Just to give you guys an idea of how insane this NFC Access Pass is, I asked them last week for every single Colts All-22 file from the Mid 2000s so I could make a video comparing Marvin Jr to Marvin Sr, and they sent it to me within three days. We're about to make some REALLY cool stuff with this, guys. I can't possibly express how excited I am.

Most of this video was written when I was sitting on a beach with a note pad, sketching things out and sort of storyboarding it right before I went to the combine. I kept that note pad with me all week and recorded everything based off those notes and story boards, and that helped me out :)

I’m at 16 and I just created a channel it was something I wanted to do for a long time but I did not feel the determination to continue. I made 2 videos and expressed my honest opinion on players and the comments got to me. this video brought my determination back thanks for the tips. Love the content as always
Having watched you for the past 7 years has given me a such a deep appreciation for your dedication and passion for the sport and medium. Definitively an inspiration and idol to me - whether it’s in this exact field or not. keep it up
We all know how respected you are in the community for your talent and content, but what always stood out to me is how much people praise you for your genuine love and care for the community. I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you for this video. So many of us smaller creators are always looking for advice like this, and I know we over here really appreciate it. Thanks for being one of the good guys, this video helped us out a lot and we will definitely be implementing this advice!
Without a word of a lie, this is the most important program that I've seen coming from a sports league when it comes to evolving coverage into the new era.
i wanna say even though i made a joke comment, brett i have been wanting to do this for awhile and watching it just inspired me so much. im gonna work my ass off for this thank you.❤
The Grind is hard im almost 60 film studies in & a series called "Sliders" I'm very proud about that covers these players in depth. Its been a bumpy road for us but I'm glad this video came out when it did. You're an inspiration to me Brett and now that I've done media at several events and learned these lessons over the years, I appreciate that you know the hardships and are still trying to get better. I appreciate you and I'm sure a lot of us smaller guys are! Thanks man.
Beginning of this year I told myself I wanted to finally start making content. Recorded a few things and didn't like how they came out so I stopped before releasing anything. I guess I should start posting it and try to be 1% better the next time I record. Appreciate all you do on this channel. Maybe one day I'll see you at an NFL event lol.
Ah I remember the early years, Ive been watching 7 years and Ive always respected your work ethic and opinions. Congrats on all your success and I'm happy to see you giving back to the community in a meaningful way.
This is so unbelievable to me watching the guy who made a cool dalvin cook scouting report way back when become an ambassador of the sport empowered by the league. Exciting times!
This is why I truly love following you, you share your knowledge and are not afraid that it will end your channel. It makes this channel so much more a must follow. Thank you.
Got nothing but respect for you Brett. Been following you for a long time and I'm proud to see how much you've stayed committed to quality and not getting swallowed up by the RUclips rabbit hole. It's so easy to sell out for more money and you just haven't. This advice is indicative of that and the platform needs more people like you. Thanks for blossoming my interest in football all these years.
This is great. I've been making videos for over a decade and RUclips had NOTHING related to football content in 2014. You were one of the pioneers. I can't name a single creator that I followed for football content before you.
This is one of the best RUclips videos I've seen in a long time. The type that you come back to because it holds that much value. Thanks for being inspiring man
Thank you so much Brett! Three months ago I started my own Seahawks X's and O's breakdown channel 100% inspired by you so I feel like this video was made just for me. You are the gold standard for RUclips content so these tips are just amazing. You are incredible and I really appreciate it! One question: What do you use for video editing? I have been messing around with my setup - starting with iMovie (I can't believe I actually did that) and now I'm on Capcut (which is pretty decent). What do you use particularly to draw route concepts? I have been like creating those images in Microsoft Word and then overlaying them which is tedious and doesn't look great. Thanks!
Brett you're a legend for doing this and even on an informational video having the sickest broll. Proud of myself that I've been subscribed to the best NFL channel for years!
I’ve been trying to get more consistent with my videos. I’ve always loved your videos. As an offensive lineman it is great understanding defensive alignments and theories. I definitely think the access pass will be a game changer! Thank you for all the great information!
Brett, I’ve always appreciated your knowledge and willingness to share related to Football content… I always leave feeling smarter while being entertained and often persuaded to think differently. Now you’re doing the same but for YT content!?!? You’re the man! You’ve inspired me to start thinking about what content, knowledge, and interests I can share with others! Mahalo and Imua!
As someone who's learned a lot from Brett, this video was gold. The only thing I'd add is, be willing to learn to learn more on your own and from the comments too on your own channel. Those are your viewers and they want you to succeed a majority of the time.
