id say light is the very fabric of photography, and while composition matters to give order to your photo, to balance the parts and make them harmonious (or intentionally disharmonious), i totally agree that light can largely determine the effect the photo has on the viewer and how the subject is perceived. personally, light is often what fascinates me most in photography as well as painting, cinematography, archiceture etc.
Perfectly agree that light is underrated. Back to basics, without it there's no composition, so it's more essential than compositiion :) On the other hand, light is harder to dominate than composition and it's also intrinsical to photography, maybe that's why many underrate it. Or even don't see it (yes!) they just capture the "scene" or "moment". They see it as water to swimming. What I see is that when someone knows how to use light, be it natural or artificial, you have a difference. And it can be done simply by making the right exposure that privileges light - not as a simple task as it seems. I like you videos because they're far from the obvious, are more on the concepts. We need more videos like this. Thanks you!
If I recall well, photography is "painting with light"... which is very difficult to master. Harder than composition, which is also important. It is difficult because we are oftern limited with our tools (cameras). Not everyone can afford to have high end cameras. If you are shooting film that also has it's difficulties (I started shooting recently). So one must learn how to use the light he has on its disposal rather well, in order to capture composition correctly. Light is even more important if you want to do more than just capture a scene, like you mentioned to evoke a feeling. One good example as you shown is Fan Ho. I really like his approach to light (or shadows, depending how you see it). All in all, I agree with you, and I consider composition and subject pointless in photo if their purpose is ruined by bad lightning choice.
This is a wonderfully put together video and such an interesting topic to delve into. I definitely think lighting is one of if not the most important aspects of photography
Great video as usual! If I'm playing devil's advocate. I think your argument (and especially your examples) really just says that light is being used as a composition tool and if so composition really is the key and light is just assisting it.
Good topic. I can provide you with the reason for why lighting has become an underrated tool in photography: the transition from film to digital and digital technical improvements of ISO sensitivity in sensor technology. The misconception of most photographers as a consequence is that they can compensate bad light with high ISO in digital. Anyone forced to shoot within the limitations of low ISO (film) or certain digital formats (older sensors such as CCD sensors or Foveon sensors) with the same limitations will pay more attention to lighting.
I definitely agree with many of the points in this video. Lighting can create the composition where there wasn't one to begin with. Or it can improve or change already existing one. In fact, fascination with lighting and it's implications have drawn me into photography in the first place, shooting videos at night
Photometry is an underrated tool to make lighting better, I personally change photometry setting on my fuji xpro2 from multi to spot to make the lighting transition from dark to light a lot harsher, could you do a video about photometry settings?
Dear as you know photography meaning is painting with light. And recently I see the ICM which is a trend to actually paint the view by intentional camera movement. Composition in fact how you see the view and frame the view. It is also important. My point is all factors are important and time to time future technology might add new factors which you will be seeing in your 99 of age.
The reason why I love light in photography is because I see colours almost pastel like when light is shine through my surroundings/subjects. For me now though its now the opposite. I find where light is then I compose. Its true though composition is important but once you learned all aspects/basics of photography, composition will always be second nature and you can be creative and playful however you want. And that’s where light comes into subject.
photo- word-forming element meaning "light" or "photographic" or "photoelectric," from Greek photo-, combining form of phōs (genitive phōtos) "light" (from PIE root *bha- (1) "to shine"). Online Etymology Dictionary Light is no 1 in photography.
It's light, not composition, that sets photography apart as a medium. Plenty of other artforms involve composition, either directly (as with painting) or indirectly (as with how a play is blocked out). Photograph stands out precisely because to achieve its compositional goals, it uses light (which is why it's sometimes described as 'painting with light'). Ignoring, or even relegating the importance of light in a photograph would be like a painter dismissing the impact paint has on their work. Without light, a photograph does not exist, and without manipulating that light intentionally, it becomes little more than a bare sketch. Of course, there doesn't need to be a dichotomy here. Composition is crucial, arguably just as crucial as light, but certainly not moreso. Also as an aside that might prove controversial, the idea that a photograph tells a story is way overstated. The word story is tossed around so often these days that it's meaning has becoming vague at best. I know I'm being finicky here, and I know what people mean when they look for the narrative of a photograph, but by definition a story is a sequence of events, which include and develop a set of characters by pitting them against certain obstacles and describing the result. In narrative art, the artist guides the reader, viewer or listener through these events in a specific way to achieve specific goals. Maybe a photography series can achieve this (as with photojournalism, for example), but a single photograph simply can't. And that's okay. There's nothing inherently better about story as an aspect of a creative work. In fact, maybe one of the most powerful characteristics of photography is that it doesn't tell a specific story and thus allows the viewer to develop their own, inspired by what they see. A photograph sets up a story, certainly. It asks questions from which an interesting narrative might be divined. It creates a sense of mystery and potential. I guess it doesn't really matter, but I make the argument for any photographer who feels their images lack a story and are therefore inferior to those that supposedly do.
Whats funny is you argue this point as if theyre both even which I admire however I think you must see lighting as not just a tool like composition is, as you state in your video and correctly point out, but light is both a tool and essential, which Id then say this proves lighting is the most crucial
you put so much effort into each one of your videos, thank you so much !
that is so True!!
