Ok so apparently the reason that budgets on anime are so low compared to cartoons is because they heavily underpay their workers. I didn’t know that beforehand so I thought I’d point it out here. Doesn’t really change my opinion on the budget excuse i still think its dumb but I thought I’d clear the air on that whole situation.
I remember that being a hot topic when the whole drama came out. The point of crunchyroll's program was to help out under played animators and we ended up getting this. And to deflect criticism someone from the studio claimed they only had $250,000. Which pissed everyone off more. Regardless I feel like if you watch something like the original Gundam you can see how bad animation isn't the end all.
are you fucking for real rn lmaoo. why didnt you research this (extremely basic, well known fact) before making this video. why are you even talking about animations budgets if you dont know anything.
When the person said trans in their comment they already lost because use that as a defense means nothing if you have a show that is bad we don’t comment on your pronouns or sex we comment on your shows and your storytelling some of our point of view is as a viewer the good once Judge it fairly this cartoon could have competing with rwby and little witch academy and welcome to demon school iruma all three school theme mine, also they show was trying to be multiple things a cartoon for kids or teenagers or adults instead of being one thing
The reason, why so many 80s and even some 90s shows had so many mistakes is because they still used cel animation for the frames. Meaning, if you made a mistake, you had to draw the entire cel from the start. They at least had an excuse for that. In our modern times, you can much easier fix mistakes, since everything is now made completely digital.
Thank you for explaining that. The only 80s show I've ever really been invested in was TMNT, and I could never figure why the turtles always seemed to be switching places and swapping weapons. Now I know.
Digital animation is just an excuse to be lazy. Its why animation since 2010s have been utter trash. Mid 2000s cartoons using flash was only the beginning of decline of animation quality
"Focus on the positives, not the negatives!" Boi I animate for a living and I *guarantee* I wouldn't be in the same place if my art school professors and classmates only pointed out the positives during group critiques. You can't fix a problem by denying it exists.
They call it toxic positivity for a reason. People and their efforts won't be able to improve if they reject any and all criticism. It's like working with metal. If you want it to be useful, you have to melt it down, pound and cut it into shape, getting rid of all the useless junk. Otherwise, all you'll have is a big heavy rock.
@@Predator20357 don't forget that most Yes-Men are delusional, thinking if they keep saying "yes" to the narrative, it'll also help them more than critical thinking.
One of the first things they teach you when learning to animate is to take criticism lightheartedly. It's all to improve your work. Feedback is an insane tool, and getting angry over people pointing out your mistakes only hinders you ability to improve.
"You shouldn't be so negative and instead focus on the positive things" says the dude who left multiple hateful comments and basically wrote entire essays about how bad he thinks you are lmao
For a guy claiming you’re obsessed with this show, he sounds pretty obsessed with you if he keeps coming back to defend a show he’s never even watched.
Yeah like that's the weirdest part to me. If you watch and somehow unironically enjoy it and want to defend it then sure, that makes some level of sense I guess no matter how bad the show is. But defending a bad show you've never even seen makes zero sense. Like why?
@@amandap7733 Lmao prolly but why would they say they've never seen it? Alt or not, it makes no sense to say that because it makes them look more stupid than if they just say they enjoyed the show.
"If you truly care about your story, if you have a tale that needs to be told, if you have true inspiration, if you love your characters, then there's no excuse for your script to be this utterly broken in every way." - LobsterHero about the "writing bad because of budget" argument.
LobsterHero was too intense for me. If anyone is attacking the creators of this show rather than the show itself, it’s him. GaurdianHQ is more chill so I just stay here
"I guess I just expected better, and you're not showing me you're capable of being better" What kinda crazy, gaslighting, manipulative sentence is this?? Sound straight out of toxic parent/partner's mouth.
Just fyi: animation studios in japan are, like most places in japan a major nightmare to work in. Animators are (mostly) in-house and paid by the company itself, most of them are dramatically UNDERpaid. There's even programs targeted to finance animators' stay in dorms so they can use the frankly little money they earn without worrying about housing. The work ethic in japan is a whole lot different, and the "low" budgets mostly come from overworking the animators. If the animation was done in house by Ray and company with an anime budget they'd probably expose crunchyroll for terrible crunching (hehe) culture. As an animator, animating is hard as shit and not valued nearly enough.
@@SunnysFilms Well...how am I supposted to get an animation degree. There aren't many english animation schools, colleges, universities in montreal you know.
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 Well, I had no idea you are in Montreal, since nothing about your original comment suggested as much. That said, I would search online for a correspondence school. I've heard of people taking animation courses online. Since you're in Quebec, I don't know how accessible those are, but I would think it would be worth the research if this is what you really want to do.
I love how every single person I've seen trying to defend this show never mention what makes this show good and instead deflect to stupid points that have nothing to do with the quality of the show. Almost as if they know the awful aspects are so major that you have to go through hoops to praise it
Thank you. Everyone forgets this, but the trailer talked up how amazing the animation was going to be. And, honestly, it could have been if the character designs had been simplified instead of attempting this half-assed anime look.
@@rinyukiohara8178 hey yeah speaking of which what are those things that they are referring to anyway? I don’t remember any particularly innovative or old school animation techniques? Or even from a story perspective.
The ‘ur transphobik’ argument may even damage the people it supposedly “protects” because bad trans writers are never gonna improve if all their legitimate criticism gets shut down right away like this. And it might be their fault that nowadays I can’t name or remember a good piece of media created by a trans person that isn’t The Matrix. Nobody is born a writer, a good writer has gone through trial and error at the expense of their confidence, but the results afterwards speak for themselves.
It actively causes resentment towards trans people to use them as a shield to deflect criticism. It reduces the trust in them. If people think that having trans characters or being a trans writer makes your work immune to criticism and you thus don't have to try at all, then people are going to be mistrustful of future works by trans people featuring trans people, worrying that the identity will be used as a shield to allow the show to be terrible.
Damn, I never thought someone that would die on a hill about something they don’t even watch, like I would presume they would at least skim over the episodes before they start consuming the boot.
"Allies" be like that more often than not, And just as often they tend to have some very nasty skeleton's hidden in their closets that makes them worse than what they accuse others of being to those very same people they claim to protect and others.
Here's what I've observed about Jim Light: *He can't grasp that animation errors are inconsequential compared to writing and good characters, which is the reason people love those old 80s shows. *He can't grasp the difference between personal attacks and professional criticism... while launching a bunch of personal attacks. *He doesn't think negative criticism should be done at all, because "why not be POSITIVE?" Here's why: because negative criticism shows people what to avoid in their own work, and can serve as a source of growth and artistic evolution for the ones being criticized. It's a necessary part of producing art that other people will actually see. *He thinks minorities should be immune to all artistic criticism. *He uses reaching-so-far-he's-dislocated-his-joints accusations of bigotry in an attempt to silence people he doesn't like. *He engages in massive hyperbole to paint Guardian HQ as a bigot and troll. *Despite knowing "nothing" about the show and having watched none of it, he somehow knows the showrunner is a trans-man, and also knows that it doesn't deserve the criticism it's receiving (yes, it does). *He doesn't believe in individual personal responsibility, since he thinks that a random RUclipsr is responsible for what EVERY SINGLE VIEWER of his videos says and does. Never mind that they're people with their own free will and choices - Guardian HQ need to obsessively play Internet police and tell them what to do (which they would ignore anyway, because that's what people do when others tell them what to do). *He doesn't know the difference between artistic criticism and inciting personal harassment. *He can't grasp that him not understanding something isn't necessarily someone else's fault. It's his fault. He doesn't understand it, and that's his problem. *He thinks that mocking a TV show will immediately and inevitably lead to personal harassment by the people watching. I hope he's just as indignant for Robert Zemeckis over the hundreds of "Pinocchio sucks" videos being released right now. *"The mental gymnastics to justify your continued videos is exhausting." Your mental insufficiency is not Guardian HQ's problem, darling. *He can't grasp that a content creator does not need his approval to put out videos on a certain topic, nor does Guardian HQ need to justify it. Only in Jim's mind does it need to be justified. *He can't grasp that just because you keep saying, "You're responsible! You're responsible!" like a parrot that only knows two words, it doesn't actually make Guardian HQ responsible. *He can't grasp that some people ENJOY examining the artistic failure of bad media. It brings them enjoyment, like solving a puzzle. Just because it isn't HIS idea of fun doesn't invalidate it. *His entire idea of "convictions" seems to be playing the Internet's nanny (which is like a game of whack-a-mole and will never end) and being suffocatingly positive about bad media. *Once again, he believes that measured, intelligent criticism of bad media leads immediately and inevitably to harassment. No actual evidence for this, just his beliefs. *He's very passive-aggressive, manipulative and toxic ("I guess I just expected better, and you’re not showing me you’re capable of being better"). *When someone calls him out on his passive-aggressive, manipulative and toxic behavior, he throws a hissy fit and flounces out ("you’re exactly the type of obsessive fun hating trolling armchair critic that I suspected you were from the start. Thank you for proving my point completely").