The key validating factor to the last bit you talked about: "starting off and not being great at what you attempt" is that simply being the case for any venture for any normal person. One step at a time just keep going and checking your direction as you go. If you keep going in the right direction you will end up somewhere better.
It’s been on my heart as of recent to start a RUclips channel in the near future and this video offered some great reassurance and encouragement. Thank you for all that you offer to us, Brett!
Thanks for making this wholesome content man, I appreciate it. I appreciate what you make and how much I learn. But I appreciate you taking the time to talk about this too.
Appreciate the emphasis on having good audio quality.. but how do I do that? Aside from a good mic, what do I need to do? Also, any marketing suggestions? Once you reach a certain degree of prominence your following will naturally grow if you create good content, but there are certainly some phenomenal content creators that never got past 100 subscribers. Advice?
I got a lot of my earliest traffic from Reddit back in the day. These days, a good funnel for RUclipsrs is TikTok. The algorithm is very kind of new creators on that platform so it's a bit easier to build that initial audience there.
As someone who made content for the last draft cycle for the first time, and someone getting back into the thick of it for this year, this really spoke to me. Thanks man.
I am a writer, who loves music, and loves football. I went to a concert and saw a sweet jazz band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and I met the lead vocalist, and asked about what his creative process is, and he said he only writes music that he wants to listen to. Exactly what you said, you create things that you want to create. I love how things like that can overlap to anything, I love your content, your hoodies, the information you provide, all of it. You're a real one Brett, cheers, and hope you keep creating things you love, and if I made more money, I'd support you on Patrion. Still hoping you make that Terron Johnson pic 6 into a hoodie lol
10:43 In my opinion, Brett is the perfect person to be giving this advice. He doesnt even have 500k subs as of the time im making this comment, but it doesnt matter because he understands all that really matters is having a smaller but very loyal contingent of fans like me, and very likely you, that love everything he does. Thanks Brett for all that you do, and keep it up, we'll keep watching for sure
Thanks for this Brett. I literally uploaded my first video on my channel Tuesday, and just feels like this coming out right now is just a sign for me to keep doing this. Been watching for years, thanks again Brett
During covid when there wasn't a lot of new sports to talk about I joked that espn and the NFL should just hire guys like you Brett that I had really enjoyed watching and listening to. I learned so much about the game I had been watching and playing my whole life and I found it to enhance my experience for and appreciation of football more than the adversarial discussion type media that there is so much of. I'm so glad to see you making it and having the NFL support people like you.
Brett I just wanna say you are part of the reason that future creators will be able to make the best content they can. Thank you so much for all the hard work can’t wait to see all you do next.
Loved every bit of this video and have been following you since you had 150k subs. You inspired me to start my own football content channel and haven't looked back. I'm leaving my job in the next 2 months to go full-time on RUclips and continue making the content that I LOVE. I've looked up to you as a creator for the longest time and hope that half the content and stories that I put together are what you do. Thank you for what you do and cant wait to see what is in store for you!
Brett, I know this video is quite different from the regular “breakdown” video and it might not be for everybody, but for the people who maybe want to have a job like yours in the future, it’s really helpful and appreciated, people in your position don’t have to do something like this, but the fact you give advice like this is really appreciated, thanks man.👊
Brett, your videos have always rocked because of the passion behind them. The iffy audio and stiff on-camera stuff you mention? It didn't matter because you clearly did the leg work to have confidence in the information you were imparting to all of us. You're awesome, keep being awesome
Hey @BrettKollmann, I am 40. Too late to start with sports media on YT? I am a data scientist and I just enjoy analyzing and messing with football stats, so I thought about giving this YT-thing a shot. But am I too long in the tooth? Thank you for all you do and kind regards from Germany.
hey Brett, I wanna say thank you for doing this I had some questions 1 how should I master audio? Do you have any apps that you prefer using? 2 What lighting fixtures do you use in your videos? 3 where do you find the music for your videos? thank you
Sure thing: 1. I EQ all my vocal tracks in Adobe Premiere (I should use pro tools, but whatevs) 2. I light myself most of the time with a pair Aputure 300Ds 3. I get all my music now on epidemic sound :)
dang I remember watching a lot of these old, “bad” videos, loving the content and the personality that came through with the content. So much nostalgia. Crazy growth 🐐
That 48-16 video is the first one of yours I watched and has led me down the rabbit hole of Football RUclips/Draft content, perfect example of everything you talked about.
