sure, that's probably one of the basis of certain sciences, like biology. If we talk about physics that could change) but I didn't hate them as much as other people. I understood, even as young as I was, why he was the way he was, and I accepted that, as a person, he was as valid and real as any of the other Friends.

    I understand where people come from when they dislike him,but its so annoying when they say «hes the worst” and call him a homophobe and stuff when all the friends clearly had many problematic beliefs.Even chandler,everyones favourite,had said and done many bad things but hes forgiven in contrast to ross.Yes ,ross has many flaws, but i like that about him and i find him extremely funny and under appreciated

    • @yingyang2838
      @yingyang2838 5 лет назад +1

      Exactly! Everyone seems to have their blinders on when it comes to criticising the other friend's problematic aspects but dogpile on ross because it's easy to. Candler's treatment of his father always rubbed me the wrong way and the way he dealt with his problems in relationships was childish and shitty. Joe's attitude towards his sister getting pregnant shows how possessive men can be with sisters/relatives who are female. All friends have this weird attitude towards feminine aspects in men and the men perpetuate that in return. if you're going to criticise this show from a modern aspect than apply it to all characters.

    I was really interested to see how you were going to interpret his character. I was always surprised that Ross, with so many of his flaws, seems to have the most significant romantic relationships out of all the friends (characterizing significant relationships as lasting more than one or two episodes). I'm looking forward to your analysis of Joey. As much as he tends to be remembered by being kind of dumb and being good with women, I've honestly always thought of him as the most emotionally generous and forgiving of all the friends when it really counts.

    • @Writer6
      @Writer6 6 лет назад

      I agree! While Joey's probably the least intelligent character out of the six of them, I've really come to think of him as having the biggest heart, and being the most loving character on the show. :)

      Akabubi for me I don’t notice these subtleties in Friends because they’re spelled out so slowly over the course of a series, and often serious issues are portrayed alongside a laugh-track, such as Ross being shamed for playing with “girl stuff” as a kid. Granted I’ve only been through the series once, but it makes a lot of sense that Ross being neurotic and intolerant a lot of the time is a natural coping mechanism for a life of shame and failure. It’s certainly NOT an excuse, I’m still not a Ross fan, but it makes him a more interesting character.

    I think a good subject for Joey's video would be how difficult it is for him to acept change. He acts as if everything in his life was falling apart when his friends start to settle down. He is the one who ended where he started. Even if he never wanted things to change to begin with.

    Well done for actually nailing the character of Ross! So, so many people online only see the one side of Ross and berate him for being possessive, controlling and jealous without seeing underlying reasons why, how he admits to these flaws and how he works to overcome them.

    This was a very tricky video to do. I think Ross used to be my favourite friend, however looking at him from a more detached modern perspective made his character seem a bit mean-spirited at times to me. But you really managed to bring out and contextualise the humanity of his character. These Friends vids are superb wells of empathy.

    Ross will always be my favorite character on the show. He's the one who had the most growth mentally and emotionally besides maybe Rachel. And he was put through the ringer at every point, but somehow in the end he made it through. In my eyes he's easily the most sympathetic character in the show

    I've always thought Ross and Monica are quite similar in some ways and I know a lot of people think Monica is bossy but she really just makes a fuss about small things and is resilient when it comes to dealing with real challenges.
    Ross, on the other hand, has sort of lived with the illusion that he's completely sorted and he's meant to have a perfect life because his parents were guilty of favouritism. This hurt both their children, but ironically Monica emerged as the stronger one because of that - because she was always the underdog. Ross had to deal with his drive for perfectionism and his deliberate suppression of his feelings.
    His journey in the series has been the hardest because we see him start out as an emotional, big hearted person who is later heartbroken and then follow a series of mistakes stemming from his impulsiveness.
    What I like about Ross and Rachel's story is that they both had to grow individually apart before they could be together. He becomes her close friend, they look after their child together and they both learn how to love each other while accepting each other's flaws.
    I think Ross has been treated unfairly quite a lot of times by Susan and Carol, Rachel and sometimes other people who misjudged him.
    The reason he likes to hang out with his sister and friends and the reason why he's eager to live an in apartment across from Monica's apartment is because he is comfortable around his sister and they both look out for each other. He IS right on several occasions and he cares about his friends, but his rigidity and obsession with masculinity can sometimes hurt him.

    I feel that Ross was the character from whom we saw the least character development... Regrettably, his final reunion with Rachel was so rushed out that we didn't get to see Ross exhibit any real change from his self-centredness, and Rachel's having to give up something important just to be with Ross again certainly didn't look good on him. Ross didn't get his chance to be selfless in love for a change.
    Which is a pity. I like Ross, I just wish we see more of him outgrowing some of his behavioural patterns.

      I actually think it's almost the opposite. At the start of thé series, Ross is the most adjusted of the group having a steady job and "happily" married. He actually regressed when his world shatters and spent the whole show to get his life back on track

  • @jessicav931

    I would like a analizys about how the type of person and decisions that took Rachel affected Ross. I noticed that you didnt touch the time where Ross was happy with the no-bald girl until Rachel got in the middle, even Phoeby had to tell her "I don't get it, you dont want him to be happy?". And after that she makes all this thing about the letter at 5 am, after him spent some difficult emotional hours breaking out with his gf and forcing him to accept all "blame" in a very complex situation. I think both of them are guided for ideas that were turning old in that time, like how great was the popular girl for date the nerd (notice how Leonard from the TBBT have the same problems than Ross, both are guys that gives all to his gf but in the second they present an aspect the gfs dont like the guys feelings are tagged as bad [like when the musician friend of Penny wanted to stay at her house]). Rachel want to become what she become at the end of the series but she started her life being a future"wife", a pretty face that will go shopping with her husband money. Deep down she had a sexist expectation about the men that want to date with her, basically she want them to be like her father (a doctor [status], money and full of masculinity). And is "funny" because Ross and Rachel start with old fashion visions about relashosips and learn to overcome this to be toghether. I think that over time they have to keep growing but i think that is also posible that they turn into a marriage like their parents, maybe more the Gellers way that the Greens. (Note: notice how Rachel, Monica and Ross have all this similar problems about marriage because they are all from the same social circle, they all growing up seen the women being stay at home mothers that live very well thanks to high status and "macho" husbands. Marriage Is a obsetion for both Gellers. And Monica and Rachel were pointing for the same "wife life", but as Monica was a awkard and fat girl that need external validation and Rachel was a popular girl tha wanted self aproval their ways turned very different one from the other). I know my english sucks in this comment, i don't have energy to check it.
