13:37 -- Its about time to make this unique and famous cryptozoological subject being the *main* topic! Honestly the beast/s of gevaudan are among the most compelling cases so far
Scary part is this event might've actually happened too. I like the theory that someone had spotted hyenas and unleashed them on the poor victims. Plausible.
Oh man I remember being 13 reading about this thing in the school library I was really interested in it but I couldn't find anyone else who knew the stories
I was around the same age when I first heard about it on a crypto show called Monster X. I became so obsessed with the story I did a ton of reading about it, drew the creature for an assignment in art class and even wrote a report about it for school. :P
I LOVE the story of The Beast Of Gevaudan. One of my favorites! Everyone should see "Brotherhood of the Wolf" if you get a chance, loosely based on some of the theories.
I remember as a child reading a lot of supernatural stories in books called Mysteries of the Unexplained. Off all the stories I read the one that really stuck with me was this the Beast of Geuvaden. As a kid it truly terrified me...so happy you guys did a video on this...I thought I was one of the few who knew about it. Fascinating to this day
weren't there menageries and traveling circus troupes back then? maybe one of more of these had some of their animals, say spotted hyenas or lions, escape and ravage the french countryside...
I remember being in the middle of a supernatural kick in my teens reading about this and theorizing what it could've been. All the pictures and stories I heard of it made me think of something similar to an amphicyon at the time. Looking back at it now, it was most likely an exotic pet that had broken out from some noble's menagerie or possibly an escapee from a circus.
@@osakarose5612 That's where most theories fall through. I do know that in some instances the attack was interrupted, but that wasn't always the case. The only thing I can think of is that it was a serial killer, that used a creature as his weapon of choice. What if someone had a wolf and crossed it with a large dog breed like a mastiff or a Great Dane? There could 've been a Countess Bathory situation, but this theory involves a lot of moving pieces to work I feel like. It's also possible that the bodies were in such poor shape that it was hard to tell if they had been fed upon. Plus i don't trust that the local village or army detachment had any sort of medical professional preform autopsies. Let alone look at the bodies.
@@osakarose5612 It appears that it did eat at least a few it's victims if the dissection account is true. In the video it was said that it had "human remains in its stomach" when examined.
@@osakarose5612 it didn't leave the bodies uneaten. Big cats go for the throat to suffocate its kill. Some bodies were eaten, others were not because it was disturbed. The bite force probably exceeded what the human body could withstand so the victims were sometimes decapitated.
The first wolf was stuffed and brought to the castle, I think that it degraded over time. The creature that Chastel shot decomposed during the trip to the castle and when it finally arrived it was so disgusting that the king ordered it to be burned/buried. They did do an autopsy on both of them though. The First beast was a huge wolf with some strange characteristics while the second one was said to be a smaller wolf with some strange measurements/features.
Oliver Hill It's possible that it was a hyena; the people of a small French village in the 18th century had probably never heard of/seen a hyena before, and would probably mistake it for some form of wolf. Also, hyenas (namely spotted ones) have been known to go after women and children more often than men (although they will attack a human male). I'll admit, though, that it doesn't explain why it was only brought down by a silver bullet, or how it avoided previously set traps.
They found its bones in a box. It was a hyena, the same.giy that killed it worked for a circus or something and would get animals from Africa. They figure it was a conspiracy to get people to come running to the Catholic Church. He didn't tip his bullet with silver he casted it from a silver medallion of the virgin. They king had the stuffed animal then it went to a museum then at some point it got stored away. Just the bones remained. U can look it up my sir's.
Right! I mean.. it's not like professional hunters are actually familiar with thier equipment or anything like that. Hunters usually can't shoot for shit, and have no idea of things like trajectory, windage, elevation, etc, when discharging weapons. Hunters usually just rely on luck, or, "I'll just pull the trigger, abd hope for the best". Right???
