I am fully supportive of unions and their fight for workers rights. I was born and grew up in Broken Hill, and in 1969 my mother was appointed as the Broken Hill Tourism Officer. However, the peak union body, the Barrier Industrial Council, prevented her appointment, on the basis that she was a woman and that there were unemployed men who should be given priority for the job over her. This was the reason that my family left Broken Hill and moved to Canberra. I lament the impact of this on my mother and I miss Broken Hill very much, but I remain a staunch supporter of workers rignts and I am glad that unions do not now discriminate against women and other caterogies of human beings.
Wow! This is an awesome insight. I’ve lived in Broken Hill my whole life and am a proud ‘A grader’ but I am glad it’s not like this anymore. I have always appreciated the 5 weeks annual leave we get 👍🏻 the only part of this I wasn’t aware of was the suicides 😔
Best movie I have seen for a long time Whicker did not understand what he LEARNED. When he put the movie together., He got a lot wrong I worked underground with an English man who came to Broken Hill as the South mine needed a Diesel Fitter. It was great our mums not working and our sisters not having to leave town as there were no jobs for them, We were better off than families today.
Technology changed everything. Its a totally different place now, apart from the old buildings. Love visiting the place, reminds me of Melbourne in the 70s/80s.
Wow I am a bit shell shocked, I was watching this and finding it interesting but I didn't expect to get to my Uncle and Aunts car accident and the death of my new aunt and the car :-(. I was only a little girl when they married but the men coming to the door to tell my grandfather is one of my earliest memories and the crying. My parents left Broken Hill the day they were married in 1962 as married women weren't allowed to continue working in B-H.
The best part of Brokenill is the road out of town. My Grandparents and others found real life after leaving that Commie hole. I was conceived in BH and thank God my parents went to Sydney. Broken Hill should be used to dump Nuclear waste and recycling. Also, our Politicians.

It isn't a 'movie' though..... It's called a documentary 🙂

The unions and the BIC made Broken Hill the best city to live in Australia

Thank you very much first class x
From 'Wake in Fright':
John: Sounds like an easy life.
Crawford: Yeah, not bad. 'Course, we do have a few suicides.
Yes, but it's only the young women who are killing themselves 🤷

Joe Keenan comes across as a bit of a hero to me. A proper socialist.
Sadly ironic that Mr Bridgewater claimed his smoking wasn't dangerous, he died in a house fire.
My father went there as a police officer, replacing one who had been booted out.
