Well said, I live with anxiety and PTSD and my garden (now due to life changes, my homestead) has always been a place of peace and rejuvenation for me. I have had to separate myself from several channels who previously provided inspiration and encouragement along with wisdom because they have become a source of anxiety. I discovered your channel with your Rain Gutter of Change and greatly appreciate the mindset I see here. Please keep up the positive and encouraging work. Thank you for posting!

Thank you. Working to fix our broken food system, one farm, one community at a time is a goal full of hope and promise. I grow some fruit and vegetables, but not enough, so I support local farmers by buying what I don't grow, or raise, from them. No fear here, just admiration and respect for the farmers I buy from. Cheers!

Well stated. I get frustrated at sensationalism and alarmist tactics. YT creators and media are notorious for that, because it works to generate views. I started my homestead purely for enjoyment. As some of the supply issues have developed, I’ve been thankful for the level of self-sufficiency we have established, but it isn’t going to make or break my family. I am hoping to share content that might inspire folks to try a way of life that is rewarding. Thanks for your thoughts! Good luck keeping that fence clear. 👊👍

I seenit as click bate. If it works for one channel, bother channels try it too
The " will it run", "I bought the cheapest x on FBMP or Amazon"
" your not gonna believe what X company did to me" its clicks over content.

Thank you for giving voice to inspiration rather than fear. I have also seen this disaster preparedness trend and consider it disturbing. I grow my own food and want to feel some security with it but I know that I will do a better job and have more peace of mind when I approach it from a place of nourishing myself rather than fearing an apocalyptic future. I appreciate you taking the time to voice your thoughts.

I so appreciate this video! I find value in preparedness for our family for things like natural events, unexpected hospital trips, job loss, power outages, broken water pipe in the house. Within a week of thinking about preparedness our area, for the first time ever, had massive wildfires and we had to evacuate for 10 days. Last year a pipe broke and we had to shut off water to the house while we had to fix it.
The world isn't ending, but stuff does happen. And having some items available has really brought peace to my family and kept fear at bay while we deal with the situation at hand.
There is so much value in hope and there is no hope in fear. The future is bright and we can make it brighter with hope and supporting community and being sustainable together.

Thank you, Jack. I have stopped watching some homesteaders I have followed for a while because they moved to a place of fear rather than a connection to their land, their gardens, their animals. I grew up in a snowy area, so my family was always prepared in the event that a blizzard would cut us off for days or a week. I continue to do that, from habit. It was so helpful when I contracted Covid and couldn't leave my house for several days. Thank you for your well-reasoned approach.

Survival as human beings has always been built around communities rather than individuals. It's going to continue to be true into whatever the future holds. We have some control over how much we are consumers versus producers, but we will always have some needs we cannot fulfill without the help of others. Cooperation is not built on fear.

Thank you for this video. I want to get into farming and self-sufficiency because I have severe OCD. I inspect every single grape or cherry or strawberry. The smallest blemish and I have to toss it. It's wasteful and debilitating, so I figure learning to grow my own food, seeing the grow cycle, will help alleviate my anxiety around food. So, as someone with severe anxiety, seeing these large homesteading channels and their recent messaging has been alarming. I follow several homesteading/prepping channels. There has been a swift, abrupt change in the tone of several channels. They're not just instilling fear, but there is also a gloating & boastful attitude. I just want to improve my relationship with food.

I agree 100% what you said! About time someone made a video like this. I have unsubscribed to some channels that have changed directs of their channel to fear mongering.
Also definitely interested in the conference. I always wanted to go to HOA but it’s during hunting season. The beginning of September works better for us because we’re in between butchering chickens and butchering deer and beef. The NE conference is closer to home as well.

I garden and farm chickens and goats because it brings me and my wife and our little girl joy and I know I’m doing it the way God intended it. I always have friends who say "better get this while you can or stock up in this when you can“ always thinking the worst. I’m doing this because we enjoy it.

Agree 100% It's a matter of separating from versus helping better the world. Homesteading is good for the world and society. Prepping is, at best, good for the prepper, society be damned. I might be wrong, something many won't admit, but that's my view of it right now with my fruit and nut trees, chickens, garden, and the sharing of all of it with friends and neighbors.