When talking about budget, I am reminded of Kemono Friends which was *made with 0 budget* and over 500 days. The original 10 creators worked for free for Season 1 and their love for the series got them a cult hit status. Money is no excuse.
I'm just reminded that High Guardian Spice was announced in 2018 & aired October 2021. That's at most 1095 days...nearly double the time Kemono Friends S1 production took, and Kemono Friends S1 was made for free lmao.
I can think of others that had little to no budget, but are excellent. Monty Oum's Haloid and Dead Fantasy, also Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star.
You can still cleanly see and feel Kemono Friend was made with little budget, unmoving wheels and stiff camera and all but in the same time , stuff like all those little movement of the characters, the background, the actually not bad plot, the world building, the real life animal section Tells you that the studio actually care about their works and worked hard for it All done when the production company gave up on this franchise and provided the staff with little budget and support
@@askovtk4834 ikr? It's like the polar opposite of HGS. Money can get you a lot of stuff, but it can't buy people their passion. If they don't love the work, then they won't make a good one.
Jim Light is effectively plugging his ears and going "LALALA CANT HEAR YOU YOU'RE A TRANSPHOBE LALALA". The fact that he would bring up the trans writer and the animation errors multiple times after you already said that those are not a major problem to you proves this.
Yeah it do be like that sometimes. Was called homophobic for disliking a thing with a gay character even though the gay character wasn’t my problem with it.
I could honestly just use my notes app & try making a story that could make more sense than HGS. Remember people, money does *not* buy skill and ability to make a good series.
As a trans person I hate the argument "you hate it only because it was written by a trans" Why, am I supposed to automatically like EVERYTHING written by trans people solely because of the fact it was written by one? That's fkin transphobic dude
No. Saying someone is transphobic for expecting you to like something just because it was made by a trans person isn't transphobic, in the same way that YOU saying you *don't* like it isn't transphobic. You're misappropriating the term in the exact same way they are by saying that, and that is equally unhelpful. Stick to calling a take like that what it real is: plain ol' stupid.
@@reallyrll very hard disagree and ill tell you why: its saying that since person of X group made it (trans, in this case), everyone MUST support it to show approval. Its Transphobic in the sense that it clearly outlines a sense of "needing to support", or in otherwords displays inferiority. If someone belonging to X group plays a major factor, good or bad, that displays biases and hatreds. The fact that the writer is trans should have 0 relevancy to the show, as the detail doesnt change a single thing about it. This person is taking a stance of "since it was made by a trans person, not liking it is to be againsy trans in general" and shows their own view of tbe trans community needing constant protection. Acceotance, equality, and respect is earned when such details dont exist nor affect the base level. Happening ti look inti the show and going "oh, hes trans. Neat" is how it should be treated. Nit "oh, hes trans, therefore I must love/hate this show".
I guarantee the person who wrote those asinine comments was a cis person. Cishets always try to speak for groups they don't belong to, but only end up speaking OVER them instead.
Anytime someone tries to say "Focus on the positives, not the negatives!!1", is just another way of saying, "Don't ask questions, just consume product. And then get excited for next product."
I could understand someone saying that the positives should be acknowledged if people only point out the negatives, but to say we should *ignore* the negatives is not a good argument.
The writer being trans doesn't mean their writing is bad or good automatically. Only experience, practice and the work they actually produce can dictate that, same as everyone else. Obviously Ray didn't put the work more skilled artists did into honing the craft. That's not transphobic. Art is just a demanding mistress.
I think the issue that people have with trans writers is their need to push an ideology… both in the themes of the show and those they hire to create the show. When you’re picking from select groups that share ideologies you are just making it difficult to find talent. When you create a show that only has issues that relate to trans people you are alienating 90% of your possible audience that don’t relate to the message and themes of the anime. You can have LGBT characters and still have a great show, arcane is a great example of this… however they didn’t focus and revolve the plot around that aspect and pushed it to the side as secondary theme that isn’t prominent but still important.
If someone tried to shield me from constructive criticism by using my identity as a "get out of constructive criticism free" card, I'd be personally insulted. Having someone care about my characters enough to devote a whole channel to analyzing it/making an abridged series would absolutely mean the world to me, even if whoever is behind it doesn't even like me or my content. Being told where I went wrong and how to improve is invaluable. Saying that it's bad to give constructive criticism to marginalized creators is infantilizing and feels like a double standard. The people who ironically enjoy something and/or make critical videos about a show help the show thrive. I probably would have assumed HGS was a canceled project if I hadn't seen video essays talking about the episodes on release. The only people who seem to be talking about HGS are the people who like to rag on it.
I particularly dislike the "transphobe" argument. And I think an ideal response to it is that "I wouldn't even know the person _was_ trans if people wouldn't keep bringing it up."
Respect for ACTUALLY showing the guy's username. so many people decide to hide it for some reason, even though it's a public comment that the video maker's showing to their audience.
The reason i'm writing better stories its because i could learn a lot of what Not To Do. And what could be missing to write. Thank You so much for your videos :D
Just to add to the Animation thing. The og gundam was infamous for its poor Animation to the point the gundam's face would drastically change design in-between shots but it was still loved for its characters, designs, and world
A lot of that was genuine production problems blindsiding them, not simply the animation process of the 70s being very easy to have visible errors with. Yoshikazu had a pleurisy mid-production and thus was long-term hospitalized, but he was animation director- a critical role to suddenly lose. He's explained in interviews how painful it was to watch the show from his hospital bed every week because he could see every error and questionable composition he would have avoided under his guidance. Itano also worked himself to collapsing multiple times- as he was kinda wont to do given his extreme attention to details that they frankly didn't have the luxury to indulge in at the time. Sunrise was genuinely a poor company back then and every project under them was done on the extra cheap with skeleton crews- so replacement staff and extra hands were just not going to happen. And losing their sponsors halfway through, only getting a late capital infusion thanks to Bandai is well known. So it's not like the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam was wonky in a lot of places due to a lack of skill or care
@@angellara7040 More about how Raye had way more money to spend. The point on Gundam was everybody was not a stranger to working on the cheap as it was normal for Sunrise and none of these people were amateurs by 1979- that context is not the same as suddenly losing all their sponsorship funding, which is another danger Raye never had to deal with or worry about. In contrast, by Raye's own accounts, he had no such problems like what the Gundam team had, and what difficulties he did have were by his own making- not having to make do with little in the middle of crisis. Despite what the one the video is arguing with is claiming- errors from outsourced animation these days is less from technical or mechanical mistakes and more from bad storyboards and not understanding how important they are. From what we have seen in some screenshots- their boards were trash and treating them like merely rough sketches. Those Korean studios are not paid to correct errors in the storyboards, they animate exactly as they are provided. It's not their job to keep track of or question object and design continuity, or to try to fix wonky perspective. Raye's argument about not having the money for reshoots is actually confessing his end didn't prepare it right the first time. Like all the times Sage's books or buttons disappear from scene to scene in just the first episode alone- they had to be missing from the boards and its not the animation studio's job to keep track of it. Meanwhile look at the boards of One Punch Man and it's like night and day in how meticulously detailed they are.
The good old "you can't dislike this because it was made by x minority!" argument. It's not helping the minority, it's infantilizing them. "Don't worry minority group which I may or may not be (but probably not) a part of! I will deal with these nasty, evil criticisms, because you, in your fragility, can't possibly handle such things, either emotionally or intellectually!" And I'm just sitting here thinking, brother, which one of us is the bigot again?
