From how GRIMEY , corrupt and sleazy the music industry of the 60's were, probably didn't want to put up with a lot of thirsty, deviants sniffing all around her, peeping and creeping sleaze bags of that era.
She didn't really make it big as a singer but I always thought she had one of the best, most sultry singers of the sixties. Way ahead of her time. We need this today, if there is anyone out there?
didn’t make it big as a singer?....she composed and sang a number one hit song from 1964...”We’ll sing in the Sunshine”...sounds pretty big to me...lol
She wrote the Grammy winner "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" If she'd only done that it would have been plenty; but she was much more. Yes, ahead of her time... and timeless.
Like the singing and the singer. It's an additional tribute to Gale Garnett's professionalism that she could keep a straight face throughout what must be one of the sillier music video scenarios.
New Zealand-born, Canadian singer, was best known in the United States for her 1964/5 Grammy-winning folk hit "We'll Sing in the Sunshine". Garnett has since carved out a career as a writer and actress.
I love her voice. I think she is so beautiful. She looks so much like my mother. Even the same wardrobe! I think almost everyone can relate to this song. She had a such a tragic childhood. I'm glad she was successful in her life. Talk about a survivor! I don't doubt her music was not always upbeat.
Cool Scopitone. For those who don't know, Scopitones were special jukeboxes that played 16mm films of the artist along with the song. Very popular in the 60's. I never knew that Gale made one! And fortunately I'm a little younger than her, else I probably would have stalked her after watching her various sexy, sultry video footage! (lol)
She made a few, Small Potatoes being one. Scopitone, it's an interesting time capsule and the fact that some of the videos are kind of cringe just makes it better!
Crazy!!! I found her first album...now I just learned about Scopitone and I've been involved in film for awhile now..never heard of it... it looks like a dream!! THanks for sharing this!! She's got a very nice voice. She's kinda racy too! :D
I wonder what this was taped for? Long before MTV. This is the first time I've heard this song. What a voice! One of the best. And she looks absolutely stunning.
Lovely ! It's nice to hear a different Gale Garnett song too. I've always loved "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" but that's all I've ever heard of her. I was surprised to hear the word Hell in the song as this was from the early '60s when something like that might've raised a few eyebrows. Makes it even more interesting.
Gale Garnett was a great beauty as well as one of the most sultry voices i have ever heard. As a kid i used to watch Mad Monster party and listen to those songs. A little bit before my time (i was born in 60) but nostalgic none the less.
This video has to be the very early 60's, possibly Pre-Beatles. Gale Garnett is a very talented actress, songwriter, singer. novelist and all around Babe!
"Tuggle" is absoloutely right: Garnett's song is one of the greatest slow tunes of all time: It is a song exactly in the mood of Patsy Clines blue tunes or Jim Reeves number "Where do you go to throw a picture away?": RCA Victor later picked this up and moulded out of this listening mood a special Jim Reeves LP expressing exactly this: "A Touch of Sadness" in 1968.
Always loved her voice, never heard this song before. The Video was a fail on all levels with a large statue of the Devil and her caressing it. Just awful!!
POTBELLY?! GUESS I'VE BEEN LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY TOO LONG. Besides being beautiful , in , perhaps , an unconventional way , Ms. Garnett was a talented song stylist. She did a semi - Psychedelic record on Columbia that's very good (W/ a WAY sexy cover.) ,reissued recently.
I'm thinking this came out; early ; '64-'65, the reason I say this, is because the Beatles brought back Rock and Roll to the U.S. Think about it, in '59 we lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens who were pushing the Rock and Roll envelope. After the crash, Rock and Roll had died for awhile. American radio started producing lighter, softer an(d easier music ( Bobby Darin, Frankie Avalon, Fabian etc.) at the time this song was fitting for that era.
They had these video machines years ago at amusument parks. Along with post card machines of your favorite artist of the day.for a dime either play the video or get a post card late 60's and early 70's last i saw them wasmid 70's.
