As a library technition, i take personal offence to the public library joke from a show thats nearly 20 years old and remember watching as a small child when it was deeply innapropreate.
I like how Bob's character isn't any of those random adult show father stereotypes, where they are abusive to their wives, neglecting their children, always hanging out with their friends, etc. Bob is supportive to his kids and gives them helpful advice, and I also love that he actually loves his wife, even protecting and supporting her.
Bob is a great character. Loyal to his wife, supportive to his children and always looks on the bright side of life. Ferrel providing the voice makes it even better
@@alexadamns8115 Well, one is in the scene where he's so disturbed by the idea of Milo potentially being trans, that he jokingly contemplates suicide. Another is in a scene where Pickles expresses worries over Beth and he immediately asks: "Are you worried she'll become a lesbian?"
In a way the Oblongs strike me as another version of the Addams family. The Addams were made to be the exact opposite of the 1950s resentful family. A loving, functional, and accepting group that were ostracized for being different. The Oblongs are certainly more adult, but have that same deep love that keeps them afloat.
It's strange to me how a cartoon about deformed mutant weirdos who live in abject poverty has the most normal and functional family of any main cast in cartoon history.

I just adore Bob's relationship with Pickles. It seems adult animation these days always has the parents borderline hate eachother and their family. Its such a common and boring trope.
Yeah, he is the most optimistic and most in love with the world, despite being the one most put at a disadvantage. To bad he's so naive, and that his naivite sometimes borders on bigotry. Moderation I guess. 🙂
Bob Oblong, Bob Belcher, Hank Hill, Beef Tobin, Owen Tillerman and Dr. Katz are the greatest tv dads in all of adult animation… you just can’t deny it!
@@yggdrasil2 Oh… well Owen Tillerman’s from Central Park, Dr. Katz is from Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, but his kid Ben is already an adult and Wayne Hart is from Bless The Harts, he’s not married to his wife Jenny but he’s still a great guy all around…
I love how eternally optimistic Bob is, it's so refreshing to see as the father figure in a cartoon aimed at an older audience. He just loves his life and his family
Originally, Bob was meant to be voiced by Mark Hamill. Just imagine how different his scenes would be with his voice. I think Ferrell was a more wiser choice.
From what I can tell, the family income comes from Bob's Globocide salary and his navy pension and benefits. No wonder Bob and Pickles are usually on top of their finances. Why do I love that his glimpses of backstory have a tinge of rose colored glasses so thick that he shields himself from the vitriol of others? It makes his out of character moments, like the whole Robbie thing and his hints of homophobia/transphobia so jarring.
It's both funny and sad how Bob is constantly mistreated by society (especially by his boss) and yet desperately wants to be integrated. Maybe it's why he acts like a stereotypical old fashion dad from the 1950's (with his highs and lows). Because that's what the elites from the hills see as a good father figure.
Personally, I just thought he was too nice to the point of being innocently insensitive but from how you put it, your explanation actually makes a lot more sense. Although despite his flaws, I will say that Bob is a good man just trying to survive a harsh and that’s something I can respect (Being from a blue-collar family, I can sympathize a bit with how Bob deals with harsh work life.)
I wish this show would continue on. I would have love to see Bob childhood story and the events that result him to become the charismatic father character in this show.
It's kinda funny because I'm currently watching King of the Hill for the first time and he has a guest role as a soccer coach in the latest episode I saw lol. He does the exact same voice as with Bob but it really suits his characters.
For everyone’s reference pickles and Bob were made to counter the stereotypes of a spiteful married couple. Bob was made happy and the American dream, while pickles was one who indulged and was still capable.
I love Bob! I’m normally not a fan of Will Ferrel, but this particular character…I think it’s cause I don’t have to see his face, so it makes me like him more. I’m not even trying to be mean. Bob is one of the sweetest characters on the show. He’s giving us a little bit of Ned Flanders, but with some spiciness cause the man’s a lover. He loves his woman, the twins, Milo, and their adorable lil baby girl. Plus it’s hella funny that’s his name when that’s what he’d do if he was thrown in a pool. Y’all heard that joke before, right?! Bob got conjoined twins, a son with ADHD, and a baby with a mole in her head. He basically dated a senior Debbie, which is notably badass. Got him a hot wife and don’t he know it?! Except for the conjoined part, das mah family right there. It’s kinda relatable
It turns out Bob's condition is a real thing Phocomelia is a rare condition that affects babies at birth. Usually one or more limbs are missing/deformed at birth and can caused by toxic chemicals introduced to the mothers body during pregnancy. Bob mentioned that his mom ate at the best restaurant in the valley every day when she was pregnant with him, and it was a run down dive with questionable sanitation. Maybe she was making the best of her situation and couldn't eat anywhere in the Hills
You forgot when Milo was crossdresing and Bob was, how to say it, displeased with the idea...The whole episode was brutal with the lesbian uprising in the midst of a war ("the men went to war and women rejoiced in one another. Then sadly the war ended" lol).
Change re-juice to “rejoiced,” the way I read it the first time, and it’s not so bad. I’d rejoice if my boys went…cause the house would stay clean after I’ve cleaned it. I would rejoice!