Doesn't help that the show ITSELF has some of the worst LGBT+ representation known to mankind. Seriously, name ONE thing that has worse representation that isn't Boku No Pico.
"Focus on things you like, not things you hate!" Hating is an art, unless it's something subjective like flavor of ice-cream, hating something takes passion and interest on par to love. The time to dissect each and every aspect of why something is fundamentally bad and learning what not to do is what makes hating so fun, in my opinion. It's not like we're here because this guy said, "High Guardian Spice is bad," then roll credits.
I like the way you phrase it. "Hating is an art." Very nice, and completely accurate. You can't hate something if you don't also like something that reminds you of what you hate. After all, the opposite of love is not hate, but apathy.
Jesus Christ Himself says, in the Book of Revelation, that He rebukes those who He loves. Love entails a desire to nurture and protect, and what can be done when the greatest enemy and detractor of who you love is themselves? Act in a very """unloving""" way, of course. People only will focus only on your positives if they don't care to see you overcome, grow and improve.
This whole "you're not allowed to critique the show for having mistakes" mentality is a load of bullshit. A wise man has once been quoted to saying that: "The cruellest thing you can do to an artist is tell them their work is perfect when it isn't!" - Benjamin Richard Croshaw Criticism is how we improve! We learn from the mistakes we make and what we need to change in order to hone our craft. If you can't take criticism that tells me you're not willing to learn from mistakes and get better.
I think it's far crueler to rip the person apart and tell them they're so bad that they should give up (which I've seen a lot of people say about Raye). Most of these videos aren't criticism, they're just straight up bullying. If your criticism has no positives and you just keep going on and on and on about how terrible a person's work is, what exactly are you hoping to accomplish? The show has been made. It's not going to change. At least if someone gets some encouragement that would help them move forward but most people online only care about tearing things apart because hating something is supposedly more fun than liking something
@@snowpanther7076 there’s a difference between criticism (with the intention that someone can learn from) vs negativity that stems from some sort of malice. I get it would be a downer to hear the same points over and over but you can usually tell the difference. I, personally at least, can stand by the former and will never accept the latter. If there’s at the *very* least one thing anyone can praise, it’s the fact that there was an effort or at least an attempt. A lot of critics i’ve seen have conceded that the show had potential too (and perhaps, this is why some have the views they do). In any case, as an artist, when you put yourself out there you accept that there will be all sorts of views upon your efforts: - if you seek those opinions or critiques…then look for those that would help you reach further heights (letting you have a *general* idea of your strengths and weaknesses) and push on in spite of those who would, as you say, would have you torn down - if you do not? well, push on and express yourself regardless. Whatever people may say, this is the main drive of many an art form. Van Gogh’s art was unappreciated in his time and while they saw only saw value to the public well after his time, I like to believe they always had value the moment he laid brush to canvas tl;dr - not all criticism is bad, if you’re looking for some, avoid the trolls. Art is art, so just do your thang either way, right? :)
@@Killer_KT I never said criticism is bad. I said that these videos aren't criticism because that's not what they are and that's not the purpose they serve. They just use the word criticism to make themselves look morally superior. I've watched other videos and while some did say that there was potential, most said that there was nothing redeemable about it. That's not criticism. I've seen a few people say they liked the show and were attacked because of it. It's a mediocre show. It's really not as bad as people claim it to be. I've seen far, far worse. I guess I'm just getting tired of the constant negativity. I didn't work on that show but even I feel bad for Raye sometimes. And it's easy to say to do your thing when you're not the one on the receiving end of these kind of 'critiques'.
@@snowpanther7076 Well, I haven’t received commentary on the scale that this show has, I’ll give you that but I’ve enough of a significant fair share to speak from experience. What this video and what the show is could be up for debate, I haven’t watched his other videos on this show and mainly paid attention to his back and forth with the person in the comments. Also, while I don’t subscribe to the ‘there’s worse’ argument (at the very least unless it’s not an apples vs oranges type discussion), I get what you mean. Honestly though, the internet’s always going to have those sorts of voices running rampant hence why I figure, do your own thing, eh? I’m not a fan of toxicity in any form, best to try and mitigate or fight it in whatever or however way you can - cherish those who have your back vs those who talk behind it, in the words of a friend.
Oh my gosh I dealt with this person yesterday. I was just sharing one of my favorite animation errors in She-ra and I got that same stupid comment. Didn't even give him the time of day.
Those 80s and 90s shows were: A) making whole seasons at a time B) had mandates for toys (many were based off toys with crude character personalities to work with) C) were made at a time when cartoons were considered "just for kids" and were decent shows (remember, people these days think stuff for kids doesn't have to be good) D) were working under a variety of regulations that influenced what was permissible to be put in the shows (morality lessons, PSAs, types of violence permissible, etc.) He-Man came out when he couldn't use his sword for practically anything besides rocks, vines, and robots and couldn't hit anything on screen (loved the "punch the screen" work around). Skeletor could not be aired in France. They produced ~60 episodes PER SEASON and had to reused rotoscoped actors' drawings constantly with a handful of untrained voice actors covering multiple roles to make the budget work. And the kicker for these bigots, Filmation had a high number of homosexual and female staff working the show. Compare that success to High Guardian Spice with its "representation", lack of censorship, looser art style, and ~13 episodes (I forget how many episodes they had).
The way this person argues is a technique I see a ton in Twitter debates or from pseudo intellectuals. They write massive walls of text in all kinds of messy ways and when you try to respond by breaking it down they’ll then respond mid reply as a way to try and confuse or undermine you, obviously in RUclips where the character limit isn’t an issue it becomes giant walls of basically unreadable garbage that you then have to risk looking dumb trying to respond to their hot mess of a reply.
They would feel much less stronger/untouchable if people didn't assume a person won an argument when the other people stops replying. In reality, a person might not continue to argue with someone like this because they know that his stance is so poorly founded that it cannot be easily debased (the juice isn't worth the squeeze), or they just understand that the person they're arguing against is resorting to gish-galloping and it would just be a waste of time and energy to try to discredit a manipulator.
It's a technique called the Gish Gallop, where they try to overwhelm you with a barrage of bullshit arguments, while refusing to ever concede even a single point, constantly attacking your character to rile you up, and simply changing the subject if you successfully refute them on anything. It's an extremely popular debating strategy among dishonest pseudo-intellectual con artists.
Gotta love how Jim basically says criticizing this show is transphobic, while showing that he only blindly defends a show he didn't watch because of the creator being a trans person. He is doing what he criticizes you for but in reverse.
Dude when you said "it's an explanation, not an excuse" it hit me on a spiritual level because I say that a lot because so many people try to deflect like that. Especially when it came to toxic characters where it's like "well they had a troubled past and that's why they're so awful" like fair enough but that doesn't change the fact they're awful or make their bad acts magically disappear. It's a poor and frankly irresponsible justification that bugs me a lot.
I remember I told my trans friend not to watch this show and I never saw it myself either, I just watch videos of all the criticism about it and the excuse the creator gave was just as someone said "childish" and showed their real age. Like how can u justify a show that Raye APPARENTLY had for YRS since like middle school but ONLY had the concept, everything else he NEVER thought about and the moment he got what he wanted everything failed and he can't take responsibility. It's honestly pathetic AF, UNLIKE Raye I had everything from middle school as well but I developed everything and changed everything over time. I'm constantly thinking and working and changing stuff about it until it fits my ideal storytelling. But I guess since I told my friend not to watch it then I'm transphobic as well huh, just cuz I don't support the work of someone who DIDN'T even write his OWN story.
That’s one thing that confused me about this show. How can you not have anything written for a concept you made YEARS ago? Most people I know tend to have a basic plotline written on the same day they get a story idea!
@@AeridisArt I honestly can't comprehend how not the SINGLE braincell in his brain told him to think of something other than just creating the concept; like your characters aren't even CHARACTERS, how u automatically made everyone hate your MAIN characters unintentionally btw, like the amount of questions that ppl have that are NEVER answered can't be justified by the "budget". I guess all those rejections didn't open his eyes until the show immediately flopped so hard it can't even recover.
@@truegodofdestruction They quite literally fall into every archetype you can apply to them... well narratively at least. You can tell where the inspirations came from, but they didn't really go past that.
