I hear them whispering. I see them nodding to each other. They know all the moves. They know one another beyond the grave. But yet they cannot move more than a tiny fraction of themselves. Frozen together in their plans, in their gaze, in their stern focus. They will sit for an eternity, just like those lying beneath and around them. Waiting for something but they know not what. Rain shatters the stillness. Wind blows. Day turns over and over again to night, dispelling less than charm. Do spells exist anymore? Does it matter? Do the two imagine that if they make a move something will collapse and make their plans turn to black? Maybe they have played this game out to its conclusion before. Maybe they know how it ends. Or maybe they are petrified in the forest of their contemplation. Perhaps they contemplate an elbow or a shoulder out of place, Just a slight change from their frozen state. And then what? Dissolution? Evolution? No, there is only perpetuation. Not a wheel but a shallow turning. Deep in the forest of thought sits two near twins, monk like but without inner sanctity. They are posed to play a game but then the game holds them locked in repose. Cliche to say they are frozen in time. Instead it can be determined they are simply caught entangled in only the small nods and whispers of movement. They can initiate no more than this. They move only slightly, just enough to adjust themselves. Should we leave them there? Of must we get caught up in what seems to be their own definition of eternity? Do we choose? Can we choose? Maybe time cannot tell. Maybe they simply fear the determiner of their fate. But if true, it reveals their mortality. It can’t be that as they know souls as they return before their eyes. Their caution has seemed to seal their state and yet it is beyond the grave. It’s beyond the natural. It’s something about the game that they cannot further because they do not know how or why to finish. Perpetual non motion is thus their world. Maybe our role is to dispel the spell. We too must ask, what then? But something feels right about doing so. We are animated, we move. We move towards. We will discover. We will abandon our inhibition to the unknown. We say in somber unison as if we are monks, let us move forward together into the new.