@Lazar MMA Right. I've read at least over a dozen times about people shooting these animals while standing still, and bullets having no effect. I don't believe that many hunters would miss hitting a target that's easily 3 times the size of the animals they're used to hunting. Does it make sense that professional hunters would flat out miss a much larger, massive target???
@Lazar MMAThere's nothing supernatural about it. They're shooting at the animal center mass where it's hide is the thickest. If you've read enough encounters people have had with these things, you'd have heard accounts where time was taken to carefully place thier shots, and the impact of the bullet was heard. The would either ignore it, get up and move away, or get pissed. I'm not claiming anything supernatural. Thier chest is protected by extremely thick, tough hide and the people shooting are hitting the area most protected against bullets. Read more encounters people have had. Maybe some of them missed, but that's not what's happening in all the cases.
It was a wolfdog (or a few of them), trained to kill. No doubt about it. Read the report about the beast Chastel killed (and possibly owned), which was made by the taxidermist/doctor who examined the corpse. It includes measurments and in-depth descriptions, it wasn't a lion or hyena.
The movie Dog Soldiers sounds like it would interest you. Personally its one of my favorite horror movies. It even has Ser Davos and Soap MacTavish in it lol
I wanna give massive props to you guys. The work you put into each episode is outstanding, and the love you have for your craft really shows. I'm glad to see this channel prosper, you guys deserve it, keep up the great work
When I first discovered this channel I was instantly impressed by the array of stories, the art, narration, all of it. I began binge watching episodes at random - first the ones that interested me most, and when I was good and addicted (lol) I began watching the rest that did not initially intrigue me or pique my interest (but that changed upon watching them!) til I finally caught up and watched all episodes... Now, I muat wait a whole week (sometimes a little longer, depending on BTS' schedule and ability to release new content) to get my BTS fix!! It feels like an eternity before I see a new episode is released! I try to fill the void and get by with CreepyPastas and whatnot, but very little comes close to the quality of BTS! Some CreepyPastas are too long (well over an hour, maybe 2), and the slow pace and "Stephen King verbosity" puts me to sleep, and it takes longer to watch when I gotta go back and replay what I missed. Other videos are just weird and nonsensical. Sometimes the narrator and/or voice actors are amateurish and unconvincing, or just plain annoying (usually due to "trying to hard" to sound dramatic or engaging). There's no "storyboard" of images, just a single image, mildly animated which loops for the entire duration. There's no subtitles or captions. Nothing to anchor my focus on to keep from nodding off. I mean, they're still okay for a "spooky story" fix, but they're not BTS. BTS has just the right measure of everything. :-D Keep up the amazing work, guys! Your videos are a huge reason I got back into "wasting time" on RUclips!
I use the term "CreepyPasta" in the broadest most generic sense, to include and encompass all the spooky story channels that are done in the style of CreepyPasta, so my critiques can apply to some, most, or just a few versions (channels) of the CP style.
@Dominik Bradvika So called werewolf stories are basically just the same tall tale reimagined for a different location. Once you've heard one you've heard them all.
France was plagued by wolf attacks for 400 years, I didn't hear this version of the legend of the red-haired giant wolf. The legend I heard ends differently. All of the people stood together and fought off 100 wolves, the red-haired wolf would face off against this guy in a 1vs1 after everyone had surrounded the red-haired wolf. He done it out of a sign of respect, they would fight to the death and he would stab his spear into the wolf as it attacked, due to the weight and force of the attacking wolf it slid down the spear and would proceed to rip the guys throat out. Both beast and man would lay beside each other, embracing one another in this final act as they bled to death.
I have heard this Legend before but your retelling of it is well outlined and the details are given in a clear concise format. The only thing I might have added was exactly how adamant the French government was that the Beast had been slain. It is my understanding that they reacted extremely if someone tried to argue otherwise. Enjoyed this story and look forward to your next video!