So, I have an extremely blatant self insert character. That's just what he was made to be, an all powerful being that's comparable to a god. However, even though that's what he was and still is, I make the characters around him think he's childish, a kind of hobo. One of my inspirations for this direction is One Punch Man, because my philosophy towards my self insert changed into my creative drive and shifted to a metaphor for my own creative writings. A self insert can be childish and overpowered, to a point where it's ridiculous to give them any respect. To a point, the character is also not interesting in design, one of his defining features is a cloak with a universe inside of it, but people mistake it for a print, I also make it a point that he's wearing black Pajamas. He may stand taller than most, he may be more powerful, but most characters I've written barely trust his words because he doesn't really do much that can make others consider him to be anything of note. He's dissapeared faster than expected a few times, but he lost a fight to someone that can be considered below him because of fair play. Why am I mentioning all of this? What's the point? I put more care and thought into a self indulgence character than Raye even put into a project he had for relatively the same amount of time. Of course my Character is something I put time and effort into, in fact I only think that's only natural. He used to be a self insert RP character, one to be better than others, but he was ultimately just boring. I kept him around because I loved the character and even had unwritten stuff I wanted to do with him. In Highschool I started thinking about Infinite, what that means to me. It was also in that time I gave him the infinite, a real background as to why he was powerful, but also leaving out qualities to myself because I myself still don't know why. I know how he got there, but not why he is, or why he fully became this way. Y'know I think having unexplained elements are ok as long as they're not actually important to the ideas presented or canon they're in. My character's powers aren't explained as to how he fully and properly got them, I even barred myself from explaining that because the idea behind him is that this power he has is more a curse than a blessing. One Punch Man. If you can practically do all you want, then what satisfaction do you get from it? With HGS, this mans had more time to develop a philosophy with his creation, he had even made a thesis using it in college by his own report (at least that's what I recall). So here's a question, what did he use of his work? Did he use creative philosophy behind HGS? Did he explain the story of HGS? How did he get HGS there, but also not have properly set story? If the project means a lot to you, you should definitely have something right? I mean, I had time to focus on my character and properly get him set where I can realistically appreciate his existence to me where he's not a flat self indulgence character, but a character that I can see others liking to an extent because he's not flatly the good guy, he's just his own philosophy. With HGS, I just see that they're flatly the good guys, and the philosophy underneath is just how the creators feel about things without wanting critiques to them. To me that writing isn't thought out or constructed in a manner to last, even Romeo and Juliet have glaring issues, but even then it's a long standing love story for a reason. It's not perfection, frankly the whole situation is a bit whack, but we all know the story for a good reason, the story is behind the philosophy that a long standing feud can hurt those you love more than it hurts those you hate. It has a core philosophy that can stand the test of time because it's a testament to human nature and can be interpreted throughout time with nearly the same same philosophy, even in garden gnome movie. My point is, what is this show's identity? What does it want to be? You don't need to get deep into the human mind just for your philosophy just enough to have an identity, and it's hard to pin it down, even though he used it in a college thesis. Sorry about the ramble, have a good day.
@@alexandrews6256 I've heard many mixed things about self insert characters in which Raye made a VERY BAD example of self insert characters but to me, majority of my characters are self inserts or rather they have a trait from me and I made them their own character since I heard to also make them their own person not just a self insert. I honestly couldn't see Raye's goal with HGS like his ideals or philosophy or love for storytelling. All this show portrays is how they wanted to spread propaganda instead of general storytelling as u can tell from how much they focus on unimportant things than actual plot. The writers were too concerned about other things or rather Raye was too focused on his characters being "PERFECT" that he never thought of giving them any personality as well as flaws. They can literally just do anything and get away with it cuz they're the MCs so why would ppl even care about your show OR the characters when he made them so unlikable. Like all I hear is ppl rooting for the villains rather than the MCs of HGS from how much they dislike them.
Remember how mistakes in good shows can be even accepted as meme and possibly be turn cannon? You see, if show is good - graphical mistakes can be funny when spotted. If show is bad, mistakes are just sad - a wood to a fire
Looks like the budget was too low to add audio. Edit: I can hear it now. Though the idea that the audio was not included intentionally because "it wasn't in the budget" would've made the video funny regardless.
This really _does_ prove the guy's point though. Had we only focused on the positives of the video (except we were watching HGS without audio, soooo...), there never would have been a chance for us to all improve by learning about this stupid quirk of how YT works on Andr-BZZT- RUclips HAS A PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL MOBILE APP WITH NO BUGS. A MILLION STARS OUT OF FIVE. NOT ONCE HAS SUSAN EVER USED HER PLATFORM TO ACT LIKE A FASCIST.
@@guardianHQ You wanna know another way to destroy that whole argument about low budget. Just look at RUclips there are billion talented animators on here and they usually do everything by themselves. Also I want to say there are still a ton of great Western animated series out there like invincible castlevania, Primal, rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles and monkie kid
The whole "The Show is bad because of Budget" is such a poor excuse that it can be negated with two words: Smiling Friends. An actually good adults cartoon with likable characters, coherent plot lines and actual things to learn, which, according to its creator of the show, had a total budget lower of "a single Family Guy episode". I dont know how much is that, but i would bet its lower than 40,000.
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 well, paying attention is a good start, that helps. Also developing a certain thing that you should have learned by yourself in High School: Critical Thinking.
@@LordofSadFac no. I'm serious. I really want to know what to do right. I already helped on creating a comic with someone else. It's called Bamoon Circuit.
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 oh, my bad, its actually hard to tell when someones being sarcastic, specially considering the video here. Anyway, im no writter myself, but if i had to guess what someone needs in order to make a good history its: Experience, Creativity and Inspiration. With experience i mean more about personal experience than anything, as now adays people make up things when they talk about something they don't understand(take the concept of Chain of Command in any recent Star Trek show, they have NO respect for their superiors and they are never punished for it). Basing stories on things that you learn, investigate and live by yourself leads to a sense of realism. Creativity is more aligned to the two ideas im basing this up, cause you need to both know stuff and have a motivation in order to come up with ideas for your story, cause you can't experience yourself flight, magic or exploration of space itself, but you can use concepts like actual mythologies, science and story for such things. You most be able to not just make up concepts and ideas, but also make them make sense in its setting, otherwise they may come up as generic or confusing. And Inspiration requires you to care about what you're doing and to try to express it to others. What you write must be something you care about and would like others to experience too, otherwise it may come up as generic if not confusing(take High Guardian Spice as a good example of a uninspired show trying to fill some check boxes more than tell an story).
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 You can use skillshsre courses and grammarly to have better writing for comic books but try to also study comic bubbling, color theory, and other important art details to have a greater understanding for writing. Study comic books that have success and comics that flopped you can write a list of what they did right, wrong, and how they learn from their mistakes or what they continue that's bad. Always ask for help and have a healthy team you can communicate with for making a comic and better writing.
"You cant criticize the show because the creators did their best and you should focus on what they did right" is also a great one. I've been meaning to say this for a while, but my god the excuses for this show being bad is horrendous. I'm a small creator, I get no money for any art or writing I do, yet I can still do better. If it was time constraints, maybe I could understand for stress reasons. But HGS and its insane fans are sitting here like "they didn't have enough money, that"s the perfect excuse and invalidates all criticism!" And I'm just here like..... no. If I was Raye and working in my making my dream a reality, i would be spending hours at home on it. Raye isnt some random worker who has to do this or else no pay check, he's the creator and supposedly has had this in mind for years. I've had stories fleshed out more than HGS in a tenth of the time he has. Should that say something about how much he really cared if his only will to work on it was when he was pay?
the worse part is that it wasn't like this was announced in a year and realized after another year, they showed off a tender trailer (or concept thingy...whatever it was called) and YEARS passed by before we ever got an actual trailer that this was coming out soon. Yet what we're they doing after all that time??? especially with the animation like huh...
and yes I know that animation is a tedious and long going art progress but my God, not even HGS shows that they did what they could with what little budget they had or "time constraints" when again, what were they doing with all those years??? ugh.