I agree Torqem. Gale is a classy lady and great song writer singer. Thanks Gale for sharing your gift. Her deep voice in part of the song sounds amazing. This song is a treasure-tender, soothing and true. Jimmie Rogers album "A child of Clay" has some similar gems that we never will hear on the radio. Songs like "The Lovers", My love is a Wanderer", "Still You pass me By"
Actually, Gale made it very big as a country star, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette/etc. But equally worth mention, was Sissel and was part of the composing team for the Theme for Mansfield Park playing a leading role in the movie. Gale composed and sung under dozens of names assigning undercovers to carry on Gale was one of the earlist personas of Brenda Lee.
Gino marchetti by their closing ievees ides of may accusations they have cashed.me out from the intruder's using my family for the excuses. I've been cashed out by Kali Prophetess. Called I'm One of Them re the geography of hell
This is an interesting choice to make into a Scoptione video jukebox selection. Usually its upbeat songs. Gale had a great voice and this song is very moving.
When I realized what the words meant and how she sang them and her expressions of almost lostness , I actually start crying especially when if you think toward the end she finds Love instead of just traveling to fill in the emptiness in her life , then I really start crying for her .......
absolutely lovely in every possible way. voices like that don't happen anymore. Ethel Ennis and Helen Shapiro were right up there too. they had looks, style AND strong, unique voices.
I'm not taking anything away from Gail, she is truly on the most talented Singer, songwriter, actress, and writer; just to name a few of her talents. She has a very distinctive voice, and this is a Beautiful Song. I can understand the bloggers who say negative things about her. But then again, you'all don't understand the era, the music, or real talent as Gail did so long ago. Your excused!!!!
I bought a few vinyl records of Gale's years ago, but I didn't like any of the songs as much as this one. Somebody chose songs that didn't suit her vocal range or sultry voice. She was better with ballads. I could have imagined her singing a James Bond theme or some standards...certainly not the second-rate songs I heard on her albums.
+JubalCalif and +starman1968ful, so right that filmed promos were the forefunner of videos twenty years later. In the 1960s, basically starting with The Beatles' singles from 1965 onward, and other artists following suit, film--not video-- promos were made for showing on network tv, syndication, late night, for CBC, BBC, New Zealand, AU, and other nations' networks. There were no (experimental) home video recorders until about the early 70s, and then mainly for the rich. Film promos of songs proliferated, though, as did mimed "performances" on TV shows by singers such as Gale (who also guest starred in over 20 different TV series and movies, from before her first album until into the 2000s. She's now a novelist in Canada. The promo films aired in the 1970s on The Midnight Special and other shows when acts were not there to mime or play live, as well as on Ed Sullivan and many other shows by then, in the U.S. and abroad. Now, we have so many preserved in youtube. They may have only showed once per network back then, but tens of millions were tuned in, unlike the fragmentary audiences we have now.
I believe this is a Scopitone, a 16mm film jukebox they used to have in bars. So it was basically a film made for a jukebox with a screen. She also did a number called "Small Potatos" or something like that, it's on RUclips.
One little boo boo in the video is when she leaves the room with her suitcase and without a coat, then the shot shows her outside locking the door wearing a coat. Love it anyway!
Dreary? No way! This is a great song and Gale's a great singer! Her lyrics have true meaning.
I love this song! I can relate to it. Gale Garnett is awesome!
I can't figure out why she wasn't more popular than she was. GREAT voice and easy on the eyes too!
From how GRIMEY , corrupt and sleazy the music industry of the 60's were, probably didn't want to put up with a lot of thirsty, deviants sniffing all around her, peeping and creeping sleaze bags of that era.
Such a stunning woman!!
Naturally beautiful
She didn't really make it big as a singer but I always thought she had one of the best, most sultry singers of the sixties. Way ahead of her time. We need this today, if there is anyone out there?

