The Truman show is a movie I've wanted to watch for a long time already. This movie was absolutely amazing! I feel like it's filled with so many important questions that are still super relevant to this day.

You know why we don’t see what happens after he leaves the island? Because he’s not on tv anymore. We are the audience, and he is supposed to be free, so we don’t see it.
How it’s meant to be.
And it doesn't matter. He is free now. He can do ANYTHING he chooses. To script out what he does after that takes away some of the power of that.
That's ruined by the movie showing us the audience and the producers

And Burbank is the name of the movie studio where they filmed.

Two things I remember from seeing this in the theater:
1. I walked out feeling like there were cameras watching everything I did
2. I was disappointed in the ending. I wanted to see Truman reunite with Sylvia. I wanted to see him face his “parents” and his “best friend” so they’d have to look him in the eye.
But the more I thought about it, I realized it’s the perfect ending. Once Truman steps through that door, we don’t get to see him anymore. He’s off camera.
I remember walking out and my friends just saying “Ugh, that was boring” and I thought they were crazy.

Fun fact, they named the Truman Show Delusion after this film. It's where a person believes they're the center of everything in some staged reality show.
Fun fact. The original intent of the studio was to have the screen in theaters switch over to a camera watching the audience, to really freak them out.

Love your reaction to this movie!. Another great film by the same writer Andrew Niccol, with very deep relevance to the present day is Gattaca (which Andrew Niccol also got to direct). And if you want another Jim Carey film that makes you think, and is charming & clever, try Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry.
I don't know why people think the photo thing was creepy. Dude just trying not to forget her face, that's all. Forgetting someone you love is really painful.

@@jscan4442 Yeah, the human face is a very complex structure by itself. It makes sense that he had to take parts from so many pictures to get the specific resemblance to someone could not/didn't want to forget.

I love the fact that you don't get to see what happens to him when he leaves.
As with the show, he no longer is the subject of the audience's entertainment and so his life becomes private for the first time in his life.
agree, it gives us a little let down. Not seeing them reunited and such. But, for the first time in his entire life. His life is his own.

This movie came out right before Reality TV became popular. I imagine the screenwriter for this movie thinking, "it wasn't supposed to be a how to manual".
reality tv was around befoe this. I remember a show in the 70's called "An American Family".
"Shock Treatment" came out even earlier (1981).
MTV had "The Real World" since 92. 6 years before this movie was released.

Reality TV was already big. That was exactly the reason this movie was made. It was inspired by reality TV.

Yeah still I'm sure some of those actors formed a strong bond with Truman like his best friend I mean all people have feeling & emotion & can sometimes win over how your supposed to behave. In films many actors have actually admitted that during a scene they wasn't acting they were being themselves for example they might be genuinely scared.
I mean it was the whole point of the movie. Well... sort of. And agency in our lives.
@@garyclarke9685 I didn't pick up on this the first time watching but there's a lot of bits where crew members voices waver and they look like they're tearing up, 2 cases I noticed were with Truman's friend when he said he'd never lie to him and the people in the observation room where they were creating the storm to attack Truman's boat. Those subtle details are pretty cool
I always wondered about the dad. The director said he was upset about being killed off and snuck back onto the set. I felt like maybe it wasn’t so much about losing the gig as having to leave Truman, like he had grown to genuinely care for the kid.
@@neonmajora8454 I don't think there's an absence of care for Truman. But no matter what sort of bond they have with Truman, the fact that they're TV show actors twists it into something barely even resembling love. There's a difference between forging a bond with someone and genuinely caring about them enough to ACTUALLY not lie to them about being watched and trapped. Anyone who'd love Truman enough to treat him like a human being wouldn't have been capable of staying on the show that long.
I love the moment Truman "touches the sky". Even though it's just a wall - to him it is the sky, the sky that he has lived with all his life.
Jim Carrey got robbed of an Oscar nomination at least for this movie.