It's wild to me, I dislike the show as much as the next one (except for Squid boy), but this is insane. I guess bad shows are as memorable as good ones huh
The reasons why I dislike high guardian consist of how they draw hair, odd facial expressions, stif posing, off putting pacing, the very forced diversity and the inconsistencies within the characters.
For me, like HQ, it's the writing. I watched Steven Universe and enjoyed it and that had some interesting errors artistically(*Cough cough* The hair unintentionally becoming bigger than the heads at points or the characters magically becoming short despite being tall the rest of the show *cough cough*). I can watch a show with bad animation and/or strange art errors if the story captures me enough.
"You should focus your energy on positives not negatives" I tried similar plead to my English teacher after he hand me down my essay. Guess who had to try learning from their mistakes?
The whole "control your audience" argument is such a scapegoat. I've seen people spend countless hours of their day managing, moderating, and condemning bad behaviour in their audience but because one person talked smack about one thing one time it means you're "not taking enough responsibility". It's not actually about curbing bad behaviour it's about attacking your character so they can claim some kind of moral high ground. I'd like to see any one of these numbskulls actually try to corral a group of 1000 or more people, and see just how "easy" it is to manage an audience.
I feel like high guardian spice will end up being like twilight Taken "Seriously" at first, Then cringe Then making a resurgence because it's so bad it's good
I'm not too sure about that. Twilight was so hilariously bad that it kinda works as an ironic watch, but HGS is just kind of dull, nobody really does anything.
@@Stadic78 That's the abridgment version. But does anyone really just want to watch HGS by itself? Meanwhile Twilight in completely watchable bu itself because it's... so... unique.
Thing is High Guardian Spice was never taken seriously. It was called cringe before it even aired, and would probably stay that way as it gets forgotten.
To be honest you are right when you say that critisising it can make people learn actually got me inspiration to make a story about some girls going to a magical school. I haven't wrote it anywhere yet but I have a place where I write all important information, so I myself won't get lost or forget something (like how portals work and such). And I find it quite funny how this person wasn't even bothered to watch the show. It wouldn't make it much better but at least it wouldn't seem SO random. And I myself never got a feeling that this is supposed to be transphobic or a personal attack. I feel really sorry for you for having to meet such a person.
@@foxpro3002 I mean, I don't want to copy that anime, so the only thing I'm trying to take from this is basically "kids going to magical school" but the way they find out, reasons for them to go there and other plot information are going to be different. And since I watched this anime, I know what would seem like copying it, and I will try to avoid those, making things different
@@CrystalicAria that sounds great aria, as a inspiring writer myself I support your story, I was also going to write that type of story but too many projects caused me to leave it behind, hopefully you can bring it out in the world and perhaps do it better than HGS.
Criticism is supposed to be for the creator. The problem is that at this point, nothing can be done about the show. That's why all these video essays feel empty. They claim it's so others can improve but at this point, these videos just make me uncomfortable
As a trans person myself the "If u criticize this person ur transphobic!!" Makes me fume, not only is it stupid, it basically caters to the people who want to spread the narrative all trans people are 'woke snowflakes incapable of taking criticism' Especially aggravating when someone in the trans community uses it to defend THEMSELF from accountability because it just,, to try and put it as nicely as possible,,, is just so violently twitter it hurts. Genuine criticism isn't transphobic, if it was it wouldn't be valid criticism anymore in result as it would just be straight up attack/harassment. My main criticism of the show from a queer standpoint is how it "dumbs down" transitioning super badly when Prof. Caraway explains it in show, along with how the show is handling Snapdragon and other queer characters, it treats the audience like they're 3 whenever it explains queer concepts then turns around and has characters referencing inuendos and swearing as if it wasn't sesame street's sh×ty cousin a minute ago. A criticism of the Fandom I have is that some people in the hate-fanbase are genuinely transphobic, like I've seen pretty nasty comments get made by some people (there was one I remember that was saying some sh¡t like "oh, the magic is experimental? I hope it fails >:)))))))" and other edgy crap) ones that genuinely hated the queer characters because they were queer. "High guardian spice sucking isn't an excuse to be bigoted" and "criticism of HGS isn't transphobic" are two sentiments that can coexist and do.
as a fan and a person who have seen all transformers and GIJOE series and movies i will not lie, there were a lot of mistakes during many episodes threw all season(including change of hight, colors, backstory of certain characters, some episode forgot they have characters allready in their arcs, etc) but one must remember that in those times the companies made these shows to sell toys and mainly that, i thinks they didnt thought i would become soo popular later for the story perspectives and also as kids we jsut wanted 1 thing...and its to see transformers shooting at each other...we never thought soo much in their story (at least from my perspective at that time). HGS as most tv shows today cant have that logic today because im sure that cartoons shows today are seen by teen and adult that are looking for good stories and quality in their art. To be fair in the art part beside the parts in the show that lack good animation, i dont see that is bad....sheras show of netflix have some similarities in their style and that show was amazing.....and if you want better quality and story...well search for recent shows like arcane, cyberunk, castlevania or the good old reliable avatar the last airbender. But yeah, this show like most said, lacks good story, character development and sense even in their own fantasy (THIS COMMENTARY IS FOR OPINION, I DONT INTEND TO OFFEND OTHER CRITICS, JUST SAYING FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, THANKS)
All I can think of now is something my dad told me about the first time he put on _The Real Ghostbusters_ for my siblings and me (paraphrased): "When the intro started, I was horrified that I had ever liked this show. Then the episode got underway, and I remembered that I had loved the writing, not the animation."
seriously, this show, in particular the essays on it (many made by you), helped me improve my writing A LOT, and yet people come to say that "you should focused on the positives", this isn't just bad advice, its detrimental, one of the reasons why there's so much terible art projects (like this show) is that people prefer to praise the qualities instead of criticising the flaws, fair criticsm is much more valuable than a consolation praising
People prefer to give praise? On what planet? From preschool to adulthood I can't tell you any praise I've gotten and they all said it was for my sake so that I don't become arrogant. Left me with a lot of self-esteem issues, I can tell you that. I actually think that praise is more important that ripping things to shreds. Let's not pretend that most of these videos are actual critiques because critiques are supposed to be fair and unbiased. If at the end of your critique, the audience and the person comes to the conclusion that they should give up, then your critique has failed because it did not result in improvement. These videos are not critiques. And I'd rather have more shows to choose from than less so I will never support the kind of gatekeeping I see some people proposing
Just ignore those folks and keep up the good work, people need to understand that there is a massive difference between hate/"hate" and valid criticism. The irony is that criticism is meant to help improve a work, not to be a hater, like so many think, especially since the real haters are actually few and far between Good stuff, HQ 👍👍 I'm loving the high guardian spice content, please keep it coming 😂
I remember reading somewhere that the first season of One Punch had a pretty average animation budget, but it's a case of having the right people for the job, and proper management that allowed the show to look great. If you don't have a lot of money, maybe change the scope of your product. It's HOW you spend the money that's important, after all. Btw, gotta love em' having 11 storyboard artists on a single episode. Like that was going to ever possibly work.
Money doesn't make a project good or bad. Some shows could do amazing things with a shoestring budget, while shows with a huge budget can be the worst crap you ever saw. These consoomers really are just everywhere...
I also never watched the show. One day I simply found your first video essay and found it entertaining and very informative. (Also, I found you voice very relaxing to listen to while washing the dishes XD) I did once wonder why you still were doing content about this show while the rest moved on, but then saw a video of you explaining. So there was that. It's sad to hear you so angry today, so I hope you're doing better now. Your content is very entertaining
"I guess I just expected better, and you're not showing me you're capable of being better." I could drown in the amount of entitlement dripping from this sentence. Like what made you set your expectations so high to begin with and why should OP give a damn about what you expect? Who even are you? I couldn't fathom participating in a comment war over a show I have never watched and "defending" it the way this person does. Jesus...
A good argument against the budget = bad quality is this. And by quality I mean things like writing, animation, ect. Scooby Doo: Where are you, it was made with a very low budget and is dated in a lot of aspects, but honestly it has much more charm and better quality *despite* it's low budget and now-outdated means of animation.