Love Dogman Encounters w Vic. This sounds quite similar. Would love to hear about more encounters. The comment about the wolf at Skinwalker ranch could tie in somehow. Great story!
If i was in a financial situation where I could become a member of ANY RUclips channel it would definitely be you guys at Bedtime Stories! You work very hard, and have excellent content! Much respect. 💜
As a biologist I would have to say the adolescent lion theory is by far the best. This video left out some of the physical description details, like its' having a long tail with a tuft at the end, also a dark dorsal stripe. And considering the primitive firearm technology of the time, if anyone actually managed to get a bullet (Edit: MUSKET BALL) into it, it was likely in a non-vital body part. Considering how badly everyone wanted it killed, if you had shot at it, would you say "I missed and just scared it away" or "I hit it but it had no effect!"
i highly doubt it, its the movie Brotherhood of wolf that fetched this theory to mases, yet it dont make sense, lion would not survive multiple years in france, cold winters etc, they prefer hot climate, savanas and stuff. for me its either abnormaly large wolf or if we go to foreign animals, most likely it is hyena or some hybrid with wolf, since all witnesses said it looked like wolf just was way larger than normal size and slightly weird looking. hyena can fit this profile very well
@@NostalgicMem0ries French winters aren't that bad at all, and lions could easily tolerate it. Zoos in much colder locations have lions without indoor access all through the winter. And lions lived in France until the Bronze Era (not cave lions but ones like the modern African lion).
@@audreymuzingo933 First of all, French winters are not the same as African winters, where lions have evolved to thrive. The average temperature in France during winter is around 5°C, while in Africa it is around 20°C. That's a huge difference for an animal that has no fur or fat to protect it from the cold. Secondly, zoos that keep lions in colder climates usually provide them with heated shelters, blankets, and extra food to help them cope with the stress of low temperatures. They also monitor their health and behavior closely to ensure they are not suffering from frostbite, hypothermia, or depression. Thirdly, the lions that lived in France until the Bronze Era were not exactly like the modern African lion. They belonged to a different subspecies, called the European cave lion, which was larger and had a thicker coat than its African cousin. They also went extinct due to human hunting and habitat loss, not because they adapted to the climate. Theoretically they could survive one or two warm winters, but its unlikely as historical records suggest winters were pretty harsh at that time. Hyenas would have way higher chance especially since they are so closely related to wolves and could technically breed
@@NostalgicMem0ries I literally said NOT CAVE LIONS. And heated blankets and what-not? -do you not realize lions have been kept in zoos in Russia, northern Europe, and North America since long before electricity or veterinarians knew anything besides livestock and pets? They lived in concrete floored cages and were fed horse meat, and still are to this day in many places, including the Little Rock Zoo where I worked (horse "knees" shipped from Mexico), and it got plenty cold there, but the only thing that could get the lions to go indoors was at feeding time, otherwise they LOVED it outside in winter -they especially loved it when it snowed. Despite thousands of years of isolation to tropical Africa, their genes still signal coding for a winter coat, just like housecats that get to go outside get longer hair in the winter, but fully indoor ones don't. Matter of fact that's probably another reason the French villagers didn't recognize it as a lion -no mane but long shaggy hair all over the body -that would look more like a strange wolf. Believe it was really a wolf if you want, but again as a biologist (with emphasis in zoology by the way, not microbes or whatever, and I have worked with all kinds of big cats) I am telling you, a lion would do just fine in the French countryside, with plenty of sheep, pigs, goats, and the occasional hare, for meals. And by the way, big cats including lions have a wayyyyyy longer rap sheet for hunting humans than wolves do, at any time or place in recorded history.
Isn’t a tiger a much more fitting animal? Lives in colder areas, hunts alone, and if it was one the Beast of Gevaudan wouldn’t even be the record holder for most human fatalities