Yeah
She's a has been; most of them singers of the sixties turn out to be has beens.
Mary Fahl
She's stunning and what a powerful voice.
One of the truly great female voices. Stuck on her from her first hit 'We'll Sing in the Sunshine'.
Like the singing and the singer. It's an additional tribute to Gale Garnett's professionalism that she could keep a straight face throughout what must be one of the sillier music video scenarios.
Her voice was incredible. She had such beautiful tonal quality and control. Such a rare alto range.
New Zealand-born, Canadian singer, was best known in the United States for her 1964/5 Grammy-winning folk hit "We'll Sing in the Sunshine". Garnett has since carved out a career as a writer and actress.
What highly intelligent lyrics! Not your average song.

Beautiful girl.....but she reminds me of my daughter...looks like her ...acts like her....clone! Gail Garnett was a talented beauty!!!!
Crazy!!! I found her first album...now I just learned about Scopitone and I've been involved in film for awhile now..never heard of it... it looks like a dream!! THanks for sharing this!! She's got a very nice voice. She's kinda racy too! :D
This is an amazing performance. A person that would belittle this, has no sense of song.
Very touching melody sung with a nice strong voice!
Her voice is liquid gold
I wonder what this was taped for? Long before MTV. This is the first time I've heard this song. What a voice! One of the best. And she looks absolutely stunning.
This is a Scopitones "video". They were popular in the 60s. Like a nickelodeon.
Lovely ! It's nice to hear a different Gale Garnett song too. I've always loved "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" but that's all I've ever heard of her. +Moon Raker I think it was in the midst of the british beat, post Sunshine
+Moon Raker and was actually a b side
1965
How did I miss this one? I've always loved Gail but this one's a real prize, beautifully haunting!
She actually looks a lot like Sherry Jackson -the 60' actress.
A beautiful woman with such a wonderful voice.
Always loved her voice, never heard this song before. The Video was a fail on all levels with a large statue of the Devil and her caressing it. Just awful!!
A really beautiful voice that lingers in your mind and heart! Thank for uploading her music.
Damn. She's a great singer. She's to gourgoues and talented. Why isn't she more famous?
The b side of the Northern Soul Popcorn classic ' I Cry Alone'. Dreamy and beautiful it is , dull and dreary it is NOT.
Gale and Timi Yuro they had big famele vox.
Simply put she is a gem I'm 68 and I've seen the best and she is right there
I'm thinking this came out; early ; '64-'65, the reason I say this, is because the Beatles brought back Rock and Roll to the U.S. Think about it, in '59 we lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens who were pushing the Rock and Roll envelope. Such great writing. listen to her song, "Prism Song", too.
Such a beautiful singer and lady. They don't make them like this anymore.
I agree Torqem. Gale is a classy lady and great song writer singer. Thanks Gale for sharing your gift. Her deep voice in part of the song sounds amazing. Wierd video! Wonderful singer!
Actually, to my ear, she's an awful lot more like Alison Moyet. Particularly in Alison's Hometime album.
If you like her you should listen to Mary Fahl

This is incredibly bizarre!
She actually looks a bit like Annette Funicello.
A wonderful song I had never heard before. The lyrics were really good and Gale's voice was magnificent as always.

Gorgeous song.......what a voice.
When I realized what the words meant and how she sang them and her expressions of almost lostness , I actually start crying especially when if you think toward the end she finds Love instead of just traveling to fill in the emptiness in her life , then I really start crying for her .......
She sounds and sorta looks like she could be Natalie Merchant's mother.
Kind of a weird song. Very unorthodox. Definitely one of the worst music videos ever. LoL.
She was brilliant, I'll forgive her for being a KIWI or as they say a South Sea Island Pom
absolutely lovely in every possible way. voices like that don't happen anymore. Ethel Ennis and Helen Shapiro were right up there too. they had looks, style AND strong, unique voices.

The silencer relay the prompt. Per chance scopitone tale wrapped by blue like damask collateral rollovers
Absolutely beautiful!!
She was never the star she should have been. Very beautiful and with that voice, she definitely should've been a bigger star.

I say by antithesis atheist by theological idea reference.
Gale was far too classy to appear in the sometimes trashy and poorly conceived Scopitones. She perfectly sang this song.
Just saw her in a episode of Have Gun Will Travel
love her pretty face and her smile
👏
This looks like one of the early forerunners of what was to become 'music-video's'.
+JubalCalif and +starman1968ful, so right that filmed promos were the forefunner of videos twenty years later. I believe this is a Scopitone, a 16mm film jukebox they used to have in bars.
So it was basically a film made for a jukebox with a screen.
She also did a number called "Small Potatos" or something like that, it's on RUclips.
Maris homes they still do know us by collaterals
I love her voice and look. why can't females look and sound like that in 2019? the ones they push on the public sound (and look) like schlitzie.
Do yoi lool the same? Men go from sooo good looking to Wth happened? Fat, bald etc
I agree. Check out Lana Del Ray. I was sceptical at first, thought she was just 'another' plastic pop princess.
Scopic they called cue card scopitone incline the richest
there are voices that i would describe as this, that or the other. but gale garnett's voice definitely owns the word...sultry!

One little boo boo in the video is when she leaves the room with her suitcase and without a coat, then the shot shows her outside locking the door wearing a coat. Love it anyway!
+MassaJim Nothing like continuity , eh. Hahaha
+MassaJim I'm *sure* it was intentional; goes along with the constant costume changes throughout the whole video.
2 different doors--bedroom and outside door--
Silly dancing girls but she is gorgeous.
This song failed to make the Billboard
and Cashbox music charts in the mid-60's!
Emotional baroque pop at its best! 😥😥😥😥
That husky come hither voice is catnip
I think like a dry wine harm is portrayed
Must have been Canadian television.
I love this video the music everything about it and the voice of Gale Garnett so original beautiful and breathtaking one-of-a-kind love love love💋🥰💕

Good video, except when it got to the part where it showed the statue of the devil and her stroking it! Ugh!
Nevertheless, I like this song!
Yeah,that was strange too.
@m8roth Amen!!! I think this is a great song!!!
I loved Gale Garnett
What a LADY she was
She's not for everyone.. Check her out in Mad Monster Party she might live up to your standards.
The missing link to Brook Benton's Father Time Trippy Scopitone...
I'm still houseman's