This was the first time I realised that Jim Carrey actually had some dramatic acting chops (I was never a big fan of his comedies) and I was so glad to see him doing more dramatic roles in the years that followed, with Man in the Moon among others.
His butt should've won the supporting actor Oscar for its performance on Ace Ventura
The moment Truman finally realises his entire life was a lie is just so sad 😢 Jim Carrey was so good in this film.
It's an Oscar winning performance by an actor who shows he's not just a manic / comedy type.
At least this film had a following, even if it wasn't large. He did an even better job in the even more underrated film The Majestic.
He knew all along deep down. The end is when it was finally confirmed. Not when he realizes it.
I'm in this film. I worked on it for all four months of shooting here in Seaside, FL, near my hometown (the town is a real place, not a set built for the film, though a few elements were added).
I was a featured extra and also Jim Carrey's stand-in. I still have a script I stole from set. :) It was a brilliant experience and it's a brilliant film. One of my favorites.
That's interesting to learn, thanks for sharing! I assume one of the few elements they added for the film was the massive dome they put you all in for a bit hahaha

@@sam_c95 haha, that's just a single fx shot. They digitally added more height to some of the buildings, as well as built physical additions like the bus stop arches and Truman's insurance building (just a false front).

How AWESOME! I was just telling my fiancé that being an extra on Truman would have been SPECTACULAR! I recently became friends with a Vet on FB and he worked with Jim Carrey as well. Jim is my all time favorite performer besides Robin Williams. You are so fortunate!

Yes true she wasn't acting when she played out those scenes with Truman I believe she was being herself. She was also a hypocrite for being involved in the show line the first place knowing how she felt about how immoral a show like this is.
@@garyclarke9685 That's an interesting thought. I always assumed she didn't become disgusted with the immorality of the show until after her guest appearance and firing. She was likely a big fan of it in Truman's younger years and didn't see it as wrong until after meeting Truman in-person.
I love the way this film is shot, with the camera in sneaky places, behind stuff or in cupboards or jewelry. It makes for interesting perspective and adds to the creepiness of always being watched.
I saw it in the Cinema back in the days … and it blew my mind. Till today it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. And it is a masterpiece. It was one of the reasons, why I became a screenwriter. Great reaction! I feel you :-)

The thing with him looking at the picture with the magnifying glass with him and her on their wedding day, is that she had her fingers crossed, meaning that she didn't really mean it.

I get the implied meaning of the crossed fingers, but that could also be implied as "I hope this marriage works out well, fingers crossed."
I find the Director to be one of the most reprehensible movie villains of all time.
His feeling of ownership overs Truman’s entire being is so disturbing.
I think it was more - Truman was the centerpiece of his work over the past 30 years - HOWEVER he still takes risks with a human life at the end - and kept his true love from him...dick move.

I half expected him to break character and the somber tone and FREAK out at Truman - you KNOW he would deliver the likes of wich we saw in The Abyss and so on - man BUT ....he is better being that quiet I control all kinda dude that is a little....no a TON more into his "work/job" than he should be

@@tc4ltheking I didn't see it that way. While it's true he was the villain of the story, I like to think he cared for Truman like a father in a sense. Certainly he cared also about his career and everything that goes with that, but I do believe he genuinely cared for Truman too. Allowing him to leave or even to reveal the truth to him would break that illusion of being like a father to him.
A movie that's eerily analogous to social media and modern reality TV. So good.
When this movie was advertised they made it clear The Truman show was a reality TV show. When people watch this now a days blind knowing nothing, thy always get confused.
I don't think they sold it well, probably because the marketers didn't really know how to. This film has become a cult classic, but I don't think it was initially a big success.
@@neil2444 Well I saw the add a lot and I saw it in theaters. It wasn't as quoted s Mask or Ace but I think it did better then The Majestic. And most people I know know what it its. People l talk about it the same way they do The Matrix or Groundhogs day.
I was young when I saw this in theaters. I understood it but didn't REALLY understand ya know? Watched it very recently and gotta say it was extremely well written and Jim Carrey played Truman perfectly. And it really really makes you think about some things. Absolutely love this movie! There's an extra layer of significance in watching a normal person RUclips blogger (is that the correct phrase?) watching the Truman show.
All the reactions i've seen to this film are so funny. Obviously reactors don't want to be spoiled ahead of seeing stuff, but I remember when The Truman Show came out in cinemas the fact that he was in a TV show wasn't a secret plot twist, it was part of the advertising. Everyone going in to see the film knew what it was about. So the reactors' confusion is unlike anything the original audiences experienced. It's like sitting down to watch Jurassic Park not knowing it's about dinosaurs.
Re-watching this is just surreal. What was that world's society like? Thirty years to watch this man... and then it hits me we are in that world.