Also see... - Poppee the Performer: I'd recommend Saberspark's review of this show to explain what it is and why it is the way it is. It's like the hyper violent Japanese equivalent of Tom and Jerry. Lots of sound affects, fast paced scenes, expressive movement, distinctive characters, shock value and jokes up jokes upon jokes. - Violinist of Hameln: this series is mostly still images and it has a great following. I haven't watched it myself yet but it looks great. - Pucca: this crazily adorable lore-packed comedy action chibi show started off with clunky flash animation and no voice acting at all for crying out loud! I know it has its flaws but it was so much better than High Gardian Spice.
RSD Game-Maker was a game engine made with no budget. There were entire games made with it, also with no budget or perhaps a little bit of a budget as seen with Dummy Duck 4, which likely only costed $30 to make, yet it still is better in every way, shape & form.
It's pretty clear that the person making these bad faith arguments is someone who's really insecure over a progressive LGBTQ+ showrunner being criticised. But, you got to set aside your biases and look at things for what they are. Look it Lilly Orchard for eaxmple. She's a trans woman cartoon commentator channel, who's infamous for being controversial, confrontational and very forgiving of woke writing. When this show was first announced, she was actively defending it and labelled anyone who trashed the trailer as sexist bigots. So, years later, when the show finally came out, you'd think she'd sing praises about it, but that could not have been further from the truth. She swallowed her pride and admitted that the show was trash, no matter how badly she wanted to stick it to the haters and attack anime fans, she just couldn't do it. She gave it a fair chance and reviewed it for it's own merits. She even ended her review begrudgingly wishing it had been better, because she believed that the backlash was still unwarranted, including all these type of video essays. So, if someone like that, who this show was practically made for, can set aside their biases and admit it's problems, maybe, just maybe, criticising agaisnt HGS isn't entirely about the creator's orientation.
Also with the budget excuse. One Punch Man is also a great example of how writing is nearly NEVER affected. I read the original web series. And he started OPM with NO BUDGET. And he was doing the project AS A HOBBY. But people loved it so much that even a professional Mangaka, who is the one that's currently making the serialized version of the series, became a fan. ONE's drawing make High Guardian Spice's look like a master piece. But his writing is SO WELL DONE it created the series we know and love today.
"we got a low budget! Thats why it sucks!" Godzilla, minus one: "Hold my beer" But, one problem with 15:55 - japanese animators are CRIMINALLY underpaid and overworked. A fulltime japanese animator could easily earn as little as 700$ PER MONTH. THATS how those budgets look like that! About HGS; if only there was a method for figuring out a script and planning shots ahead of time that costs almost nothing for the writer/director to employ.....
It's the writing that makes high guardian spice bad. The bad animation just gives everyone more fuel to roast it. Same can be said for the voice acting and originality.
I salute you. For standing up for your work and what you do, with facts and logic and not resulting to childish behavior. It’s very true that if you want to improve, you need to see the areas that you’re leaking in. Otherwise, you’ll just keep on making the same mistakes over and over again
5:49 I like the argument of "if you don't like it, then you shouldn't say anything about it." No, shut up. That's NOT how the real world works. Not every comment about a piece of fiction or work of art has to be positive. It's okay to be negative about these things. It's okay to criticize things. How else will things improve? Some people seriously need to learn that.
Sorry you have to deal with the whole " you have to like it because" group. As I have said to many friends of mine, if a show, book, movie trailer, whatever it is can't peak my interest and keep it then I don't owe anything to it. This mentality is just laziness at it's core in both not wanting to strive for their best or wanting to improve. They just want praise for anything and everything they do. I wonder if the same people who use this same argument would let it hold up if someone gave them a literal dog turd as a presentation for a meal.🤦🏿♀️
"ThE sHoW hAd a LoW bUdGeT!1!" South park also had low budget at their first seasons, but it turned out to be a great show, maybe because...the writing is competent and clever, besides creating a new and unique animation style, so... btw i like the steak argument. Nice one!
As someone who desperately wants to be able to make their living by writing, criticism is good and I want it. I am fully aware that I can’t create something that is perfect and universally loved, however when I fuck something up I want to know. That’s the only way I can learn, grow, and do better as a writer.
I remember the old days before social media, when we didn’t generally know jackshit about the creators of a show, unless we happened to catch an interview on Entertainment Tonight or read an article in TV Guide. There wasn’t this “follow along every step of the way on Instagram as we create the show and also here are a bunch of details about my personal life!” I’m not saying times were better back then, we just had more of an opportunity to look at the WORK and not bring (whatever personal issues the creator may be dealing with) into it. The way it is now, the creator is almost as important as what they’ve created, there’s really very little separation. So of course there will be fans (or non-fans) jumping to ludicrous conclusions.
you have summed up internet arguments perfectly in this video. one side with actual talking points and the other side completely ignoring the actual argument and just resorting to name calling and deflection. it happens all the time not just with shows like this and She-Ra but also in political arguments on both sides (yes really both sides are often guilty of the same thing). It's enough to make ones blood pressure pop. There is a reason I deleted my twitter recently. I realized I was wasting time I could never get back there.
Sounds like Jim was trying to be a white knight for a 'marginalized creator'. It's kind of weird that he knew enough about HGS to know that Raye is a trans man but didn't also see that the majority of the staff are women? You could've been a misogynist, too! What kind of kills me about that attitude is that, as far as I've seen, you've always focused your critique on the contents of the show itself. You aren't dragging creators out and specifically berating them for their decisions and making it personal, you're discussing the merits (and lack thereof) of the end product. If you were regularly shouting about Raye Rodriguez or calling out writers it would be one thing but it's just "Here's a show, this is why it's not working".
@@guardianHQ You can use stuff like Kemono Friends Season 1 instead, which was a labor of love from 10 people & made with 0 budget over 500 days. That show got them a cult hit status in Japan, got them a Season 2 deal with big licensers, and plenty of merchandising rights. There's also other works like Touhou Fantasy Kaleidoscope that's also a labor of love & freely uploaded undubbed to RUclips (fandubs are by up&coming voice actresses) that gets a lot of attention too. *Lack of money really never an excuse for bad works.*
I'm just reminded that High Guardian Spice was announced in 2018 & aired October 2021. That's at most 1095 days...nearly double the time Kemono Friends S1 production took, and Kemono Friends S1 was made for free lmao.
Fixing errors on traditional animation or cel animation is far more time consuming than animation on modern computers. With modern computers, it can be done in few minutes versus traditional which can take days to weeks to fix. Back then, it's more understandable when you don't have enough time to fix every issue. Today's modern technology, there's no excuse. In the end, it all comes down to talent, not budget.
Thank you for making this videos it let learn too much about writing and encourage me to write my own story also the bridge series is so funny so keep up
I have watched She-Ra, and yes, the show does have some problems with animation here and there. It however makes up for these issues by having strong writing and well defined characters. The villain is present right from the start; we understand his motives. Storylines serve character growth. It's a great example of how to include non-binary or neuro-divergent characters in a show without making it a massive deal.
@@frostryu Yeah, keep in mind Catra was based on Nate's abusive wife. I found the characters unlikable and it gets way too much praise then it needed. Nate also downplayed Filmation's accomplishments, the original She ra va was the only mature one who tried to calm down both new and old fans yet didn't get a part and they didn't even care that the original co founder died until being called out. Then again, since She Ra went with the fan baiting route, was shilled by mainstream media and its fans attacked anyone who criticizes it even if it's not scathing, I have no positive things to say about it. The fact that Jim Light brings it up here implies that he was a fan of Nu ra (or just blindly defends it) or just assumed Guardian HQ is a part of Nu ra's critics for even making HGS videos
I'm cishet and I haven't watched She-ra, but I watched videos criticizing it episode by episode, so I feel that I know enough. And my only big issue was how they romanticized Catra's abuse towards Adora, and ignored the her actions solely because its a lesbian relationship. If Catra was a male, no one would be supporting the relationship, and they would actually hate Catra as a character. Seeing canon LGBT couples in shows is always great to see. But if any relationship straight or gay get borderline abusive/toxic, It makes me super uncomfortable aswell as infuriated whenever the abuser get rewarded or praised. It's also worrying that these are the relationships vulnerable people have to idolize. Resulting in them entering abusive relationships aswell.