Thank you very much for all the advice. I plan on trying my hand at content creation and this video will be invaluable once I start. It won’t cover sports but the lessons you’ve shared here can be applied to any type of genre
The prioritize value one is a very important lesson in a vast ocean of content creators (not just sports) whose low hanging fruit *IS* the ad sense route and making another channel just cuz. For me there are only a handful of sports-entertainment content creators that I'm willing to check their back log for. Regarding Lesson 4 I've seen YT grow content from its infancy of 'America's Funniest Home Videos archive' to growing various creators in finding ways to fill sub interests that folks didn't even know they wanted (but end up demanding). So I feel the authenticity is even more important as the YT Sports scene gets further saturated in the future.
Seeing Brett at the combine makes me so happy. I remember the first video I saw of him previewing the Jags vs. Giants Week 1 matchup back in 2018. He has come a long way.
Love this video, man. Great advice. As a Texans content creator I frequently thought my niche was too small, especially since we were bad for so long. But Texans football is my passion and I’m not going to stop. Hopefully me and my guys can do this full time one day. Again, thanks for this video. Needed to hear it.
I think my favorite part of your channel, outside of being interested in the topics you talk about, is that your videos are never clickbait. It feels like everywhere I look nowadays I’m getting shallow, catchy content meant to grab my attention, with an exaggarated thumbnail & title designed to take advantage of people who don’t know better. You’ve figured out a way to use techniques to catch audience’s attention without being in the consumers’ face about it. And every time I click on your videos, I know it’s going to be high quality content. BTW, I am a long time subscriber, and it’s been very cool to see how much you’ve grown as a content creator and a channel since 2017 or 2018.
Brett just wanted to say this video was very informative and helpful. As someone who’s been making youtube videos about the NBA for a year and a half now all the advice you shared in this video will stay with me. I hope one day I can get a big enough following to build a community like you did that enjoys what I love to talk about.
Awesome insights Brett! You said you are open for questions so here are some: 1. I am from across the pond, do you think that NFL content could work in german as well? 2. Does all of this apply to non-NFL content as well? Would love to hear more insights about your career
@@BrettKollmann thanks for the answer, just also wanted to thank you for the awesome content over the years! On a different note I think you forgot to add your mic to the description :)
Great video. As someone that's got a passion for sports, especially football, I've wanted to get into this scene for a while. Always been skeptical of starting but I'm taking this as a sign to go for it with the future looking bright and start making videos. Appreciate it man!
Watching this almost the same age as you is pretty funny. It’s great to see you’ve become a master at your craft and want to help younger people out trying to get into the same space Brett!
Thank you helping the upcoming generation! I have zero interest in making content but I appreciate you providing insights to ensure my entertainment stays at a high bar!
Brett, not a sports journalism major here or diy sports commentator (I’m probably too washed up to start now lol), but this video was very encouraging and inspiring for someone like me who has a creative spirit in me growing manic for an outlet of self-expression. Just have to get out of my own way! Thanks for the tips and keep up the great content
I once tried starting a RUclips channel in my teens. It was awful, and eventually my lack of confidence caught up to me and I stopped. Lately I've been thinking of trying again somehow, your content and this video have inspired me that maybe I can make that leap of faith I couldn't do years ago
i'm the 17yo, just bought a computer and i've been practicing how to edit every chance i get, it's something i enjoy and i lovedlove learning. i thank everyone for the recourses my generation is able to have because of you🙏
i finnished the video and it's reassuring knowing i'm on the right path, i've always wanted to have a successful career and i know that's not all of it but ive always had that motive and im always thankful for people sharing their information. if anyone's interested i post my edits on tiktok for now while im still figuring out what i like, im always looking for feedback❤️
You do make great stuff. When you made the video last season breaking down the Eagles offense and how it was basically a high school scheme, it was a damn lightbulb moment for me in why they were shitting the bed. Thank you for your hard work and analysis.
Currently in school for broadcasting and content creation has always been a dream of mine. Draft analysis is a ton of fun and I hope that someday I can be decent enough at it to garner a following. I really appreciate this video and everything you do
However: I have a rebuttal: Considering how there are aspects of the NFL both in its history, and especially now with regards to CTE concerns, the devaluation (and frankly, suppression) of RB salaries, or any sort of other hot button topics, will you have editorial freedom and control to talk about these subjects if and when they arise without losing this access?