"It's never ending." LOL - so true. But feels so rewarding to have all this. 100% agree w your points. Just yesterday watched Week 7 of Suscovich meat birds and his canoe philosophy actually jives very well with what you say. As with any visual media, fear is an easy marketing tactic if you don't want to spend the time or the thought to develop a deeper 'why.' That then leads to short-termism, drives up prices for the rest of us, and also degrades the value of what we do. Thanks for sharing this. And farm life is imperfect - but it's real. Not all my organic no till veggies and fruits are perfect, free from bugs, or uniformly shaped. But on the whole, they taste better, and I bet they are more nutrient dense, and more bonanfide organic than the so-called organic label items sold in chain stores ...

I had to peice together an 18 count of eggs becaue there were 6 cartons left…all had at least 1 busted egg. So I moved some eggs around and made a full 18 count😂😂🤷🏼‍♂️ my point is there weren’t enough for the 15 people that were in that section if they all needed or wanted eggs and I need my ladies to start laying man!! It cost almost $10 for those 18 egg

I have been a prepper for over 20 years, but I have always made it clear I was a hobby prepper. I live in the tropics in a rainforest on farmland, my father grew bananas and other tropical fruits, so I have a lot of food growing on property, my father also had chickens but kept them wild free ranging without a coop, my father was a homesteader before I knew what a homesteader was, my father isn't around anymore, but now I know why he did what he did, im following his footsteps because I was a homesteader before I was a prepper. Fear has no place in prepping or Homesteading.

I get the YT hype of scare tactics that some homesteading channels are trying to monetize on. However, I view homesteading as an alternative to big farming and big government living shifts in society. To me, homesteading is about community and individual freedom to live away from the rat race city lifestyle. Its a skill to have even on a small level just in case society does regress a little during hard times.

I wouldn't call my self a prepper but I am trying to be more prepared. I have had 30+ years of first aid training. I have been trained a few times in wilderness first aid. I keep good first aid kits at home and in all vehicles. In the last few years we have started stock piling some canned goods. If something is on sale, buy a few extra cans. Our parents did this their entire lives and we are just catching on! We are in our 50s. 2 years ago I built a 4x8 raised bed. We mostly raised tomatoes and peppers. This year I tilled a 12x20 section of our yard to grow green beans. The plants look amazing. We hope to can green beans this year. Are we prepping? Not really. We are trying to have more control over what we eat. We already buy a lamb every year from a neighbor. We buy half a beef from a family member. We buy all of our eggs from a local friend. We are just trying to have more control over where our food comes from.

I am a lowercase p prepper rather than an uppercase P Prepper if that makes sense. We have seen empty shelves, shortages, lock downs, etc. I don't think civilization is collapsing, but I do think that the time you could expect to rely on others and be comfortable is coming to an end.
We had a four day power outage a few weeks ago. We had heat from the woodstove, a store of water, and food we could cook in the fireplace. Honestly, it felt great to be prepared.
I don't think it is necessary to prepare for the end of the world, but I do think that the average person could do to think a bit more about what their survival relies on.

Fear is a great motivator. What difference does it make why we want to grow our own food/ raise livestock? Look at the world around you. There are some good things going on, but overwhelmingly it's MOSTLY ALL BAD. If the facts of reality scare you then that's on you. I think most people just want to live in peace and be left alone, so if everything works out and goes "BACK TO NORMAL" (LOL), then so be it. No harm, no foul. If there are those who do not wish to "live and let live" and insist on bringing violent intentions to a peaceful environment then I say "Live by the sword- die by the sword". Fear can be a very useful emotion when you learn how to live with it in balance.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  2 года назад +3

Fear is actually a terrible motivator. Fear only motivates until the source of the fear is eliminated. If you have not control over the source of the fear, then you’ll live in a constant state of reactivity, being controlled by an outside entity.
When you act on your own and not from a place of fear, you’re much more likely to be sustainable in your pursuits.
Think of a kid that’s taught to behave by beating beaten (not just the occasional smacked back end), vs a kid that’s been taught via good example. One is much more likely to end up adrift and not in a good place later on life than the other.
It was way worse during the Great Depression than it is now. If fear is what gets you motivated, by all means harness that, but it’s not sustainable for you long term, and your long term mental health is going to suffer because of it.