Transformers G1 had 98 episodes over four seasons vs. HGS's 12, Also, I'm pretty sure the writers and animators on the Transformers didn't have three years to write scripts, flesh out storyboards, produce key animation cells, and in-between animation cells, HGS did. And remember, this was in 1984. They did ALL OF THIS BY HAND, no Photoshop, no Illustrator, no digital graphics techniques of any kind. Animation errors make sense for Transformers G1 given the time constraints of it's production schedule, and they still have fewer errors per episode than HGS, who half-assed everything from the story, to blatant animation errors, failures to maintain proportions, even outright stealing stock images, and not even doing a good job of hiding their theft of said images at that. If anything, comparing HGS flaws to those of 80's shows like The Transformers only proves that production quality was superior 40 years ago when compared to today, even without the benefit of modern illustration and animation techniques. Yeah, this show has no excuse. It's staff was either lazy or incompetent, probably both when you consider that one writer who would rather post her misandry and fuel flame wars on social media than polish her craft; I highly doubt the rest of the staff were any better in that regard.
I do dislike how these sort of comments try to say: "You're criticizing this because it's made by (insert minority groups here)." because that's implying that these groups are too gentle and infantile to be considered like any other show runner. Patronizing, is it not? Maybe instead of focusing on the LGBT aspects, Jim Light, why don't you, I don't know...LOOK at the source material and seek out other people's positive opinions of the show. Oh wait, that would imply you actually cared to do any research on the subject instead of another youtuber's opinion. Which everyone here knows that you don't. If people want to have a discussion about why this show is in their opinion, "good" or "misunderstood because of budget", etc. Then by all means, make that argument. However, bringing up baseless accusations that the person arguing against a show is because they're "-ist" will immediately make that opinion invalid of any proper critique and will make you look like a twat 14 year old girl on Twitter trying to defend and coddle a group that just wants to have better representation in the popular media. (Sidenote: You often never see these types of comments when it comes to good representation in actual good shows like The Owl House)
So they accuse your videos as "personal attack", while themselves typing multiple essay that, by their own logic, would be multiple personal attacks against you. Why can't they focus on the positive instead of negative in your videos?, LOL. Not to mention that manipulative tone of the last comment. Seriously, they ignore your reasoning, guilt trip you about other people behavior that you can't control, shove words you didn't said down your throat, repeatedly saying you're a bad person, ending with "I guess I just expected better"? Just...Whow.
Hey if you want to be petty again here I think you content is entertaining and one of the good criticisms that don’t yell all the time and I have actually learned some stuff and don’t worry you are not a bigot. Your welcome
I genuinely find your content and criticism of high gradian space the more positive than negative, I've seen criticisms of shows that had a lot of personal attacks and I came out of those videos feeling upset even if it was never about me the toxicity was just radiating from them but when I was watching these videos you have given not only criticism but ways to improve the writing, dialog and logic of the show due to this it has given me ideas on how I should improve my own stories and I feel so much better so I don't know where this whole "stop being negative and be positive" crap is coming from because you're being very positive with your criticisms.
Animation has improved over the last 30-40 years, so if this show's animation is comparable to those old cartoons, then that says more about the modern show than the old one.
Whenever I read or hear a comment about this show having a low budget, I think about Season 1 of Kemono Friends. That show had a near non-exsistant animation budget, but it's still a beloved show because the characters and story writing made up for it.
I think the Jimmy forgot that its offensive to base an opinion off someones gender, and that its basically reducing character and not allowing the person to see the truth and improve their skills.
Now to release the clips of Guardian HQ wringing his hands and cackling madly as he plots out the destruction of High Guardian Spice in his Volcano Lair.
There are several differences between HGS, Transformers and GI Joe: 1. Transformers and GI Joe were weekday shows so the production time was very strict. HGS had a lot of production time and it was a 12-episode series. GI Joe 95 episodes. Transformers 98 episodes. Plus, each had a movie. 2. Unlike HGS, Transformers and GI Joe had professionals: a. Voice actors many of those voicing the characters were veteran voice and character actors such as John Stephenson whose work goes back to radio and transitioned to animation and television. The majority of the voice actors came from the Hanna-Barbera stable. The voice actor can make or break a show. b. The backstory of Transformers, along with the characters, was fleshed out by the Marvel staff such as Denny O'Neal coming up with Optimus Prime; while Larry Hama came up with backstory and bios of GI Joe and Cobra. c. The writers. Many of the writers for GI Joe and Transformers were professionals in comics, animation, television and prose. Ron Freidman was hired on GI Joe because he wrote for television not animation. HGS had 3rd rate fanfiction writers. d. This applies strictly to Raye...

*insert morphing gundam face here*
Thank you for explaining that. The only 80s show I've ever really been invested in was TMNT, and I could never figure why the turtles always seemed to be switching places and swapping weapons. Now I know.

It actively causes resentment towards trans people to use them as a shield to deflect criticism. It reduces the trust in them. Here's what I've observed about Jim Light:
*He can't grasp that animation errors are inconsequential compared to writing and good characters, which is the reason people love those old 80s shows.

Hell yeah, god bless Tomino.
@@gtf234 this whole first section of the video is about budget

Could never have said it better, it may be with good intention, but it's detrimental towards progress
@@snowpanther7076 there’s a difference between criticism (with the intention that someone can learn from) vs negativity that stems from some sort of malice. If there’s at the *very* least one thing anyone can praise, it’s the fact that there was an effort or at least an attempt. A lot of critics i’ve seen have conceded that the show had potential too (and perhaps, this is why some have the views they do).
In any case, as an artist, when you put yourself out there you accept that there will be all sorts of views upon your efforts:
- if you seek those opinions or critiques…then look for those that would help you reach further heights (letting you have a *general* idea of your strengths and weaknesses) and push on in spite of those who would, as you say, would have you torn down
- if you do not? well, push on and express yourself regardless. Whatever people may say, this is the main drive of many an art form. Van Gogh’s art was unappreciated in his time and while they saw only saw value to the public well after his time, I like to believe they always had value the moment he laid brush to canvas

I didn’t make assumptions on what you said of criticism, my response was to what is criticism vs ‘ripping someone apart’.
Those 80s and 90s shows were:
A) making whole seasons at a time
B) had mandates for toys (many were based off toys with crude character personalities to work with)
C) were made at a time when cartoons were considered "just for kids" and were decent shows (remember, people these days think stuff for kids doesn't have to be good)
D) were working under a variety of regulations that influenced what was permissible to be put in the shows (morality lessons, PSAs, types of violence permissible, etc.)
He-Man came out when he couldn't use his sword for practically anything besides rocks, vines, and robots and couldn't hit anything on screen (loved the "punch the screen" work around).
"so bad its good" and using the show as a good example of exactly what NOT to do when writing a story are the only valid arguments for defending hgs

Can I ask. How do you even learn to write good stories, characters and world building?

Yet what we're they doing after all that time??? especially with the animation like huh...
and yes I know that animation is a tedious and long going art progress but my God, not even HGS shows that they did what they could with what little budget they had or "time constraints" when again, what were they doing with all those years??? ugh.
The amount of words you can say about 1 show with like 8 episodes is impressive
It's a lot faster to throw a haymaker than to describe the motions taken to someone and comment on the form of said haymaker for efficiency.
It's funny because I like the design and the art choices. But it doesn't save the show...
Well I guess that means you hate trans people /j
For me, like HQ, it's the writing. I watched Steven Universe and enjoyed it and that had some interesting errors artistically(*Cough cough* The hair unintentionally becoming bigger than the heads at points or the characters magically becoming short despite being tall the rest of the show *cough cough*). I can watch a show with bad animation and/or strange art errors if the story captures me enough.
i mean i kinda like the character design but thats probably because i cant draw
I’m sort 50/50 with my opinions on this show I like sage’s design however everything else just looks like basic store assests
"You should focus your energy on positives not negatives"

The whole "control your audience" argument is such a scapegoat. I've seen people spend countless hours of their day managing, moderating, and condemning bad behaviour in their audience but because one person talked smack about one thing one time it means you're "not taking enough responsibility". It's not actually about curbing bad behaviour it's about attacking your character so they can claim some kind of moral high ground.
I'd like to see any one of these numbskulls actually try to corral a group of 1000 or more people, and see just how "easy" it is to manage an audience.
Honestly the whole "control your audience" thing reminds me of my abusive mom & abusive parents in general.