I remember this movie well. It came from a time when social media was starting to take over the world and reality television began to replace drama and sit-coms as popular forms of entertainment. It was also during the time when Jim Carrey pulled away from his ridiculous characters and started to explore some more serious topics. So this movie works on several levels. Jim Carrey was a Truman type man in his early career. By that I mean trapped, like we're all trapped on certain roads. He was trapped in a world were he's expected to play the same character over and over because the studio was guaranteed to make money off of them. How tempting it must have been to accommodate and give into their pressure instead of taking the risks he wanted to take artistically. He made Man on the Moon just one year after Truman Show, so metaphorically speaking he got into the boat and rode through the storm in his own career. I think this is one of the main themes of this movie, the fact that our prisons don't have to be nasty and horror filled places. Cages can be very comfortable and most of us will voluntarily give up a large part of our freedom as long as our cage has golden bars. But the need for freedom still resides within us and we at least flirt with the idea of sacrificing all our superficial comforts to obtain it. The Matrix hints at the same theme when Neo takes the Red Pill.
The other theme of this movie is it's critique on celebrity. Or at least, this new form of celebrity when people become famous for being famous. But Truman Show doesn't criticize the 'actor' or the object of celebrity, instead it harshly judges the audience, or better yet, the _consumer_ of celebrity. At the end of this movie, after witnessing the unfolding drama of one man's harrowing journey to real freedom the consumer's of celebrity pause for one second, one whole second, before they are bored and change the channel looking for another hit of the drug they're addicted too. In other words, they slip back into their comfortable cage with it's golden bars of escapism.
*Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* is another Carrey film with thought provoking themes. Give it a try if you haven't seen it already. I'll also recommend *Dark City* ruclips.net/video/gt9HkO-cGGo/видео.html which came out in the same year as Truman Show and has a similar journey down into Plato's Cave.
The great part of your reactions is that you haven't seen trailers either so you'd get freshest view of the movie. The slow reveal if it being TV didn't work on most of us because it was hinted at in the trailers clearly.

I love Ed Harris as Truman’s God. He was fantastic in this. He even tries to drown him with water. The multiple layers of this film are incredible. This is a movie you have to watch many times to really appreciate it.

I was lucky enough to watch The Truman Show when it was first released in the theaters. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, due to the sheer amount of layers and ethical questions it raises. Not to mention the paranoia; what if your entire life was a lie, and that literally _everyone you know_ is gaslighting you so thoroughly that your sense of reality is affected. It really makes you want to stop and question your own reality; what if you just went off script from your daily life and started looking around, and things weren't as real as they seem? There's also the real-life Truman Show Delusion, in which the person affected actually thinks that this is happening to them. Seriously, look it up.
That's not surprising. Paranoid people tend to think they're being watched anyway. This just makes the delusion seem more plausible.