Sawney Bean was most likely a tale originating from the English elites to show how barbaric the Scots were. The hint comes from the name Sawney. It was used as a derogatory name and no Scot used it as an abbreviation of Alexander.

Such a story could have been modernized & then knitted into an awesome Rambo tale, which would be sweetly splendid! Rambo vs the Werewolf! Has a poetic ring to it!
Many exotic animals were imported into France by the upper classes at this time. It’s quite possible the beast was an escaped hyena. Watch Animal X, they made an episode covering this.

Metal armour would not stop a musket ball, that is why it stopped being issued to soldiers as the invention of guns proliferated. Once you have guns traditional medieval armour became superfluous. Therefore the theory that the monster may be a man in skin with armour underneath and that is why it was resistant to gun fire does not hold water.
How did I miss this one?! I love playing the WHOLE playlist on random. Nice to find ones I have not caught yet, great for the sleepy time or background ambience. Thanks! Solid content.
I was subbed to you when you had under 20,000 subs man. I thought it was crazy you didn't have more subs when I found you! I knew you would blow up! The artwork and presentation has become very polished and professional. You should consider trying a fully animated episode for an experiment if you can find the people to do the animation work! I think your way to telling the story with actual animation in this art style would be even more captivating and that's saying something.
Did a little reading up on the story and it looks like, from all the descriptions, that a subadult lion fits the bill. It is a truly fascinating story. We are told many times that eyewitness accounts can be faulty and anything happening at night in the dark, or by ambush where the attack happens quickly is sure to be hard to give an accurate description. I love these stories though. Keep them coming.
It could have been a Wolf with agromeglia or giantism. Also, there are tons of examples of wild animals evading hunters on an almost supernatural level. There have been cases such as 4 Finnish soldiers being killed by the Wolves they were sent to hunt and kill. European Wolves have a well deserved reputation for killing people. In North America, not so much. Actually hardly any cases of it. But it has happened. Anyhow, with a wolf with a case of giantism, it would explain it being hit by shots, and seeming to be unharmed. If it has large bones.
There was a history Channel special back in 2009 "The Real Wolfman". Where the team went to the Natural History museum vault and examined the taxidermist remains of the Beast of Gevaudan. And the data came back it was a Hyena.
If there's any truth to the legend at all it's most likely to have been a serial killer, and the entire "beast" story was merely a way of covering up for the fact that a (very human) killer was on the loose. If it was a large wolf, hyena or lion why would it ignore livestock to concentrate on humans? Though I've heard in other versions that it did supposedly attack livestock when no people were present.
Man eating predators do have a habit of just ignoring livestock once they got a taste for human, and of course it may of hunted livestock but due to all the people getting attacked no one attributed a single sheep going missing to a rampaging predator
Another excellent video from BT! 💕 I felt so sad for the wolf family and cubs who were killed - and so many other innocent wild canines. Why were people out walking around in the country when there was a ferocious murdering beastie wandering about.

Ha word is that it was a hyena.

@@jakebarnes3054 maybe it got lucky?
Jake Barnes They were the magical hyenas obviously...😊
The tests done on the remains a few years back indicates a hyena.
Many predators go for the throat of their pray, so this would make sense. As to why they aren’t eaten, I can’t offer any explanation for that.
@@osakarose5612 it didn't leave the bodies uneaten. Big cats go for the throat to suffocate its kill. Some bodies were eaten, others were not because it was disturbed. The bite force probably exceeded what the human body could withstand so the victims were sometimes decapitated.
@@MikeLawtonUK Very likely if that's the case the bodies found were either not fully examined or there were people missing that were never found.
If it was killed, dissected and stuffed. What happened to it?
The first wolf was stuffed and brought to the castle, I think that it degraded over time. The creature that Chastel shot decomposed during the trip to the castle and when it finally arrived it was so disgusting that the king ordered it to be burned/buried. They did do an autopsy on both of them though. The First beast was a huge wolf with some strange characteristics while the second one was said to be a smaller wolf with some strange measurements/features.

I heard on Trey the Explainer’s video on the topic that the creature had a laugh-like call, so a hyena seems likely.
His conclusion was that it was many creatures all mistacenly lumped together.

I learned of the Beast of Gévaudan by watching the French movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf". Pretty good movie ^^
Need to watch it again. Been quite a while
I just watched that movie a few days ago
With the gorgeous Monica Bellucci and Mark Dacascos, the former Chairman of Iron Chef
@JD Gust of Wind Dance
Those were before he discovered the mystery ingredient!
I think the hunters who said their bullets wouldn't go through it's hide were just missing lol
Lol that's what I thought too
They were embarrassed
Firearms of that time were incredibly inaccurate compared to modern firearms with rifled barrels and projectiles that fit in the bores tightly.
Right! I mean.. it's not like professional hunters are actually familiar with thier equipment or anything like that.
Lot of aristocrats had menageries back then and hyenas and lions were prized possessions, it's not too far fetched that some escaped or was released.

Keep up the amazing work, guys!

I never saw that but would like to. I did watch Goosebumos.
I have been waiting for you to do this topic!!! Thank you SO much for your brilliant work!

Metal armour would not stop a musket ball, that is why it stopped being issued to soldiers as the invention of guns proliferated. Once you have guns traditional medieval armour became superfluous.
Oh I absolutely love the movie that is loosely based in this. Brotherhood of the wolf.
Its currently 00:41 in a dim lit room....I'm loving this
There was a history Channel special back in 2009 "The Real Wolfman".

@Alphonso Muzzy Really?
Some citations would be nice, but we both know you aren't going to come up with anything.
Man eating predators do have a habit of just ignoring livestock once they got a taste for human, and of course it may of hunted livestock but due to all the people getting attacked no one attributed a single sheep going missing to a rampaging predator