As a viewer for many year of more videos than I want to count, I would say that the time sink isn't as bad, as the emotional residue. That will turn me off a channel right quick. You know when you eat fast food and you feel a little heavy or sick or mad at yourself afterwards. If a video makes me feel a little like that, I grow to resent that creator. Quality, respect, authenticity, and, yes, value, is key to make me happy to watch a video, and want to see more.
Brett, you’re a goddamn hero. We love your content, especially those of us females that are trying to learn more about football X’s and O’s. Just continue to be you bro 😎🫶🏻🫂🥃 sending love from Hamilton ON 🇨🇦♥️ Congrats 🎉🥳🤩on all the success so far….enjoy the ride!
Brett, you're one of my favorite sports content creators. I just really wish you could make something about the Texans now and give us your observations, insights, and basically your view of the current organization, players, and coaches. I personally have never had such hope and pride for a football team in Houston. Going all the way back to the 90's era Oilers. I don't know if this team will ever win a Super Bowl but for once in Houston, our football team has a genuine legitimate chance of winning. Like I said though, I and most other Texans fans would really love to hear your take on the team.
Man, I really needed to hear this. Especially the, "be you, be niche" part. I'm going to start working on a football comic soon and was wondering how to market it. I just need to talk about being raised on football and learning to love football, my passion for emotional storytelling, and what impact reading manga had on me as an individual and a creative. Thank you Brett. Also I need to get a good mic. 😅
It’s cool you bring up the thumbnail thing because one of the big things I notice when looking through my subscriptions for whatever content I want to watch with my meal is that your thumbnails stick “pop” more than most.
I do not plan to get into youtube but I think there are good lessons in here and thanks for all that you do I just like to learn a little bit about everything and you have helped me with that with football
I didn’t know shit about defensive coverages or passing concepts until I found your channel years ago. I still don’t know much but I’m very thankful for the bit I’ve been able to absorb from you as it typically makes me the smartest football person in most rooms. You’re the best, keep up the incredible work. But also, if you get my hope up about the panthers again like you did last year and we bomb as hilariously bad again, we’re gonna have words lol
He said he was going to share links to the mic in the description, but I checked the description, and there were no mics. :( Now I have to open a WHOLE NEW TAB and type a whole dozen characters to google them. 😭 But in all seriousness, this video was not what I expected it would be, but a wealth of great industry information. Thanks for what you do, Brett!
As an audio person, I can attest to Rule #1. Mistakes and technical difficulties happen … yet they are fixable and can be forgiven if one's audio is on point. Having worked as an on-air personality, as well as one who has covered the NFL, good audio is paramount, and without exaggeration 60% -- if not more -- a determining factor to the success of a project. Here's a suggestion for would-be content creators. If audio isn't your thing, partner with someone who knows audio, and loves it. Think about your all-time favourite film(s). Then imagine -- no matter how awesome the cinematography -- how the audio and SFX moved you. Nailing the audio, no matter the production/product is key!
Super cool timing on this video. I've been watching you since at least the Isaiah Oliver video (6 years ago btw?!), but I just started my content creation journey a couple months ago. Great info in here, thanks Brett👊

Thanks man.
Such a great video Brett been following your content for 6 years now
It's impossible to know who someone really is based on RUclips videos, but I feel confident in saying... you're a good dude, Brett.
Thank you.
Love ya man. Thanks for this video. Exciting times ahead
Thanks!
Personally I and my editors use Adobe Premiere and After Effects, mostly :)
@@BrettKollmann Thank you!!!
Thank you for sharing this Brett
But I appreciate you taking the time to talk about this too.
crazy how much this translates past just sports content. I’m a music production major and I feel like I’ve learned so much in the past 15 minutes
The audio point is so important when you think about.
A lot of people listen to RUclips in the background, very few people watch RUclips on mute.
Noted. Rly appreciate the advice, keep up the great work
As someone who made content for the last draft cycle for the first time, and someone getting back into the thick of it for this year, this really spoke to me. Thanks man.
Lesson 5: "Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something." -Jake the Dog, Adventure Time
I am a writer, who loves music, and loves football.

In my opinion, Brett is the perfect person to be giving this advice.
Brett, I know this video is quite different from the regular “breakdown” video and it might not be for everybody, but for the people who maybe want to have a job like yours in the future, it’s really helpful and appreciated, people in your position don’t have to do something like this, but the fact you give advice like this is really appreciated, thanks man.👊
Thank you Brett for being an inspiration in the space and having a way for everyone! It's great to hear that the NFL is committing to creators more.
It's never too late!
hey Brett, I wanna say thank you for doing this I had some questions
1 how should I master audio? Do you have any apps that you prefer using?