theres so much media with lower budgets then this mess that embaresses it straight up
I feel like high guardian spice will end up being like twilight
Taken "Seriously" at first,

Then making a resurgence because it's so bad it's good
I'm not too sure about that. Twilight was so hilariously bad that it kinda works as an ironic watch, but HGS is just kind of dull, nobody really does anything.

Criticism is supposed to be for the creator. The problem is that at this point, nothing can be done about the show. That's why all these video essays feel empty. They claim it's so others can improve but at this point, these videos just make me uncomfortable
As a trans person myself the "If u criticize this person ur transphobic!!" Makes me fume, not only is it stupid, it basically caters to the people who want to spread the narrative all trans people are 'woke snowflakes incapable of taking criticism'
Especially aggravating when someone in the trans community uses it to defend THEMSELF from accountability because it just,, to try and put it as nicely as possible,,, is just so violently twitter it hurts.
All I can think of now is something my dad told me about the first time he put on _The Real Ghostbusters_ for my siblings and me (paraphrased):
"When the intro started, I was horrified that I had ever liked this show.
So much? Which one?
@@dylansharp8471 ?
Just ignore those folks and keep up the good work, people need to understand that there is a massive difference between hate/"hate" and valid criticism. The irony is that criticism is meant to help improve a work, not to be a hater, like so many think, especially since the real haters are actually few and far between
Good stuff, HQ 👍👍 I'm loving the high guardian spice content, please keep it coming 😂
I remember reading somewhere that the first season of One Punch had a pretty average animation budget, but it's a case of having the right people for the job, and proper management that allowed the show to look great.
If you don't have a lot of money, maybe change the scope of your product. It's HOW you spend the money that's important, after all.

Screw the budget, man. If you have a brain and the ability to communicate, you can tell a good story.
Man, I wonder what Jim Light is gonna say next knowing they just got their ass handed to them
"we got a low budget! Thats why it sucks!"
Godzilla, minus one: "Hold my beer"
But, one problem with 15:55 - japanese animators are CRIMINALLY underpaid and overworked.

19:55 did you just call us crazy lunatics? Is that a personal attack? Lol I love these videos
I salute you. For standing up for your work and what you do, with facts and logic and not resulting to childish behavior. It’s very true that if you want to improve, you need to see the areas that you’re leaking in. Otherwise, you’ll just keep on making the same mistakes over and over again
5:49 I like the argument of "if you don't like it, then you shouldn't say anything about it."
No, shut up. That's NOT how the real world works. Not every comment about a piece of fiction or work of art has to be positive. It's okay to be negative about these things. It's okay to criticize things. How else will things improve?
Some people seriously need to learn that.
THANK YOU.
Hannah Barbara had a puny budget, barely a budget. Yet they still made characters and shows that reverberate to this day. Budget is no excuse.
"ThE sHoW hAd a LoW bUdGeT!1!"
South park also had low budget at their first seasons, but it turned out to be a great show, maybe because...the writing is competent and clever, besides creating a new and unique animation style, so...
btw i like the steak argument.
There wasn’t this “follow along every step of the way on Instagram as we create the show and also here are a bunch of details about my personal life!”
I’m not saying times were better back then, we just had more of an opportunity to look at the WORK and not bring (whatever personal issues the creator may be dealing with) into it. The way it is now, the creator is almost as important as what they’ve created, there’s really very little separation. So of course there will be fans (or non-fans) jumping to ludicrous conclusions.
What you just said reminds me of Sonichu & Chris Chan.
"The show had no budget"
*Looks at Kemono Friends, a show made on a shoestring budget but still has a cult following*
you have summed up internet arguments perfectly in this video. one side with actual talking points and the other side completely ignoring the actual argument and just resorting to name calling and deflection. it happens all the time not just with shows like this and She-Ra but also in political arguments on both sides (yes really both sides are often guilty of the same thing).
If you were regularly shouting about Raye Rodriguez or calling out writers it would be one thing but it's just "Here's a show, this is why it's not working".
hard agree with you, but i would like to say that Japanese animators are criminally underpaid. which i guess helps your point actually :/
That is true the industry is kinda messed up when it comes to treating their employees
21:16 Olive's staff is completely see through, I know this isn't an animation error video but still wanted to point out out
Thank you for making this videos it let learn too much about writing and encourage me to write my own story also the bridge series is so funny so keep up
I have watched She-Ra, and yes, the show does have some problems with animation here and there. It however makes up for these issues by having strong writing and well defined characters. The villain is present right from the start; we understand his motives. Storylines serve character growth. It's a great example of how to include non-binary or neuro-divergent characters in a show without making it a massive deal.
I would argue with the strong writing, personally found Catra to be abusive, manipulative, and so help me with the overtime reductions.
@@frostryu Catra is a piece of work too be sure..l
@@cartoonking1789 I can't wait for its praises die down for good
I'm cishet and I haven't watched She-ra, but I watched videos criticizing it episode by episode, so I feel that I know enough.
I've had that experience a year or so ago and it still eats at me to this day all because I asked a simple question.
1:50 look at the animation of the way she pets that cat, look at its ear!
Hey if you want to be petty again here
I think you content is entertaining and one of the good criticisms that don’t yell all the time and I have actually learned some stuff and don’t worry you are not a bigot.
5:01 joke's on you! I'm going to make *200* videos about why the trees in high guardian spice are annoying! >:)
What have I unleashed
Worse written character in the show is the trees. All of them. All the trees are one character
Now to release the clips of Guardian HQ wringing his hands and cackling madly as he plots out the destruction of High Guardian Spice in his Volcano Lair.
Muhahahaha it's all going according to plan
There are several differences between HGS, Transformers and GI Joe:
1. Transformers and GI Joe were weekday shows so the production time was very strict. HGS had a lot of production time and it was a 12-episode series. GI Joe 95 episodes. Transformers 98 episodes. Plus, each had a movie.
2. Unlike HGS, Transformers and GI Joe had professionals:
On both GI Joe and Transformers, there was man by the name of Lee Gunther who started off as a film editor for both Warner Bros and DePatie-Freling then became a production manager in the latter before becoming a founder and producer in DFE when it became Marvel/Sunbow. He learned his craft much like Joe Ruby and Ken Spears during their time with Hanna-Barbera.
e. The characters were consistent
Optimus Prime: The wise and noble leader
Starscream: the backstabbing coward
Duke: The John Wayne archetype
3. The stories had no real underlying message besides pure entertainment
So the comment made by Jim Light does not fly with me and I call bullshit!
As an artist, the confusion between hate and criticism always gets to me. I'll take actual constructive advise over compliments void of substance. One helps you grow the other strokes egos (ironically, the confidence in some cases may be a detriment to said growth if one becomes content or complacent because of it)
Oh She-Ra? The show that many people, LGBT people included, claim supports an abusive relationship between Adora and Catra? Oh yeah, that was a sound argument.
I didn't watch your channel because I thought you agreed with me politically. I liked your analysis videos and thought you did a great job making your points without being obnoxious. People who make comments like that don't live in reality. You mentioned that you made this channel for your the abridged series and that you watch High Guardian Spice a lot so I think you of all people have a reason to make analytical videos about a show.
That person is a psycho, your vids are awesome, and we don't have to agree politically for me to enjoy your content.
wait, abusive relationship? do you mind expanding on that? i havent seen the show, but ive genuinely only heard good things about it and as a lesbian i am very intrigued by their relationship (based on the small amount of it ive seen).
@@_holy__ghost Something something, enemies to lovers, something something.
Haven't seen it either, but the only person I've heard have this opinion is a weirdo that thinks everything is abusive.
@@Ratmancer oh so like the same thing as when chronically online twitter people saying an 18 year old dating a 16 year old is pedophilic? i gotcha
@@Ratmancer I did watch the show, and I'm afraid that the first person is actually right. Some enemies to lovers stories are ruined because they display the same abusive situation that Catradora did.
If you're interested, I can explain to you what MANY She-ra fans mean when we say that Catradora is an abusive ship, otherwise no hard feelings and have a nice day 🙋♀️
@@giorgiapetrei5421 Wasn’t Catra’s arc supposed to be about ending the cycle of abuse tho?
