A year back i was in one of the historical sites in Turkiye as a student learning turkish. We were extremely hungry from traveling and there was not a single market or outdoor bazaar, only a cafe where only tea was served. We were whining and one of the guards heard us when we spoke turkish, he really was an old doorkeeper, he suddenly went in a hut and when he came out he offered us his lunch that his wife had packed for him, it was two Simit and vegetable rice, souvenir seller nearby immediately told us to accept his lunch or he would get mad. I almost cried, his looks weren’t giving much of a person from well-off family. He had been left foodless for that day but he felt proud feeding us. I always say to anyone questioning my choice of career as to why I choose to be a Turkologist, you will be never left hungry in Turkiye, no matter how poor people are there, the guest is always fed.
In turkish bakeries there is a system called " askida ekmek" which means bread that is ment to be reserved for the poor. If someone has no money to buy bread, he can ask for the "reserved bread". Its in the mentality of the turks to help who are in need.
It's also a mentality of the turks to yell the nice and beautiful language of every type of profanity word from road rage! i'm not speaking from experience but i know this.

You pay to put this amount of bread on the hanger, and the man puts it on the hanger. He can't replace fresh bread with stale ones in public later anyway.

This is touristic area, if you went to a small town or village, they would be even more hospitable. But I have one recommendation. After they gave you the food, do not give it back, or at least do not insist on returning the food or paying for it if they say no. They could get offended. That means you will have to eat a lot, so be prepared:)
Indeed I am sure the doner guy felt really bad, he should have taken it to give it to anyone who is actually hungry. It is offensive in Turkish culture to reject this kind of favor from heart. He definitevely point air for god and his heart. :)

The economy has continuously grown the last 14 financial quarters. International trade increases each year, natural gas has been free to homes and businesses since gas was discovered, the government provides manure and fertiliser to farmers AND the government is rebuilding 11 cities since the earthquake. Those cities are replacing homes completely furnished, stores, entire villages including the animals and machinery. 11 cities since! That’s equivalent to 11 small European countries. Is that poverty, is that poor economy????
Such nonsense, Türkiye's economy may not be great, but people can afford food like anywhere else in the world, including Europe, e.g. B. In Germany, where I come from, some people have more and others less, but they can afford food. Please do not exaggerate the situation if you have no idea about Turkey or are misinformed by your media.

I expected nothing else from my people than that they would help. I was once on holiday sitting on the street in Alanya wearing ripped jeans. The shop owners thought I was homeless and offered me food and drink. Back in the 80s they didn't understand that jeans were fashionable.😅❤

It's not only about religion, it's also about our overall cultural heritage. Religion is also influencial but not all predominantly Muslim countries are like Turkey when it comes to hospitality.

I dont think that only we Turkish people are like this, yes its in our culture to be open and kind, but its the imaan in the hearts and I am sure every single person of this ummah is like this no matter which country. I live in the netherlands and last year I was working during eid doing a delivery job and one man gave me coffee and cake, non muslim dutch man, he said its your eid, take it. If the hearts are in the right place then imaan will complete these beautiful sides and multiply it. But yes unfortunately western countries are less like the eastern countries when it comes to hospitality.

Before getting into the subject, I would like to explain the end of what happened. Even if you call it a social experiment, when they give you food, they will not take that food back from you and will not charge you because once that food is given to you, this food is already yours :) This is actually what happens. All people should do it like that. Doing this does not make us very special people. However, people who act selfishly by not doing this have lost their humanity. Allah (God) has instilled this love in our hearts along with our religion. Mercy, kindness and helpfulness come from Allah (God).
It's impossible to stay hungry when you ask a Turkish person for food, cause "the one who sleeps full while his neighbor is hungry, isn't one of us." Hadith by our beloved prophet pbuh. Just don't come across a "cehape'li". They're not muslim judged by the hadith I just shared.

there is a tradition called 'eye right' in our culture. If someone sell or cook something u see it, smell it and really want it, seller or maker must catering a piece for you. Even we Turkish people don't trade bad to our enemy out of battlefield, it counts a shame

I once read a detailed explanation for this behaviour of our society and it made sense to me. Turkish origins go deep in the middle Asia and nomadic culture. and people who were living in tribes generally welcome foreigners. because crowd means power in the steppes so this hospitality of the Turks come from that cultural code even they arent aware of it.

Before getting into the subject, I would like to explain the end of what happened. Even if you call it a social experiment, when they give you food, they will not take that food back from you and will not charge you because once that food is given to you, this food is already yours :) This is actually what happens. All people should do it like that. Doing this does not make us very special people. However, people who act selfishly by not doing this have lost their humanity. Allah (God) has instilled this love in our hearts along with our religion. Mercy, kindness and helpfulness come from Allah (God).

I once read a detailed explanation for this behaviour of our society and it made sense to me. Turkish origins go deep in the middle Asia and nomadic culture. and people who were living in tribes generally welcome foreigners. because crowd means power in the steppes so this hospitality of the Turks come from that cultural code even they arent aware of it.
