International Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru addresses opening of PNG SEZ Summit 2023

Under Minister Maru's guidance, the Department of International Trade and Investment has become the go-to resource for large foreign investments in Papua New Guinea. Serving as a comprehensive "one-stop shop," the department ensures a seamless process for investors seeking opportunities in our country. Minister Maru's appointment by Prime Minister Hon. James Marape in the previous year has brought a renewed focus on economic growth and international collaboration.
In September 2022, Prime Minister Marape and Minister Maru visited Tokyo, where they met with the esteemed Japanese think tank, Japan Development Institute (JDI). This collaboration resulted in the development of a new SEZ Master Plan for Papua New Guinea. Working alongside partners like the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the World Bank, JDI has been instrumental in supporting the creation of SEZs across our nation.

Can the Minister consider posting a table listing the activities allowed for indigenous people of PNG under the SEZ and it's benefits to the indigenous people of PNG. It will also be great to provide examples of supply chains and value chains for each industry or product traded in the SEZ. The selling or buying for each product at each point in the supply chain must also be highlighted to allow us the indigenous people of PNG (the natural resource owners) to make informed judgements. Expecting us to accept the SEZ as an economic growth miracle strategy based on a ceremonial speech by the Minister borders on patronising us and contempt.
