Angelo Debarre fing im Alter von 8 Jahren an Gitarre zu spielen. In der Manush (Zigeuner) Gesellschaft werden Traditionen mündlich bei Familientreffen und -festen überliefert, wobei die Musik eine sehr große Rolle spielt. Angelo hat dies in einem Gespräch mit Michel Bedin von Jazz Hot Magazine bestätigt: „Bei einem Treffen, bei dem 300 bis 400 Wohnwagen zusammenkommen, mangelt es niemals an Musik“. Die Tradition des Gipsy Jazz, die von Django Reinhardt begründet wurde, ist das Herz dieser Kultur und Angelo Debarre stieg schnell zu einem Meister dieser Musik auf. Seine erste Gruppe „The Angelo Debarre Quintet“ gründete er 1984 und begann ein Jahr später, mit diversen Gipsy Jazz Musikern durch die ganze Welt zu ziehen. Dies ist seine Musik, die ihm im Blut liegt und sein Enthusiasmus und seine Hingabe beweisen es bei jedem Konzert aufs Neue. Für Debarre hat die Musik Django Reinhardts bis heute nichts an Dynamik und Reichhaltigkeit verloren: es ist unvergängliche, lebende Musik.


 Mit derselben Leichtigkeit hat er sich die Zigeuner-Musik Osteuropas angeeignet, ein Repertoire, das ihn besonders nach dem Kontakt mit Serge Camps im La Roue Fleurie - einer der Lieblingstreffpunkte der Zigeuner in Paris, wo er zwischen 1985 und 1987 regelmäßig spielte - interessierte. Ein weiterer Stammgast im „La Roue Fleurie“ war zu dieser Zeit Jon Larsen, der von der Musik so fasziniert war, dass er beschloss, Angelo Debarre, Serge Camps und Frank Anastasio zusammen ins Studio zu stecken und „Gipsy Guitars“ zu produzieren. Aufnahmen, die die Dynamik und die unglaubliche Vielfalt des Gipsy-Repertoires widerspiegeln. Erst kürzlich hat Angelo Debarre das Album „Caprice“ - sein erstes Album als Bandleader - aufgenommen. Mit Florin Niculescu an der Violine, Philippe „Doudou“ Cuillerier und Max Robin an der Gitarre, Bojan Zulfikarpasic am Piano, Bernard Malandain am Kontrabass und Xavier Desandre-Navarre an den Percussions, vereint dieses Album die besten Musiker Europas in dieser Stilrichtung. Diese Einspielung war ein voller Erfolg auf beiden Seiten des Atlantik und liefert den Beweis, dass Gipsy Jazz am Leben ist. (Pressetext)

Funny how when I was younger, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore were my favourite guitarists .... now Angelo Debarre, Wes Montgomery, Paco de Lucia are my farourite guitarists!

Easily my favorite. He transports me into a place where I can glimpse, if briefly, into his gorgeous mind. And is it my imagination or do he, Birelli amd Stochelo bring something of the culture to the music that non- gypsy players of the manouche style cannot?

It’s nice to see talented musicians keep Django’s legacy alive-and even take acoustic Gypsy jazz a few steps further than did the original master-but it still seems like a lot of the same thing.
Excelente requinto ... pero el guitarrista de acompañamiento y el bajo no están pintados... ¿ Porque no los presentan como lo que son ... "Un trío de Jazz gitano", y nada más le dan su crédito al requinto?... eso no les quita a los tres lo exvelentes músicos que son.
