@@ultra_marcus In 1969 Gerald R. Ford was one of 435 US Congressman in the 91st Congress. He was in no position to "know" anything more or less than any other Member. And please remember that the Watergate Hotel burglary didn't occur until the Summer of 1972. Thanks for your comment.
Ford would've beaten Jimmy Carter if not for that slip up in the 2nd debate about Poland and Eastern Europe. His campaign was catching momentum at the end but that misstep cost them valuable time. I'm a big believer if the 1976 election happened 2 weeks later that Ford would've beaten Carter and the whole rest of the 20th century would've been different.
There’s no question pardoning Nixon was the right move. Not for Nixon’s sake but to avoid dragging the country through a prolonged trial which could have torn the country apart. Ford if anything was too honest, but was a thoroughly decent guy.
Most of the nation wanted Nixon convicted. The overwhelming majority. Him pardoning Nixon was a slippery slope It’s also emboldened people like trump to attempt a coup
I disagree. It sent the message that the President is above the law and we're suffering because of it today. You don't heal a wound by ignoring it, you disinfect it. It might have been hard to go through Nixon's trial (though maybe not as hard as we assume) but it was the only right thing to do. Presidents are not above the law.
He knew it. And he still made a hard choice that he knew would be politically unpopular and have far-reaching social consequences. And he bore the brunt of it for the rest of his life. And that's why he was a Hell of a man.

I mean when a president steals classified documents when leaving documents he should be prosecuted. When a president sells his supporters election lies and incites an insurrection on the Capitol he should be prosecuted.
When a president steals classified documents when he leaves office yes he should be prosecuted. When a president tries to steal an election with fake electors and inciting an insurrection on the Capitol yes he should be prosecuted.

At 9:27 President Ford misspoke: He certainly meant to say January 20, 1969...the date of President Nixon's inauguration.
The real question is, what did Nixon do in those first 6 months? what did Ford know?

Yes, i have made that comment on this speech elsewhere. July 20th 1969 was the day of the moon landing.
Yeah I noticed that too. He got the the date of the moon landing confused with the date Nixon took office.
Oh shit, those first 6 month's of Nixon's first term are fair game then!
The day Ford lost reelection at this moment. However, Ford did the right thing because the country needed to move on.
I don't think Ford did the right thing.
He did this because an investigation would have shown the players that supposedly exposed the Watergate scandal were intel agents.
I agree and history proves it. How much can you damage the country?
He didn't do the right thing.

I was actually expecting him, after the speech, to fall backward on the chair and then get up and say, _"Live from New York, It's Saturday Night!"_
LMAO!!!!!!

It was a one law for them, and one law for the rest.
It was the pardon that ultimately cost Mr. Ford the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter.

Hello from Australia ❤
What an amazing speech. He helped heal this country. We don't prosecute our former Presidents, well, democrats do.

You think just bc they are in positions of power they shouldn’t be held to our laws ? What Richard Nixon did with Watergate was terrible