2 What lighting fixtures do you use in your videos?
3 where do you find the music for your videos?
thank you
Sure thing:
1. I EQ all my vocal tracks in Adobe Premiere (I should use pro tools, but whatevs)
2. I light myself most of the time with a pair Aputure 300Ds
3. I get all my music now on epidemic sound :)
@@BrettKollmann Awesome, Thanks!
been watching since your Christian Hackenberg days
dang I remember watching a lot of these old, “bad” videos, loving the content and the personality that came through with the content.
I appreciate the kind words, truly
Brett just wanted to say this video was very informative and helpful. As someone who’s been making youtube videos about the NBA for a year and a half now all the advice you shared in this video will stay with me. I hope one day I can get a big enough following to build a community like you did that enjoys what I love to talk about.
Awesome insights Brett! You said you are open for questions so here are some:
1. I am from across the pond, do you think that NFL content could work in german as well?
2. Does all of this apply to non-NFL content as well?
Would love to hear more insights about your career
It would definitely work in German! Germany is a huge NFL market. One of the 4-5 biggest, easily.
Love your content dawg. Your approach is refreshing across the board. You legitimately raised the bar for sports content creators. Keep it up!
Thanks for the video Brett this was very informative as a content creator just stating out! Keep up the great work man!
Brett has always been a talented, intelligent, and kind creator...
Thank you so much 🙏
This is awesome. Next time you have that access can you please try to take down our dumb 2014 afc finalist banner? thanks!
I once tried starting a RUclips channel in my teens. It was awful, and eventually my lack of confidence caught up to me and I stopped.
Lately I've been thinking of trying again somehow, your content and this video have inspired me that maybe I can make that leap of faith I couldn't do years ago
You should absolutely keep going!
i'm the 17yo, just bought a computer and i've been practicing how to edit every chance i get, it's something i enjoy and i lovedlove learning. i thank everyone for the recourses my generation is able to have because of you🙏
i finnished the video and it's reassuring knowing i'm on the right path, i've always wanted to have a successful career and i know that's not all of it but ive always had that motive and im always thankful for people sharing their information. if anyone's interested i post my edits on tiktok for now while im still figuring out what i like, im always looking for feedback❤️
You do make great stuff. When you made the video last season breaking down the Eagles offense and how it was basically a high school scheme, it was a damn lightbulb moment for me in why they were shitting the bed. Thank you for your hard work and analysis.
So glad I saw this before making my Draft reaction videos this weekend!
Thanks for sharing Brett! Took notes 📝 dreaming of getting to your level
Currently in school for broadcasting and content creation has always been a dream of mine. Draft analysis is a ton of fun and I hope that someday I can be decent enough at it to garner a following. I really appreciate this video and everything you do
(Also your point about audio is so insanely correct and all of my professors have emphasized the same sentiment repeatedly)
Been riding with you since like 2017 dude, crazy to be here now today
As a small creator who definitely looks up to you all I can say is thank you for this
I have no interest in ever being a RUclipsr, but this video was so interesting and well made I had to watch.
This was not at all what i expected, but is totally awesome of you to upload!
Now I have to open a WHOLE NEW TAB and type a whole dozen characters to google them. 😭
But in all seriousness, this video was not what I expected it would be, but a wealth of great industry information. Thanks for what you do, Brett!
Is there an application for the NFL Access Pass or is the NFL just most of the outreach?
Again thanks for the great content!
I'll be honest, I'm not totally sure on that. But I do know that the NFL is looking for more and more creators to reach out to!
As an audio person, I can attest to Rule #1. Mistakes and technical difficulties happen … yet they are fixable and can be forgiven if one's audio is on point.
Having worked as an on-air personality, as well as one who has covered the NFL, good audio is paramount, and without exaggeration 60% -- if not more --
a determining factor to the success of a project.
Here's a suggestion for would-be content creators. If audio isn't your thing, partner with someone who knows audio, and loves it. Think about your all-time favourite
film(s). Then imagine -- no matter how awesome the cinematography -- how the audio and SFX moved you. Nailing the audio, no matter the production/product
is key!
Great video Brett! Thanks for all the hard work you put into this content. Really appreciate it!
Super cool timing on this video. I've been watching you since at least the Isaiah Oliver video (6 years ago btw?!), but I just started my content creation journey a couple months ago. Great info in here, thanks Brett👊
Been Uploading Draft videos for about 4-5 years with my boy. Finally seeing some content get noticed thank you Brett