You reminded me of a line from "The Thirteenth Floor" (the OTHER living-in-a-simulation movie from 1999) where someone says "Drive somewhere you would never go".
I studied this movie in a cinematography topic in English class when I was 14. We basically discussed all the interesting camera angles they used because it's very unique with the shots made to look like hidden cameras: in his mirror, in his pencil sharpener, from above in his house, the neighbour taking his bin out each morning, from below behind his car...
This movie is an interesting demonstration of how we only understand the world in the way it was presented to us.
This movie basically pointed out how humans love to live vicariously through other humans before the days of RUclips and Instagram.
I think that after a movie like the Truman show, there is no better than the Matrix to react to.

fun fact: Will Smith was supposed to be Neo in the Matrix, they offered the role to him originally. The only reason Keanu Reeves played it was because Will Smith turned it down to do Wild Wild West
I love the aspect of how every scene in this movie technically takes place indoors.
Fun Fact: Dennis Hopper was originally cast as Cristof, but he walked away after the first day of filming due to creative differences with the director. Ed Harris stepped in at the last minute to take over the role. Harris ended up getting an Oscar nomination for his performance.
This is one of my favourite films of all time and I was blown away watching it for the first time. I've seen it many times over the years; it still makes me laugh, get angry and even watching this reaction video, I shed a few tears at his escape. It's wonderful.
The movie has only become more relevant.
I've had two really freaky movie watching experiences. One was watching inglorious basterds in a german cinema. Watching a german kino burn as a german audience was being admonished for their crimes against the jews while sitting in a german audience in a german kino was an experience like no other.
Another one was watching you, watching the truman show, aware that you're being watched, like truman is, for entertainment. This shit got meta.
So much lower stakes than your experience, but I saw "Notting Hill" in the theatre in Notting Hill (where I was living at the time) in which they filmed the scene where Hugh Grant's character is watching a movie.
The Truman Show is at the top spot for my all time favorite movies, I love everything about it.

I remember when this came out, one reviewer wrote: "As brilliant as it is, and as original as it is thought to be, no doubt it traces back to some Philip K. Dick novel somewhere...". I love this film, was deeply moved when I saw it at the theatres...and immediately thought "Okay, I've read that story already, when I read Time Out Of Joint, by Philip K. Dick".
In fact, Truman Show is inspired by a Quebecer movie entitled "Louis XIX" (Ed TV and Truman Show had to buy the script). Don't look for the Louis XIX movie : it's bad.
i've long thought the same thing as well regarding a constructed reality around a single person -- Philip K Dick and Time Out of Joint (1959) totally nailed it. apparently there's an even earlier Heinlein short story, "They" (1941), with a similar premise. and it has to be acknowledged, the twist this movie gives us via "reality tv" and "world-wide celebrity stardom" makes this movie even more relevant and harrowing than Phil's book.
The little town wasn't a movie set, it's an actual small beach community called Seaside, Florida, about half way between Destin and Panama City . I've spent several vacations in a condo about a mile away, and I always walked down the beach to have lunch in Seaside (great lobster rolls!). The small grocery store you see in the movie is real and is still in operation.
Or that's what they have you believing.
Peter Weir is a great director! Harrison Ford in Witness is a must see! A incredible story!

It's a perfect two act movie. There is no ending - just like life. Just as Kubrick used to make. We never find out how his life ends. He just takes on a new stage in his life and we are left to imagine what happens next.
he's free to live his life... even us as the audience watched his life unfold but now he's even free from us... we don't know how his story ended and that's the beauty
"Pleasantville" is also a movie you may enjoy....

This was such a good movie. Though it was made before “reality TV” really took off in popularity, I think it’s even more relevant today than when it was released because of the reality TV phenomenon. Always love your reactions!!!

Reality TV was already a thing since the 1970s. This movie was meant to criticise it and how things were escalating in reality TV that seemed they would cross the line this movie crosses.
It wasn't predicting the future, it was reacting to what was happening at the time.

They did something like this irl. It's a show called "The Joe Schmo Show" Season 3 is the only reality show I've ever liked.

If you want to see a movie about ethics, watch "Gattaca", written and directed by Andrew Niccol a year before he wrote "The Truman Show". It has even crazier implications.
Crazier maybe, but we're getting there. Even though it still is kind of illegal and unethical, there are countries that do research and, I'm quite sure, experiments in that direction, too.