I think it is funny that all the nouveau you tube homesteaders think they are raising their own food and that they will be fine if there is disaster or disruption.
I watch several channels and listen to them preach about being prepared. Every single one of them is buying bagged feed for everyone of their animals. If you can't feed your animals as well as your family... YOU ARE NOT PREPARED. unless you are planning to butcher everything and try to preserve it.

Bagged feed loses 75% of its nutritional value within 3 months. It’s susceptible to grain mites, vermin, and other pests. Not to mention that the prospect of defending any number of animals against those who seek to take them is unfeasible.
If you’re spending money on stockpiling grain, you’re wasting money.

@@TheMindfulHomestead I agree that is why we grow everything we need to feed our livestock and ourselves.
Corn and grains are only raised and harvested commercially once a year so where's the nutrient value there.

@@susanmarsh5648 Well first off grain is harvested all year long. We’re a global economy but even in the United States, we have a 3-4 month window of harvest for most crops. And when those grains are left whole, they last a lot longer than 3 months.
And my point about being a sitting duck still stands. You aren’t going to be able to indefinitely defend a whole farm from anyone who wants to take it. So crops, being rooted in the ground and unable to come with you, are a moot point in that case.

The day we turned our live/die lives into meaningless and disrespectful childish games of win/lose and used those games to structure society was when we lost it.
We now so fear failure you'd think we would actually die were we to lose.
The unknown is beyond such cowards as they cling to what they know is screwing them rather than stand up straight and pull up their pants.
The highest potential of the poor people of the win/lose is everyone loses, AKA Hell on Earth.
"IF" the poor people of the win/lose had the ability to work together in respect, dignity, and diplomacy for the greater good the highest potential, the win/win, they would be doing so now and they wouldn't be the poor perverted people of the win/lose.
You can't fix that kind of brainwashed and it's just a sin how that kind of "grooming" fixes itself, .. the poor children eh?
    Good luck

I have noticed a correlation between people who believed in religions also following propaganda which proves my point that most religion is propaganda

The bottom line is that prepping and survivalism is not going to save you if your time is up. Nothing will. I had a friend who was in extremely good shape( former military spec ops) and he was a hunting guide and survival instructor in his retirement. He went for his morning run and was hit by a truck. He was killed. All of his prepping and skills were for not. I am a firefighter and have seen a lot of bad things. I feel like people worry about things that they can't do anything about. People do crazy things out of fear. Trust me. Crazy things. History repeats itself bad will come and so will good. Relax. It's all going to be okay.

And my husband and I have always lived in the country and had animals and a garden. We didn't even know that it was called anything until the middle 2000s when a guy that moved here and told us it was called homesteading. I always thought the homestead act was a throw back to how my great grandparents got this land in the first place during the land rush.

Omg yes. I am really interested in homesteading and prepping. But I am super turned off by the political undercurrents and religious quotes that come with that by so many content creators.

Just subscribed to your channel and purchased some of those garden items you suggested. In listening to this video though you seem to be a tad wishy washy on the issue of being prepared. Perhaps the reason many homesteaders are taking more of a "prepper" view of things is you would have to be a damned fool to not see all that has been and is going on in our Country over the last 2 to 3 years, especially during the last 3 months. And don't for a moment think you or even all of us together are going to change or stop what is going full speed ahead on 30 different fronts all at once - stop drinking the cool -aid. The Supreme Court reversal of Roe by the way merely left the issue to the states where Constitutionally it always belonged to begin with. The next 6 to 9 months is going to be a historical doozy so better buckle up. And there is not anywhere for you to "bug out" to that is going to be any better than where you are right now even though as a food source you are in the most populated county in NH. God Bless:)

Read it all. Honestly, the Bible was never intended to be read and focused on bit by bit. Revelation matters but so does everything else.

@@TheMindfulHomesteadI was speaking of the prophecies and the warnings of the end times and the tribulation to come. The Bible is honestly for Father God in heaven's people, the lost sheep of the house of Israel, of the seed of Isaac. It's a dead letter to everyone else. Thanks for your videos friend, I learn much from you.