Doesn’t surprise me. That’s what a timeless classic does. It envelopes both the present moment and future trends.
I liked the ending a lot actually, we don't get to see him after he walks through the door, it could be symbolic that now nobody is watching him through a screen anymore, not even us
The very last scene with the two security guards is such a massive social commentary to end this movie with. Watching this guy for so many years, Truman leaves, and they say "So, what else is on?" It only matters if it's right in front of you and once it's gone, you move on to something else.
This is a movie that GREATLY benefits from multiple rewatches. For example, when they're looking at the photo album, it's heavily implied that Trueman had a brother, that was taken away.
I still feel this is Carrey's best dramatic role. It's proof he's more than just comedic face pulling.

Imo, it's one of Jim Carrey's finest non-comedic performances.
It gets difficult, because he's been great in a lot of things.
Another movie by the same director - Peter Weir - that's really good is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), it's a historical drama/war film.
Have to admit that would make one HELL of a show finally.
This movie shone a light on my own limitations, afraid to take chances and live the life I want. Nothing stopping me except me, and the fearful patterns forged in my early childhood. The chains that hold us may not always be of our own making, but we do have the key if only we could find enough courage.
I think I read somewhere that the bus actually takes people on/off the set. The bus driver felt bad, but couldn't drive Truman off the set, so he flooded the bus engine.
I love this movie, and Truman's last line makes me tear up every time.
There are some rare movies that you'll end up thinking about for weeks afterwards. The Truman Show is even rarer in that you'll be thinking about this film for years to come! Easily one of my favourite movies ever. It's a masterpiece!
If you want another film that will make you think, I'd recommend Moon, starring Sam Rockwell. It'd kind of been forgotten about nowadays, but it's an incredible film with an incredible story. I've only ever watched the film once, but I still think about it, years later!
Great Movie. You should also watch is main competitor Ed Tv that came out the same year which has similar ideas with Matthew McConaughey . It’s basically a precursor to the Big Brother tv shows.
I worked in a video store that had a small list of movies, which were the only ones we could play. This was the only film we liked on the list, so it stayed on all the time. And it just gets better, and deeper, with every watch. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to see the film again at a Festival with Peter Weir (director) and Ed Harris (Christof), who took questions after. Sadly, Peter Weir debunked an urban legend about an alternative ending that sounded amazing.

A big part this movie highlights is that we all go through life from our own POV, experiences revolve around us so to speak. So it is in some twisted way a plausible scenario. There was a diagnosable condition in medicine that came to light after as well called Truman Syndrome I believe where people felt the way truman did here.

So many amazing little details, like the 'actors' always framing themselfs right, but Truman often slightly off camera or out of focus. Also (9:45) his friend filling the vending machine, and when Truman turns his back, grabs them back out of the vending machine to fill it again so he looks more busy. And the director unknowingly confirming Truman's suspicions "If everyone was in on it, I'd have to be in on it too" meaning Truman knew he was on his own and had to escape without anyone's help. I'm going to have to watch it again!
"The Truman Show" was directed by Peter Weir, an Australian filmmaker known for really interesting, thought-provoking films, like "Dead Poet Society", "Gallipoli", "The Year of Living Dangerously", "The Mosquito Coast", "Witness", and my favorite "The Last Wave".
A good filmmaker is a true visionary; he can craft a film to take you into an entirely different world, a different perspective, a unique mindset. Movies are visions, and some filmmakers are just copying life, but others make films that take you into the soul.

i highly recommend pleasantville and the adjustment bureau...both have a similar overall theme and are really well done.

There was a really show called the Joe Schmo that was one of those contestant elimination shows. But all of the contestants we actors but one guy. In the finally he finds out everyone is actors. It was pretty good.
Oh yeah I remember that. Yeah same thing,same idea. Lim wondering if that show came before or after the Truman show?
I remember a film called "S.F.W." (1994, directed by Jefery Levy), that has a bit of this vibe, but focused more on the aftermath than the actual 'event.' Not famous, but it brought up a lot of interesting commentary on a case of involuntary celebrity status.
